ROOM TO BREATHE PROGRAM ROLLS OUT

ERADICATION PROGRAMFIGHTS INVASIVE SPECIES

Local jobs for Territorians living in remote Indigenous communities will be created with the first contracts awarded for Room to Breathe, part of the Territory Labor Government’s flagship remote housing program.

The West Arnhem communities of Maningrida and Warruwi will benefit from the housing program, with Bawinanga Aboriginal Cooperation awarded the tender for Maningrida.

The Minister for Housing and Community Development Gerry McCarthy said the Territory Labor Government has fulfilled another election commitment by awarding four Room to Breathe contracts to Indigenous businesses, to build additional living spaces onto existing houses to ease overcrowding, with work expected to start in the coming weeks.

“All Territorians are entitled to control over their life and access to high quality

services - when our remote communities and regions are strong, the Territory is strong,” Mr McCarthy said.

“We promised to restore trust in Government by creating jobs and empowering people in the bush, which is why this announcement is so important.”

Mr McCarthy said the first Room to Breathe work worth $2.7 million has been awarded to four Indigenous businesses which will create local jobs and employment opportunities and build local capacity.

“The NT has significant housing problems that have severely impacted many Territorians for too long, which is why we fast-tracked $10 million to start Room to Breathe before Budget 17,” he said.

“Building additional living spaces under Room to Breathe will improve liveability of remote housing – a good home is an important factor in a good education, good health and good community outcomes.”

Park Rangers will begin an African Big Headed Ant eradication program in Jabiru this month to stop the potential spread of the highly invasive ant in the region.

Having recently returned to Jabiru, the ants have the potential to spread into native bushland and to other communities in West Arnhem.

The species first arrived in Jabiru in 2001, and despite several control attempts, the ants are still present and pose a threat to Kakadu’s biodiversity.

As one of the world’s 100 worst invasive species, they drive out native ants and other native invertebrates, which then affect native plants, birds and reptiles.

The ants are not dangerous to humans however they can damage electrical wiring, get into your food, and cause a mess in the home.

Residents can assist Park Rangers by keeping an eye out for the species which are small, dark brown ants about 2–3mm long. About one in every 50 ants is a bit bigger (4-5mm) and has a very large head.

They are most likely to be found in pot plants, footpaths, gardens, and

along the edges of buildings – but they could also be found inside your home, and will spread into native bush if not controlled. Their nests usually look like a series of messy diggings in the soil.

Common in the Darwin area, they can spread through soil, pot plants or dirty vehicles.

Residents are reminded to avoid bringing pot plants in to Kakadu National Park, and to remove soil from dirty vehicles before coming in to the Park, especially from the Darwin region.

Kakadu National Park Invasive Species Program Manager Anthony Mann said he encourages anyone in the community to get involved in the program.

“Ants are the champions of our ecosystems – they aerate the soil, disperse seeds, recycle nutrients, and provide a food source for native birds, reptiles and other animals. So it’s really important to have healthy populations of native ants. African Big Headed Ants are bad news because they get rid of our native ants, and this could have flow on effects for our ecosystems,” he said.

“We’d really like everyone in the community to keep their eyes out for these ants. The more eyes we have looking out for them, the more chance we have of tracking them down and getting rid of them.”

“I encourage anyone from the community to get involved in this program, and search for African Big Headed Ants around your house and yard. Just place a teaspoon of tuna on your lawn and check it 5 minutes later.. and you’ll soon know if you’ve got these ants.”

If you think you’ve seen any signs of these ants, please contact Kakadu National Park immediately. If you’d like more information or are interested in helping out, please contact Parks on 8938 1100.

Rangers will be begin an eradication program to prevent the spread of African Big Headed Ants in the region.

A great variety of traditional foods and everything culinary-related will be featured at the inaugural ‘Taste of Kakadu’ event this month.

Described as an interactive food festival, A Taste of Kakadu is a 10-day event showcasing the World-Heritage listed Kakadu National Park as a place of abundance, bursting with fresh food.

Run by Parks Australia in collaboration with local tourism operators and Tourism NT, the calendar of events is jam-packed with 50 experiences across 10 days with something for the whole family.

Boutique dinners, campfire stories, bush tucker walks, cooking demonstrations, sunset tasting sessions, hunting and gathering talks with Traditional Owners are just a few of the activities scheduled.

A Kakadu National Park spokesperson said everyone is invited to come and cook, eat, learn and discover during A Taste of Kakadu.

“World-Heritage listed

Kakadu is a place of true abundance, bursting with fresh food.

“From its famous barramundi to local meats like magpie goose, to the world’s first-ever superfood, the Kakadu plum – there is something for everyone. We know this. Ours is a living cultural landscape. Today we continue to enjoy the flavours our ancestors did

50,000 years ago. And now we invite you to come and try them for yourself.”

A highlight of the festival will also be a traditional brunch with local Bininj woman, Mandy Muir, and Ngemba Indigenous chef, Sharon Windsor.

Indigenous celebrity chef Zach Green will also show visitors how to incorporate native Indigenous food into

everyday cuisine in a free workshop at the Mercure Crocodile Hotel.

There is also a kids mini master chef competition for the younger ones. The festival will take ancient traditions and give them a modern twist.

Visitors will learn to cook, eat and live off the land with the local Indigenous Bininj/Mungguy people and experience local flavours.

“We welcome you to our home – Kakadu – to experience flavours you’ll find nowhere else on Earth.”

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED IN HUMAN RIGHTS AWARDS

WARRuWI COMMuNItY CARE

Maningrida’s very own Noeletta McKenzie has been recognised for her incredible work in the community once again, after being announced as a finalist for a national award.

Noeletta is a finalist in the National Indigenous Human Rights Awards which is coinciding with the 25th Anniversary of Mabo & Native Title in 2017.

Nominated in the Eddie Mabo Social Justice Award category, the National Indigenous Human Rights Awards recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons who have made significant contribution to the advancement of human rights and social justice for their people.

Noeletta is a stand-out

community member in Maningrida and remains a strong leader of the GREATS Youth Service (GYS) which offers programs and support which engage youth and keep them of the streets.

GYS is the only organisation that is overseen and directed by the youth of the community and hosts all major and minor activities and programs that fully engage the community and hosted the annual L’urra Festival which attracted a crowd of 3500 people in the community.

With Noeletta’s work, GYS strives to produce strong young leaders in the community.

Noeletta was recently a finalist in the Northern Territory Young achiever Awards which aim to

encourage, reward and most importantly promote the positive achievements of young Territorians.

She was also awarded Person of the Year 2015 during the Top End NAIDOC Week.

The National Indigenous Human Rights Awards were established in 2014, and are presented by leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders, and leading Indigenous figures in Indigenous Social Justice and Human Rights. All recipients of the National Human Rights Award will be persons of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday, May 10 at Commonwealth Parliament of Australia in Canberra.

Young mothers in Warruwi had the opportunity to learn skills in cooking, budgeting and money management through a workshop held by HK Training and Consultancy. Supported by West Arnhem Regional Council, Creche and aged care, the young mums were able to not only learn some cooking skills but also learn a little bit about budgeting their money. This activity was very hands on with the young mums learning every aspect of cooking through to the budgeting.

The purpose of this activity was to see how far a budget of $60 could go shopping from the Warruwi shop.

This created a very fun way for them to learn all the new skills.

The activity provided community residents with some new ideas for cooking nutritious meals whilst saving money by increasing their knowledge through budgeting.

Congratulations to Warruwi Community Care Team Leader Annie Luta who was successful in passing her drivers licence. This was a very big step for Annie who showed a lot of courage.

Warruwi Aged Care clients will also benefit from Annie having her licence. Pictured is Annie picking up client Margaret Luta for social support and brought to Community Care Centre for morning tea.

Three Maningrida fishermen, Don Wilton, Stuart Yirawara and Jimmy Olsen, have set up a fishing business in the community.

The men catch and sell the fish locally, with the long-term plan to have sustainable family fishing enterprises based on homelands, which provide opportunities to live and work on their country.

Setting up the business around six months ago, the men fish off the beach three to four times a week using nets, and work with around five to six family members under the Community Development Program (CDP).

All three men hold Aboriginal Coastal

Fishing Licences. The men are supported

by Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) and have worked closely with Clem Bresson, Enterprise Development Manager for BAC in these early stages.

Currently, they hold a market night every Thursday where they sell around 70 kilograms of fish to Maningrida community members.

They have also supplied fish to the school, the aged care and private orders from Darwin that went on the Airnorth plane.

Interest to become fishermen in the community is spreading with 18 people attending the Certificate II in fishing operations on the first day.

NT Fisheries has also been providing training on a regular basis.

There is also a fourth licence holder who wants to set up a fishing base from his outstation in the future.

Nourlangie Safari Camp, here is 9SLK Is anybody listening? (My radio code) From the Diaries of Flemming Jensen 1968-1969

In the previous episode, Flemming indures the longest eleven hours of his life when he is lost in the wildlife sanctuary.

Saturday, 18 April 1969

I enjoyed as never before sleeping in my bed tonight. Free of mosquitoes and two blankets to keep me warm. I awoke however a few times during the night as my mosquito bites itched.

Luckily I was too tired to scratch too much and I soon fell asleep again. Allan did not turn up today but it did not really matter because I got the opportunity to rest another day.

This afternoon I loaded our two water drums. I had to row out where the water was clear so it could also be used for drinking water.

Afterwards I drove it up to the house. A little tricky but it’s necessary as long as the water pump is not working. Tonight, I again hear Bill Cosby’s LP two hundred miles and more. It is the funniest record I have ever heard.

Sunday, 19 April 1969

Have I gone crazy? Have I really been here for so long? I heard an engine noise and it was not from an airplane. However the girls who were about to get their rations also heard something.

We were listening. Suddenly they came out of the woods. It was three Land-Rovers with six men and Toby.

They had been on there way from Jim Jim that morning and had met Toby on the road.

I was completely surprised and a bit confused. They had come to pick up some spare parts from Allan’s old Land Rover and had really expected that he would be here.

I knew none of them but they seem to be all good friends with Allan. We had some enjoyable hours before they went back to Jim Jim.

Before they left they had given me a portion of their supplies of

canned food and bread which of course I was very grateful for.

Tomorrow they would return to Darwin and they promised to post my letters. Now it looks a lot better now that Toby is here. Now I can leave whether it is by road or by plane. However I hope that Allan and my planned trip to Alice Springs becomes a thing.

At least it has been a different and interesting day. By the way I forgot to say that Allan over the radio last night announced that his arrival was postponed until Tuesday.

Now we will see!

Monday, 20 April 1969

Toby and I went on a hunt and it was much easier now when the roads were passable. We spotted two buffaloes that we sneaked up.

I had Allan’s 44 Magnum. At an appropriate distance I shot, all together three times. It was hit twice in the lungs and once in the leg.

I approached it and shot it once in the head and it went down.

When I was really close it came up on its feet. It is astonishing how they can continue despite being severely wounded and again I shot and this time in the front of the head.

Again it went down and once again it attempted to get up but now I was so close that I could give it the decisive shot in the back of the head.

We drove the Nissan right up

to it and then stuffed the meat into it.

I got a good chance to see Toby using the knife. He was working very quickly and professional. It was obvious

that he had tried it many times before.

I enjoyed the trip home without having to carry the meat on my back. The old pensioner’s camp was now filled with fresh meat and we were very popular.

Later in the day I shaved my beard. I needed to see a new face.

The large temperature differences from day to night around 35-40 degrees in the day time down to about 5 degrees at night time has given me a cold.

Thursday’s night journey has of course also had its influence. Tomorrow will be the day for Allan to turn up, if he does not have other plans! We will have to wait and see.

In the next episode, Allan does not arrive again, which comes at no surprise to Flemming.

All local businesses and organisations are reminded of the road closure occurring on Saturday, 13 May for the Kakadu Triathlon.

This year a duathlon category (5km run / 15km bike / 2.5km run) is being added to the event for those wanting a more challenging course. The run course will be held on the triathlon race course, however the 15km bike ride will head out onto the Arnhem Highway towards the boundary of the Ranger Mine Lease.

As you all would understand and appreciate, the safety of each competitor is paramount to the Kakadu Triathlon Organising Committee and the success of the event. To ensure the safety of runners and cyclists, the following road closures have been put in place: Residential area – all streets in the residential area will be closed to road traffic between 6.30am and 9am and Arnhem Highway – corner of Jabiru Drive and Arnhem

Highway to the boundary of the Ranger Mine Lease will be closed to road traffic between 6.45am and 8am.

The Jabiru Police will be positioned on the corner of Leichardt Street and Civic Drive as well as the corner of Jabiru Drive and Arnhem Highway during road and highway closures.

The Committee are seeking your support for the event by informing your staff, contractors and suppliers travelling on the morning of the event to travel outside of the road closure times. However, if a member of your staff, contractor or supplier require access during the road closure times and cannot wait until the roads reopen they need to call 0477 702 379 on the morning of the event for assistance.

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics will be reflecting the road closure on the Road Report website.
