GREETINGS!. On M ay 8 t h I b e c a me t he

President of RMR as Rick Seiferth resigned as President. Under RMR’s bylaws, when the President resigns, the 1st Vice President steps into the Presidency. Rick was a dedicated servant to RMR and the club was lucky to have him aboard. I thank

Rick for being gracious during the transition. I am very

grateful to him and he will be missed.

The f i r s t order o f b u s i n e s s a s President was to fill the vacancy position on the Board. The

1st Vice President p o s i t i o n w a s n o w

open. After discussion with the Board we decided

to move Brian Lay from 2nd VP to 1st VP. Vicki Cox-Jones moved from Secretary to 2nd VP. Russ Rydberg moved from Newsletter Editor to Secretary, and Tom Champion moved from assistant newsletter editor to Newsletter Editor. I commend the Board for making this transition so seamless.

As I am writing this article, I have been President for a little less than two weeks. What vision should I have for RMR? We are all initially brought to the club because of our love of the Porsche marque. My love began when, as a child, my next-door neighbor was a PCA member and he would take me to DE events in his 1957 Speedster. I was hooked. Later in my life, when I could afford my first Porsche, I joined PCA and started attending events.

However, the love for the marque alone does not make the club. It’s the interaction with the members. The common interests. The friendships that are made. All of this is made

possible through the events that are put on by the volunteers of RMR and PCA. I spoke to Erik Berhendsen last week and I think he hit it on the head – “it’s all about the fun”. The love of the marque brings us here, but it is the fun that keeps us here. During my term as President I will work hard to bring the two together and make membership in RMR irresistibly enjoyable.

I want to get to know the members. I want to be accessible. I will attend as many events as my schedule will allow. Please approach me and say hello. If you have concerns, please contact me. I want to hear from you. I look forward and am honored to be your President.

PORSCHES IN THE MIST! Hope you have been enjoying the

sun, rain and drizzle! The flowers are looking good but the cars are always getting dirty! Well this month is the time of year to shine up your car and show it at the Concoursd’Elegance! Please share with any non-PCA members and encourage them to come. Our club will be having a table to expose everyone to the fun and benefits of PCA. I hope you come out and see me and all the spectacular cars!

Early in May we had our f irst Northern Breakfast Club meeting and Northern Colorado Social at Ed Carroll Porsche! What a great turnout at both events despite the drizzly and foggy weather! Our hosts at Ed Carroll were excited to have us and treated to authentic German brats, pretzels, and beers. I met some new people that have never met before! And it was very cool to to see the new 911T on display! We had some great raff le prizes. And one lucky winner received a single day pass to the Porsche Experience

in Los Angeles!!! Thank you to Vicki Cox-Jones for planting the seed for this social. A big thank you to Adolf Zoch and Jon Fruend of Ed Carroll for putting this event together! And thank you to my helpers: Brian Williams, Dave Jackson, and Harry Jones!

We just had our Foothills Tour yesterday as I write this. Another drizzly and foggy day for half of our tour. We had a great turnout despite the weather. At times we had dry weather and great views! I noticed a few other drivers really enjoying the sight of our nice mix of various Porsches. We stayed to our original route and had mostly dry roads over Squaw Pass. We also drove through a few clouds with low visibility, but all made it safely to our destination for some Mountain Pies from Beau Jo’s Pizza! Thank you to Mark Zalmanek ofAutoworks Colorado for opening up his shop for us to start our tour and treating us to some coffee and pastries! Also, thank you to Harry Jones, Vicki Cox-Jones, Becky Chase,

Dave Jackson, and Tom Radow for helping me out!

One thing I see over and over again is how people love to drive their cars in all kinds of weather and get together to meet new friends and catch up with others. I am really looking forward to our socials in late May and mid-June this year. We also have a wonderful event to celebrate our 60th Anniversary in Vail. I am looking forward to spending 3 days of fun with some fellow members! Don’t forget to get your 60th Anniversary shirts!

Don’t forget to check out our calendar on our website rmr.pca.org and to read those emails from “enews” for the latest information on all events Porsche!

TRACK REVIEW: THE “NEW” HIGH PLAINS RACEWAY“MUSIC TO MY EARS!”

That’s right…music to my ears. More about that in a bit.

We e x p e r i e nc e d t he ne w ly resurfaced track at our f irst DE at High Plains Raceway (HPR) – WOW!

Have you ever water skied on a calm lake where it feels like you’re skiing on “glass?” That’s what HPRfeels like now!

I’ve gone around Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 165 mph and that’s the smoothest asphalt ever. That’s what HPRfeels like now!

Despite going out with a student and having extra weight in the carduring my sessions, I was within 0.04 seconds of my personal best, and that’s after almost eight months of non-driving “rust!” I felt like Patrick Long until I learned that almost everyone was 2–4 seconds faster on the new surface. So much for my own pat-on-the-back!

As usual, it’s all about the turns. The smoother surface allows for laterentry and less trail-braking. There is so much more “new” speed around the corners – what grip! In fact, there is so much grip that when Dave Nelson was following me, he noticed that I was pushing it so much that my front right tire was off the ground while negotiating Turn #2; I thought that only happened in rare magazine shots of someone like “Quick Vic”Elford!

Another surprise…when I got home I found that my tire wear was much less, and get this…there was absolutely no racing rubber on the front or side of my car – a first!

Back to music to my ears. The biggest change was that your tires actually talk to you more - A LOT MORE! As you know, great drivers have all of their senses at work, and this was a new sensation that took

several laps to get used to. They squealed louder the more you pushed it. The question was, what’s the grip limit, the breaking-away point? That was really fun to learn.

Because of the new grip, it also got me thinking about changing my braking points, driving line, turn speed, and yes, car set-up. It’s just like going to a new track where you have to learn it and tune your car to get the best results.

What’s cool is that driving HPR is a new adventure without having to go to another track. Get out there and see for yourself!

16 HighGear | Celebrating 60 Years | 1958 - 2018

THE HISTORY OF LADIES DAYRMR’s Ladies’ Day started in the

late 1990’s as a way to introduce RMR women to their husband’s hobby and for the women to have the track to themselves. The first Ladies’ Day was started as a picnic potluck by Kathy Fricke at the now-defunct Second Creek Raceway. As Susan Bucknam wrote, “Second Creek Raceway offered

a 5 o’clock to dark free evening and around 10 of us showed up with a pot luck. I still remember trying to not let the roasting pan with the pork loin in it spill onto the interior.” Kathy Fricke remembers there being a rainstorm, but that the ladies still got some track time.

From that auspicious start Ladies’ Day became an annual event. Susan Bucknam wrote, “We had great themes, most memorable was the Beach Party - with hula dances performed by some lovely gentlemen.” In 2000, the following excerpt by Kathy Curnow appeared in High Gear: “Leave the laundry/dishes/housework behind. Sneak out of the house on

Saturday with your partner’s keys and car (or your own car), and meet us on the track for a day of fun. This will be a day for smoothing out your line, conquering those first day jitters, or working on those new techniques you’ve been wanting to try without any ‘testosterone’ sneaking up on your exhaust.” The article further notes,

“This event will consume only $70.00 of your shopping money.” The post event wrap-up article (also by Kathy Curnow) reported, “[We] had eleven novice drivers that put their first time jitters to the test. Thanks to all the volunteering masculine instructors that pitched in to help the female instructors, we had enough teaching expertise to go around... Some wine and cheese finished off this ‘laid back day’ at the track.”

Over the years fun Ladies’ Day themes continued. 2004’s theme was ‘Ladies’ Day at the Oasis’. For 2005 the theme was ‘Girls Just Wanna...’ Both events were chaired by Andrea Rossiter and Peggy Englert and were

the last to be held at Second Creek Raceway. From the 2005 ad: “As this year’s theme suggests, you’ll get to fill in the blank and define fun at Ladies’ Day on your own terms.” In contrast, 2007’s Ladies’ Day High Gear ad asked the tongue-in-cheek question, ‘Ma’am, do you know how fa st you were going?’ and was presented

as a Traf f ic Infraction summons. The “arresting off icers” were co-chairs Martha Vail and Tamela Cash. This was the first Ladies’ Day to be held at the Colorado State Patrol Track in Golden. In 2010, a Tupp e r w a r e Pa r t y was held at High Plains Raceway for Ladies’ Day (Really!). For 2012, the Ladies were told to “Kick off Your Heels and Drive it Like You Stole It.”

My first Ladies’ Day was the ‘Hell on Heels’ themed-ladies day, cha ired by Luann Dodge and Nancy Warren in 2013. From the High Gear wrap up article: “[We] had a most unusual event take place. A baby doe was born at the track in the afternoon and

was quickly named ‘Porsche’! Thanks to the AMR ambulance guys who gently moved Porsche far from the track—so she and her mom could be safely reunited.”

‘Beauties and Their Beasts’ is this year’s theme for Ladies’ Day 2018, to be held at the Colorado State Patrol Track on Saturday, August 11th. Registration opens on June 11th at motorsportreg.com. Don’t miss out on the fun this year!

Arapahoe Community College5900 S Santa Fe Drive

Littleton, ColoradoA Benefit for Ability Connection Colorado

http://www.abilityconnectioncolorado.org/special-events/colorado-concours

The Colorado Concours d’Elegance & Exotic Sports Car Show, which was founded in 1984 by RMR members Tom Scott and Stim Kennedy, is the largest gatherings of priceless and exotic sports, classic and exotic automobiles in Mountain States area. Over 450 treasured cars from early classics and collector cars to vintage race cars and current models will be on display. Many of these incredible cars come out only once a year for this show, to help the children of Ability Connection Colorado.

Nearly 100 local and regional car clubs, businesses and media sponsors draw more than 14,000 spectators to generate funds for ACC. Now in its

35th year, the show has become one of the grandest, most entertaining and most anticipated car shows in Colorado!

To date this spectacular event has raised over $2,000,000 for the ACC Creative Options Early Childhood Education Centers which specialize in providing early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services to expectant mothers and nearly 800 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families.

The Concours d’Elegance and Exotic Sports Car Show is also a excellent opportunity for corporate sponsors to experience tremendous exposure for their company. This prestigious show reaches a well educated and influential audience of car collectors and enthusiasts as well as the general public. The kids win and the corporate sponsors win. Contact Terri Armstrong at: [email protected] or by calling 303-691-9339 for more information.

The event is hosted by: The Rocky Mountain Region-Porsche Club of America / Alfa Club of the Rockies / Aston Martin Owners Club / Audi Club of North America-Rocky Mountain Chapter / Colorado Shelby Breakfast Club / Ferrari Club of America, Rocky Mountain Region / LeMay Museum/Club Auto / Looking Glass Corvette Association / Lotus Colorado / Man Cave Colorado / Maserati Club Rocky Mountain /Mercedes-Benz Club of America Mile-High Section /NSX Club of America-Southwest Region / Rocky Mountain 356 Porsche Club / Rocky Mountain Chapter-BMW Car Club of America / Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club / Rocky Mountain Saab Club of Colorado / Rocky Mountain Triumph Club / Rocky Mountain Shelby American Automobile Club / Shelby American Collection / and Z Car Club of Colorado.

There are four ways RMR members can support our fundraising:

1) Bring your special cars out to be judged or displayed. Click on the Registration tab on the home page of the ACC web site at: http://www.abilityconnectioncolorado.org/special-events/colorado-concours/.

2) Be a spectator. Bring the family out and enjoy the fabulous array of Porsches, Jaguars, Ferraris, Corvettes, Mercedes Benz, BMWs, Lotus, Maseratis, as well as a long list of other marques. Log on to the Concours website and will find a coupon offering a $1.00 discount on the $10.00 spectator entrance contribution.

3) Volunteer to help us on the day of the show. The exotic car clubs in Denver join together to host and manage this show so that all of the income can be provided to help the children. Click on the volunteer tab on the home page to sign up as a volunteer for helping with staging cars, help the judging and scoring, or work at the entrance gate.

4) Donate a little extra. An additional $10 donation on the registration form would bring in more than $750 extra from our club. Of course, even if you don’t register a car you can write a separate check to ACC, 801 Yosemite St., Denver, CO 80230.

I GET AROUNDDanielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

T H E L I F E O F FABULOUSLY RICH PORSCHEFILESDo you ever wonder what it would

be like to be fabulously rich? Not famous, necessarily. Just rich. Really rich.

Let me put it this way. Do you ever wonder just who the people are, who are on the pre-sold list when the latest hyper car gets announced? Have you noticed that each car is always already spoken for? Do you think there’s a list, right now, for the replacement for the 918, even though we peons can’t even verify that one’s in development?

Or, when you’re at the magazine section at Barnes & Noble, and you’ve finished perusing Top Gear and Car and Evo and Octane, and you’ve even finished glancing through Architectural Digest, do you ever pick up Show Boat or Yachting?

Who are these people? Who buys these things? Well, I know one thing. I know what they hop aboard, when they put out to sea.

I caught a glimpse once, in St. Tropez. Ever been there? In some ways, it’s more over the top than Monaco. The harbor’s smaller. And, in summer, the yachts are lined up, perpendicular to the seawall, chock a block, one against the other, as far as the eye can see. They’re all a minimum of 80+ feet long, up to I’d guess 150 or so, give or take, who’s counting. The really, really big boats (is it ok to use the word boat in this context?) stay outside the harbor. They can’t fit.

Once, and I swear this is true, I was walking along the quay at dusk, eating a genuine Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cone. Pfish Food. God only knows whether the French actually understand the name. Although the saleslady said business was good.

Anyway, I was strolling along, admiring the preparations that were going on - picture candelabras being set as centerpieces for the al fresco

dinners to come on the stern decks, I’m not kidding - and I could see, far off, a small crowd gathering around something.

As I got closer, I could see that the “something” was sitting just off the stern of what I guessed was a Sunseeker, at least 90 feet long, maybe more. And then I realized it was a car, a Ferrari, the latest mid-engine two-seat spyder.

I got up close, ice cream and all, and wormed my way to the front of the crowd. What did I see? A sign on the windshield, which said in French “To Jacques, happy birthday.” Bon anniversaire, indeed.

So I was ready, recently, when I came across an article on the Motor Authority site about the latest Porsche Design creation. The GTT 165, built by Dynamiq.

This isn’t the first yacht to emerge from Porsche Design. Oh no. Last year’s model was a 115-foot GTT. But, at 165 feet, it is the largest. The stats are fascinating.

It’s got a hydrofoil t-foil in the bow, and a hull vane in the stern, which reduce drag and provide “lift.” And that enables the craft to cross the Atlantic at 17 knots… through a pair of V-8 MTU marine engines, each producing 1,250 hp.

Oh, according to the article, there’s also a GTS version, which enables a speed of 25 knots, from a pair of V-16 engines, each generating 2,400 hp. Why am I not surprised?

Fuel? You ask about fuel? How about a capacity of 13,210 gallons?

Options? Out of curiosity, I went to the Dynamiq website. There I found, yes, it’s true, a “Build your own” configurator. You can choose a five- or six-cabin layout. Plus five smaller cabins for a crew of nine. An aft sundeck, pool and sunpads run around $60,000. An upper deck sky lounge will set you back around $400,000.

And, get this, while the standard

YachtEye system provides a TV signal that can be distributed throughout the yacht, the Oculus system provides real-time position, along with distance to destination, estimated arrival time, current speed and so forth… for about $22,000.

You want toys? How about a Castoldi 21-foot jet tender? In yacht colors. For $160,000. A Sea-Doo SPARK jetski, the most compact on the market, for $9,800. A Bowers and Wilkins high-end audio system for $53,000.

Don’t forget your crew. Nine sets of crew uniforms, by Loro Piano, for “evening and day service,” run $80,000.

Plus, the yacht will come to you. For $230,000 they will deliver the craft from Genoa to Ft. Lauderdale.

The basic cost of the vehicle? Ahh, if you have to as …. Ok, sorry. It starts at $30 million. The GTS version adds around $770,000.

There’s no word about reserving a slip in St. Tropez during the high summer season. But I’m sure someone can make room. It might help if you meet your craft in a matching color Porsche Turbo.

IN THE ZONERich Sanders

PCA Zone 9 Representative

HighGear 1958 - 2018 | Celebrating 60 Years |

FAIR SHARES?! One month ago, the Roadrunner Region served as host for Treffen Tamaya, in Bernalillo New Mexico. While not surprised at all, I was still blown away by the number of times I heard praise lavished on the region’s volunteer team. As I asked attendees how their weekend was going, the answers had less to do with the great weather, the location of the event or the great tour routes, than about the planning, the communications, the timing of events and the helpfulness of the local volunteer team. Caren Cooper, Tom Gorsuch, and Cindy Jacisin (National President, Vice President and Secretary of PCA respectively) made similar comments at a volunteer recognition gathering on the last day of Treffen. Every single volunteer from the Roadrunner region should be beaming with pride as a result of the extraordinary experience that you provided for PCA members representing 55 different regions across the U.S. and Canada. While this article length will not allow for a list of all volunteers, I should mention one in particular. As well as last year’s “Fiesta 50”, this year’s Treffen Tamaya was led locally by Harry Season. The reason for mentioning Harry, is that he did such a fine job with both events, that in February, the Executive Committee of PCA asked, and then tasked him to be the planning lead for all Treffens in the coming years. So, in addition to completing the execution of Treffen Tamaya, Harry was simultaneously

in t he proc e s s of t r ave l ing to undisclosed locations lining up the next couple of years of Treffen events. Congratulations, Harry. And for the rest of us, stay tuned for the next year’s Treffen surprises.

Also during the past month, I had the opportunity to join the Alpine Mountain Region as they hosted a “Mix it up” 2-day autocross and HPDE weekend at Pike’s Peak International Raceway. As was the case at Tamaya, the highlight of the weekend was the stellar organization of the volunteer club members. They dedicated their talents and clearly had fun doing it. The highlight for me was to check out the smiles on the faces of the first time HPDE drivers during their required 4-session “cha lk ta lk ” meetings, as they came off the track. Mark Stolberg continues to do a terrific job of making driver educational sessions, fun, interactive and upbeat.

Finally, just prior to writing this letter, I came off of a weekend in the Intermountain Region volunteering for the PCA Club Race at Utah Motorsports Park. As zone rep, I have some special duties during Club Racing weekends. In addition to supporting Pirelli’s sponsorship for the event (hanging signage and banners, photographing race winners and awarding winners with their Pirelli hats), the main job is to be there to pick up any organizational detail that’s about to fall through a crack. Well, again, owing to awesome organization by the IRPCA team of volunteers, there was little that I had to do.

In case you are not catching the common theme to all three of these happenings, it’s about volunteers. This past month, regions all around the zone featured big social events, tours, autocrosses, track days, and a PCA Club Race. In parallel to “live” events, all regions have continuing commitments to communications that include websites, newsletters and email blasts. As a member of PCA, if you find that you enjoy any or all of these types of activities or communications, I would ask you to ask yourself how you can help out in your region. No region is ever successfully run by a continuous set of long-term volunteers. Just like sports teams, having a number of players coming up through feeder leagues, and having extra people on the “bench” serves as a way to maintain the health of the organization. So if you find yourself enjoying PCA but not being involved as a volunteer, I would ask (actually beg) you to look at skills that you have, or may want to learn, and consider volunteering now. You can start small. You can control the level of commitment you want to make. But it won’t start until you step up. So PLEASE consider contacting anyone on your region board and expressing an interest in how you might help out. There’s a lot of quiet satisfaction that can come from volunteering. We’re an all-volunteer organization. Have you done your share recently???

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with ra l lies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA ra l ly is a competit ive event in

which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typica lly run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides

a sa fe, control led environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driv ing skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA Nat iona l) i s required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

R MR host s one c lub race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL

Membersh ip soc ia l s prov ide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually pre sented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typica l ly in the “of f months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which conte stant s endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
