our and a half years ago, when I arrived to serve as your Senior Pastor, I wrote an article for the Ecclesia about “Christian conferencing,” the pastor’s

office, and particularly my office’s desk. Let me share a portion from what I wrote back then:

I inherited one especially stunning piece of furniture to use in the office – an antique desk. But this is no ordinary desk. This is a “partner desk.” The desktop is large, fit for two people to work. Each end has space for a chair. I sit on one end, and the other end remains empty. To me, this is the perfect desk for a pastor. Why? Because church work is a collaborative effort. The desk’s form and function remind us of the shared nature of Christian ministry. We rely on each other to do the work God has for us. Ministry is a partnership, a mutual endeavor for the glory of God.

Come visit. I’m saving a space for you.

I meant it then, and I mean it even more now! I care very deeply about First United Methodist Church, its people and its mission. I am totally committed to leading and serving, so that we can all take those next steps in faithfulness together. And I am eager to continue our ministry partnership.

Please know that I always want to meet with you – to listen to your story, celebrate your joys, hear your hopes, and take seriously your concerns. I continue to schedule in-home visits with people who filled out the “Meet with Pastor Mark” cards on my first Sunday! I thought only a dozen cards would trickle into the office; instead, I have a stack about three inches thick. But of course, you can find me in the church office during regular office hours Monday through Thursday, unless I am away visiting someone else or at a meeting off-site. Schedule a visit or drop by when you can.

What will we talk about when we meet together? That’s up to you. My sincere hope is that we talk about how the Spirit of God is at work within your life, inspiring you for holy living. Let’s talk about discipleship! After all, our church’s mission is “to make and nurture Christian disciples through the presence and power of God.”

Over the years, you have heard me share a vision for how to live this mission… namely, for each person to name how they are engaged in the church’s life through five dimensions of discipleship. When we can name it, then we can celebrate it, and we have a joyful story to tell! When we are all lovingly participating together, God brings extraordinary blessings.

On the next page, you’ll find a “Discipleship Diary,” a tool to help you name and celebrate your involvement at First UMC. If we believe together that faithful discipleship is important, then take a few moments here. Write down how and where you are participating. You might be surprised at what you write down. In the coming months, each Ecclesia will feature a “Discipleship Diary” portion, to help you track and celebrate what God is doing in your life.

May God continue to bless you and keep you,

Grace and peace,Pastor Mark

anuary brings a new opportunity to join a Covenant Group! These groups are organized around the question, ‘How is

it with your soul?’ These groups will ‘watch over one another with love’ (John Wesley’s phrase), ‘grow in grace’ together, and together become deeper disciples. These Covenant Groups will be a means of grace to you, and will become an anchor in your life. They do not displace Sunday Schools or other study and fellowship opportunities, but are a place to form deep, abiding, stable relationships in the midst of a demanding and chaotic world.

Sign up at fumcsalisbury.org, contact Pastor Stacey ([email protected]), or fill out a blue form in the narthex. Group meetings will begin mid-January, and continue through April.

What do Covenant Groups look like?• Covenant groups are typically 5-7 persons, to allow for

authentic relationships and time for each person to share• Typically, these meet for one hour per week • Covenant groups are guided by a covenant, which each

group will consider. These include things like: o Confidentiality: what happens in the group stays

with your group… this is a place of trusto Attend regularlyo We will pray for one anothero We will be accountable to one anothero The central goal of our group is ‘soul-tending’- to

answer ‘How is it (Really) with my soul?’o Together, we will be in mission together by: _________

• New groups will form each September and January. o Some groups will inevitably need to change because

schedules change, the group has grown and needs to split, or needs to change makeup; Some groups will form for the first time

• Some groups may meet in homes, others at church, others may meet at a community location

• Groups may include people from outside our congregation• The church can assist groups needing childcare

How do I become part of a Covenant Group?• Fill out a sign-up form on the church website• Contact Pastor Stacey

• Respond to an invitation from an identified Covenant Group leader; contact Pastor Stacey about becoming a Covenant Group leader

OR• Sign up for one of these study + covenant group

opportunities on Wednesday nights:

J

Join the Disciple Fast Track Group as they begin study of the 13 New Testament letters traditionally attributed to Paul. You do not need to have completed the prophets study. They resume January 9. Chat with Pastor Stacey or Jeff Matthews

Covenant Bible Study picks back up in January on Wednesday nights as well! The theme of covenant through scripture grounds the study. Chat with Pastor Stacey or Bob Johnsen.

isten for “Epiphany Moments” during our Sunday worship services, starting now in

January and lasting through the end of February. During each “Epiphany Moment,” a church member will share a brief testimony about one of our church’s ministries. As we listen together, we will see God’s light shine!

DO I LOVE MY CHURCH? (By Sara Banish a member since 2000.)

ABSOLUTELYThere are many reasons for my strong, positive response:

• Being in this space gives me the feeling of being home, feeling loved, feeling cared for and safe.

• Church friends and staff feed my soul with comfort and support. The shared love of Jesus Christ bonds us together.

• Many opportunities, to step out of myself and to serve others, are available. Working as a team with fellow church members s an honor and a privilege.

• There are many possibilities for learning more about discipleship, Methodism, and the Bible. My faith has certainly been strengthened by participating in some of these offerings.

YES – I love my church. It brings me joy. I am here to stay.

MISSION MOMENT

ach month on the second Thursday evening and following Friday Morning First United Methodist

Church serves dinner and breakfast to the clients at Rowan Helping Ministries. The meals are usually financed, prepared, and served by our Adult Sunday school classes and choir. On three occasions the food is prepared by volunteers led by Taffy Jordan and financed by church donations. This ministry usually cooks 70 to 90 meals.

You can share in this mission project in several ways. If you are a member of a Sunday school or group listed below then volunteer to help during your assigned month. If you are not part of a regular class and want to help then contact Taffy Jordan (336-467-0793 or [email protected]) to volunteer. If you are unable to volunteer you can still make a financial donation to the church and earmark it for “Rowan Helping Ministry Meals.”

E It is a wonderful thing during Thanksgiving and Christmas to reach out and help the less fortunate members of our community. However, they need our help throughout the year. Serving them a nutritious hot meal once a month is one way we can make a difference in our community over the next 12 months.

FUMC COLLEGE KIDSHi! My name is Jennifer Kribbs and I am a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill. I am a proud member of the Carolina

For The Kids Foundation, an organization that benefits the children and families of UNC Children’s Hospital.

What do I do?I am a Hospital & Family Relations committee member. Our committee concentrates on expanding and solidifying the relationships with UNC Children’s, the patients and families of the hospital, and the organization. We are involved in building relations with families, doctors, nurses, and hospital administration, as well as plan ways for committee members to engage with patients and families through the Pediatric Playroom, Parent’s Night Out, and other events.

How will my donation benefit the patients and families of UNC Children’s? Carolina For The Kids created a unique fund called the For The Kids Fund in 1998. This fund provides for expenses not covered by insurance or Medicaid that families may not otherwise be able to afford along with their child’s hospital bills. These may help provide for monthly bills, parking passes, meals, gas cards and other necessities that families are struggling to pay.

E $15 = One night stay at the Ronald McDonald House$25 = One week supply of diapers for a newborn$50 = Gas card for one trip from Wilmington, NC to UNC Children’s

If you would like to donate...Please consider donating towards my fundraising goal! Last year, I raised over $500, so this year I am hoping to beat that! My goal is to raise at least $600. This organization truly changes the lives of these children and families, so please consider helping me attain this goal!

The easiest way is to donate online. If you would like to donate, please visit my fundraising page online:https://uncdm.funraise.org/fundraiser/jennifer-kribbs

If you would like to donate by mail instead, please send it to the location below and please include “Jennifer Kribbs” in the memo line:

Carolina For The KidsPO Box 628, Chapel Hill, NC 27514-0628

Thank you very much for the love and support!Jennifer Kribbs, UNC Class of 2021

“FUMC provides so many types of outreach to our community. There is plenty of opportunity for personal involvement, but financial support is the backbone to

keeping these important ministries in place. As Jesus said, ‘I am the vine, you are the branches (John 15:5).’”

SALISBURY YOUTH

Where Might God Be Sending You?Intergenerational Summer Mission Trip - Miami 2019As cold as winter can be, summer is not as far away as it may seem. The time to prepare

for our summer mission trip is now! This year we will be traveling to Miami, Florida to

engage in cross cultural missions. Our partner organization again this year is Praying

Pelican Missions (the same organization that coordinated the wonderful trip last

summer to Cuba!)

Miami is a wonderfully diverse place filled with many churches who are bringing the Good News of Christ to their

community. As a missions team, we will be going to support a church already rooted in Miami. We will be the extra

support, the hands and feet, they need to further the vision God has laid out for the people of their city.

As an intergenerational trip, I want to encourage youth (14+) as well as adults who sense that God might be inviting them

to be the hands of Jesus in Salisbury and beyond to join our adventure!

The mission field is right here in our community, and it is also farther away where there are new friends to meet and

churches different from our own to lift up. The call of discipleship is multi-faceted, and cannot be narrowed down to one

city or another. God is at work throughout the world. This is your invitation to join God at work in Miami, summer 2019.

Trip Dates: June 22-29

Information Sessions: January 6, 9:45am and January 27, 9:45am

Information sessions will be held upstairs in the Education building, room C210

While you can wait for the information sessions, you can also sign up any time! Contact Jenni ([email protected]

Middle School Edu-Mission TripNew in 2019 we are experimenting with how we hope to engage our youth in missions.

Throughout the school year, our students are active in serving the Salisbury community.

In the months of June and July we like to take advantage of the freedom summer break

allows.

In years past we have had summer mission weeks that revolved around projects in

Salisbury. In 2019, we want to expand the concept of community by traveling on a four-day trip to Wilmington, NC.

We will be going to the coast for an educational, and hands-on trip to discover more about how God is working

around Wilmington. This short mission experience is ideally suited for middle school students to get a taste of what

a short term mission trip is like. It’s also perfect for people who can’t take a whole week off of work, or are otherwise

prevented in going on a weeklong trip to Miami but still want to be involved in summer missions.

The mission field is where we can come alongside God at work. It is far away. And it is also near. God is already active

in our city, our state, our country, and throughout the world. Through this experience we have the chance to lift up

our neighbors on the coast, and be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Students currently in 6th grade or above are invited to join the trip on their own or with a family member! Rising 6th

graders will need a parent to attend with them. And while this trip is not specifically intergenerational, any adult who

likes teenagers and loves God can contact Jenni to apply for the team.

Trip Dates: July 10-13, 2019

Information Session: January 13, 9:45am

Information session will be held upstairs in the Education building, room C210

While you can wait for the information session, you can also sign up any time! Contact Jenni (jenni@fumcsalisbury.

Youth BandIn the fall of 2018 a small group of students and adults began meeting in the youth lounge after dinners on Wednesday

nights. This team of six began playing music together, and after a few weeks they had learned a couple of songs and

began bonding as a team.

Mid-way through the semester they emerged for the first time as the Youth Band! Our youth band led the group in

singing worship songs at a Sunday night Gathering; and in early December we played Christmas music, leading a sing

along after dinner at Midweek@First!

Currently our youth band is comprised of students Jude Smeltzer (piano), Ryan Prather (trombone), and Nicholas

Foote (technology); as well as adults Kevin Lundy, Corrie Fogt, and Jenni Fogt. I could not be prouder of the group

who has made the youth band possible. With the addition of a band to some of our Gatherings, we are realizing a

dream I have held for our ministry since my arrival two and a half years ago. I look forward to the possibility of adding

some students as vocalists, and perhaps someone on percussion! For many people, music can be a powerful and

deep connection with God. The addition of live worship music for our youth Gatherings is a thrilling next step for our

church’s student ministry.

FUMC AFTER-SCHOOL CAREecember has been a very busy month! We colored and sent cards to shut-ins and played “Tricky Santa,”

a gift exchange game. We made ornaments for the tree and now each child has a keepsake they can hang on their tree for years to come. We read fun Christmas books and meaningful ones about the true reason for the season. Our year is going well and we look forward to 2019 to learn, play and grow together.

Scouting for Food is a service project to care for people in our local communities who are hungry and in need. In partnership with Rowan Helping Ministries, on Scout Sunday, February 3, 2019, Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA will be collecting canned foods at both the 8:30 and 11:00 am services at First United Methodist Church. Collected goods will be delivered to Rowan Helping Ministries for distribution to families in need through their Crisis Assistance Network. A Scout promises “to help other people at all times.” There is no better way to show our Scouting Spirit than by participating in the annual Scouting for Food drive! Now is the time to show our community the Scouting values of being loyal, helpful, kind and cheerful. Scouts will help make a difference to fight hunger. Scouting for Food is the leading service program for Boy Scouts of America and is a part of the national BSA program - Good Turn for America.

appy New Year from the FUMC Child Development Center!! A great beginning to the new school year

with our children finishing their unit of study on “What do we know about Clothes?” The children also worked in math groups creating different patterns using a variety of math items. We are also thankful for all our blessings starting the new year as we continue to learn through Bible stories and Bible songs! We continue to enjoy chapel with Pastor Mark in the beautiful new chapel! We also had a guest speaker come and read to our center from the volunteer program, Give the Gift of Reading, through Smart Start Rowan! The children enjoyed this time!

Now accepting registration for Enrollment 2019 for First United Methodist Child Development Center! Full time care, Monday-Friday 6:30am- 6:00pm serving ages 3-5 years of age. For more information please contact Carey Swanner at [email protected] 704-636-3121 ext110.

NEW SECURITY MEASURES FOR WEDNESDAYS ur church will take steps to improve security for

“Midweek@First” on Wednesdays. Please note the

following changes:

• The doors will remain locked, so that we can ensure

security for the church facility and for all children.

We also will not “prop open” doors.

• We need GREETERS to stand at two designated

entrances to let people into the building for

“Midweek@First” dinners and programs. The

two entrances are: 1) on South Church Street,

to the right of the Sanctuary, and 2) the back

alleyway, under the awning. Can you volunteer as

a GREETER on Wednesdays? If so, please contact

Pastor Stacey Lundy.

Why are we taking these steps? The church’s Safe

Sanctuary Policy and procedures are intended to protect

our children, youth, workers, employees, volunteers and

the entire church body of First United Methodist Church

of Salisbury. Everyone is expected to follow at all times

the Safe Sanctuary Policy. The new policy was approved

by the Church Council on May 22, 2018. You can find this

on the church’s website (go to www.fumcsalisbury.org,

click “HOME,” then click “Policies and Forms” to find the

document).

As Dr. Sarah Hensley, Chair of the Board for After-School

Child Care, Summer Day Camp, and Child Development

Center, recently noted, “Consistency in securing our

facility has to be a priority for the church.” For this reason

the Board is requesting that steps be taken to secure the

facility for all children. Keep in mind our programs operate

until 6:00 pm on Wednesdays, therefore we need to keep

doors locked to make sure that the building remains secure.

Two other items need mentioning regarding improved

security on Wednesdays. First, the Trustees are working

intently on improving lighting around the church facility’s

exterior. Second, some church members are interested in a

fellow church friend walking with them to or from their car.

Can you volunteer in this way? If so, again please contact

Pastor Stacey Lundy.

O

SAFETY FIRST→ Please make sure that the doors shut tight behind you.→ Be aware of your surroundings when leaving the

THANK YOU!ear FUMC Church Family, Thank you for all of your support after the passing of Tim’s mother,

Kerry Bradshaw. These words alone do not seem enough to express our sincere gratitude. Pastor Mark was with our family from the very beginning and officiated a beautiful service and tribute to Kerry. Matthew immediately reached out to support, working with a special soloist who was a member of our family. The church staff worked together to prepare the church and materials for the service. Dedicated and caring church members prepared food for a reception and served as ushers greeting our friends and family. We feel so blessed by God for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. It all started with you, my church, and we are so appreciative.

Love, Tim, Nancy and Leah Wyrick
