INTRODUCTION

A group of seven students of 4th ESO and 1st BACH and two teachers from IES Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente (Burgos) travelled to Zonguldak (Turkey) on October 23rd to 29th.

The aim of the trip was the Comenius Project: we worked on a sports center on Eregli, the name was “Viva la vida”.

We prepared the plan of the gym, the different activities, the slogan and the logo.

The name of our school in Alapli was “Alapli Anadolu licesi”

3. THE TRIP AND THE EARTHQUAKE

Alper and Onurcan went with a van to pick us up at the airport. We had to change the euros into turkish liras. We got 2,5 turkish liras for each euro.

The minnimun salary in Turkey is 700 turkish liras, that is about 280 euros. The prices there were like: a sandwich was 2TL, taking the trolley was also 2TL, a bottle of water was 0.5TL, a dinner in a turkish restaurant, between 8 and 15 TL.

Alapli was at 4 hours of Istanbul, 180 km. Most of our partners lived in Eregli, a village near Alapli.

Page 12: Comenius project turkey

The same day we were travelling, the 23rd of October, a terrible earthquake destroyed the east part of Turkey, a city call Van.

It was very far than us, but all the people worried about us.

It was one of the worst ever in Turkey. More than a thousand of people had died and many people still disapeared.

It had a magnitude of 7.6 degrees in the Ritcher scale.

ATATÜRK Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (19

May 1881–10 November 1938) was an Ottoman and Turkish army officer, revolutionary statesman, writer, and the first President of Turkey. He is credited with being the founder of the Republic of Turkey.

Atatürk was a military officer during World War I. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, he led the Turkish national movement in the Turkish War of Independence.

Having established a provisional government in Ankara, he defeated the forces sent by the Allies. His military campaigns gained Turkey independence.

Page 16: Comenius project turkey

Atatürk then embarked upon a program of political, economic, and cultural reforms, seeking to transform the former Ottoman Empire into a modern, westernized and secular nation-state.

The principles of Atatürk's reforms, upon which modern Turkey was established, are referred to as Kemalism.

THE BLUE MOSQUE Istanbul's imperial Mosque of Sultan

Ahmet I (Sultan Ahmet Camii) is called the Blue Mosque because of its interior tiles, mostly on the upper level and difficult to see unless you're right up there with them.

The mosque (built 1603-17) is quthe masterwork of Ottoman architect Sedefkâr Mehmet Ağa

We entered into it but we have to wait because they were praying and onle the people that go to pray can enter into it.

Into the Blue Mosque..

Page 37: Comenius project turkey

When we finished to visit the Blue Mosque, we went to Hagia Sophia museum, that was near it.

The facade of the museum was not so expectacular than the other, but the inside was amazing, with Arabic pannels(the muslims have to speak with their God in Arab, because it’s his language) and beautiful paintings.

We went out and we walked by the streets near the mosques.

Page 38: Comenius project turkey

HAGIA SOPHIA After the Blue Mosk we go to Hagia Sophia. Hagia Sophia, is a former Orthodox

patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its dedication in 360 until 1453, it served as the Greek Patriarchal cathedral of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople of the Western Crusader established Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931, when it was secularized. It was opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.
