What is combustion reaction?
A combustion
reaction is when
oxygen combines
with another
compound to form
water and carbon
dioxide. These
reactions are
exothermic,
meaning they
produce heat.

What is the fire triangle?
Fire triangle is a
simple model for
understanding the
ingredients
necessary for most
fires.

What is activation energy?
Activation
energy is the
minimum energy
required to start
a chemical
reaction.

Why is heat/energy a necessary part of the fire triangle?
Without heat, a
fire cannot
begin, and it also
cannot continue.

How is the cook top of your stove (not electric) a real-life of a fire triangle?
The cook top of
your stove needs
air, fuel, and heat
in order to make
a fire.

What is combustion engine?
External combustion engine is a heat engine where an (internal) working fluid is heated by combustion of an external source, through the engine wall or a heat exchanger. The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion of a fuel (generally, fossil fuel) occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber.

(in general) How is combustion engine work?
With an internal
combustion engine,
fuel is burned inside
the engine in what is
known as a combustion
chamber. The
combustion chamber is
an enclosed space
where the gasoline
goes. Once the gas of
the confined gasoline
expands, it produces
energy.

In term of combustion, how are NASCAR engines different from street car engines that allow them to operate at
much higher speed?
They are based on a
340 cubic inch V-8
engine design that
was produced in the
1960s. The actual
engine blocks and
heads are not made
from the original
tooling, they are
custom made race
engine blocks, but
they do have some
things in common
with the original
engines.

How does nitrous oxide help engines perform better?
When you heat nitrous
oxide to about 570
degrees F (~300 C), it
splits into oxygen and
nitrogen. So the
injection of nitrous
oxide into an engine
means that more
oxygen is available
during combustion.
Because you have
more oxygen, you can
also inject more fuel,
allowing the same
engine to produce
more power.

One documented example of cheating in NASCAR in which something was done illegally to increased the
combustion performance of the engine.
The news of Michael Waltrip cheating in
NASCAR. The officials found illegal
additives had been mixed in the fuel of his car All the crews try to do something
with the car to increase its
performance and are involved in some
degree of cheating and they know that
the maximum penalty is a fine and lose of points so they just try and go that extra mile hoping
that they don’t get caught.
