COME HOME TO FAMILY

What’s Inside the

Issue?

(Continued on page 4)

February in the world is considered the month for Love, the world celebrates Valentine’s Day, cards and candies are given to the special someone in your life. This is part of what people look forward to in this month. As Christian we also have something to look forward to, we have been chosen by the God of Love, and placed in his family. So often our identity is wrapped up in who we love and how we are treated. Many people spend a lifetime trying to gain recognition and a sense of belonging. Because we are Christians our identity is found only in Jesus Christ. Searching for it in another person or things will bring disappointment, insecurity, frustration and anxiety. Jesus said in order to save your life, you must be willing to lose it unto Him (Luke 9:24). You cannot experience

the freedom and purity of your identity in Christ if you are still longing to be identified with the things of this world. In reminding the early church of their identity, Peter told them, yes it was true, they were aliens, strangers to this world. (1 Peter 2:11-12) Yet they had been chosen by God to know and experience all the wonder and goodness of His glory and grace. Therefore, their identity was secure in Christ. Have you settled the need for identity in your life? If so rest in the power of His embrace. If not Settle the need for identity choose Jesus as your savior and your identity will be secure. Your identity will be good for eternity. This Month instead of a card or candy share the love of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

Lesson 5: Spiritual Fellowship

Goal:

To learn what true community is and to practice biblical Koinonia.

Objective:

To experience spiritual fellowship, based on biblical principles, with others who share a common life in Jesus Christ.

Scripture:

“You must warn each other every day, while it is still ‘today,’ so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.” (Hebrews 3:13 NLT)

This month’s lesson will emphasize the biblical practice of Koinonia through spiritual fellowship with people who share a common life in Jesus Christ. Spiritual fellowship is a mutual commitment to one another that sustains and strengthens our faith. A prerequisite of this mutual benefit is a close fellowship with Christ and the knowledge of His Word. For the true Christian, this fellowship begins

with a personal communion with the Father made possible by the mediation of His Son Jesus Christ.

When we as a community of believers truly apply the principles of Koinonia, this compels us to grow in spiritual fellowship with one another. Spiritual fellowship involves mutual spiritual stimulation which is distinct from regular social activity within the body of Christ. It may come from reading or studying the Bible, memorization of scriptures, and sharing applications of biblical principles with one another. It helps to hear what God is saying to us through another believer. Spiritual fellowship means that we “watch out” for and help one another in that we become committed and assume responsibility to encourage, admonish, and pray for one another.

As we seek to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ, we must experience spiritual growth with others through the knowledge and the application of the Word of God for vital nourishment, so that our spiritual journey is pleasing to God. Paul commended the believers at Rome because they were full of goodness, complete

in knowledge and competent to instruct one another. They engaged in spiritual fellowship, mutually building up and caring for one another. (Romans 15:14)

“That which we have seen and heard we declare to you that you may have fellowship with us and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.” (1John1:3)

Sharing Biblical Truth

Sharing biblical truth starts with the revelation of the scripture. Recording important truths from your daily Bible readings is a great way to grow. Two people may share with one another or this can take place within a small group setting. We must pray that the Holy Spirit will illuminate our minds to the understanding of His written Word, so that we may freely and accurately share what we have learned. Also we must be careful to listen to what other Christians have to say, for God often speaks to us through other believers.

“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” (Proverbs 27:17)

Doing Family God’s Way

itself to find its way. Many have brought forth ideas about the family. These ideas all fall short of the intention of the original design.

The family did not just happen to be, it was purposely designed. The designer of the family is God. If you really want something to work at its best, you must return to the original specifications. The Lord holds the patent on the family. The psalmist declares in Psalm 127 that any attempt to establish family without God brings nothing but vanity. It is awe-inspiring to me that the God who created this world would make Himself available to each and every family. God desires to place every part of the family in its right place. The Lord wants to be the personal tutor of every husband, wife, son and daughter, teaching each how to fulfil their sanctified role. The Lord wants to walk with each father and mother training them to discover the unique bent of their children. This God led discovery will enable parents to guide correctly their child to living a fulfilled life. God wants more for family than the rat-race experience that has caged the family. It is the Lord’s intention that the family enjoys life, not just struggle to make a living.

“Doing Family God’s Way” is to recognize the calming fact that God wants to watch over your family. “Doing Family God’s Way” puts the Lord in charge of security. “Doing Family God’s Way” keeps you from feeling that you are in this all by yourself. The Lord secures the

family certainly by His presence, but also by the principles of His Word. We must do more than pray for the manifestation of the Lord’s presence in our families; we must yield to the teachings of the Word of God in our families. We must seek to discover what is God’s Word concerning the family. We must not only discover what God has said, but we must do what He has said. We must yield to the wonderful transforming power of the Word of God. We must take seriously the responsibility to lead our whole household to salvation. Our families, our schools, our communities, our churches, our world, all would be better, if we found ourselves “Doing Family God’s Way.”

Community Resource Fair

‘RESTORING THE VILLAGE’ – THE SEQUEL

Building on last year’s success, Family Spirituality Weekend 2014 breaks out some new tools as it again emphasizes ‘Doing Family

God’s Way’It’s heavy lifting raising young

people these days. With its annual

Family Spirituality Weekend set for

Feb. 21-23, Tabernacle Missionary

Baptist Church is sending out a

reassuring message: You don’t

have to do the “heavy lifting” alone.

As in past generations, the

church – through its programs,

networks, collective shoulders

to lean on, and resources to tap

into – can be a muscle-bound ally

for single mothers, grandparents

raising grandchildren, and virtually

all other family combinations in the

proverbial village.

“This year’s theme is ‘Restoring

the Village – the Church and Family

in Partnership,’ and I think the

theme seeks to help us rediscover

the importance and great benefi t

of the church and family working

together in the areas of spiritual

development for the family and

biblical insights for rearing children,“

said Tabernacle Pastor Nathan

Johnson. “The theme highlights

the church and family joining

together to help families realize their

God-given hopes and dreams. The

church’s original design was – and

it still is – an enlargement of the

family.”

According to Deaconess

Deborah Harley, Family Spirituality

Weekend 2014 will unveil Tab’s

newest, streamlined efforts to help

folks – plus showcase just what the

church is doing to get the word out

about help that’s available.

“This year, we are connecting

with families who have children

and looking at what the hopes of

parents and children are,” said

Deaconess Harley, a longtime

educator and administrator with

the Detroit Public Schools and

former principal of Renaissance

High School. “We want to

fi nd out how the church can

partner with them. You always

hear about how children are

lost. As an educator, I have

seen the demise of families

and of children. I have seen

the detachment and ravages of

children who sometimes seem

to be raising themselves. Well,

we want to get a handle on

how we can help in this day and

time.”

Meanwhile, those

working on this year’s version

of Family Spirituality Weekend

say they are not fl ying blindly

into the fray. For the fi rst time,

Tab workers sent out a survey to

families essentially asking what

outreach and other services

they might fi nd benefi cial. It also

asked what format for delivering

services fi ts best with children’s

schedules and other front-line

family realities.

The surveys turned up useful

data, organizers say. For

example, most families with

children at Tab have children

between the ages of fi ve and

12. Also, survey respondents said they defi nitely want to

learn more about how to structure Bible study at home. Many

revealed they believe a good time for family activities at church

is after church on Sundays.

The message set to play like a drumbeat during Family

Spirituality Weekend – and throughout the year – is that the

church can be a critical companion in the child-rearing mission.

“We are going to communicate to those families with

children that they are not alone,” emphasized Deaconess

Harley. “There are many people in this church ready and willing

to assist you in many ways.”

Believe it or not: Our children are watching…and listening

An important chunk of the battle is making sure youths are

simply there – in church services, at special youth programs,

or on special outings. Even when it appears that young people

at church are not completely tuned in, the “rain” of spiritual

messages, positive images, and encouraging examples

nonetheless falls on them… and can bear awesome fruit,

according to Deaconess Harley.

“When our children are in church, even sometimes when

they seem to be trying not to hear the message or see the signs

from God, it nonetheless often gives them a conscience,” said

Deaconess Harley. ”And our young people are tuning in and

paying attention a lot more than we realize. They just look like

they are not hearing. I remember when my son was growing

up in the church, I might be looking at him and telling him to

wake up and pay attention. And then when we’d get in the

car, he could tell me everything the minister had said.”

“Also, I remember I was made to go to church when I was

growing up. I swore that when I got older I would not go to

church and be so involved. But when I got older, something

started gnawing at me. The lessons that seemed like they

weren’t sinking in actually were. So young people hear more

than we think, and that’s why it’s so important for them to be

there in church, at church events, and interacting with church

people.”

Rev. Dennis Kitchen is heavily involved in Tab’s youth

offensive. He is immersed in the Men and Boys ministry and

leads Bible study sessions with youths and young

adults. According to Rev. Kitchen, Family Spirituality

Weekend 2014 represents a critical springboard for

Tabernacle.

“A number of programs are in the works, including

crafting an after-school program that will get more

involved with helping young people do much better in

their studies,” said Rev. Kitchen. “One goal is to help

reduce the dropout rate in the community. “

Community interest in tapping into Tab programs

that provide guidance and enriching experiences for

young people is overwhelming, said Rev. Kitchen.

Last summer, the church provided scholarships for

several youths to go to the Boys’ Retreat.

“When we reach out to families and provide some

guidance and help, we are pretty much bombarded,”

said Rev. Kitchen. “Especially single mothers with

sons are interested in making sure their sons are

exposed to programs that help them learn how to be

men. That’s why Family Spirituality Weekend is critical.

It really allows families to get closer together; it binds

families closer together and lets them know they are

part of a larger family. And when we work with young

people, you can actually see growth in them.”

Pastor Johnson urged Tab members and others to

attend and gain critical insights from workshops and

guest speakers.

“I would say that this year’s workshops serve to

remind families that they are not alone in accomplishing

that which God has designed families for,” Pastor

Johnson explained. “They are designed to give families

skills and inspiration to do family God’s way. That’s

why I encourage families to come and be exposed to

the resources available as the church and family work

together.”
