Do you play card games in your classroom? I am always shocked at how many of my students have not even seen a deck of cards or played card games such as Uno and Go Fish! For those students who have played Uno before the rules for this game are very similar with one slight change. All cards are the same color. The goal of this game is to match LIKE TERMS, not colors.

1) I have my kids play in groups of 3-4 students. After the dealer gives 6 cards to each player, he flips over the top card.

2) If the next person has a like term to match it, he lays it down. If he does not have a like term, he can either use a reverse (switches direction of play), skip (skips the next person's turn), or wild (chooses a new term). If he does not have or does not want to play one of those cards, he draws from the deck.

3) Play continues until a player is out of cards.

**For students practice combining the terms, have them say out loud what the like term would become before putting their card down. For example, if there was a -4x on top and I was playing a 7x, I would say "3x".

I also use these cards with my students that need the physical, hands-on cards to understand how to sort and group like terms (minus the flair cards of course). It is so helpful for kinesthetic learners to have something to physically group together.

Keep a set of these UNO cards in your math center rotation for students to practice this skill throughout the year!

{durability & storage}I recommend printing on cardstock and laminating for card durability. To store these cards, put a rubber band around each group and throw them in a card box. I use empty baby wipe boxes and Pringles cans to sort my math center games. Write on the container with a permanent marker what is inside for quick reference!
