The “Laying On of Hands” is perhaps the most solemn moment of the Rite of Confirmation. The Bishop, and

all the priests standing near him, extend their hands over the candidates. The Bishop invokes the Father in the

blessing, above, asking that Holy Spirit come upon and fill the hearts of the baptized.

Through the words and actions of Bishop Perry, this past Friday, 59 of our parish youth were strengthened

and sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. The St. Barnabas faith

community rejoices with the newly confirmed and their families!

The last words of Jesus to his disciples in the Gospel of Matthew contain a promise: “…And behold, I am

with you always, until the end of the age.” (Mt. 28: 20) In Confirmation, and in all the sacraments, Christ’s

promise to his disciples – Christ’s promise to us – is fulfilled. Let us rejoice and be glad!

Matt Furjanic

Director of Religious Education

P.S. The candidates wrote beautiful letters to Bishop Perry expressing their love of God and desire for

Confirmation. The letters are on display in the Narthex. If you have a moment after Mass, you may want to

read some of them.

All-powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

by water and the Holy Spirit

you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life.

Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and Guide.

Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the spirit of right judgment and courage,

the spirit of knowledge and reverence.

Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen!

BOOK DRIVE Mercy Sister Carol Mucha, former St. Barnabas principal, is conducting a used book sale at Saint

Xavier University. Proceeds help students who cannot afford to go on retreats or do service trips to

various places in the U.S. She counts heavily on the generosity of others who want to dispose of

books of all genres, even CD's, DVD's, videos, magazines, and small electronics, including cell

phones (they do not have to work). If you want to help, just bring the items over to McDonough

Chapel, 3700 West 103rd Street, between 9am and 4pm. If help is needed to unload, we can do

that. For more information, call Sister Carol at 708-297-4232.

Gratefully, Sister Carol.

“100 DAYS OF PRAYER” All are invited to join in prayer for the first one hundred days for the new president and his administration. Pray for

wisdom for our president and his administration. We are inviting all to pray the Prayer of St. Francis for a peaceful

transition of leadership. We call to mind the inspiring words of Pope Francis to the members of Congress on Septem-

ber 25, 2016: “You are called to defend and preserve the dignity of your fellow citizens in the tireless and demand-

ing pursuit of the common good, for this is the chief aim of all politics.” May we be a source of grace for our country

and the world as we unite in prayer each day.

PRAYER of SAINT FRANCIS

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it

is in pardoning that we are pardoned it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

LENTSMALLGROUPSFORMINGNOW!

Companions on the Journey is a small group format program. As Chris ans, we are part of a community of believers who need others to support us along the way. Several families have graciously agreed to host a small group in their home once a week for the six weeks of Lent. We invite you to join a small group. Make a commitment to set aside just 90 minutes each week to grow in faith and in rela onship with your small group, our parish family.

Small groups are being formed based on the informa on you provide. This means you can request a group based on shared experiences/lifestyle. You can also create your own group or choose a group based on your availability or me preferences.

It is our hope that all of our parish family, the many different genera ons and the rich diversity of our parish, will come together to par cipate. We hope you will use this Lent to assess your rela onship with God, to realign your priori es, to make more room for God, and to go forth to do good works from your experience!

St. Barnabas Grade Spotlight

LET’S TALK ABOUT COMMUNITY!! Our 4th and 5th grades worked so hard on their Community Projects during break and a little after.

Fifth-graders worked on 2-D project boards and had a chance to show their artistic sides. I am so proud of how hard

the students worked to create their unique poster boards. Not only did they pick places in their community to include

on their boards, but they also learned to write simple Spanish sentences describing where they would go in their com-

munity.

Both 4th and 5th grades touched on basic Spanish grammar such as pronouns, verbs, and sentence order.

On a side note, both grades started using the Spanish Online program in school. They will be doing this every last

Spanish class on the month. They will be able to keep exploring Middlebury Interactive Languages Program in school

and at home. Keep up the great work!

Hasta Luego,

Ms. Sanchez

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

On Monday, as a part of our Catholic Schools Week service lesson, St. Barnabas participated in a school-wide service

project to thank members of the community who help serve us. The junior high students made care packages for nurses,

fire fighters and police officers. The preschool class made posters to place on the recycling cans outside to thank our

garbage collectors. The kindergarten-2nd grade classes made classroom books on ways they can serve the community

and 3rd-5th-graders made posters thanking police and firefighters for lending a hand, decorated with their individual

hand prints.
