Page 16: Commerce 2BA3: Communication and Individual Decision Making Week 5 & 6 Dr. T. McAteer DeGroote School of Business McMaster University.

Perfect vs. Bounded Rationality

informed, perfectly logical, and oriented towards economic gain

• Bounded rationality– A decision strategy that relies on limited

information and that reflects time constraints and political considerations

Page 17: Commerce 2BA3: Communication and Individual Decision Making Week 5 & 6 Dr. T. McAteer DeGroote School of Business McMaster University.

Framing & Biases

• Framing – Aspects of the presentation of information

about a problem that are assumed by decision makers

• Cognitive Biases– Tendencies to acquire and process

information in an error-prone way

Page 18: Commerce 2BA3: Communication and Individual Decision Making Week 5 & 6 Dr. T. McAteer DeGroote School of Business McMaster University.

Bounded rationality can lead to….

• Problems with problem identification– Perceptual defence (defend against

unpleasant perceptions)– Problems defined in terms of the solution– Problems defined in terms of symptoms

Page 19: Commerce 2BA3: Communication and Individual Decision Making Week 5 & 6 Dr. T. McAteer DeGroote School of Business McMaster University.

Problems with information search….

• Too little information– Confirmation bias

• Too much information– Information overload

Page 20: Commerce 2BA3: Communication and Individual Decision Making Week 5 & 6 Dr. T. McAteer DeGroote School of Business McMaster University.

Problems with evaluation of alternatives…..

• Anchoring– The inadequate adjustment of subsequent

estimates from an initial estimate that serves as an anchor

• Satisficing– Establishing an adequate level of acceptability

for a solution to a problem and then screening solutions until one that exceeds this level is found

Page 21: Commerce 2BA3: Communication and Individual Decision Making Week 5 & 6 Dr. T. McAteer DeGroote School of Business McMaster University.

Problems with solution evaluation….

• Escalation of Commitment– The tendency to invest additional resources in

an apparently failing course of action
