GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONYSaturday, May 19, 2012Graduate degrees will be awarded at the Ryan Center (no tickets required).
❖ 12:15 p.m. —Candidates assemble in academic attire in the west corridor of the Ryan Center. Enter through the north entrance (Lincoln Almond Plaza). Please be prompt. The marshals will organize the line of march by degree to be conferred and in alphabetical order.
❖ 1 p.m.—Commencement exercises begin in the Ryan Center. Graduate degree recipients will march into the arena and sit in designated areas. During the ceremony, they will be escorted to the stage by University marshals and file across the platform. Doctoral recipients will be hooded and escorted by their major professors.
❖ 3 p.m.—A President’s Reception at Hope Commons will honor all graduating students and their families.
ACADEMIC AWARD CEREMONY❖ 3:30 p.m.—The presentation of the University Academic
Excellence Awards will be held in Edwards Auditorium, followed by light refreshments at the University Club.

IN THE EVENT OF RAIN, (Sunday, May 20) the Main Commence-ment Ceremony will be held at the Ryan Center. Bachelor’s degree recipients will be allowed two guest tickets to the Ryan Center. We regret that in the event of rain, due to space constraints, graduate degree recipients cannot attend the Main Commencement Ceremony.Tickets are required and will be given to graduates upon their purchase of academic regalia at the University Bookstore in the Memorial Union. Additional guests should go to the individual college ceremony sites listed on the next page. The Main Commencement Ceremony will be simulcast to the indoor ceremony locations.
If the rain plan is implemented, the decision will be made in the early morning, and information will be available on the Web site (uri.edu) and automated phone lines (401.874.7669, 401.874.1000). Signs will also be posted at all campus entrances.

MAIN COMMENCEMENT CEREMONYSunday, May 20, 2012Undergraduate and honorary degrees will be awarded at the Main Commencement Ceremony. Graduate degree recipients are welcome to participate. (No tickets are required if the Main Commencement Ceremony is held on the Quadrangle.)
Seating for families and guests on the Quadrangle is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be guaranteed. Folding chairs are allowed. People who need disability assistance should refer to page 9. Certified service animals are always welcome; family pets are not permitted. Commencement programs will be available at information booths and from student ushers.
❖ Noon—Bachelor’s degree recipients assemble in academic attire on Lower College Road in areas designated for the various colleges. Faculty and graduate students who choose to participate in this ceremony assemble between Ranger and Quinn Halls.
❖ 12:30 p.m.—Commencement exercises begin and will run approximately 90 minutes.
A live Webcast of the Main Commencement ceremonies will be accessible through a link from the University home page, uri.edu. The ceremonies will also be simulcast on WRIU, 90.3. For more information, visit uri.edu/commencement or call the URI Commencement Hotline at 401.874.1234.
INDIVIDUAL COLLEGE CEREMONY LOCATIONS
❖ PRIOR TO MAIN COMMENCEMENT The ROTC will hold its commissioning ceremony in front of
Keaney Gym at 9 a.m. (rain site: Ryan Center Concourse). The Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education
will hold its ceremony in front of Roosevelt Hall under a tent at 10 a.m. (rain or shine).

ELIGIBILITY TO MARCH
Graduate candidates: Participation in the graduate commencement ceremony acknow ledges the completion of degree requirements and signifies academic accomplishment of the highest order. Graduate candidates eligible to march in the ceremonies include the following: • Those who have completed their degree requirements by
August 2011, December 2011, or May 2012• Those who will have completed their course work during or before
the spring 2012 semester and will have successfully defended their dissertations/theses (if required) by Friday, April 13, 2012
• Those in programs with required internships who will have completed their course work during or before the spring 2012 semester; defended their dissertations/theses (if a dissertation or thesis is required) by Friday, April 13, 2012; and completed their internships by Thursday, September 15, 2012.
Undergraduate candidates: Those who have completed their degree requirements by December 2011 or May or August 2012 are eligible to participate in the ceremonies.

CAPS, GOWNS, HOODS, AND HONOR CORDSIf you plan to participate in the Commencement Ceremony, you must wear academic regalia, which can be purchased from the University Bookstore in the Memorial Union building. The bookstore will have all academic regalia available for sale from early April to May 20 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday). These items are not returnable. Student ID is required.
Honor cords are not available at the Bookstore and must be purchased directly from the honor societies. For details visit uri.edu/commencement/information.
DIPLOMASDiplomas for bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients will be mailed by late summer, after grades have been processed. Doctoral degree recipients will receive their diplomas at the Graduate Commencement Ceremony. Diplomas will not be released to students who remain financially indebted to the University. Please be sure that your correct mailing address is on file with the Office of Enrollment Services.
PUBLICATION OF YOUR NAMEIf you want URI to submit your name to the Commencement Pro-gram, check to make sure you haven’t restricted access to informa-tion about yourself in e-Campus, which the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) entitles you to do.
To see if you have a FERPA restriction on your record, sign on to your e-Campus account and use the following navigation: Self-Service Student Center Personal Information other personal (use the pull-down menu) Privacy Settings (click the “Go” circle)
“FERPA Restrictions” screen will appear. The following information must be free of any restrictions (or releasable): Names, Major, Degree, Honors/Awards, and Academic level. Be sure to save any changes you make.
Your failure to comply with these instructions will result in your name being left out of the Commencement Program, as well as the online database used to provide information of your achievements to newspapers. If you have any questions about this procedure, please contact the Office of Enrollment Services at 401.874.4467 or [email protected].

To inform your newspaper (or any other publication) of your status as a URI graduate, visit uri.edu/news/ commencement and follow the instructions for submitting your name.
FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENTS AND PHOTOGRAPHSInformation on printed announcements, suitable for mailing to family and friends, is available from the URI Bookstore (401.874.2722), the Commencement Web site uri.edu/commencement, and jostens.com.
Formal photographs may be ordered from Chappell at gradimages.com (800.424.3686).
Audience members are not permitted near the graduate-seating or platform areas at any time. Audience members may take photographs during the ceremony only while seated.
YEARBOOKIf you had a senior portrait taken, you do NOT need to order a year-book. A single copy of the yearbook is included with the sitting fee.
Yearbooks can be ordered online at jostens.com for $60 each. For more information go to uri.edu/yearbook. Yearbooks will in-clude pictures from Commencement and will be mailed in late fall to the address you provide. For more information or to order additional copies of the yearbook, contact the Renaissance yearbook staff at 401.874.5897 or [email protected].
DISABILITY ASSISTANCEIf you have a disability and need an accommodation, please call 401.874.2098 at least three business days in advance. For TTY assis-tance, please call the Rhode Island Relay Service at 1.800.745.5555.
• Disability Services Stations are located at the north Ryan Center entrance on Saturday and in front of Bliss Hall on Sunday (for rain plan, in the Memorial Union Atrium 1).
• FM listening devices, wheelchairs, and transportation assistance are available at these locations.
• Sign language interpreters for both the Main and Graduate Commencement ceremonies will be provided as requested. Requests for additional sign language interpreters at individual college ceremonies should be made no later than April 30. Seating registration for this service is suggested.
• Disability Seating will be indicated on maps in the Commencement Program.
• Wheelchair reservations are required and must be made by May 11. Please note that reservations can be held only until noon on Saturday (Graduate Ceremony) and until 11:30 a.m. on Sunday (Main Ceremony). After these times, wheelchairs will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to individuals without reservations. If you own a wheelchair, we recommend that you bring it with you.
• Reservations for disability seating at the Main Ceremony on Sunday are required by May 11. Reservations will be held until 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. If the Sunday rain plan is in effect, general disability seating in the Ryan Center will be honored only for those holding Rain Tickets. For those not holding Rain Tickets, general disability seating is available in each of the other indoor venues (see pages 3 and 4).
• Priority Parking Permits for individuals with physical or medical conditions, can be reserved by calling the Visitors Center at 401.874.2133 no later than May 11.
TRAVEL INFORMATION
LONG DISTANCE TRAVELPeter Pan Bus Lines (1.800.343.9999 or peterpanbus.com).Amtrak (1.800.872.7245 or amtrak.com); the Kingston, R.I., station is about a mile from URI. RIPTA Flex Service is available for trans-portation to campus from the station. To schedule a pickup, please call 1.877.906.FLEX (3539) 48 hours in advance. T.F. Green State Airport is about 20 miles north of URI. Bus service and car rentals are available at the airport.
DRIVING TO URI KINGSTON CAMPUS MAIN ENTRANCEFrom the north: Take I-95 South to Exit 9 (a left-lane exit onto Rt. 4 South). Follow Rt. 4 to Rt. 1 South, and then turn right onto Rt. 138 West, just past the Holiday Inn. (Don’t take the first 138 exit; this takes you east to Newport.) Follow 138 west approximately four miles. Take a right onto Upper College Road, at the main entrance to the campus.

From the south: Take I-95 North to Exit 3A and follow 138 East for about 11 miles. Take a left onto Upper College Road at the main entrance to the campus.
Please note that the main entrance may not be the best route to the parking area for your individual college ceremony site. Go to uri.edu/commencement for recommended parking instructions.
DRIVING TO THE RYAN CENTERFrom the north: Take I-95 South to Exit 9 (a left-lane exit) onto Rt. 4 South. Follow to Exit 5B, Rt. 102 North, towards Exeter. Turn left onto South County Trail (Rt. 2 South) to the intersection with Rt. 138. Turn left onto Rt. 138 East. At the junction of Rt. 110, turn left onto Plains Road and follow parking signs to the Ryan Center.From the south: Take I-95 North to Rt. 138 East. Follow Rt. 138 East to traffic light at the Rt. 110 intersection (Plains Road). Turn left onto Plains Road and follow signs to parking area.
PARKING SERVICESIf you arrive by car, University police and security officers will direct you to designated parking lots within walking distance of the commencement ceremonies. Graduate Commencement (Saturday): Attendees may park on the North and South sides of the Ryan Center in lots 20 and 35. See map on pages 6 and 7.Main Commencement (Sunday): See map on pages 6 and 7 for parking locations. For details on where to park visit uri.edu/commencement
GETTING AROUND CAMPUSParking lots and individual events may be located up to a mile apart. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Many campus paths lead uphill; some are unpaved. The RIPTA transit service will be operating throughout the campus. See pages 6 and 7 for a map showing the route and stops of this service.
