From the Pastor…
The Family of God
Four of us from St. Augustine made a trip to Haiti in April. As a part of that trip we were able to
participate in the Haiti Connection Conference in Port-au-Prince, learning much about some of the NGOs
in Haiti that are working to support Haitians with medical care, children’s education, agricultural
education and support and other essential services.
We also traveled to Hinche for a four-day adventure. We went out to Thomassique and Terra Casse to
meet with the new partners of St. Augustine and St. John churches. We attended two church services on
Sunday for a total four and a half hours of worship! We were honored with an orchestral and choir
concert at St. Andre’s, Father Noe ’s congregation in Hinche.
There is no brief way to capture the effect on us. We were honored by the hospitality everywhere we
went. Music greeted us at every turn, voices joined in celebration. More than anything, though, was the
sense of God’s love connecting our hearts to the hearts of the people of Haiti wherever we went.
We are beginning a new thing by partnering with St. Luc. We are connected by our humanity, by our
common desires to better the lives of all, especially the children, and we are connected by the reality
that we are all children of the one family of God.
Pray for our new friends at St. Luc and for the whole town of Thomassique. Pray for us that we will be open
to God’s leading as we begin the adventure of this partnership.
God’s Peace,
Pastor Liz

forward in faith Capital Campaign Report
We are soon to reach the end of the first year of our forward in faith Campaign. Many of you have come to St. Augustine since this Capital Campaign was initiated and may not know what this forward in faith Campaign is about.
This Capital Campaign is for debt management. Our goal is to raise funds that will be used to pay down the principal of our $1.5 million loan for this St. Augustine Church building before the loan is amortized into a 20-year loan in early 2017. The funds will also be used to bridge the budget shortfall of our facility costs and our mortgage payments.
This goal may not sound too exciting. We will not see a new building spring up as we did in 2013. What we do see is God’s hand at work in our midst and the many ways in which we are able to partner with God in outreach to our community and beyond. With this Capital Campaign, we are also practicing good stewardship to ensure financial stability.
If you are not yet a partner in our forward in faith Capital Campaign, we invite you to join us. It is not too late. We ask you to pray, asking how God might work through you to join this Campaign. Listen to what God has in store for you and for our congregation.
Will you join us in making a commitment? Help us to reach our goal of $400,000 over the next two years.
Please contact Jack Dillon or Chris Deering for more information on how to make a commitment.
Jack can be reached at: [email protected]
Chris can be reached at: [email protected]
Town Hall Meeting
Our very first 30-minute Town Hall meeting will take place Sunday, May 1st immediately
after the 10 a.m. service. Grab a cup of coffee and join us in the sanctuary for this chance to hear a bit
about the history of St. Augustine, where we are now and where we are headed as a community of
people seeking God and following Jesus. There will be plenty of time for questions and sharing!

Overnight Shelter Program
Grocery Cart Ministry
You really do make a difference! Our food support for the St. James Food Pantry in Lincoln is really appreciated and the need is continuous. St. James is supporting a number of families who live nearby and they want to you to know they are thankful for our support!
Beans, rice, mac and cheese and canned vegeta-bles are needed. and soups are great. Help provide these food items for folks less fortunate. Salad dressings are always welcome.
Your donations are appreciated!
The Gathering Inn
Now that the weather is warming up, there is a need for summer weight clothes, socks, short sleeve shirts and adult jeans.
As always, toiletry items are needed. Please place your donations in the grocery cart at the entrance to Canterbury Hall. Thank you.
We will be hosting our Gathering Inn guests Wednesday, May 11th. Please come and help us prepare and serve the meal.
There are five or six different tasks (setting tables, preparing salad and bread, greeting the guests, serving, cleaning up, etc.) that need to be performed throughout the late afternoon and evening. Sign-up sheets are at the entrance to Canterbury Hall.
We host about 65 men, women and children by providing a substantial hot meal and overnight shelter for our brothers and sisters who are either permanently or temporarily homeless.
Our Rotating Shelter Team can really use your help in May. Several people will be traveling and unable to cook and prepare the rooms. Please consider signing up now.
The Meal Train Ministry is an online calendar that organizes delivery of meals for parish families in times of need.
Using this coordinated calendar will avoid duplications of menus and allow volunteers to choose a day that is convenient to deliver meals. Family food preferences and allergies are listed.
Barbara Woolman is in charge of the Meal Train Ministry. If you are interested in providing meals for parish families in times of need, please contact Barbara at:

Mission Outreach Celebration
Friday, April 29th at 6 p.m.
This fun evening will begin at 6 p.m., with social time and a silent auction. Dinner will be at 7 p.m., featuring a fantastic Italian meal (anti-pasta appetizer, homemade ravioli, salad, bread and desserts galore) followed by a program and raffle.
Visit each country/ministry table and get your passport stamped. Then you are eligible for our raffle items. Three live auction items will conclude the evening.
Invite your friends and neighbors. This is a great way to support our outreach programs. Tickets are on sale at the Welcome Center or call the Church office.
Social Issues
The next meeting of the Social Issues Book Group will be held at the church on Thursday, April 21st, at 1 p.m. The book, Take This Bread by Sara Miles, is rich with real-life Dickensian characters–church ladies, millionaires, schizophrenics, bishops, and thieves–all blown into Miles’s life by the relentless force of her newfound calling. Here, in this achingly beautiful, passionate book, is the living communion of Christ.
Our May meeting will be held on Thursday, May 19th, at 1 p.m. The book for May is The Distance Be-tween Us by Reyna Grande. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father.
All are welcome. For more information, contact Kathy Griffin at: [email protected].

Haiti Mission Trip ~ Reflections
This young girl was one of many children who greeted us at St. Luc. She is sitting in a small and
shabby, concrete building that serves as both the church and the new Episcopal school in
Thomassique. The chair she is sitting in is hand carved wood, made in the Haitian way. She was
dressed in a beautiful dress with clean white socks and ribbons in her hair. My heart was
already broken and there she was, breaking it just a little bit more. I look into her eyes and I dream for her…education, clean water, food. I
am praying that God will hold her face before
me each day as I pray for God’s leading in our
new partnership. How can I pray for her? What can I share of my resources that will bring hope
to her life? What will compassion and love look like as it moves from God to both me and to this
little girl? One thing is certain…our hearts are connected from this time forward.
Pastor Liz
The greatest gift for me on this trip to Haiti was
worshiping and sharing meals with my brothers
and sisters in Christ. I came to really see how in
my own life I do not rely on God because I have
so many things, so much stuff. I have the false
sense of being able to really take care of myself.
What I saw in my friends in Haiti was a genuine
need to be with God, to worship God and rely on
God. It is this spirit, the Holy Spirit working, and
it bubbles up and permeates throughout their
worship that is very powerful.
I am poor in spirit because I have so much.
Richard Rohr shared a Franciscan phrase which
is really appropriate and Father Noe also echoed
a similar sentiment: “There is enough to go
around and meet everyone's need but not
everyone's greed.”

Haiti Mission Trip ~ Reflections
Four members of St. Augustine parish (Pastor Liz, Jerry Harner, Jim Quinney and Rich Wampler) joined with a group from St. John’s Roseville on a mission trip to Haiti. The groups attended the Haiti Connection 2016 Conference in Port au Prince the first few days.
After the conference, they traveled to St. Luc, Thomassique and St. Jacques. Jerry reports that the group remained relatively healthy. Peanut butter, bananas, rice and beans and spaghetti were the staples for their meals. Yes, spaghetti for breakfast.
They attended a four-and-a-half hour Sunday Service at St. Saviour Parish. Passing the Peace was a 30 minute celebration. Gifts to the altar included a live goat, chickens, fruits and vegetables.
The group was also present for the Bishop Tharp Business & Technical Institute for the Ninth graduating class and 10th Anniversary of the opening of the school. The school has had 900 graduates in either the two or four year degree programs. Seventy per cent are women and fifty per cent are now employed. In Haiti, that is dra-matic success. The graduates are working locally and did not have to go to Port au Prince for jobs.
Our visit to St. Luc Mission School showed us the great challenges and opportunities for our service to this school. It is a very poor community. We will have to take our time and listen to their desires. We see a need for sanitation, water, food and uniforms for students. However, we want to build on what they perceive as their assets. Spring Tea Party
More than seventy ladies gathered on Saturday, April 16th to launch the first St. Augustine Ladies Spring Tea. Nearly $1500 was raised with ticket sales and raffle prizes to begin a Women's Ministry fund. These funds will be used throughout the year for women's retreat costs, speaker fees, materials and scholarships. Guests were welcomed by Lana Gartin and enjoyed a glass of champagne or sparkling cider. The sanctuary was transformed into a gorgeous tea room with live harp music in the background.
Each table was uniquely styled by several hostesses, including Susan Lampton, Aubrey Miller, Dottie Neil, Ginny Dearing, Kathy Dillon, Beth Sulc (for Rhonda Wampler), Kathy Griffin, Janice Stenzel and Reese Allen. Ladies enjoyed a sampling of five tea varieties, and shared tea trivia. Hostesses brought out platters loaded with scrumptious finger sandwiches artfully prepared by caterer, Julie Shank.
A fashion show featuring the clothing from The Gathering Inn Style shop was coordinated and moderated by Dottie Neil. Models displaying budget friendly fashions included June Meredith, Susan Lampton, Beth Sulc, Sue Hunnell and Kathy Griffin. Proceeds from the sale of the clothing goes to benefit The Gathering Inn homeless program in Placer County.
The ladies enjoyed dessert platters featuring lemon tarts, scones and a delightful chocolate dipped tea bag shaped cookie artfully prepared by Julie. Ginny Dearing gathered many of the raffle items from local merchants.
Event coordinator, Joan Howe, said she was thrilled with the response to the tea party and was grateful to the team of hostesses and supporters who made it all possible.

The junior/senior high FISH Youth Group meets at 6 p.m. on Sunday evenings. The group gathers for dinner and social time. They then move into the lesson and end the meeting with worship, no later than 8 p.m. Guests are always welcome.
The FISH Group will meet each Sunday through May 22nd, with the exception of May 9th, Mother’s Day. The group will have an end-of-the year party.
FISH takes the summer off for the most part. They are working on a retreat for August.
If you are interested in providing dinner for the group, usually around 10 folks, please contact Carole Geiger at: [email protected] or Melissa Lovin at [email protected]. Jim Quinney and Gaby Sisk are the leaders.
Sunday School is continuing to do very well. Everyone is loving the curriculum. The children really seem to be learning more than just the Bible stories. They all know how many days there are in Lent - ask and see if they remember! We are now learning about the Easter season and what that means.
On May 22nd, we will be recognizing our youth who are "moving up" or graduating. If your child is moving up to middle school or graduating from high school or college, please let Melissa Lovin know ASAP.
If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Lovin at:

Nursery Ministry
We have made a few changes in the nursery. Over the coming months, we
will have some new decor and some new toys! We want our nursery to be
inviting and a place where kids want to come each week for a short period
of time! The nursery is open to children four years old and younger. We are asking parents if they want
to be contacted for bathroom needs and if it is ok to serve a snack to the children. Parents will also
sign-in their child. We have also posted our rules for the nursery and our discipline policy. They are
posted next to the door by the television. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Melissa
Lovin at: [email protected], Children's Ministry Coordinator, or Shelby Larkey, Nursery
Attendant.
We would love to have one or two more people interested in rotating through as an assistant to Shelby.
If you are interested in this ministry, please see Melissa Lovin. We currently have two teens from our
FISH Youth Group who help her out each week.

Community Meal-Packing Event
This year’s event, (held in early March), was a joint effort with St. Augustine and St. John’s Roseville. It was a huge success. The combined total of meals packed was 28,316. A total of $1,400 was collected (including a $3,000 grant from the Mission Outreach Team).
The meals from our event were shipped in a container totaling 283,176 meals from the Bay Area warehouse
and received by our in-country partner, Salesian Missions in Cambodia. Included with the meals were 39 boxes of girls’ dresses, boys’ shorts and reusable sanitary napkins donated by Little Dresses of Africa.

Kairos 17
I am giving thanks to God for showing us his
amazing love and grace contrasted in an
environment held a part for some of the most
despised people on earth. I am grateful to God
for using us to bring 38 men closer to Christ. We
understand and share with the inmates that the
inside and support teams appreciate their
gratitude but that gratitude should go to Christ
our Lord. We are tools for use in our master’s
hands.
With that, I am thanking God for the Jack Dillon
tool, our advising leader (my wing-man), who
kept me on task, but in the spirit of Christ’s love.
Thanks for the Rob Shonk tool for leading much
of the music for our team meetings and the
Richard Shumway tool for lovingly fulfilling his
role as a table family member.
And thanksgiving for all the agape God provides
from our St. Augustine family in the form of
financial support, cookies, hands, and posters.
The Kairos 17 team received a huge affirmation
of the master’s work by the assistant warden and
prison captain who said this ministry is showing
awesome results and transformation in the yard.
He has allowed pictures of our gym/sanctuary
(no inmates). We will share them soon along
with some of the closing open mic testimonies
from the inmates.
Thank you so much for your support.
God’s peace,
Steve Mershon

need.
Approximately two to three hours of standing are
involved. All food is provided and no cooking
experience is needed.
This team is in need of more volunteers. Please

DOK
The St. Augustine Chapter of Daughters of the King usually meets on the second Sunday of each month after the 10 a.m. service. However, the Daughters will meet May 4th at 1 p.m. to put Mother’s Day gift bags together for Acres of Hope women. This gathering replaces the regular May meeting.
At the April 10th meeting, Greer Nave led a spiritual study of our new National Handbook and By-Laws. The group discussed what it means to be a Christian and how faith started in members’ lives.
If you are interested in becoming a Daughter or would like more information, please contact Deidre Shonk, Chapter president at:
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Are you looking for a new way to make a difference in someone’s life, a “pay it forward” act of kindness if you will? Or perhaps you would like to learn a new skill and enjoy the company and fellowship of a group of women.
Have you considered joining those of us who knit and crochet prayer shawls? These shawls are given to people who need to feel the love of God and the support of our congregation as they struggle with illness or life’s challenges.
We meet the second Monday of each month in Canterbury Hall at 1:30 p.m. There is always an open chair for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry.
We have several shawls in inventory. If you would like to give one to someone who is not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer Nave. They are presented with a beautiful card and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. For shawls given outside the congregation, a donation by the giver to replenish our yarn supply is appreciated, but not required.
For more information, please contact Greer Nave at:
The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the second Saturday morning of the month. Coffee and breakfast are served. All men and youth are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. Rob Shonk is the Director. If you have an interest in learning about the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, please contact Rob at:
The Brothers will continue their book discussion on Living Reconciliation by Phil Groves and Angharad Parry Jones at the May meeting. They will read two chapters each month. A study guide will assist them in their discussions.
Brother John Quigley represented the St. Augustine Chapter at the National Brotherhood
Council April meeting in Mesa, AZ in April. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry was the
keynote speaker.
The Brotherhood fund-raising BBQ will be held Sunday, June 26th after the Church service.

MOTHER EARTH
April and May are joyous times for the earth in northern California! Spring is here after the dark days of winter! It brings to mind the famous canticles of Saint Francis of Assisi as he erupts in joy. “Praised be my Lord for our sister, mother earth, . . .which sustains and keeps us And brings forth diverse fruits with grass and flowers bright.” In his famous canticles he speaks of the elements in familial terms: Brother Sun, Brother Wind and Brother Fire. He extols Sisters Water, Moon and Stars. An ode to St. Francis will be released this summer when Pope Francis issues his Encyclical. It addresses our environment and cries out for help from mankind in healing Mother Earth. As we rejoice in spring remember, what a blessing we have in this earth and strive to care for everything it holds. We need a devout feeling of stewardship and gratitude for her and the abundance of Sister Rain given this past winter! Enjoy and give thanks, dear friends, Carole Peterson
People gain so much hope when they know they
are not experiencing something alone. Sister Joyce Rupp O.S.M.
