Dr. W. Kent Fuchs

Dr. Kent Fuchs became the 12th President of the University of Florida in January 2015. Building on many years of excellence and focused on leadership, the university has since reached its goal of joining the nation’s top-ten public research universities.

Dr. Fuchs has set UF on a path to joining the top-five public research universities and becoming the nation’s number one university for comprehensive excellence. UF is working toward those goals through 600 new faculty positions, the addition of advanced and beautiful university facilities, a nearly complete $3 billion fundraising campaign and a university wide artificial intelligence initiative.

Previous to the UF presidency, Dr. Fuchs was provost of Cornell University. He has served in academic leadership positions and as a faculty member of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell, Purdue and the University of Illinois.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery and has received numerous awards for teaching and research.

President Fuchs earned his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois, and a Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Duke University.

Dr. Fuchs is married to Linda Moskeland Fuchs, an art historian. The Fuchses have three sons, a daughter and three grandchildren.

Born on an Oklahoma farm in 1954, President Fuchs spent much of his youth in Alaska before moving to Miami, where he graduated from Miami Killian Senior High School.

n behalf of the University of Florida, our faculty and our entire university community, I would like to extend my deepest congratulations to you, the Doctoral Graduates of the historic year of 2021.

Today’s ceremony celebrates your remarkable accomplishment in earning a doctoral degree from one of the world’s leading research institutions. I applaud you for your years dedicated to in-depth scholarship, thoughtful analysis and meticulous presentation of your findings — and for bringing these efforts to completion while overcoming the hardships of a historic pandemic. I join you in thanking your faculty advisors, mentors and the family and friends who have supported you in your journey to reach this day.

Today is a day for celebration, and also for reflection on your future. Whether you choose to pursue a career in academe, the private sector, government or the nonprofit world, I am confident that the research, analysis skills and resilience you honed as a doctoral student will serve you well. The complexity and global nature of today’s professional opportunities demand nothing less.

The university has benefitted from your research work, teaching, insights and discoveries, and we are grateful to you for your time here. You are a unique class, and though we know your experience has been different, we hope that you will look back on it with fondness and appreciation, and that you will remain connected to UF as active members of our distinguished alumni.

ongratulations on the culmination of your law school career. Reaching this milestone during this unique year is an incredible achievement and a testament to your dedication, intellect, and passion for law.

During your time at UF Law, each of you enriched our campus beyond measure. In addition to your achievements that are too many to name, I deeply thank you for your commitment to ensuring that UF Law is a diverse and welcoming community. Diversity – of background, thought, and aspiration – is one of UF Law’s greatest strengths. Each of you, in your own way, has contributed to the cultural fabric of UF Law. This culture is one that we will continue to treasure and build upon for years to come.

Today, you become part of the most powerful law alumni network in the world – the Gator Law Nation. You will continue to build relationships with your classmates, and you will encounter other Gator lawyers in every state and around the globe.

When you walk across the stage today, you become role models for generations of students yet to grace our halls. I am excited to see how you move the world forward.

Laura Ann Rosenbury

Laura A. Rosenbury is the Dean and Levin, Mabie & Levin Professor of Law at University of Florida Levin College of Law.

Under her leadership, UF Law has extended its reach around the globe; increased incoming applications by 110%; enrolled five of the most accomplished and diverse classes in UF Law’s 111-year history; hired 24 new faculty members; and completed four of the largest fundraising years in the past decade, including raising $4.5 million for student scholarships in four months – the largest and fastest match challenge in UF history – and securing a record-breaking $20 million gift to endow a health law program. Since 2016, UF Law has jumped 27 spots in the U.S. News rankings and now ranks among the top 25 law schools in the nation.

Before joining the UF Law community, Dean Rosenbury was a professor of law and vice dean at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. She also has served as a visiting professor at

Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School and University of Chicago Law School. Dean Rosenbury’s scholarship has been published in the Yale Law Journal, Michigan Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Cornell Law Review, and in many other journals and books. Dean Rosenbury was elected to the American Law Institute in 2010 and was named a fellow of the American Bar Foundation in 2014.

Before entering academia in 2002, Dean Rosenbury worked as a litigation associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City and clerked for Judge Carol Bagley Amon of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and Judge Dennis Jacobs of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Dean Rosenbury received her A.B. summa cum laude in women’s studies from Harvard- Radcliffe College and her J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School, where she served as a primary editor of the Harvard Law Review.

The LL.M. in International Taxation degree is awarded to students who complete Levin College of Law requirements (including a substantial re- search paper and a minimum of 13 credits in international taxation courses) and have earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, or in the case of interna- tional students, a law degree from a university outside the United States. This degree is awarded to students who have earned at least a baccalaureate degree, who have completed a three-year course study at the Levin College of Law, and who are recommended by its faculty. The degree is awarded with Honors to those with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.3 (on a four point scale), with High Honors to those with a GPA of at least 3.7 and with Highest Honors to those with a GPA of at least a 3.9.

Dean's Leadership Awards

The Pro Bono Project at the University of Florida Levin College of Law seeks to help students develop an awareness of their future ethical and professional responsibilities as lawyers. Students are recognized for providing an exceptional number of hours to provide law-related services to organizations with limited resources, including legal aid organizations, non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies.

The Community Service Project at the University of Florida Levin College of Law seeks to help students develop an awareness of the multiple ways they may provide service to their communities. This recognition honors students who complete, without academic credit or compensation, non-legal work that advances the public good.

Dean's Leadership Awards recognize outstanding service to the University of Florida Levin College of Law community. Among other things, awardees have launched important new initiatives, lead multiple student organizations, provided outstanding mentorship to other students, and improved connections between the college and other communities at the university and beyond.
