Otterbein’s hands on history lesson
WESTERVILLE, OHIO--Otterbein University communication students had a project that
required them to do a bit of research. The class assignment was to find a WWII veteran,
interview this person and write a profile on them.
Dan Steinberg, communications instructor in charge of the assignment stresses the
importance of learning these peoples story. “We will not have the opportunity to do this
assignment in a few years and I think it is so important for students to learn about their
history, it just makes it even better if it is first hand,” said Steinberg.
Students are reluctant to do the project at first Steinberg said but once the project gets
started their interest is spiked. Like any other project, students complain about it, until
they realize what a unique opportunity they have been given.
“I learned so much from this assignment and I enjoyed it the whole way through,” said
Liz Carr, a student in the class.

Otterbein Involvement

Members of the Otterbein community are giving great praise to the students and
instructor of the class, Steinberg. President of the University, Kathy Krendel thinks the
assignment is good for the students all the way around.
“Not only does it give the students an opportunity to learn firsthand from veterans it also
gets them out into the community learning new things and developing new skills,” said
Krendel.
There are 11 students and 11 veterans involved in the project. All of which bring very
unique stories to the table. The 11 veterans cover a wide range of perspectives on the war.
“None of our stories we have heard have been the same. It is so interesting to hear and
learn about,” said Cody Mast, student in the class.

Otterbein Assignment/WWII veteran
Q & A
Q. What class is this for?
A. The class is titled Public Relations Techniques (COMM 2500). It is an upper level
communications course that focuses on how to be successful in the world of PR.
Q. What exactly is the assignment?
A. Students were assigned to do research on the background of WWII and write questions
accordingly to ask a veteran. They then had to contact a veteran and meet up a time to meet with them and interview them. Once they have collected all of their information they were
required to write a profile on the veteran.
Q. Why should people care about this assignment?
A. It is a unique opportunity for students to learn firsthand from a veteran. It works on
multiple skills students need to have. This opportunity will not be available for much
longer so it is important that we take advantage of it now.
Q. Why does this assignment stand out above others?
A. This assignment sends the students out into the community forcing them to get involved
and make connections. It also has more elements to it rather than just the typical straight
forward paper.
