The CAST of WONDER Selecting actors for a movie may not be as easy as you think. As we read, each of us creates our own vision

of how a character looks, sounds, and acts. Much of that information is provided to us by the author, but even so, we create our own mental image based on other people we’ve known and on our past experiences. Inevitably, when we see the movie, our vision of some characters is not the same as that of the movie’s director. Compare each book character below with how he/she is portrayed in the movie. In what way is each one similar to what you imagined? How is each one different?

Who Would You Be?

1) If you had been cast as a character in the movie, which character would you want to

have been? 2) Explain why you would want to be that character. 3) How would your portrayal of that character be the same or different from what you saw

in the movie?

A movie enables us to see the characters (or at least the director’s idea of how the characters look), but it also provides us with additional features such as those listed below. Consider each feature listed on the chart and evaluate what it contributed to the story of Wonder. Did it change the message (theme) or the plot? If so, in what way was it changed? Did they help you understand or enjoy the book more or did they “muddy the water” for

you? For each feature listed below, EXPLAIN your opinion:

THEME Theme refers to the message that the author is demonstrating by writing the book. It is the message that he/she wishes the reader to come away with. It is likely a lesson that the main character learns or perhaps teaches us. The THEME is typically a large universal idea or message that looms behind the actual story. It is not actually the subject of the story, but what the story is showing us (perhaps something like “honesty is the best policy” or “value your friendships”, or "respect your elders").

HERE ARE SOME COMMON THEMES OFTEN FOUND IN LITERATURE: courage, acceptance, prejudice, honesty, compassion, kindness, cooperation, loyalty, family, perseverance,

humility, hope, friendship.

1) List two or three overall themes that you notice in the book, WONDER.

3) CITE THREE PIECES OF EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT THAT SHOW SUPPORT FOR THAT THEME:

As we look back at what happened in a story, we are mainly looking at the PLOT. The plot begins with setting the stage, or the EXPOSITION: what were things like before the real action began? Then comes the RISING ACTION which is the series of conflicts that lead to the turning point in the story. The turning point is called the CLIMAX. The events that happen after the climax and lead to the story's ending are referred to as the FALLING ACTION. What happens to tie together all the events at the end is called the RESOLUTION.

Your task in this activity is to describe the plot of Wonder (the MOVIE) by identifying each of the components of the plot. What were the main events in the movie? Starting from the bottom left box, list information about important events in the movie that create the plot. When you are satisfied with your work, transfer the appropriate information to the MOVIE PLOT DIAGRAM on the next page.

Weigh-In on a Real-Life Controversy Create an argument that supports your opinion.

Did you know that, while there has been a great deal of enthusiasm and support for the movie of WONDER, there has also been some controversy? The controversy is about the casting of one particular character: Auggie. It is not that some people thought Jacob Tremblay did not do a good job at acting his part. Most everyone thought he was GREAT! Instead, it has been argued by some that the director should have selected an actor who truly had a facial condition like Auggie’s instead of someone who had to be made-up each day to make him look like he had a facial condition.

Think about this controversy; it is likely not a simple issue for most of us. How do you feel about it? Do you think it would have been better to select a person who had a real facial difference play the part of Auggie? Do you think hiring a “common” looking person and creating artificial facial features was an insult to people with handicaps? Does it matter what the actor looks like in real life? Or, is it only important that he can do a good job acting?

Explain your position on this issue. Write your argument. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
