HISTORY

Since its beginnings in 1916, the National Park Service has worked with concessioners to

provide and manage a variety of services and facilities at Yellowstone National Park.

1884 – Frank Haynes opened a photography studio in Mammoth, the first of many locations

throughout Yellowstone.

1898 – Harry Child formed the Yellowstone Park Transportation Company with his brothers-in-

law, Silas Huntley and Edward Bach. The company took over the Yellowstone National Park

Transportation Company.

1908 – Anna Pryor and her husband, George Pryor, purchased the Specimen House in Mammoth

from Ole Anderson and enlarged it to create the Park Curio and Coffee Shop.

1909 – After Harry Child took over the Yellowstone Park Association, which ran the hotels

within the park, he changed the name to the Yellowstone Park Hotel Company. Child chose his

son, Huntley Child, as vice president, and his son-in-law, William Nichols, as secretary.

1911 – The Yellowstone Park Boat Company was founded by Harry Child, William Nichols and

E.C. Day with the purchase of the T.E. Hofer Boat Company. They obtained dock sites at Lake

Hotel and West Thumb in 1913. The company operated a ferry until 1917, when motorized

buses made the venture unprofitable and they then switched to sightseeing tours.

1912 – George Pryor sold his interest in the Park Curio and Coffee Shop to Anna Pryor’s sister,

Elizabeth Trischman. They renamed the business Pryor and Trischman.

1914 – Henry J. Brothers established the Brothers Bathhouse and Plunge in the Old Faithful

Geyser Basin. He used hot water from Solitary Geyser as a water supply for a swimming pool

and five smaller hot pools.

1915 – Charles Hamilton, with the help of Harry Child, purchased the Klamer Store from Mary

Klamer and started Hamilton Stores.

1916 – Frank Haynes retired from Haynes Studios and his son, Jack Haynes, took over the

business.

1916-1917 – The National Park Service was formed in August of 1916, with Stephen Mather as

its first director. One of the changes that the National Park Service brought to Yellowstone was

the consolidation of many of the concession companies. All transportation services were

consolidated into the Yellowstone Park Transportation Company, hotels were brought under the

Yellowstone Park Hotel Company, and the Yellowstone Park Camping Company was formed

Page 5: COMMERCIAL VISITOR SERVICES RECORDS...Jun 24, 2013  · money. These ventures put the Yellowstone Park Company into financial trouble. 1957 – Charles Hamilton passed away and his

upon the merger of the Wylie Permanent Camping Company and Shaw and Powell Camping

Company.

1919 – The Yellowstone Park Camps Company was created when Howard Hays and Roe Emery,

with the silent backing of White Motor Company, purchased the Yellowstone Camping

Company. Harry Child had also wanted to purchase the company, but had waited for the price to

go down and lost his opportunity.

1924 – The Yellowstone Park Camps Company was purchased by Vernon Goodwin, with the

help of Harry Child. The company was renamed the Vernon Goodwin Company.

1926 – The Yellowstone Park Service Stations was formed by Harry Child, Charles Hamilton

and George Whittaker. The business controlled all of the service stations within the park.

1927 – Haynes Studios expanded its business into auto campgrounds at Old Faithful, Mammoth,

and Fishing Bridge. Henry Brothers built a bathhouse at the Old Faithful auto camp.

1928 – Harry Child purchased the Vernon Goodwin Company and renamed it the Yellowstone

Park Lodge and Camps Company.

1929 – Jack Haynes formed the Yellowstone Park Fuel Company to supply firewood to

campgrounds and cabins.

1930 – Jack Haynes gained the exclusive rights to sell images in Yellowstone. Brothers

Bathhouse and Plunge expanded its operation to the auto camp at Fishing Bridge, with facilities

that included tubs, showers, laundry, and irons.

1931 – After the death of Harry Child, William Nichols took over the Yellowstone Park Boat

Company, Yellowstone Park Hotel Company, Yellowstone Park Lodge and Camps Company,

and Yellowstone Park Transportation Company.

1932 – Pryor and Trischman received permission to buy out George Whittaker’s holdings at

Mammoth and Canyon, this incl_uded Whittaker’s interests in the park service stations.

Whittaker sold his business to Pryor and Trischman for less than what he told Jack Haynes he

would sell it for, even though Haynes had agreed to pay more. Charles Hamilton had also been

interested in Whittaker’s business and was disappointed when the sale went to Pryor and

Trischman.

1933 – Henry Brothers sold Brothers Bathhouse and Plunge to Charles Hamilton, who enlarged

and remodeled the bathhouse at Old Faithful to include two pools, employee dorms, showers,

and a public laundry. The bathhouse remained until 1951, when it was closed due to pressure

from the government.

1936 – The Yellowstone Park Boat Company, Yellowstone Park Transportation Company,

Yellowstone Park Hotel Company, and Yellowstone Park Lodge and Camps Company were

consolidated and formed the Yellowstone Park Company with William Nichols as its president.

Page 6: COMMERCIAL VISITOR SERVICES RECORDS...Jun 24, 2013  · money. These ventures put the Yellowstone Park Company into financial trouble. 1957 – Charles Hamilton passed away and his

YELL 123369 3

1942-1945 – Due to World War II, the National Park Service reduced services in the park. None

of the hotels, lodges, and cafeterias were scheduled to open, but a few operations were open to

provide limited services. General stores and restaurants were also able to operate on a limited

basis.

1946 – Pryor and Trischman became Pryor Stores, Inc.

1953 – Anna Pryor and Elizabeth Trischman sold Pryor Stores to Charles Hamilton for

$333,000, giving Hamilton a monopoly on general stores within the park.

1956 – William Nichols resigned as president of the Yellowstone Park Company and his son,

John Nichols, took over. John Nichols stayed on as president until 1961, when he resigned due

to the increasing financial problems with the company. That same year, the National Park

Service enacted Mission 66, a plan to upgrade and improve visitor facilities within national

parks. The company was responsible for building Grant Village, Canyon Village, and Bridge

Bay Marina. Yellowstone Park Company built Canyon Lodge, but did not construct the other

facilities. The company was also forced to close the Canyon Hotel, which was making them

money. These ventures put the Yellowstone Park Company into financial trouble.

1957 – Charles Hamilton passed away and his daughter and her husband, Eleanor and Trevor

Povah, took over the company.

1959 – The Yellowstone Park Ice Company, owned by R.T. Killion, started to operate ice plants

and vending machines in the park. The company subcontracted with the Yellowstone Park

Company to provide services to Fishing Bridge, Lake, West Thumb, Old Faithful, Mammoth,

and Canyon.

1962 – Jack Haynes passed away and his wife, Isabel Haynes, took over the company.

1964 – National Park Service Director George Hartzog canceled the remaining Mission 66

initiatives.

1965 – In October, Director Hartzog notified the Yellowstone Park Company that the Park

Service was going to terminate its contract with the company. This was largely due to the

company’s inability to upgrade its facilities and buildings within the park.

1966 – As the National Park Service was about to terminate the Yellowstone Park Company’s

contract, the family-owned company was sold to General Host, Inc. for $6.5 million. General

Host retained the Yellowstone Park Company name. As a part of its 30 year lease with the Park

Service, General Host promised to make improvements to park facilities by spending $10 million

on upgrades over 10 years.

1967 – Hamilton Stores bought Haynes Studios from Isabel Haynes.

Page 7: COMMERCIAL VISITOR SERVICES RECORDS...Jun 24, 2013  · money. These ventures put the Yellowstone Park Company into financial trouble. 1957 – Charles Hamilton passed away and his

YELL 123369 4

1979 – Due to a lack of improvement in facilities and a poor service record in the park, General

Host lost its contract with the National Park Service and the Park Service purchased all of its

physical assets for $19 million. The National Park Service awarded TWA Services an interim

contract to run the Yellowstone Park Company’s former concessions and to run part of the

service stations with Hamilton Stores at the park for two years.

1980 – Yellowstone Park Medical Services received a contract to provide medical services,

taking over from Health Systems Research Institute of Salt Lake City. The company provided

_year-round service at Lake and Mammoth, and a seasonal clinic at Old Faithful.

1981 – The National Park Service extended TWA Services’s contract to 10 years, choosing the

concessioner over seven other companies that submitted proposals.

1984 – TWA Services changed its name to TW Services, Inc.

1988 – TW Services changed its name to TW Recreational Services, Inc.

1995 – TW Recreational Services was bought out by Amfac Parks and Resorts.

1998 – Congress passed the Concessions Management Improvement Act. This caused existing

concessioners within the park to lose the ‘preferential right of renewal.’

1999 – Hamilton Stores’s contract with the National Park Service expired, but the company

continued to work under extensions of the contract.

2002 – The National Park Service did not extend Hamilton Stores’s contract and the

concessioner ceased to operate in Yellowstone after over 80 years of business within the park. In

that same year, Amfac changed its name to Xanterra Parks and Resorts. Yellowstone Park

Medical Services’s contract came to an end in December of that year, but the company did not

rebid for the contract. The contract was then awarded to Medcor, which took over medical

services the next year.

2003 – Delaware North took over Hamilton Stores’s contract with the National Park Service and

took over management of Yellowstone’s general stores. The contract was for 15 years and the

provisions of the agreement included the removal of the Tower store and Roosevelt store, along

with the construction of a store at Roosevelt Junction and seasonal employee housing.
