The history of the Comité International d’Esthétiques et de Cosmétologé is a study in resolve and purpose to raise standards, educate and network internationally and in so doing, to establish and maintain a hallmark of professional excellence for the beauty therapy industry across the globe.

From its humble beginnings as an exchange of ideas between Jacques Poirsons,

teacher of Esthetiques in Paris and Georges Dumont, a Belgium colleague, Comite International d’Esthetique et de Cosmetologie – CIDESCO was born way back in December 1946. CIDESCO has grown and developed into an international organisation that enjoys precedence as the dominant influence and authority in the international beauty therapy profession. It is a position which is hard-won, due to the inevitable ups and downs experienced by a global organization with a colourful 60 year history.

Today CIDESCO has a membership drawn from 34 countries spread across five continents. Its profile and reputation, together with the benefits of membership, ensure that there are always more countries waiting to join, once the stringent checks on membership have been carried out. Students from some 230 schools take examinations for the prestigious CIDESCO Diploma and the number of approved Beauty Centres continues to increase as the culture of wellness and beauty booms.

This success and continuity has been achieved through the enthusiasm and interest of industry stalwarts who have over the years given freely of their time as CIDESCO Board Members, along with those who have taken the time to organize the CIDESCO World Congresses & Exhibitions, run examinations and organize national CIDESCO sections. Not forgetting the CIDESCO International Examiners who are the mainstay for ensuring that standards are upheld. It is thanks to these individuals that CIDESCO has certainly made its mark.

Throughout my time as a CIDESCO member, I recall that the World Congresses & Exhibitions have often served as a much-needed “springboard” for budding cosmetic companies; many products were launched at these CIDESCO events - which at the time were quite unique in themselves. Many of these companies and individuals who lead them continue to appreciate the platform that CIDESCO provides, while sadly many others have forgotten the role played in their success by this unique association.

It goes without saying that we need to ensure that the CIDESCO legacy continues well into the future by encouraging industry practitioners to take a broader view of their livelihoods than just their daily work at hand. We all need to remain mindful of keeping abreast with the continuous, sophisticated technological advances as well as being aware of the latest spa disciplines and identifying new aesthetic trends as they develop.

As challenging as this might sometimes be, it is important to broaden our parameters, take an interest in the industry as a whole and participate in organizations and forums which are positioned to make a positive impact for clients and practitioners alike.

Many of us look back on the years of our involvement with CIDESCO and are amazed as to how it has filled our lives, embraced us, brought us friendships and made us all feel like an international family. No matter where we might find ourselves working in the world, it is CIDESCO that has undeniably opened doors for us and welcomed us into its network. We’ve all become united under one umbrella - a very comforting position to be in!

The dedicated commitment unselfishly invested by various CIDESCO players and personalities over the years is admirable. Their voluntary service, coupled with a passion for their profession is a legacy to uphold as CIDESCO spreads its wings, graduates and asserts itself as a prerequisite in an industry that has come of age and knows no boundaries.

It is an overwhelming honour and privilege to be President of this remarkable organisation as it celebrates its 60th Anniversary and to pay tribute to all those who contributed so unselfishly to make this possible over six decades by enhancing the image and education of the Beauty Therapy Profession world wide. Congratulations CIDESCO.
