This Supplement describes the procedure for using the COMFORT-MATIC electronically controlled manual gearbox on the Fiat Ducato.

For the correct use of the gearbox, it is essential to read this Supplement in full to find out at the outset which operations are correct and permissible.

READY TO START

MANUAL MODE

IMPORTANT For correct use of the sys-tem, it is advisable to use your right footonly to operate the pedal.

❒ Press the brake pedal.

❒ Start the engine.

❒ Push the gear lever towards + (shift up)fig. 1 to engage first gear (if startingfrom N or R simply move the lever tothe central position) or R fig. 2 to en-gage reverse.

❒ Release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

❒ When driving, push the gear lever to-wards (+) fig. 1 to engage a higher gearor towards (–) fig. 1 to engage a low-er gear.

COMFORT-MATICGEARBOX

Your vehicle is equipped with an elec-tronically controlled manual gearboxknown as the “COMFORT-MATIC” thatis able to operate in two modes: MAN-UAL and AUTO.

The gearbox consists of a conventionalmanual transmission equipped with a leverA-fig. 1, to which has been added an elec-tronically-controlled hydraulic device thatcontrols the clutch and gear shifts auto-matically.

AUTOMATIC MODE

IMPORTANT For correct use of the sys-tem, it is advisable to use your right footonly to operate the pedal.

❒ Press the brake pedal.

❒ Start the engine.

❒ Push the gear lever to A/M fig. 3, toengage automatic mode + (higher gear)fig. 1 to engage the first gear, if start-ing from N or R move the lever to cen-tral position R fig. 2 to engage reverse.

❒ Release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

OPERATING MODE

The gearbox can operate in two operat-ing modes:

❒ the first is manual (MANUAL), wherethe driver decides directly when to shiftgear;

❒ the second fully automatic (AUTO),where the system decides when to shiftgear. This mode allows you to use theUP function (steep road function),which allows you to shift gears at high-er speeds to allow you to drive up verysteep roads easily with any load. To en-gage this function, press the UP but-ton - fig. 4 between the controls on thedashboard. Select the gear and the op-erating mode MANUAL or AUTO)by operating the control lever at anyspeed.

CONTROL LEVER

Control lever A-fig. 1, on the centraltunnel is a floating multistable lever, i.e. itcan take up three stable positions andthree unstable positions.

The three stable positions correspond toneutral N-fig. 2, reverse R-fig. 2 and thecentral position between the unstable po-sitions (–) and (+) fig. 1.

The unstable positions, i.e. positions leftby the lever as soon as it is released, areupshift request (+), downshift request (–)and automatic mode request (A/M)fig. 3.

The system is returned to manual modeby returning the lever to A/M position.

With the vehicle at a standstill and the keyout, the lever may be moved with/withoutthe brake pedal pressed. The system doesnot carry out any action after the lever hasbeen shifted and remains in the gearstored before the key was removed.

IMPORTANT With the engine running, abuzzer sounds to indicate errors betweenthe lever position and the gear effectivelyengaged until the inconsistency is resolved.

MANUAL OPERATION(MANUAL)

In this operating mode, the driver is re-sponsible for choosing the best gear ra-tio to engage, depending on vehicle ser-vice conditions.

Proceed as follows to shift gear:

❒ shift the lever to (+) position fig. 1 toengage a higher gear;

or

❒ shift the lever to (–) position fig. 1 toengage a lower gear.

The accelerator pedal need not be re-leased during the gear change.

The system will not allow the gear changeif the gear shift request could impair cor-rect operation of the engine and gearbox.

In this case, the system will notify the dri-ver that it is not possible to change gearby displaying a dedicated message on thereconfigurable multifunction display (see“Warning lights and messages” paragraph),accompanied by a buzzer.

The system will shift down through thegears automatically when the engine isidling (e.g. during deceleration).

Avoid keeping your hand onthe lever when you are not re-questing a gear shift or anAuto/Manual mode change.

AUTOMATIC OPERATION(AUTO)

to engage/release automatic mode (AU-TO) press the lever to A/M position fig.3; activation is indicated by the messageAUTO fig. 5 and the gear engaged ap-pearing on the reconfigurable multifunc-tion display.

Avoid keeping your hand onthe lever when you are not re-questing a gear shift or anAuto/Manual mode change.

Automatic operation (AUTO with UP function engaged)

The UP can only be activated with auto-matic mode engaged.

The UP function is turned on by press-ing the UP button fig. 4 located betweenthe controls in the dashboard. After thisfunction is activated the (green) warninglight 0 in the instrument panel comeson together with a confirmation messagein the reconfigurable multifunction display(see next paragraph).

With the UP active, the system will selectthe most appropriate gear on the basis ofvehicle speed, engine rpm and pressure onthe accelerator pedal, with the aim ofovercoming steep gradients in the easiest,most comfortable manner.

Where necessary (e.g. overtaking), thesystem will react to the accelerator be-ing pressed to the floor by shifting downthrough one or more gears in order to de-liver the power and torque required togive the vehicle the acceleration requiredby the driver (all this takes place in auto-matic mode, irrespective of whether theUP function is on or off).

In AUTO mode, the system will shiftgears on the basis of vehicle speed, enginerpm and the pressure applied to the ac-celerator pedal. A gear shift may be re-quested by operating the gear lever, butwithout necessarily disengaging this mode:this function, known as ‘gear suggestion’,suspends automatic mode for the time re-quired to select the ratio requested by thedriver.

INFORMATION ON DISPLAY

When the ignition key is turned to MAR,after one second, the reconfigurable mul-tifunction display shows the gear engagedand the last mode used (AUTO orMANUAL):

N = neutral;

1 = first gear;

2 = second gear;

3 = third gear;

4 = fourth gear;

5 = fifth gear;

6 = sixth gear;

R = reverse.

When the UP function is activated the(green) warning light 0 in the instru-ment panel comes on together with a con-firmation message in the reconfigurablemultifunction display.

IMPORTANT If the display does not showthe gear engaged after 10 seconds with theignition key on MAR, turn the ignition toSTOP, wait for the display to turn off andthen repeat the manoeuvre. If the prob-lem persists, contact the Fiat Dealer-ship.

ENGINE STARTING

The system permits engine start-up witha gear engaged and also with the gearboxin neutral (N); the brake pedal must al-ways be pressed with the gear engaged.

It is advisable to place the gear lever inneutral (N) before starting the engine.

After start-up:

❒ the gearbox automatically engages neu-tral (N)

❒ the lever remains in the same positionas the last time the engine was turnedoff

❒ the reconfigurable multifunction displayshows the message (N) and an acousticsignal indicates any inconsistency be-tween lever position and the gear en-gaged

❒ the gears that may be engaged are 1st,2nd or reverse (R), with the brake ped-al pressed.

IMPORTANT If start-up is requested withthe gearbox is a position other than N andwithout the brake pedal pressed, the re-configurable multifunction display shows adedicated message see “Warning lightsand messages”). In this case, repeat thestart-up manoeuvre, pressing the brakepedal.

IMPORTANT If start-up is requested withthe gearbox faulty, run the “Delayed start-up” procedure (see also associated mes-sages): hold the key on AVV position forat least 7 seconds with the brake depressedand the engine will start. The system willremain in recovery mode (maximum speedpermitted: 3rd, Auto mode not available).If the engine does not start, contact a Fiatdealership.

IMPORTANT When the driver’s door isopened, the system activates the auto-matic part to prepare it for subsequent en-gine start-up.

If the engine does not startwith the gear engaged, a po-tentially hazardous situationbecause the gearbox has au-

tomatically shifted to neutral is indi-cated by a buzzer.

DRIVING OFF IN THE VEHICLE

Driving off in the vehicle, take-off, is per-mitted in 1st gear, 2nd gear (recommend-ed on road surfaces with poor grip) andreverse (R).

To engage 1st gear

❒ press the brake pedal;

❒ with the lever in (N) or (R) shift thelever to central position;

❒ with the lever already in central posi-tion, move the lever toward + (highergear) fig. 1;

❒ release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

To engage 2nd gear


❒ with the lever in (N) or (R) fig. 2move the lever to central position andthen towards + (higher gear) fig. 1;

❒ with the lever already in central posi-tion, move the lever twice toward +(higher gear) fig. 1;


To engage reverse (R)


IMPORTANT If the vehicle is moving, therequest is accepted and carried out if thevehicle speed is less than 3 km/h within 1.5seconds of the request: if the request isnot implemented, the system will maintainthe gear engaged or if vehicle speed dropsbelow 10 km/h it will put the gearbox inneutral (N) and the manoeuvre must thenbe repeated.

❒ Shift the lever to (R) fig. 2;


BUZZER WARNINGS

For safety reasons, a buzzer warningsounds when the vehicle is parked withthe gearbox in neutral (N) (the warningsounds when the ignition key is turned toSTOP).

With the vehicle at a standstill, engine run-ning and (1), (2) or (R) gear engaged, thesystem turns on the buzzer and automat-ically shifts the gearbox to neutral (N)when:

❒ the accelerator and/or brake pedals arenot operated for at least 3 minutes;

❒ the brake pedal is pressed for longerthan 10 minutes;

❒ the driver’s door is opened and the ac-celerator and brake are not operatedfor at least 1.5 seconds;

❒ a fault has been detected in the gear-box.

PARKING THE VEHICLE

To park safely, it is essential to engage 1st

gear or reverse (R) gear with your footon the brake pedal. If parking on a slope,operate the brake pedal. It is also essen-tial to wait until the gear engaged disap-pears from the reconfigurable multifunc-tion display before releasing the brakepedal.

IMPORTANT NEVER leave your vehiclewith the gearbox in neutral (N).

GENERAL WARNINGS

❒ With the vehicle at a standstill and agear engaged, keep the brake pedalpressed until you decide to set off.Then release the brake and accelerategradually;

❒ when parked for long periods with theengine running, it is advisable to keepthe gearbox in (N);

❒ to safeguard clutch efficiency, do notuse the accelerator to keep the vehi-cle at a standstill (e.g.: parking on a hill);the clutch could be damaged by over-heating. Use the brake pedal insteadand operate the accelerator only whenyou are ready to set off;

❒ use second gear only when you needmore control of take-off during ma-noeuvres on surfaces with low grip;

❒ if, with reverse (R) engaged, you needto engage first speed or vice versa, on-ly change gear when the vehicle hascome to a stop and the brake pedal ispressed;;

❒ although very inadvisable, if the vehi-cle is unexpectedly allowed to rolldownhill with the gearbox in neutral(N) the system will automatically en-gage the gear best suited to vehiclespeed when a gear shift is requested toallow drive to be correctly transmittedto the wheels;

❒ If necessary, with the engine off, it is pos-sible to engage 1st, R or N with the keyin MAR position and the brake pressed.In this case, gear shifts must be made al-lowing at least 5 minutes to elapse be-tween one gear shift and the next tosafeguard the operation of the hydraulicsystem and the pump in particular;

❒ during hill st arts, accelerate graduallybut fully immediately after releasing thehandbrake or brake pedal to allow theengine to increase its rpm to a greaterextent and overcome higher gradientswith more torque.

WARNING LIGHTSAND MESSAGES

REDUCE GEAR CHANGES

The message appears on the display to in-dicate that the driver is using the gearboxincorrectly.

Incorrect use (by the driver) could auto-matically activate a procedure for pro-tecting the system.

MANUAL MODE NOTAVAILABLE

The message appears on the reconfig-urable multifunction display when it is notpossible to select MANUAL mode withthe engine running.

“COMFORT-MATIC”GEARBOX FAULT (red)

When the ignition key isturned to MAR, the warning

light turns on and should go off after a fewseconds.

The warning light on the dial comes on ei-ther steady or blinking (together with amessage on the reconfigurable multifunc-tion display and a buzzer) to indicate thatthe gearbox is faulty.

If a fault is present, contacta Fiat Dealership as soon aspossible to check the sys-tem.

Contact a Fiat Dealership ifthe message remains on thedisplay.

Contact a Fiat Dealership ifthe message remains on thereconfigurable multifunctiondisplay.

AUTOMATIC MODE NOT AVAILABLE

The message appears on the reconfig-urable multifunction display when it is notpossible to select AUTO mode with theengine running.

CLUTCH OVERHEATING

The message appears on the reconfig-urable multifunction display together witha buzzer when the clutch overheats.

In this situation, limit take-off and gearshifts or if necessary park (turning off theengine) until conditions are optimum.

PRESS BRAKE PEDAL -DELAYED START-UP

The reconfigurable multifunction displayshows these messages alternately and insequence together with an warning buzzerwhen the system does not recognise thebrake pedal to be operational during astarting attempt.

In this situation, keep the key on AVV forat least 7 seconds with the brake pressed:the engine start. The system will be in re-covery mode (maximum speed permitted:3rd).

IMPORTANT Messages are displayed on-ly if start-up takes place in a gear otherthan neutral (N).


If the message still appears onthe reconfigurable multifunc-tion display, contact a FiatDealership.

To safeguard clutch efficien-cy, do not use the acceleratorto keep the vehicle at a stand-still (e.g.: parking on a hill);

the clutch could be damaged by over-heating. Use the brake pedal insteadand operate the accelerator only whenyou are ready to set off;

GEAR NOT AVAILABLE

This message appears on the reconfig-urable multifunction display together witha warning buzzer in the following cases:

❒ when it is not possible to change geardue to a fault in the system;

or

❒ when, due a fault in the system, is is on-ly possible to engage 1st (1), 2nd (2), 3rd

(3) or reverse (R).

MANOEUVRE NOT PERMITTED

The message appears on the reconfig-urable multifunction display together witha warning buzzer when the system will notaccept a gear change via the control leverbecause certain conditions required foracceptance of the gear change are missing.

PRESS BRAKE PEDAL AND REPEAT MANOEUVRE

The message appears on the reconfig-urable multifunction display accompanied,in some cases, by a warning buzzer forsafety reasons if you attempt to changegear with the vehicle parked without pre-viously pressing the brake pedal.

PLACE GEAR LEVER IN N (neutral)

This message appears on the reconfig-urable multifunction display together witha warning buzzer when the system asksthe driver to perform the manoeuvre.

When the gearbox is shifted to (N) themessage on the display should go off.

TOWING THE VEHICLE

Ensure the gearbox is in neutral (N) (bychecking that the vehicle moves whenpushed) and tow in the same way as a nor-mal vehicle with a manual gearbox (see in-structions in Owner Handbook).

If it is not possible to put the gearbox inneutral, do not tow the vehicle and con-tact a Fiat Dealership.

IF A FUSE BLOWS

The COMFORT-MATIC system components are protected by specific fuses.Contact a Fiat Dealership if a fuse needs replacing.

CHECKING FLUID LEVELS

COMFORT-MATIC GEARBOX HYDRAULIC OPERATING SYSTEM FLUID

To check the gear oil and check/replace the hydraulic clutch operating system fluid, contact only a Fiat dealership.

AIR CLEANER

Have the air cleaner replaced by a Fiat Dealership.

Used gear oil contains substances that are hazardous for the environment. It is ad-visable to have oil changed by a Fiat Dealership where used oil will be disposed of

according to the law.
