University of Florida President

Dr. W. Kent Fuchs

Dr. Kent Fuchs became the 12th President of the University of Florida in January 2015. Under President Fuchs’ leadership, the university has developed shared goals for the decade ahead. UF’s overarching aspiration is to be a premier comprehensive university that the state, nation and world look to for leadership.

Previous to the UF presidency, Dr. Fuchs spent six years as provost of Cornell University. He was appointed provost after serving as Cornell’s Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering from 2002 to 2008. He joined Cornell from Purdue University, where he headed the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 1996 to 2002. He was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois from 1985 to 1996.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association of the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Association for Computing Machinery, and has received numerous awards for teaching and research. President Fuchs earned his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois, and a master of divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago. He credits divinity school with teaching him communication and community-building skills, and to balance his innately analytic perspective with a deep appreciation for people and for human relationships. He also holds a bachelor of science in engineering from Duke University.

Dr. Fuchs is married to Linda Moskeland Fuchs, an art historian whose scholarship centers on the sculpture of sarcophagi created in the rst centuries of Christian art-making. Mrs. Fuchs has two master’s degrees in art history, from the University of Chicago and Cornell, and a third in Biblical studies, from

Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. The Fuchses have three sons and a daughter, Micah, Eric, Isaac and Christine, as well a daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and two grandsons.Born on an Oklahoma farm in 1954, President Fuchs spent much of his youth in Alaska before moving to Miami, where he graduated from Miami Killian Senior High School. His two younger brothers and stepmother live in South Florida.

Distinguished Alumni Award

George and Lisa Etheridge

George and Lisa Etheridge’s entrepreneurial success is rooted in the knowledge and skills they developed during their impactful years at the Warrington College of Business.

In return, the couple’s generosity has given Warrington’s students and scholars the same opportunity to succeed.

Mr. Etheridge (BSBA ’79), with the assistance of Ms. Etheridge (BSBA ’80), founded Precision Orthopedics, Inc., a Tampa-based company specializing in the distribution of high-technology orthopedic supplies and equipment. With Mr. Etheridge’s ethical, service-oriented, and patient-centered focus, the company is nationally recognized for excellence in the industry.

The couple established an endowment that generates two full scholarships for students committed to outstanding academic achievement and service. To support the college’s faculty, the Etheridges, along with family and former students, established the Jack Faricy Professorship. Dr. Faricy was a distinguished professor of marketing who was influential to George and Lisa, both of whom were marketing majors. The Etheridges have since created two more professorships to provide Warrington faculty the funding and resources to generate innovative research and exceptional instruction. They also were major contributors to the construction of Heavener and Hough halls.

The Etheridges' philanthropic efforts reach far beyond the college. They have supported Operation Walk, a medical mission outreach organization that serves the disadvantaged in third-world countries. Mr. Etheridge has had the opportunity to participate in several mission trips. They also have made significant contributions to civic and educational organizations in Florida, including the University of Miami, Florida State University (where Ms. Etheridge received her law degree), the Pinellas Education Foundation, the Hillsborough Education Foundation, and the Department of Veterans Affairs Nonprofit Research and Education Corporations, among others.

Ms. Etheridge served on the Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation Board of Directors for six years. She chaired the Community Impact Committee and Women in Philanthropy, and served on various committees. The Etheridges continue to support and are recognized as benefactors of the Foundation.

Beyond serving in her community, Ms. Etheridge is honored to be Congressman Gus Bilirakis’ campaign chair. She also is a sentinel for Heritage Action for America. The Etheridges support The Heritage Foundation and Heritage Action.

Mr. Etheridge, a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and a Bull Gator, and Ms. Etheridge, a member of Delta Gamma sorority, have served on UF’s President’s Council (Gold Level) and the College’s Campaign Council (2007-08). The couple’s children, George (BA ’10, BSBA ’10) and Carla (BSPR’13, MSM’14) are proud UF and Warrington alumni.

Ms. Etheridge’s father, Dr. Richard Onkey, attended the University of Florida and started a legacy of proud Gators with Lisa and her sister. In addition to George and Lisa’s children, five nephews and one niece have graduated from or are currently attending the University of Florida. All of them wear the orange and blue with pride, including their son, George, who graduated from Florida State University College of Law in 2014. The Etheridges are most proud of instilling the tradition of philanthropy in the next generation.

Distinguished Alumnus Award

Richard Z. Kane

Veterinarians treat a variety of animals – from canaries to Clydesdales! Veterinarians work in clinics, hospitals and animal emergency rooms. They make house-calls and farm-calls. They chase pigs, wrangle horses, and cuddle puppies and kittens. They help protect the food supply in our country and are critical to early disease detection. They deliver foals at 3 a.m. and fix the injured wing of a bald eagle. They care for your "other" family members. It is a 24/7, 365 days-a-year lifestyle – and according to Dr. Rich Kane – he wouldn't have it any other way.

Richard Kane, D.V.M., is the founder and chief of staff of Care Animal Hospital and co-founder of Surgi-Care Center for Horses in Brandon, Florida. His community involvement includes serving as a board member of the Humane Foundation for Animals, as a past president of the Hillsborough County Veterinary Medical Society and chairman of that group’s Animal Advisory Committee and director of the Wildlife Rescue Ministries to rehab and release wildlife. He served as veterinarian for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit and on-call vet for the Hillsborough County Sheriff Agricultural Unit and Mounted Posse. He is active with the Brandon Chamber of Commerce and business community. Dr. Kane has been recognized with awards from several of these organizations over the years.

Dr. Kane graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine with honors in 1984. He has served on the college admissions committee and the college alumni council, and is a lifetime member of the Deans’ Circle of Excellence. Dr. Kane earned the Alumni Achievement Award in 2004. He is actively involved with the college, both personally and financially. Dr. Kane has always been a ‘go to’ person when the college needs advice or wants an alumni opinion. He has been a Bull Gator for many years.

One of Dr. Kane’s greatest achievements is having a daughter who loves veterinary medicine and who will continue his legacy. Dr. Stephanie Kane Suiter graduated from UF CVM in 2012

and works alongside her father at Care Animal Hospital. Dr. Kane and his wife, Cheri, founded True-Pet Wellness Program, which offers plans to advance pet health wellness care through client and patient management.

Dr. Kane’s commitment and service to the University of Florida are outstanding. His commitment goes beyond the Gators embroidered on every pair of scrubs.

Louis "Red" Larson Sr.

Louis Ellwood Larson, known as “Red,” was born on March 9, 1924, in Brandon, South Dakota. His family moved to south Florida in 1932. His first job as a paperboy for the Miami Daily News allowed him to purchase his first cow. He worked summers and weekends for a local dairyman making two dollars a day for hand-milking 40 cows, twice a day. While in high school, he served as an FFA State Officer. He completed high school, but before graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII and became a B-26 pilot. After the war, he attended the University of Miami. In 1947 he married Reda and started dairy farming. From 1947 to today, Mr. Larson has continued his life’s work of dairy farming and still owns and operates several dairies in Okeechobee County. The Larson family now has multiple farms covering thousands of acres. They are a significant source of locally produced milk for south Florida. Two sons, Woody and John, and two grandsons, Travis and Jacob, also are in the business.

In 1956, under Mr. Larson’s leadership, a group of dairymen formed a milk marketing cooperative, Independent Dairy Farmers Association. With his consistent leadership, all of the original milk cooperatives in Florida have been merged into Southeast Milk, Inc. This organization now handles essentially all of the milk produced in Florida and half of that produced in Georgia. Mr. Larson developed a relationship with UF/IFAS as his operation grew and he became an early adopter of improved methods for feeding, housing and milking. He also generously allowed UF/IFAS dairy scientists to use his operations as a living laboratory. He was called to serve on the USDA’s National Dairy Advisory Committee during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, where he helped develop present-day milk marketing techniques. He is the only Floridian to have served as president of the National Milk Producers Federation.

Recognizing the need to provide a stable milk supply at a fair price and be a good environmental steward of the land, Mr. Larson has been a leader in

establishing modern day systems to manage waste, recycle nutrients and use reclaimed water. In 2005, the Larsons received the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Environmental Leadership Award. Other awards include the 1999 Dairyman of the Century, Olympian Dairyman’s Award and the 2005 Southeast Farmer of the Year Award. Mr. Larson was elected to the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame and the Dairy Hall of Fame, and received the Award of Distinction from UF’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Although he never attended the University of Florida, Mr. Larson is a true champion of the university and its College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. He was named an Honorary Alumnus by the UF Alumni Association in 2006. Three of his children are UF alumni, along with seven grandchildren. In tribute to Mr. Larson’s achievements, his four children established three endowments at UF/IFAS for a total of $1.5 million to support teaching, research and extension programs and the statewide 4-H Youth Development Program. The Dairy Science building on campus is named in his honor. In 2015, in honor of 30 years of the Florida Dairy Farmers' continual support for UF athletics, Mr. Larson represented the industry on Florida Field to make the coin toss before the Vanderbilt game. Go Gators!

Leader, innovator, family man and friend to all who meet him, Mr. Larson has truly distinguished himself in his chosen profession.

Marjorie Reitz Turnbull

Experienced in leadership development, advocacy, consensus building, governmental and legislative affairs, community relations and public-private partnerships, Marjorie Reitz Turnbull has devoted more than 40 years of service to the state of Florida in elected, appointed and volunteer positions. Ms. Turnbull served as a Leon County Commissioner from 1988-1994. She was a member of the Governor’s Environmental Education Foundation of Florida Board from 1990-1993 and a member of the Florida Association of Counties Board of Directors from 1993-1994.

From 1994 to 2000, Ms. Turnbull served Leon County in the Florida House of Representatives. As a member of the Education Appropriations, Higher Education and K-12 Education committees, she was successful in achieving increased funding for graduate research institutions in the state, including the University of Florida.

Her public service extends beyond governmental responsibilities. Ms. Turnbull is a former member of the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University Board of Trustees and the board of directors of the State Foundation for Florida’s Colleges. Among her current activities are the Institutional Review Board of the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, State Board of the Children’s Home Society, Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of Prime Meridian Bank. In 2008, Leadership Tallahassee recognized her contributions to the community by awarding her the Lifetime Leadership Award. In her professional life she served on the staff of the Florida House of Representatives, as assistant director for Developmental Disabilities and director of Health Planning for the State of Florida. Prior to retirement she was vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the Tallahassee Community College Foundation. In this role, Ms. Turnbull spearheaded the foundation’s first major gifts campaign, which increased the foundation’s assets from $250,000 to more than $10 million including more than 80 endowed scholarships and more than 500 scholarships reserved

for middle school students, who will be first-generation college students.

As an undergraduate in political science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Ms. Turnbull was a member of the Student Senate, Mortar Board, Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Delta Delta Sorority. What is your proudest Gator moment?Speaking as a researcher about my scientific accomplishments and field work at UF in Centre ValBio in Madagascar and speaking with other international researchers with the support of my fellow Gators in the crowd. What is something every Gator should know?Every Gator should know that the sky is the limit, and the University of Florida is limitless. This is a community of people who are dedicated to ensuring your success and your chance at a future. What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition? My favorite tradition is plopping down under a tree in the Plaza of the Americas with a delicious plate of Krishna lunch. It’s the perfect way to catch up with your friends while taking a break. Who are the Gators who inspire you? I have never been more inspired than by my wildlife professors. They have acted as my support system here, helped me pursue my dreams and reassured me that if you really work for it, it will happen. What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator? The most important lesson I learned from a fellow Gator was that everyone has a personal limit and not to over burden myself. We have friends, a support system, faculty and colleagues here who are willing to help out. What was your most fulfilling UF role? At the Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium at UF, I encouraged middle school students to follow their dreams – dreams of what they believed will give them a happy life – despite social and family pressures. Which of your UF affiliations or activities nurtured you most? Joining the student chapter of the Wildlife Society and learning what it truly means to be a professional in my field is what nurtured me the most. I received a great support system and was exposed to research opportunities and field experiences.

Katelyn MayerFour-Year Scholar

What is your proudest Gator moment? Though countless moments throughout the years have made me proud to be a Florida Gator, nothing can beat the cold February day in 2013 when I first read that I was accepted to become a student at my favorite university. I had been nervous for months! Where would I go if I was not accepted? Florida State University? Never! Needless to say, there were shouts, tears of joy and spontaneous dancing that day.

What is something every Gator should know? Every year as a Gator is special and unique. Your freshman year will not look the same as your sophomore year. Your junior year is nothing like your senior year. Yet, every year holds special memories. Rather than longing to have your freshman year back or yearning for graduation day, live in the moment. Allow yourself to enjoy the “good old days” while you are still living them!

What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition?A friend of mine from high school asked me what it was like to be a Florida Gator, and I urged her to go to a Gator football game and see! Sitting in the student section among cheers so loud that you cannot hear a person speaking next to you is indescribable. Putting your arm around a fellow student, who may be a stranger, to sing “We Are the Boys” forms a bond that I would have never experienced without the Gators!

Who are the Gators who inspire you?Due to the immensity of The Gator Nation, it is difficult to name specific members who inspire, since many do! I have a strong admiration for the faculty of the College of Education, who dedicate their lives to improving the education of future teachers, when very few students have the desire to teach. I believe many do not value and respect those in the education field as much as they should, yet COE’s faculty remains.

What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator?I think one of the greatest lessons I have shared from one Gator to another was the importance of having a passion for your chosen career path. A woman, who I now consider one of my closest friends, had chosen a major her freshman year that she quickly discovered she did not enjoy. She meant to keep it to please her family, but I encouraged her to explore other options.

Kelly SchwanebeckFour-Year Scholar

What is your proudest Gator moment? My proudest Gator moment is the day I was accepted into the University of Florida.

What is something every Gator should know?UF is truly a school unlike many others – we, as students, have so many great opportunities at our disposal, and everyone should take advantage of as many as possible while they can. What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition?I love the atmosphere at all our sporting events. The Gator Nation is so strong, singing “We Are the Boys” and chanting our cheers brings everyone together and is a lot of fun. Who are the Gators who inspire you?I am inspired by the principal investigators and the veterinary students that I work with on the dairy research project. They are so well educated, hardworking and truly passionate about what we do. What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator? As a Gator for a Day ambassador, the thing I always stress to prospective students (many of whom attend UF now) is to step out of their comfort zone, to join organizations to meet people and to get involved. What was your most fulfilling UF role?Being a Gator for a Day ambassador was very fulfilling. Naturally, students face a lot of anxiety about going to college, especially at a big school like UF. Having our (Gator for a day) day together be the thing that makes up prospective students' minds about coming here is very rewarding – knowing I had something to do with it. Which of your UF affiliations or activities nurtured you most?I feel that my animal science courses, as well as training a dairy heifer for the UF livestock show, really opened my eyes to a whole other possibility for my career in food animal medicine. This was not something I previously considered, but I have really taken to the field in seeing the care UF provides to our dairy herd through the dairy research project. How will you pay it forward? I received a very helpful amount of financial aid in my

undergraduate career and hope to someday create a fund to give out annual scholarships to other students in need.

What will your legacy be?I feel that I made a lot of progress on my research project in Dr. Barkley’s lab, and I will be able to pass along my knowledge, skills and data to new undergraduate researchers in our laboratory so that my project may continue on after me. I laid a solid foundation and feel they will be able to make real, substantial discoveries from here.

What do you bleed orange and blue?I bleed orange and blue, not only in cheering on our Gator sports teams, but largely in the pride I have in being a Gator. I have learned so much at UF that I don’t think I would have elsewhere. I value my degree, the people I have met and the experiences I have gained, which have made me who I am today.

What is your proudest Gator moment? My proudest Gator moment was getting my acceptance letter to the University of Florida. At age 16, I achieved one of my life-long goals to officially become a Gator. After visiting the school at a young age, I fell in love with the environment and the campus. I was so proud to have accomplished something that I had only ever dreamed. What is something every Gator should know? The University of Florida exemplifies excellence. This excellence can be seen in academics, sports and in the accomplishments of UF graduates. The University of Florida gives you every opportunity and resource to succeed, but it is your job to utilize the resources. It will not be easy, but you are capable of anything. What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition?“We Are The Boys” is my favorite Gator tradition. After the third quarter of every home Gator game, strangers and friends alike put their arms around each other, sway in unison and sing. This tradition exemplifies the spirit of friendship and unity of The Gator Nation. In addition, this tradition reminds me that, even as an alumna, I will always be a part of the Gator family. Who are the Gators who inspire you?My mother has always been my greatest source of inspiration. She graduated from UF with a Master of Science in Nursing. She has helped mold me into the person I am today. She helped foster my drive and ambition for success. In addition, I learned that having a big heart and giving back to others is the greatest accomplishment. My mother is one of the many reasons that I decided to pursue a career in medicine. I will always be grateful to have been raised by such an inspiring woman. What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator? My best friend, a fellow Gator, taught me a lesson that I will forever remember. My friend taught me that my time at UF and my future academic ventures are a journey. He taught me that, although there is a long road ahead, I must not be so focused on the destination that I forget to enjoy the journey. My journey at UF has been magnificent, and I hope to continue my journey here at the University of Florida’s medical school.

What was your most fulfilling UF role?My most fulfilling role at UF was being a mentor to a child with autism. Every week, I work with this child. He is the highlight of my week, and I think I have learned more from him than he has from me. No matter what mood I am in, every time I see him I cannot help but smile. He is so full of life and happiness. He has taught me that one of the greatest joys in life is laughter and being yourself. Together, we make great strides. He has learned how to cope with his environment and how to interact with other children. I made a great friend, and I hope that we continue to inspire each other. Which of your UF affiliations or activities nurtured you most?Being able to utilize the UF group fitness classes and workout facilities has nurtured me. They have helped me maintain optimal physical health. Fitness has also allowed me to alleviate stress and make lifelong friends.

How will you pay it forward?I want to continue my education at the UF medical school. During medical school, I will continue to learn and excel. As a physician, I will teach or practice medicine at the University of Florida. My aspiration is to reach out to other young students and encourage them to become great healers. I hope to give back everything the university has taught me and more. My goal is to make groundbreaking contributions to medicine and to research.

What will your legacy be?My legacy from the University of Florida will be the lives that I have impacted through patient care, research and volunteering. I plan on continuing this legacy throughout medical school and my future career as a physician. If I have touched or improved just one life during this process, then my legacy will be complete. What do you bleed orange and blue?Every part of me bleeds orange and blue. I have made so many great memories at the University of Florida. As an alumna, I will continue to be a part of the University of Florida. Every Saturday home game at the Swamp, I will be in the crowd, arms locked right over left. Once I have established my career, I hope to give back to the university, either as a professor or a physician at UF Health. I will forever bleed orange and blue.

Awards to Outstanding ScholarsThe Selection Committee for Outstanding Scholars considers grade point average, curriculum, academic awards, research projects or honors thesis. Two-year scholars must have earned an Associate of Arts degree at a Florida state college and have completed the remainder of their degree at UF.

Brooke CiceroOutstanding Student Leader

What is your proudest Gator moment? My proudest Gator moment was representing UF at the Southeastern Panhellenic Conference in Atlanta, Georgia and getting to meet so many amazing leaders from all over the United States.

What is something every Gator should know?Every Gator needs to know how to correctly do the Gator chomp. Right over left, always! What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition? My favorite Gator tradition is attending the Homecoming Gator Growl parade and concert. I love getting to see the spirit of The Gator Nation come together and celebrate such an amazing school. Who are the Gators who inspire you?The Gators who inspire me are those who have constantly pushed me to become a better leader, student and friend. What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator? The most important lesson that I’ve learned these past four years is to always believe in yourself. Academics can be tough as it is, especially on top of extra-curricular activities, but never give up on your dream. You will be amazed at what you can achieve if you just push yourself!

What was your most fulfilling UF role?My most fulfilling UF role was as membership vice president for the Panhellenic council. I had the opportunity to grow as a leader and most importantly provide an experience for thousands of young women through the Greek community.

Which of your UF affiliations or activities nurtured you most?My role as membership vice president of the Panhellenic council nurtured me most by providing unimaginable opportunities to meet inspiring leaders from all over. My experiences while serving in this role truly shaped me into who I am today.

Jacob DuvalOutstanding Student Leader

What is your proudest Gator moment? My proudest Gator moment was planning, attending and speaking at an event that both the vice president of Student Affairs and the president of the university attended. It was the Interfraternity Council’s first Veteran’s Appreciation Dinner, and I have a feeling it will be an annual event for many years to come.

What is something every Gator should know?Every Gator should know what it feels like to attend a home football game. Even if you’re not a sports fan, it is an amazing experience. Nothing compares to the energy, excitement and school spirit that you feel walking into a stadium packed with 90,000 plus Gator fans. What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition? My favorite Gator tradition is when the entire stadium sings “We Are the Boys” at the end of the third quarter during every home football game. Seeing the entire stadium sway side to side, while doing so myself with my friends, is a sight and memory I will never forget. Who are the Gators who inspire you? There are many Gators who inspire me. In all of my leadership positions, I am inspired by my predecessors, from whom I have learned more than I can explain. My brother, who graduated from UF in 2011, inspired me to attend the university, choose my major and choose the fraternity I joined. Finally, my girlfriend of over three years inspires me academically by being the hardest working student that I know. What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator? The most important lesson I have both learned from a fellow Gator and taught to a fellow Gator that it is OK to say “no.” This lesson was originally taught to me by my mother, but reaffirmed by several of my predecessors as a powerful leadership and life tool. What was your most fulfilling UF role?My most fulfilling role was my semester-long stint as vice president of operations for the Interfraternity council. I was able to coordinate many events and operations of IFC and see the direct impact of these events on the Greek and Gainesville communities.

What is your proudest Gator moment?Undoubtedly, my proudest moment at UF is when I was selected for the University of Florida Hall of Fame. What is something every Gator should know?I feel that every Gator should know the words to the Alma Mater – including the seldom sung second verse. Florida football pregame stadium activities are great, but there is nothing that gets me more hyped than the singing of the Alma Mater! What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition? My favorite traditions were completing the F-Book and receiving my Gator wrap ring. I was able to share both of these experiences with my mom, who is a UF alumna. Who are the Gators who inspire you?The Gators who inspire me most are the University of Florida presidents. President J. Wayne Reitz has been of a particular influence in my life for multiple reasons. First, he hired Ray Graves, who then recruited Steve Spurrier, my favorite Florida player and coach. Second, he expanded UF. Without his infrastructural enrichment, I do not believe that we would have the capacity to support all of the students who wish to matriculate into UF, or the classic big school feel of an SEC institution.

Lastly, he was a pioneer of my discipline and prospective career path. Reitz was a renowned agriculturalist and was highly regarded as a major contributor to Latin American agricultural studies and policy. As a Spanish and Agricultural Education and Communication dual major, I look to Reitz’ career for guidance on my way to becoming a university president. What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator?During my freshman year, a friend obtaining his Ph.D., shared with me one of the most impactful lessons I could learn at UF. Namely, “one should always say ‘hi.’” Saying “hi” could very well be the highlight of a person’s day. What was your most fulfilling UF role?Serving as a 2014 Preview staffer was an absolute honor and privilege! As a Preview staffer, I aided in

the successful social and academic transition of 6,500 incoming freshman students, 2,000 incoming transfer students and over 10,000 family members.

Which of your UF affiliations or activities nurtured you most?I have been blessed to serve on a variety of university committees that have allowed me to exercise my student voice in university governance. Shared governance positively affects UF, and I believe that is something from which all students, faculty and staff can benefit. I have definitely learned management, collaboration, organizational and teamwork lessons from being an “undergraduate voice.”

How will you pay it forward? Thanks to the generosity of UF friends and alumni, I received several academic and leadership scholarships while attending UF. I would like to pay it forward by contributing to these needed and much appreciated scholarship funds as a UF alumnus. What will your legacy be?Due to the lessons that I have learned at UF, I am confident that I may represent myself, the University of Florida and The Gator Nation proudly at work, home and in society as a servant leader. What do you bleed orange and blue?Through exams, nasty weather and little sleep since freshman year, I have not missed rising on Thursday or Friday morning of home football games to get a BEAT shirt from Emerson Hall.

Chain of Office

This custom-made ornament is worn with the president’s regalia, symbolizing the authority

and responsibilities of the office. The chain is engraved with the names and service years

of the university presidents. The medallion’s centerpiece is a 1.3-carat diamond.

Academic Mace

Dating back to the Middle Ages, the mace symbolizes strength and

authority. The UF ceremonial mace was created for the university’s sesquicentennial celebration

in 2003. The 70-inch staff features an alligator sitting atop a globe. The four pillars supporting the

globe represent the four original colleges: Agriculture, Engineering, Law, and Liberal Arts. The staff

is carved from cherry wood. The university’s chief marshal, who leads all academic processions,

carries the mace.

Caps and Gowns, An Explanation

The academic regalia worn by graduating students and faculty at today's commencement ceremonies evolved from a style of dress worn by members of guilds and religious orders in medieval times. The academic gown is worn by individuals who have earned a degree in higher education. In addition, hoods are worn by graduate degree candidates, but not by undergraduate degree candidates.

At the University of Florida, the lining of the hood has a blue chevron on an orange background to represent the university colors. University faculty members who hold degrees from another college or university wear the colors of their alma mater.

The velvet edging on the academic hood is the color that represents the particular degree held by the wearer. Agricultural and Life Sciences and Forest Resources and Conservation share maize edging; Design, Construction and Planning and Building Construction are blue violet; Audiology degrees have colonial blue edging; Business Administration and Accounting are drab; Dentistry is lilac; Education is light blue; Engineering degrees are represented by orange edging; Fine Arts degrees have brown edging; Health and Human Performance is sage green; Journalism and Communications is garnet; Law is purple; Liberal Arts is white and Liberal Sciences is gold yellow; Medicine is green; Music is pink; Natural Resources and Environment is antique gold; Nursing is apricot; Doctor of Pharmacy is olive; Philosophy is royal blue; Public Health degrees have salmon pink edging; Rehabilitation Counseling degrees have Nile green edging; and Veterinary Medicine is gray.

Distinctions among sleeves indicate the type of degree held by the wearer. A long, pointed sleeve indicates a bachelor’s degree, while a long, closed sleeve with a slit near the upper part of the arm designates a master’s degree. A round, open sleeve identifies a doctoral degree.

The doctoral regalia also has velvet running on the rest of the gown, including cross bars on the sleeve. Colored tassels on the degree candidates’ caps indicate a candidate’s school or college.
