July 2013Dear Temple Shalom Family:

The Days of Awe approach. It is a season of deep introspection, and, in a spiritual sense, a rip in the very fabric of time. For with these HolyDays, our prayers for the future and our assessment of our past come crashing together. We look simultaneously forward and back. We areengaged in acts of both hope and remembrance.

It is at this moment of openness to yesterday and tomorrow that our most solemn acts of love and recollection of those who came before usoccur. One way in which we seek to honor the memory of relatives and friends at Temple Shalom is through our Book of Eternal Life, distributed just before the Afternoon Service on Yom Kippur. On the other side of this letter is a form for entries into our Temple Shalom YizkorMemorial Booklet. As indicated above, we will distribute this booklet on Yom Kippur, Saturday, September 14, at the beginning of the YomKippur Afternoon Service, at 4 PM. Please legibly print all names that you wish to appear in our Book of Eternal Life, and list them in the orderin which you wish them to appear in the book, even though you may have listed these names in previous years. Replies must be received byAugust 1, 2013.

Two other reminders. First, in practice Yizkor is best known and as a service is attended by the largest number of people on Yom Kippur. Butthe Yizkor Memorial prayers are actually recited not just on Yom Kippur, but on three other occasions throughout the year. Yizkor MemorialServices are also held on other Festival holidays: Simchat Torah/Shemini Atzeret, on Thursday morning, September 26, 2013 (a joint serviceheld at Temple Emanuel), on the last day of Passover, Monday morning, April 21, 2014, (which I believe will be held at Temple Shalom), andon Shavuot, Wednesday morning, June 4, 2014 (at Temple Sinai). These Festival morning services are powerful additional opportunities forcommunal and personal remembrance; they all begin at 10:00 AM.

Finally: the remembrance of our collective history, and the horrors of the Holocaust. For many years it has been the custom of ourcongregation to gather together on Yom HaShoah v’HaGevurah, Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day, to light a special memorialcandelabra, and to recite the names of Temple Shalom members’ relatives and loved ones who perished in the Holocaust. This year ourobservance of Yom HaShoah will take place on Sunday night, April 27, 2014 at 6:00 PM. If there are names that we do not have of yourfamily members who were lost in the Shoah, please give this information to Lauren Harrison, at 301-587-2273, or send her an email with thesubject line “Yom HaShoah Family Names” at [email protected]. Remember to include in the message your name and what relationshipyour loved ones had with you.

For our loved ones and for us, for their sake and for ours, for yesterday and tomorrow – yihi zichronom livracha. May their memories be for ablessing.

L’shalom (In peace),

Michael L. FeshbachRabbi

Memorial Plaques

By purchasing a Temple Shalom memorial plaque, you

honor in perpetuity the name and the memory of a loved

one who has passed away. Plaques are hung in our

Sanctuary and then set in a special area on the anniver-

sary week of the named person’s death. Through this

simple token, friends and family may reflect on the lives

of those they have lost.

Tree of Life Leaves

Leaves for the beautiful Tree of Life in the Temple lobby

recognize events and honor special people in our mem-

bers’ lives. Whether you are celebrating a wedding or a

bar or bat mitzvah or simply want to thank someone spe-

cial, leaves provide a permanent way to do so.
