✟ GENESIS - BABEL ✟ July 5, 2020

For the benefit of our online worshipers, our worship service will proceed much the same as it does each week from beginning to end concluding with the benediction, announcements, and closing hymn. Online viewers and others who may feel more comfortable with the approach will be welcomed to participate in curbside communion service from 10:30AM-12:00PM. Once our online stream concludes, we will proceed with an abbreviated order of Holy Communion in person.

+ WE GATHER TO WORSHIP +

OPENING SONG 589 Speak, O Lord, Your Servant Listens 1 Speak, O Lord, Your servant listens,

Let Your Word to me come near; Newborn life and spirit give me, Let each promise still my fear. Death’s dread pow’r, its inward strife, Wars against Your Word of life; Fill me, Lord, with love’s strong fervor That I cling to You forever!

2 Oh, what blessing to be near You And to listen to Your voice; Let me ever love and hear You, Let Your Word be now my choice! Many hardened sinners, Lord, Flee in terror at Your Word; But to all who feel sin’s burden You give words of peace and pardon.

3 Lord, Your words are waters living When my thirsting spirit pleads. Lord, Your words are bread life-giving; On Your words my spirit feeds. Lord, Your words will be my light Through death’s cold and dreary night; Yes, they are my sword prevailing And my cup of joy unfailing!

4 As I pray, dear Jesus, hear me; Let Your words in me take root. May Your Spirit e’er be near me That I bear abundant fruit. May I daily sing Your praise,

ANNOUNCING GOD'S PRESENCE P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy

Spirit.

C Amen.

EXHORTATION Psalm 124:8; Psalm 130:3–4; Luke 18:13 P Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C who made heaven and earth.

P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

CONFESSION OF SINS C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins,

and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

ABSOLUTION [John 20:19–23] P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and

for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all

your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY P Almighty God, You have given us this good land as our heritage.

Grant that we remember Your generosity and constantly do Your will. Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education, and an honorable way of life. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil course of action. Grant that we, who came from many nations with many different languages, may become a united people. Support us in defending our liberties, and give those to whom we have entrusted the authority of government the spirit of wisdom, that there may be justice and peace in our land. When times are prosperous, may our hearts be thankful, and in troubled times do not let our trust in You fail; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C Amen.

+ WE LISTEN TO GOD'S WORD +

OLD TESTAMENT READING GENESIS 11:1–9 The languages of the???

1Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” 5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING MATTHEW 11:25–30 Jesus gives rest for our souls.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the eleventh chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

25At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

SONG OF THE DAY 832 (v1,3,5) Jesus Shall Reign 1 Jesus shall reign where’er the sun

Does its successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

3 People and realms of ev’ry tongue Dwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on His name.

5 Let ev’ry creature rise and bring Honors peculiar to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud amen.

SERMON GENESIS: Babel Genesis 11:1-9 A space to take notes is provided on the inside cover.

+ WE RESPOND TO GOD'S WORD +

CONFESSING OUR FAITH

NICENE CREED C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and

earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERING In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35)

The giving of gifts in worship is a long-standing practice of God's people to give thanks to God for His many and daily blessings and to provide for the expansion of His mission on earth. • In the sanctuary, plates have been placed at the entrance and exit

to gather our offering without contact. • Children's offering can be placed in the baskets on the lower

stand. • Send a text to 651-401-7200 by simply typing “give” followed by a

dollar amount. eg: “give $50” • hopeofhastings.com/donate • Mail a check to the church.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Answer me, O Lord, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. (Psalm 69:16)

After each portion of the prayers the pastor will say, "Lord in Your mercy," and the people will respond, "Hear our prayer."

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took

bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to

the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all

of you; this cup is the New Testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

COMMUNION IS RECEIVED Communion service will take place in constant motion while maintaining distance and with no physical contact. Every effort is being made to distribute the elements in a safe and reverent manner. Ushers will indicate when your seating pod may approach the table. You may approach the table from the center aisle and return to your seats by way of the side aisle and around the back aisle if seated on the opposite side of the sanctuary. (As the first pod moves on from receiving the bread the next pod may stand and approach the table.) Your portion of the elements will be placed in disposable containers on the table as you approach so that you may pick them up for yourself. Please pick up the container and refrain from touching the table. Words will be spoken by Pastor and in turn by the Elder as you receive the elements. First you will receive the bread at the left end of the table and then the wine at the other end. On your return to your seat, please dispose of the empty containers in the receptacle at the head of the aisle. We offer both wine and non-alcoholic grape juice at communion. If you require the non-alcoholic juice please indicate so by holding up three fingers as you approach the table. We will not offer the common cup for the time being. Children may still come forward for a blessing at a distance. The final dismissal will take place when everyone has returned to their seats. Although we will not be singing communion hymns, there will be accompanying music throughout the time that we receive communion. Please use this time for personal prayer, self-examination, confession, and repentance.
