EDITORIAL NOTE Hi SMU,

SMU Students’ Association (SMUSA) finally celebrates 10 years of establishment and student leadership.

Every fully matriculated SMU undergraduate is a member of SMUSA, SMU’s student body helmed by the Students’ Association Council (SAC). The SAC comprises the SMUSA Executive Committee (ExCo), 6 School Constituent Bodies, and 4 CCA Constituent Bodies (CBds). With 99 clubs and societies under its belt, the SAC provides strategic direction, and promotes the welfare and interest for its members.

In 2010, we welcomed 3 new committees, namely the Constitutional Review Committee, Administrative Advisory Committee, and Sponsorship Committee. Cross collaborative initiatives across CBds have been among the highlights of the year, such as the Events Committee, and the Orientation Promotion Day organized for incoming freshmen.

In line with our SAC’s mission of being “approachable”, numerous people-based initiatives also surfaced. The CCA Leaders Symposium and SMUSA-Staff Tea Session helped the SAC build ties with many key stakeholders of SMU, and aided our working relationships over the year. With the introduction of the 1st International Students’ Secretary, we also witnessed increasing events and initiatives amongst international students.

Trying to capture a year long’s worth of events in the confines of these pages  hardly does justice to the hard work and passion of our students. But I hope that our accounts will help trigger your thoughts- May you recall fond memories and gather inspiration to strive more for our student life!

If you have noticed, this year’s annual report has adopted a smart, corporate slant, befitting of SMUSA’s

transition into a new phase- its 11th year. For that, I would like to thank Ms Vania Tanoto, my capable deputy, and Ms Sophia Lo, President of SMUSA, for their invaluable help in materializing my vision for this annual report.

PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT

Dear friends,

2010 has been a ride full of transitions for SMU; and for the SMUSA 6th SAC and 10th ExCo, a journey of humble service and dedication.

Amidst our 10th anniversary celebrations, we have experienced the transition in leadership from SMU President Professor Howard Hunter to Professor Arnoud de Meyer. We have adapted to the arrival of Bras Basah MRT and had a shift of our study benches along the concourse to SOE/SESS Level 1. We have tasted the transition of our student cafes from Tree House to Glass Room, Screme to Colours. Each of our inboxes had an increase from 100 MB to 10 GB. All these, and many more.

Still, we’re in transit, gearing ourselves up for the next lap - the beginning of a second decade for SMU.

As we embrace 2011, I am certain that the SMUSA Council and ExCo will continue to stay committed in promoting the rights and welfare of all students, so as to make SMU a community in which every student feels a sense of belonging.

May the legacy of many students who have dedicated themselves as leaders, recorded in the following pages of this annual report, continue to inspire you to believe and strive for greater things in the days to come.

Never underestimate your every little action, participation and engagement, for they can bring a surge of motivation, new perspective as well as enrich the lives of others. Hi friends,

On behalf of the 7th SMU Students’ Association Council (SAC), thank you for giving us the chance to serve you and to make a positive difference to your lives here in SMU. Please be assured that we will do our best to fulfill our promises made to you during the elections.

Regardless of your interest and affiliation, you will be represented in the SAC and your voices would be heard and acted upon.

The aim of the 7th SAC this year would be to cultivate a distinct and reputable student identity for SMU students. In that, we will strive for holistic student development both academically as well as in co-curricular activities to create this very identity. In line with our vision, we will seek to internalize this mindset in every student of SMU. By doing so, we hope to inculcate in you a sense of pride and identity of being an SMU student.

Integration between the 6 Schools Constituent Bodies and 4 CCA Constituent Bodies of SMUSA will also be essential in cultivating this identity. As such, do look forward to a tweaks in your favorite events that aim to inculcate this sense of integration. The upcoming year promises to be an extremely exciting one, filled with new initiatives and school-wide events seeking to explore uncharted waters.

All these might seem daunting and even impossible to fulfill by the end of one term in office, but we believe that by setting the gears of change in motion, our successors would one day get to that ideal state that we have dreamed up for the student population and SMU.

So join us on this leap of faith as we strive to make SMU truly a better place for all of you.

s the 6th Students’ Association Council (SAC) and 10th SMU Students’

Association Executive Committee (ExCo), my team and I set out with the broad picture of approachability in mind as we started our term to reach out to students and to champion for their best interests. “As the heart of the student body, we aspire to be approachable...” - a vision that we faithfully held on to throughout our term of service. We hoped that every SMU student would see SMUSA as trustworthy friends, as well as an avenue for problem-solving and value creation. FOR THE LITTLE THINGS OF STUDENT LIFE THAT TRULY GO A LONG WAY We believe that it is the small things that are crucial and attainable for the betterment of the student body. Instead of promising wonders, we promised realistic deliverables, which included the following: BOSS BIDDING SURVEY In our June bidding season, the number of biddable seats allocated for each section was reduced significantly, leading to many of our peers having 0 or 1 modules even after several rounds of biddings, and second major students faced even greater difficulty in obtaining their classes. We immediately conducted several online BOSS Bidding Feedback surveys to identify specific courses that lacked sufficient class sections. Armed with the survey results, the SAC worked closely with Registrar and school administrators to increase class sections and biddable seats where needed. Based on our suggestion, Registrar offered a 10 e-dollar incentive to students who indicate modules they were going to bid for in their coming term. With better predictability in course demand, the AY2010-2011 2nd semester bidding situation improved greatly.

MORE STUDY SPACES DURING EXAM PERIODS “There aren’t enough spaces in the library!” is a familiar lament as the exam period draws near each time. With the support of Dean of Students (DOS) Prof Low Aik Meng, Office of Facilities Management (OFM), school administrators and professors, we have managed to secure seminar rooms (SRs) which are not used by professors to be opened up to students for their examination revisions. AY2010-2011 2nd semester saw an average of 20 seminar rooms being made available in Week 14 as a study area. We hope this aided your revision process significantly. NO MORE MID-TERM EXAMS IN WEEK 8 Our inaugural Student Leaders’ Symposium highlighted an issue of an increasing number of professors who were conducting mid-term examinations in our recess week (Week 8). As such, clubs faced a dip in student participation rate for the events that coincided with that period. Students’ stress levels have also increased with exam preparations in recess week. With the support of the University Student Life Council (USLC) and Professor Pang Yang Hoong, we managed to get a guarantee that mid-term examinations will no longer be held during the weekdays of recess week.

BUILDING TOGETHERNESS In 2010, the SAC has committed time to attend events organized by our peers as a form of support, be it logistically, or in encouraging more of our friends to participate in these events together. This personal touch helped us reach out better to the student body. Through small talk and varied conversations, new friendships were made, and barriers were removed between SMUSA and the students – exemplifying another way ‘Approachability’ worked its way for us in 2010.

We believe that events are one of the best ways to bond people and produce a greater sense of belonging to SMU. In line with our vision, the Freshmen Team Building (FTB) Camp took a different direction this year. Again, ‘Approachability’ amongst facilitators was emphasized as they led their freshmen in the camp. To forge strong friendship right from the start of our freshmen’s SMU experience, be it at the FTB camp, Vivace, Convocation or Freshmen Bash, was the goal of the SMU Freshmen Experience. We held various events for SMU students with SMU students in mind. For interaction and bonding – that was our aim. A family, a community - something many SMU students envision SMU to be. But in reality, we know that there are some of us, who do not feel a sense of belonging to SMU as yet. We may feel a strong sense of belonging to our clubs and societies, to the events we have organized, to the OCIPs and study missions which we have joined. But what SMU means to each of us, deep inside, holds its own unique definition –

from our different experiences, our friends, and much more. Let us not forget that each of us play an important role in bringing others into our SMU family, our community, in many different ways. “It’s not what we have in life, but who we have alongside us that truly matters” ENCOURAGEMENT To encourage outstanding students who have contributed largely to student life and the community, we worked with various stakeholders to recognize these contributions in ways we could achieve. “From students, to students.” – I urge you to continue to strive in making a difference for student life here in SMU because student life is all about you. REACHING OUT “Help us to help you” “We understand, because we’re students too” These are the two phrases which our peers often see and hear from us because truly, safeguarding students’ interests, championing students’ rights, and empowering students have always been our source of purpose and motivation. Various channels of communication were adopted to enable us to obtain feedback and comments fast and efficiently, leaving little time for matters to aggravate. Our launch of the SMUSA Facebook page this year, with the current 1,700 fans, has been one avenue where we update our peers on issues’ follow ups as well as create greater awareness of upcoming events. Facebook also served as a platform for our peers to notify us on any urgent matters such as network problems and BOSS bidding issues. Though we are students too, many matters only truly came to light when we were able to hear from the student body. Enhanced interaction and communication with the various stakeholders of the university, especially students, allowed us to act on what really tugged at the heartstrings of our fellow schoolmates.

CONTINUITY COLLABORATIONS WITH OUR ALUMNI In a bid to extend relations to our very successful SMU Alumni Association (SMUAA), I have initiated the FIFA World Cup screening, an event which marked the beginning of the SMUSA-SMUAA’s long-term collaboration. The event was held in summer and it enabled SMUSA to tie-up with SMUAA for the first time, thereby bringing the two bodies together. We hope to be able to further establish closer ties for future collaborations where we may provide two-way learning and assistance through various avenues left to be explored. HEARTFELT APPRECIATION To all SMU students: Thank you for giving the 6th SAC and 10th ExCo the opportunity to serve the school. Thank you for raising pertinent school issues to us, be it through our conversations, emails, online channels, dialogue sessions or feedback surveys. Your participation, support and encouragement have kept us going in our humble term of service. To all who have served the school alongside us - CBd ExCos, SMUSA committees, SMUSA event committees and organizers, FTB facilitators, all clubs and societies: Thank you for all your hard work, time, passion, and commitment in creating a memorable and meaningful student life. Your contribution has made all the difference. To then President Howard Hunter, President Arnoud de Meyer, senior management, the Office of Registrar, Office of Facilities Management, Office of Finance, Office of Career Services, Office of Corporate Communications, Integrated Information Technology Services and Leasing Business Unit, Thank you for

your concern for student development, and all the valuable meetings in making decisions alongside SMUSA for the betterment of SMU. To Prof Low and Bernie: Thank you for all your guidance and for giving us your trust every step of the way, and empowering us in our drive to make changes for the school. To all the Office of Student Life (OSL) Managers: Thank you for all the help and for giving us the drive to progress with every event we have organized. To Mr. Wong Yew Tong: Thank you for seeing us through our term of service, keeping us on track with our growth, and for giving us encouragement and confidence, especially in times where we needed it more than anything else. To the 10 CBd presidents: Thank you for your commitment in leading your respective CBds well, for your support and constant understanding. Thank you for all the valuable lessons as we all grew together in our journey of service. To my dear ExCo: It’s been a challenging yet fruitful journey of serving together. Thank you for starting the race together, and staying dedicated together till the very end. I am truly blessed to have all of you. To my family and friends: Thank you for being my constant pillars of support, for your prayers, for picking me up whenever I fall, and for always being there for me. Above all, I thank the Lord for His amazing grace.

Another year dawns for SMUSA, and I have full faith and confidence that Mr. Ryan Tan will be able to lead the 7th SAC and 11th ExCo in exemplifying SMUSA’s vision and break new boundaries.

“To Lead is to Serve” espite its fair share of ups and downs, 2010 has been a good year for me.

Looking back at the SMUSA election then, I am grateful that I overcame my risk-adverse nature to make the decision to run for SMUSA and for the position of Vice President (VP). Special thanks to Mr. Don Liu and Mr. Daren Li from the 9th SMUSA Executive Committee (ExCo) for their advice and guidance, which helped me make the decision to take a leap of faith to run for Vice President. CONSTITUTION REVIEW The Constitutional Review Committee was set up in 2010 to review and amend the SMUSA and Constituent Bodies’ (CBds) Constitutions. Please refer to the Constitutional Review Committee report (Page 79) for more details. STANDING COMMITTEES This year also saw the introduction of 2 standing committees: The Admin ist rat ive Adv isory Committee (AAC) , helmed by SMUSA Honorary General Secretary (HGS) Ms. Emile Law, is made up of the HGS of 10 CBds. Please refer to the AAC report on Page 72 for more details. The Events Committee , led by SMUSA Events Secretary, Mr. Michael Joo was also set up. It comprises of the Event Directors of each CBd. You may refer to Page 80 for the detailed report write up.

The presence of these committees increased interaction and cooperation among the SMUSA ExCo and the 10 CBds. Such collaborations helped highlight common challenges which could be tackled more effectively. The committee discussions also lent a more strategic slant to what were originally rather operational roles.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES This aspect has been strongly emphasized by the 10th SMUSA ExCo. Reviews were done on all SMUSA guidelines. We started to document many operational procedures in writing to ensure its continuity and effective dissemination. There was also strong enforcement of the guidelines, especially email guidelines, which led to a decrease in email violations. Our review efforts led up to the creation of a new initiative called the Handover Exercise (HE), an initiative I take particular pride of. Thus, as the name suggests, HE ensures that all CCAs have a standard set of handover procedures. I was personally involved in this initiative and as of now, I am proud to say that all the 99 clubs and societies under SMUSA have undergone SMUSA’s inaugural Handover Exercise. FACILITIES I led a taskforce to address facility issues in SMU. We had a checklist of items we wanted to achieve, and conducted 2 surveys to garner feedback and information from students. Although we did not accomplish all the things on our check list, I believe that we have made progress. We were able to get

an extension of air conditioning hours even on Sundays during the peak weeks. Students also, now have the right to study in SMU until 12 midnight without getting chased. Seminar Rooms will be opened for students in Week 14 to increase the amount of study spaces in school. The feedback given to OFM on the level of cleanliness in SMU prompted OFM to review their cleaning system. Toilet hygiene has been improved, more trash bins have been placed around school and the carpets were shampooed. Ms. Yan Wen, SMUSA Student Initiatives Secretary, and I were also invited to sit in the Campus Green Committee. This committee was set to look into making SMU an environmentally friendly campus. I would like to thank the Office of Facilities Management, especially Mr. Goh Thiang Hock and Mr. Ben Goh for all their support. SMUSA STAFF TEA SESSION To build better relations with the offices, we initiated the SMUSA Staff Tea Session. The first one was held in March to give the officers a better understanding of how student leadership is run in SMU. It was the starting point of a good relationship with the offices for the year of 2010. The second one was held in October where we introduced the officers to the 7th SAC. We also went through the Student Satisfaction Survey results with the officers to allow them to better understand the students as well as our concerns. These were fruitful sessions where many issues were brought up and discussed. My hope is that such sessions continue as it allows for open and constant communication between SMUSA and the officers. TRI-UNIVERSITY EXCHANGE A Tri-University Exchange was initiated as a result of a SAC exchange to Hong Kong & Macau. The fruitful sharing session with NTU and NUS saw common issues debated, ideas generated, and good relations forged among the 3 universities.

GLASSROOM 2010 saw the first change of owners for the space at Level 2 SIS from Treehouse to Glassroom. A team of 5 dedicated students won the bid for Glassroom because of their passion and creativity. Glassroom is now a “the” place to hang out for those looking for a cosy setting with good food. OPEN HOUSE Together with Deputy Events Secretary, Mr. Jacob Selvan, we worked together with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA) to organize the Student Life segment of Open House. Unlike prior years, where our booths were placed in a low traffic location- the Sports Hall, we were able to secure the Level 2 and 3 of the Administration Building, where we got better traffic. What was also different this year was a new booth called “The SMU Experience”. This was a wall which exhibited what a SMU student would enjoy in his stay in SMU, ranging from the Freshmen Experience, Community Service, Internships to CCAs. I would like to thank the CCA CBd presidents for their support and understanding in coordinating this event. CONVOCATION Together with Mr. Jacob Selvan, we jointly produced the Pre-formal Segment of Convocation 2010 with the OSL team. A more elaborate write up can be found under the Convocation report on Page 91. PRESIDENT HOWARD HUNTER FAREWELL When then President Howard Hunter was in his final term of office, I was asked to organize a

farewell party. This was one of the most challenging periods in my term as I was given around one week to plan it. There was a lot of coordination to be done between the offices, the students and the CCAs. Thanks Jacob for your help during this hectic period. We hope that President Hunter and Mrs. Hunter enjoyed the event.

SMUSA AWARDS NIGHT 2011- THE AVENUE OF STARS SMUSA Awards Night 2011 is set to be different. In previous years, a committee would be set up by the incoming SMUSA ExCo to plan this event. However, the 10th SMUSA ExCo felt that since the purpose of SMUSA Awards Night is to appreciate those who have contributed for the year of 2010, the responsibility of planning for this event should fall upon the 10th SMUSA ExCo. As such, Mr. Jacob Selvan and I are now hard at work planning for this event. So do join us on 28th January, Friday at 7pm at Wavehouse for a night of celebration and appreciation of Student Life! “GRATITUDE IS THE MEMORY OF THE HEART” I would like to take this opportunity to thank every single person whom I have come in contact with who contributed to this amazing year. Each one of you made the year what it was. I would like to thank all those who gave me this opportunity and who had faith in me. Thank you for allowing me to serve the school which I love.

To my family, thank you for supporting my decision to run for SMUSA even though it meant that I would not be around a lot. To the 6th SAC, we have been through much but I am glad that I took this journey with you all. To Mr. Daniel Minardi, I am confident that the Vice President role is in more than capable hands. I am proud of you and your journey thus far. Continue to grow in this new journey. To the 7th SAC, pace yourself in your year-long marathon. Do know that I am here for you in anyway if you need. SMUSA, I WILL MISS YOU.

e all have our share of unexpected outcomes and challenges in life, and we

can choose to make the most out of it, or hide. My past year serving SMU Students’ Association (SMUSA) saw myself facing challenges head on, forging forward to improve many aspects of SMUSA. It is with relief tinged with sadness that I finally wrap up my portfolio in this report.

GRATITUDE The transition into my portfolio had been embellished with early trials. Hence, before accounting for my term proper, I must first thank the 9th SMUSA Executive Committee- Mr. Avnish Desai, Mr. Don Liu, Mr. Daren Li, Ms. Delphine Hu, Ms. Rachel Kok and Ms. Rachel Yang for being the source of guidance and information when I had to step into my portfolio in early November 2009. That crucial transition period became the crux in paving my goals and direction for my term, and for that- Thank you! AGM AND INVESTITURE 2010 My deputy, Ms. Vania Tanoto and I organized the SMUSA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Investiture as part of our first constitutional duty. In witness of 258 SMUSA members and various school officers, we seamlessly executed our first formal ceremony of the year.

SMUSA POLICIES Redeeming credibility for SMUSA policies and guidelines were among my main challenges. We began by enforcing our mass email policy. 2 emails a week, 1 email a day. No email above 300kb. It was a difficult few months for Ms. Vania and I as she painstakingly monitored mass mails, and I negotiated with many clubs in our efforts to mete out fair and equitable penalties. This process, despite being initially challenging, taught me the value of nipping problems in the bud. SMUSA’s credibility and the students’ trust in us forms the foundation of a healthy relationship. And the success of establishing this trust enabled me to forge ahead to improve and expand the scope of SMUSA policies, thus providing certainty and guidance for many of SMUSA’s operations. CLUB MANAGEMENT The management of clubs were streamlined and improved over the year. Centralized Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for club creations1, transfers, and closures2 were introduced, and my portfolio expanded to encompass overseeing the management of clubs. Our SOP for club creation helped saved time in reviewing new club proposals. After meeting the students in person, I would direct worthy proposals to an assigned Constituent Body (CBd) for direct evaluation. This eliminated frustrations

when past proposals kept circulating repetitively among CBds. In summary, our guidelines now include: -­‐ Form A- Club Formation -­‐ Form B- Club Transfer -­‐ Form C- Club Closure -­‐ SMUSA Club Setup Procedures -­‐ Club Formation + Transfer + Closure Guideline The personal discussions with students allowed me to share advice regarding club proposals, and prepare the students for future challenges they will face in establishing their club. Some of these issues included SMUSA budget thresholds, integration concerns into the CBds, cannibalization of existing clubs, as well as development space for their club. To safeguard the financial interests of SMUSA’s existing clubs, new clubs, on a case-by-case basis, would undergo a trial period where they are subjected to more stringent budgeting, aimed to test the resilience and sustainability of the club. With the support of the SAC, open ExCo recruitment for clubs has also been banned in our effort to uphold the quality of student leadership in SMU. The introduction of the Handover Exercise (HE) through the Administrative Advisory Committee (AAC) was another milestone in enforcing SMUSA’s Guidelines and ensuring that incoming ExCos received proper handovers. More details can be found under the Administrative Advisory Committee (AAC) report (page 72). ELECTION The SMUSA General and Internal Election protocols were revamped this year. Review work started in summer, when as part of the Constitutional Review Committee, I spent long nights pouring over the 10 CBd Constitutions to identify the most effective and equitable clauses for SMUSA. The improved framework was unanimously passed at an SAC meeting, and took effect for the SMUSA 2010 Election. Working with the ExCo and the election committee, more guidelines, SOPs and standing orders were created in place to strengthen and solidify the election mechanism for the current and future election committee(s). One significant point determined in the guideline was that the entire SMUSA ExCo, excluding myself, would abstain

from any involvement in the SMUSA election. My role would be limited to serving as point of contact and advisor regarding operational matters of the election committee. No one in the SAC, including myself would have decisional influence over the election committee. To facilitate work and decision making processes of the election committee, an additional member was added to ensure an odd-numbered committee, thus enabling the committee to make internal decisions by votes when necessary. We also increased the transparency of the SMUSA election recruitment. For the first time, we conducted an open recruitment of the election committee. Our election chairperson, Mr. Ju Xiao Yong and his 4 election officers, Ms. Sim Yok Teng, Mr. Indra Darmawan, Ms. Audrey Lim and Mr. Irshad were selected through an interview with the 10 CBd presidents of the 6th SAC. This election committee proved instrumental in providing timely feedback through their queries and opinions. It was with their collaboration that the SMUSA Internal Election Standing Order, comprising detailed protocol of the internal election, materialized. I am immensely grateful and proud to see them adapt so quickly to their roles and surpass my expectations. This year’s CBd elections were closely monitored. In the capacity of an SAC member and neutral party, I stepped in to assist the proceedings of CBd elections where necessary. Much credit has to be given to various CBds such as the Special Interest

and Community Service Sodality (SICS) and School of Information Systems (SISS) for their tough stance of postponing their proceedings to fulfill the required attendance from their members, in an effort to ensure an equitable election. Indeed, 2010 marked a year where the SMUSA electoral process achieved a significant milestone in terms of development and maturity. BEYOND PORTFOLIO Given the nature of my portfolio, I was naturally involved in a lot of internal and external email correspondences, which tied me down a lot. Going above and beyond my portfolio was something that I wanted to do, and I’m grateful for opportunities to explore beyond my portfolio of duty when I could. One significant initiative that I got to partake in was the Facilities Taskforce with Ms. Tessa Ang, Ms. Vania Tanoto and Mr. Brendon Png. We collated students’ feedback regarding the use of SMU study areas as part of our efforts to increase air-conditioning extension hours. Another major initiative occurred in April 2010. Based on a hunch that a lot of study areas in SMU were underutilized, my deputy and I emailed the entire SMU faculty and collated all the unused seminar and class rooms in SMU that were unused in Week 14. With the professor’s consensus, these locations were released as study areas in Week 14. It was an immensely labor intensive effort which drew attention at a University of Student Life Committee (USLC) meeting. Henceforth, the task of collating the unused teaching facilities in week 14 was assigned to the individual school offices, and SMUSA takes on a coordination role. LOOKING AHEAD As tiring as the year had been, it has been a fulfilling one. There is certainly more that I would have loved to see through for SMUSA. But given physical and mental limitations, I seek forgiveness that I could not serve the student body more. In passing the baton, I place my faith in the 7th SAC- the fresh blood who will continue to bring SMUSA from strength to strength. To my successor, Ms. Zizie, and her deputy, Ms. Phua Yanqi, I entrust you with the task of continuing our work, and elevate SMUSA to greater heights.

NOSTALGIA Looking back, nowhere did I expect to see my portfolio-deemed truly dry and intensive, become what it is today. I dedicate all the success in service to my peers in SMUSA : For your valuable critic when I was looking into guidelines and electoral amendments, humor when I was most work laden, calling me for lunch, dinner or packed food despite constant rejections, and being the listener although I don’t think I made sense a lot of times, thank you. I can’t name everyone here, but I’m sure you know who you are. To the 6th SAC: Thank you for your votes of faith. None of the guidelines would have taken effect if not for your backing. No standing order or constitution, or even the AAC would have materialized if not for your support. To my family and friends in Malaysia: Thank you for accepting my constant absence, for letting me pursue what I believe in, and always being there when I needed a break. It is because your presence in my life that I have the courage to do what I’m doing, and become who I am today. To my comrade, buddy, and best friend- Ms. Vania Tanoto: I don’t know how else to sum it up than with a true thank you. Vania, I could not have asked for a better deputy, and I would not have been able to expand our portfolio if not for the comfort in knowing that you were there to cover our base. The endless minute taking, tedious administrative work is something that we will remember and probably laugh over one day, not to mention our countless late nights. It has been a wonderful journey with you and I’m glad you stepped up to it. Thank You!

ear 2010 is the year which, when I reflect upon in many years to come, I

would not have wanted to spend in any other way. Exactly one year ago, while still a freshman, I would have never imagined myself taking up the challenge to serve a large student body. It was an unfamiliar journey. Nonetheless, I will never regret having chosen the road less travelled and I am glad that I have been able to accomplish so much during my year-long term in SMUSA. ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS ADMINISTRATIVE ADVISORY COMMITTEE I was the Vice Chairperson of the committee which consists of all the secretaries of the ten Constituent Bodies (CBds). Together with Ms. Emile Law, the Chairperson, we held efficient meetings with the 1st Administrative Advisory Committee (AAC). More details on the functions, operations and progress of the committee can be found under the Administrative Advisory Committee (AAC) report (page 72). MANAGING CLUB EMAILS Greater autonomy for clubs to send mass emails to the SMU community also meant that SMUSA had to conscientiously monitor the influx of emails. I was in charge of manually supervising the email traffic. In this process, I helped balance SMUSA’s stand of supporting clubs in their publicity efforts and safeguarding students from unnecessary emails. As we meted out penalties to clubs and societies who failed to abide by SMUSA’s email guidelines,

we also exercised sensitivity by adjusting email penalties to those whose needs were justified. Once our streamlining efforts became more manageable, our email monitoring began to encompass liaising with IITS to mitigate emails from various school offices. As a result of our consistent efforts, we have been able to see a pleasant dip in number of unnecessary emails as well as frequency of violations. SMUSA NOTICEBOARD I was in charge of designing and maintaining the board. And in line with our ExCo’s vision which emphasized ‘approachability’, this year’s notice board design contained personalized individual portfolios and contact details of the ExCo members, SMUSA’s past events as well as updates.

SMU WALL The SMU Wall was an initiative by the past ExCo to increase means of reaching out to the SMU community. However, it only materialized during our term and I was entrusted, with the help from Ms. Sophia Lo, Ms. Winnie Soh and Ms. Wang Sha, to turn an empty black board into an interactive medium. During our term, our SMU Wall offered students the opportunity to give feedback or suggestions about student life anonymously, and featured photos depicting the vibrant student life in SMU.

OTHERS Effectively, my role as the Deputy General Secretary stretched beyond the standard call of duties. This is something which my ExCo is familiar with- taking on cross portfolio initiatives. Among some projects I partook included planning the programme for a visit from University Sains Malaysia, assisting with assets loan, being part of the committee for the SMUSA ‘RESPONSIBLE FUN’ campaign – an initiative to promote responsible drinking during campus events, supporting SMUSA summer events, creating study spaces for students during Week 14 and being part of SMUSA Student Production Team for Convocation 2010.

APPRECIATION With all the gratitude I can summon: To my dearest 10th Exco – For giving me the opportunity to serve and assume the position which I will always be grateful for, thank you for helping me paint fond memories of my freshmen year with toils and celebrations. To my cheerful partner Emile – For believing in me from the very start, relentlessly motivating me to

reach further, allowing me to grow, learn and make independent decisions as the term progressed. It has been a privilege working closely with you which of course, entailed to very late night stays and calls. I have not only found a working partner, but also a best friend.

To my cherished family and friends – Together, you wove a net beneath my tightrope without which – quite simply – I would not have been able to walk through to where I am today. Thank you for your love, understanding and the unwavering support, and to my fellow schoolmates, particularly, for allowing me to serve you during my term. And above all, I thank God for his many blessings. TO THE 7th SAC I believe in your capability and commitment to carry on our work and surpass our expectations. Anticipate new challenges with open mind and walk the experience with positive energy – only with that can you look back with pride and say, “I have done my best for the betterment of student life.”

he past year has posed several unique challenges for the Finance portfolio.

Despite an increase in the number of active clubs and societies under the SMU Students’ Association (SMUSA), our budget injection shrank by $19,000 (-7.12%). Thankfully, this shortfall was compensated by further budget injection from the Office of Student Life (OSL) alongside higher utilization of SAC and Club Reserves. In conjunction with SMU’s 10th Anniversary celebrations, student life in SMU remained vibrant with activities such as sporting events and 10th anniversary celebrations. MAJOR FINANCE INITIATIVES IN 2010 Among the goals of the finance portfolio in year 2010 was to further improve the SMUSA finance system by increasing operational efficiency, streamline the claims process and increase interaction between SMU’s Office of Finance (OFIN), SMUSA finance secretaries and the Finance Committee (FINCOM) members. ONLINE REQUEST FORM FOR SMUSA RECEIPT BOOKS The issuance of SMUSA receipt books was made more efficient by implementing an online request form.

This online form helped consolidate and formalize requests for receipt books. Distribution of the receipts books was also standardized to be done on a weekly basis. Such measures enhanced order and facilitated more efficient issuance of SMUSA receipt books. Students can request for receipt books at www.tinyurl.com/smusareceiptbooks. ADDITIONS TO BUDGET GUIDELINES Having successfully launched the first consolidated budget guideline for all SMUSA clubs and societies by the 5th FINCOM, the 6th Finance Committee reviewed and supplemented the budget guideline to also standardize expenditure for items such as corporate gift purchases and name tent expenditure. These amendments created common standards across the CBds and ensured appropriate expenditures for these standardized items. ONLINE CLAIMS SYSTEM REVAMP In 2010, a pilot test of the first version of the Online Claims System revealed several structural errors. After a 2-month review conducted with Mr. Tommy Tien, SMUSA’s IT Solutions Secretary, and a Final Year Project (FYP) group from the School of Information System (SISS), an improved version of the Online Claims System has been reworked and will undergo beta testing and, is scheduled for launch the 2nd half of 2011. This system will enhance transparency and access to information among club finance secretaries and presidents, allowing them direct access to latest budget and claim records, with an indication of its status. As an informational platform, clubs would

get to use accurate information in events planning, track their clubs’ financial “health”, and monitor their budget utilization rates proactively. The Online Claims System would also reduce paper usage in the claims process, thus contributing, in its own way, towards an eco-friendly movement. RECLASSIF ICATION OF CLUBS Due to differing operational and strategic goals set out by the affected clubs, several clubs under the SMUSA umbrella were reclassified to better reflect the aligned visions with parent offices. Cognitare and E.y.E Investment Interactive Club were reclassified under the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, while SMU International Connections (ICON) was reclassified directly under the SMU ExCo. This was done to allow better utilization of resources and more streamlined management of the clubs. Correspondingly, club accounts were reclassified appropriately to reflect these changes. SMUSA FINANCE DROPBOX The renovation of the CCA room saw the removal of SMUSA’s finance dropboxes to make room for the new SMU Ambassadors’ room. In replacement of the old dropboxes, OFIN has kindly donated new dropboxes located outside the SMUSA Exco Room. With the more prominent location of the new dropboxes and its better security features, submission of claims by clubs and CBds has become more straightforward.

APPRECIATION This past year has been an eventful year and I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who has been a part of this journey. First, to my family for being so supportive- All of you have been a constant source of support and encouragement. To my SMU peers, thank you for believing in me and voting me into the 10th SMUSA ExCo. I thank you for this opportunity to serve you as the Honorary Finance Secretary. I would like to thank the 10th SMUSA ExCo and 6th SAC for the memories, experiences and opportunities over the past year. I have learnt an invaluable amount from each and every one of you. From this experience, I take with me fond memories of our meetings, working together, the Students Association Council’s Hong Kong exchange and ExCo retreat, and many more. To my deputy Mr. Daniel Lee: Daniel, thank you for being the most supportive, understanding, reliable, dependable and hardworking peer and partner in crime. I have utmost admiration for your self-discipline and work ethic. Your contributions have been invaluable to the achievements we have enjoyed during our term. I could not have asked for a better deputy to share this experience with. Thank you. t was just one year ago when I started my term of office in the SMU Students’

Association’s Executive Committee (SMUSA ExCo). Club finances have been and will always remain as the most important issue in everyone’s mind, and the position as the Deputy Finance Secretary was indeed a heavy responsibility for me. Together with the SMUSA Honorary Finance Secretary, Ms. Sarah Swee, we took charge of maintaining the integrity and transparency of the SMUSA finance system. I now write to share some of the more pertinent review points gathered from my one year of service. I hope that the content of this report will help enhance the SMUSA finance system, and serve as learning points for club ExCos to come.

CLUB BUDGETING Budgeting has always been the most contentious topic at the start of every budgeting semester. The 6th SMUSA Finance Committee has strived to ensure that budget is equitably distributed to all clubs and societies. As our allocated budget does not grow in accordance to our wishes, I strongly encourage future club ExCos to budget prudently. Budget standards are constantly enforced so that funds can be prioritized for more essential purposes, such as for training, asset purchases and activities that cater to the entire SMU student population. Budget utilization is also another important benchmark in determining the performance of the clubs’ ExCo. Poor utilization rates would not only affect the performance of a club, but also the club’s capacity to justify future funding requests as unused budget could be better allocated to other clubs instead. Hence, this is a strong reminder for

all ExCos to remain observant for what they budget and to use it wisely. USAGE OF CLUB RESERVES Given that SMU is primarily a business-oriented school, SMUSA’s Finance Committee (FINCOM) would like to encourage clubs and societies to organize more revenue generating activities of which can be channeled to fund their own club related expenditure. Unspent club income can be kept in the reserves, for timely use in the future. However, reserves that exist for no specific intention or purpose should be used instead of being left dormant indefinitely. This will help reinforce SMUSA FINCOM’s policy of remaining fair and equitable to clubs, and allocate budget to clubs that do not have sufficient reserves. Therefore, we encourage clubs to use their reserves to supplement their budget request so that we can maximize budget usage for the Association as a whole. F INANCIAL CLAIMS I had constantly received emails regarding the status of the claims for various individuals. I understand that the speed of reimbursement of claims is important to us, being students. I would like to emphasize that SMU’s Office of Finance (OFIN) handles a large volume of claims every day and time is needed for the processing of claims. Delays are often caused by rejection claims that do not adhere to submission requirements.

Therefore, I highly encourage incoming ExCos to read the SMUSA Financial Procedure Manual thoroughly to ensure smooth processing of their claims. This Manual is readily available on the SMUSA website. Queries may be directed them to the respective CBd or SMUSA Finance Secretaries, so that the manual can be improved further. I hope that with the implementation of the Online Claims System, claims can be better monitored and that the rejection rate of claims will be factored in when evaluating the performance of club finances. OUTLOOK FOR 2011 Given the rather optimistic economic outlook for 2011, it is timely for clubs to seek sponsorship, be it monetary or in kind, for their activities. This can help reduce budget reliance on the Students’ Association Council (SAC) funds. I have faith in the incoming 7th SMUSA Finance Committee, that they will take further steps to streamline the budget utilization of clubs. I also hope that clubs will give their utmost support to their finance secretaries so as to bring the SMUSA finances to greater heights. APPRECIATION Throughout my term of office, I have had the privilege of serving the SMU student population to the best of my abilities, and would like to thank the following people who have helped me in one way or another: To the SMU Office of Finance (Miss Jacqueline Ng, Mr. Jeffery Tan, Miss Tay Cheng Siew, Miss Elaine Chew, Miss Rosemarie Carbaya, Miss Lee Xiao Shan, Miss Kate Wong, Miss Korine Lee and the rest of the OFIN family) – You have been instrumental in maintaining the SMUSA finance system. Without your support, we would not have achieved what we have set out to do. For that, I would like to sincerely thank you for all your hard work. I hope that you will continue to support Mr. Gary Tan and his team.

To my fellow SMU Xtremists (SMUX) members – Thank you for your kind understanding when I was not able to join certain SMUX activities due to my SMUSA commitments. You will definitely see more of me in 2011!

To the 10th SMUSA ExCo – You are certainly the greatest bunch of people that I have worked with. Your passion has certainly given me the motivation to endure any difficulties and push on. You have made the one year journey wonderful and

memorable for me. This experience would be permanently etched in my mind.

To the Office of Student Life (OSL) – Thank you for your endless support, encouragement, guidance and advice throughout my term of office.

To the 11th SMUSA ExCo and 7th SAC –Make sure you seize this opportunity to make a difference. If you do ever run out of motivation or run into any major obstacles, always remember why you decided to run for office and the people who have voted you in. All the best for your term of office!

To Mr. Gary Tan and Mr. Mark Pereira – You have undertaken a heavy responsibility. Do not be daunted by the task before you. Remember, only by breaking the limits will you be able to improve the SMUSA finance system and make a difference. Good luck!

ear 2010 has been a rewarding year. Since the beginning of my journey in the

SMU Students’ Association (SMUSA), the word “opportunity” has been a constant inspiration for me. SMUSA was itself an opportunity that I had decided to grab on to, to make a difference in SMU’s student life and our very own school culture. Being a member of the 6th Students’ Association Council (SAC), the Assets Secretary of 10th SMUSA Executive Committee (SA ExCo) and Chairperson of the Assets Management Committee (AMC), I have been able to be involved and contribute to student life in many small ways. As the Assets Secretary of the 10th SA ExCo, my role was mainly to provide logistic coordination and support to the various portfolios within SMUSA, be it the Constituent Bodies (CBds), Clubs and the general student population for the purpose of promoting student life. BOOTH SUPPORT

Logistical support for booths was one of the key areas which directly contributed to student life activities. Booths are used mainly for marketing purposes, events sign up and fund raising. We have maintained our past practice in partnership with the Office of Student Life by hiring student helpers on the Work & Study Grant (WSG). These students help us daily in the issuance of tables and chairs for loan between 10 to 11 am, and from 5 to 6 pm in when these items are returned. STANDARDIZATION OF ASSETS Previously, there had been much confusion in terms of identifying chairs that were loaned for booths. We have mitigated this issue by reducing the variations of types of chairs from 4 to 2, and have replaced the older chairs with new ones.

To better facilitate the loan process, we have also implemented a numbering system for our assets, where each table and chair has been assigned with a unique number tagged to it. With this implementation, it has been easier to keep track of our assets and increased our efficiency in managing items that were loaned our and returned. CCA ROOM BUILT-IN LOCKERS Storage space has always been an ongoing concern for SMUSA, CBds, clubs, and societies. We strongly recognized this need and have been actively sourcing for possible solutions in keeping up with locker demand. One identified solution

was to ensure proper utilization of built-in lockers located in the CCA Room.

Previously, there was no proper system to monitor the utilization of the lockers and the master keys to the lockers were often unavailable. By recollecting past data, we have implemented a new master key system where we would hold a master key for every built-in locker. With this new system, we are now able to monitor locker utilization and free up underutilized lockers for clubs and societies that need locker space. ASSETS MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Together with the Assets Secretaries or Assets Managers of the four CCA CBds, the AMC managed the coordination of various assets and facilities within SMUSA, and were responsible for the loan of assets to the clubs and societies. In this committee, we have successfully coordinated the logistical support for over ten orientation camps and many other activities during the summer of 2010. In addition, we have formed the Assets Committee which comprises a team of four. This special committee was tasked with different projects that aimed to focus on improving our assets management system, implementing changes as approved by the AMC and the SMUSA ExCo. These projects included the Assets Audit, streamlining of CCA Room built-in lockers, management of storeroom, booth loan procedures, guidelines and many others. APPRECIATION It has been an honor and privilege to be part of 6th SAC and 10th SMUSA ExCo. The SAC and SMUSA ExCo have been through countless hours of meetings and have done our best in the betterment of student life and SMU. I am glad that we have made it through our term of service and

would like to extend my appreciation to all the SAC members who have been through this journey with me.

y primary role as the Business Secretary of the SMU Students’ Association

(SMUSA) is to improve student life through professional collaborations with business corporations. Throughout the past year, I strove to create and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners as well as to capture value for SMUSA. Our efforts were fruitful. The increased sponsorship revenue secured for clubs and societies in SMU has alleviated budget constraints that has perpetually plagued SMUSA and enabled better quality events in SMU. More importantly, we have helped our University as a whole as the increase in profits from SMUSA has reduced the financial burden of a university that is constantly grappling with rising annual costs.

STRATEGIZING SMUSA ’S SPONSORSHIPS I have also continued the legacy of my predecessor, Mr. Alson Chew of coordinating sponsorships within a Sponsorship Committee (please refer to page 87 for more details). This once fledging committee has since taken great strides, and has helped create sponsorships of higher value for SMUSA and its CBds, hence fulfilling its objectives. This has been an unprecedentedly successful year for sponsorships, more so due to the successful completion of large cash sponsors.

I attribute this success to the SMUSA Sponsorship Committee, an ad-hoc team that spearheads SMUSA’s strategic direction for sponsorships and

co-ordinates a sponsorship package that can benefit all CBds. Chaired by myself, this committee comprises the sponsorship heads from all CBds.

By merging our interests and establishing the Business Secretary as a centralized contact point for SMUSA, I was able to better represent SMUSA in liaising with our corporate partners and creating value for all stakeholders. Other factors contributing to this success was the accurate identification of our corporate partners’ needs, the introduction of an exclusivity clause, and the sharing of BIZCOM’s marketing research data.

I am pleased to announce that we have received more than $60,000 in cash sponsorships in this year alone.

CREATING VALUE FOR SMUSA ’S EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS Serving as the contact point for commercial entities this year, I am delighted to have received more than 100 proposals over the year from various organizations. This demonstrates the strong brand name that BIZCOM has established over the year. Most of them were directed to SMU BIZCOM, where these parties can either work with our Events team, or be a part of the exciting UniVantage privilege card scheme. The success of both divisions under SMU BIZCOM has been significant, and I would share more of their achievements in the SMU BIZCOM report section in page 75.

SUPPORTING SMUSA COMMITTEES The vast increase in sponsorship deals in 2010 has enabled BIZCOM to support our fellow committees under SMUSA. We collaborated with our partner, OCBC Bank to initiate a SMUSA Movie Gala in September 2010, successfully organized as a welfare initiative by the SMUSA Welfare Committee. With full support from the BIZCOM ExCo, we also contributed our profits to supporting the Exam Welfare Package by inviting Frolicks (April 2010) and Ben & Jerry’s (November 2010) to give out free ice-cream in support of our exam-stressed peers.

In addition, I have also pledged to invest in the SMUSA Branding Committee to ensure they have the necessary funding to kick start a product line to grow the SMU brand. The Freshmen Teambuilding (FTB) Camp Handbook also received a cash injection, resulting in an excellent quality leather book to match the efforts of its design team.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE IN THE LEASING COMMITTEE 2010 brought an interesting change to this portfolio: the incumbent President of BIZCOM and SMUSA Business Secretary would become part of the Leasing Committee as a student representative.

Being part of the decision-making team that strategizes the tenant mix in SMU was both an honour and a major responsibility. Being part of this committee meant I could represent the students’ views as an equal, such as concerns over the rising food prices in SMU.

Through soliciting feedback from students regarding existing tenants and the preference towards future tenants, I could contribute to the decision-making process in the Leasing Committee. Many student views were collated via the SMUSA Business Dialogue Session and SMUSA Tenants’ Preferences Survey. Appropriate action was then taken together with LBU regarding issues such as food hygiene and student sentiments about tenant-related issues.

Beyond operational duties such as upholding the SMUSA Sponsorship Guidelines and the LBU-OSL-SMUSA Leasing Agreement, I have also expanded my portfolio to encompass an understanding of students’ preferences of tenants within SMU, as well as feedback regarding existing ones.

SMUSA-BIZCOM CCA SCHOLARSHIP/STUDENT LIFE AWARD SMUSA continues to care for our peers, and I am pleased to present the CCA Scholarship and the Student Life Awards. Established in 2010, the student life awards were awarded during the SMUSA Awards Night for the first time ever to outstanding student leaders who have contributed positively to the SMU community. The strong commitment and dedication shown by some of our fellow peers continue to spur me on to work harder for BIZCOM to generate revenue.

I hand over my position to Mr. Nikhil Antony Jonas, the next Business Secretary and BIZCOM Director. I am optimistic that he will continue to bring BIZCOM to greater heights, making it not just a CCA that empowers its members and gives everyone an invaluable experience in dealing with businesses, but also one that continues to serve the community via our awards and contributions to SMUSA.

he Communications portfolio concerns itself with the presentation of the SMU

Students’ Association’s (SMUSA) dealings with stakeholders across the university; this extends from soliciting views from the student bodies, to the advisement on possibly effects of university or SMUSA policies. By and large, the aim of the portfolio this year has been to ascertain the boundaries associated with and qualities necessary for the empowerment of the student body through the Association. Indubitably, this ambitious undertaking would occupy the strategic focus of the portfolio in the years to come, and I hope that the foundation set this term would help facilitate that process. To this end, I sought to build upon previous methodologies of garnering student opinions through the Student Satisfaction Survey and Dialogue Session – furthermore, new avenues such as the Student Leaders’ Symposium were created. Consequently, much is done to ascertain ways that would allow the Association to move beyond garnering student concerns, towards anticipating them. The numerous initiatives taken by this portfolio throughout the term have always placed student empowerment as an endgame. The preliminary stages, which were attempted at this year, sought to promote more fluidity in terms of information, both upward and downward, through the numerous hierarchies of the university. As such, the three aforementioned events were by and large experiments to determine the most effective manner of promoting communication between the student body and school administrators. STUDENT SATISFACTION SURVEY The Student Satisfaction Survey is an annual exercise conducted to refresh SMUSA on the

pertinent issues that students grapple with, as well as grasp the general student sentiment on university life as a whole. Conducted over two weeks, the results were published at the conclusion of the survey. Moreover, the survey results were analysed and presented to then President Howard Hunter for discussion. STUDENT LEADERS ’ SYMPOSIUM The Student Leaders’ Symposium sought to be an avenue for Constituent Bodies (CBds) and CCA leaders to table student issues with senior school administrators such as then President Howard Hunter, Dean of Students Prof Low Aik Meng, and the respective heads of the student offices. It was hoped that a combination of the direct level of interaction along with a more diverse group of student leaders would prove more effective in presenting the urgency and pertinence of student issues to the school administrators. BUSINESS DIALOGUE SESSION The Business Dialogue Session was conducted at the Collaborative Study Area of the Li Ka Shing Library, and sought to solicit the opinions of students specifically on the vendors and business activities of the university. On a more strategic avenue, it was also a pilot test to ascertain the effectiveness of targeting specific issues as opposed to open-ended approaches in order to focus discussion and draw more interest.

REFRAINS The portfolio has only been able to begin what I envision to be a protracted process of attaining true student empowerment. The preliminary stages of promoting communication need to be decisively followed up with an active period of translating the issues raised by this communication into action; given the limited time, the implementation of such a stage would have to be conducted by future batches of the Association. Similarly, such a stage would be plagued by a seeming dearth of interest or faith in the Association. It is with candidness that we observe student interest in these issues diminish across the board – be it from a shift in priorities towards academia, the belief that such issues are insurmountable by the Association, or simply ignorance. Whatever the case is, determining the root of this issue and remedying it remains the lynchpin towards student empowerment.

APPRECIATION Through a tumultuous year of cultivating a nascent portfolio, I would like to extend my appreciation to the students who have shown their continued support through the year by voicing their opinions and suggestions. Also, I would like to thank the ExCo members who have provided the necessary crawlspace for me to establish the boundaries of the portfolio.

Furthermore, my deepest gratitude to friends, CCA mates and project group members who have supported me through this period.

On a final note, I would like to urge all students to show their support for the Association so that we can collectively work towards a common goal as a university.

ooking back upon a year in the SMUSA Executive Committee (ExCo), it has

indeed been a memorable journey for me. My first task as the Events Secretary of SMU Students’ Association (SMUSA) was to organize President S R Nathan’s entourage for Patron’s Day 2010. Themed “A Walk to Remember”, the entourage aimed to portray the journey of a SMU student. This “journey” was presented as a showcase of various CCA segments, befitting the vibrant life that SMU students have

SMUSA Awards Night, was held on 12th March 2010 at SMU’s University Lounge. This signature event served to honor clubs, societies, and student leaders who have contributed significantly to SMUSA and SMU’s student life. More details can be found on page 88. FRESHMEN EXPERIENCE (FE) In its 3rd Year running, Freshmen Experience (FE) 2010 was flanked by the theme – “Transcend”. In line with SMUSA’s vision, FE’s vision was to portray an approachable image to the Freshmen. FE also hoped to imbibe in the Freshmen the idea of work-life integration and the importance of student life. This was achieved through strategic alignment of the four events under FE, namely, Freshmen Teambuilding Camp (Transform), Convocation

(Transit), Vivace (Transfuse) and Freshmen Bash (Transpose). There were also combined marketing effort in every event in support of the others. Through FE, we hoped that freshmen would understand that the Freshmen Experience was just the start of their SMU Experience.

FRESHMEN EXPERIENCE SURVEY

Feedback is also important to us, and we wanted to encourage as many freshmen as possible to voice their opinions and provide constructive feedback for SMU events. Once FE was over, we sent out a survey. Of the survey results, 86% respondents agreed that the FE met their expectations. The average rating for the FE was 7.00 out of 10.00 (10 being most satisfying). Many freshmen also expressed their interests to be part of FE 2011 organizing committee, and perhaps facilitators for the Freshmen Teambuilding Camp 2011. All in all, I believe that such feedback will prove to be useful for the future committees of FE 2011.

ORIENTATION PROMOTION DAY (OPD)

2010 saw a change in terms of matriculation. Instead of a physical matriculation, the school moved to an online matriculation system. This affected our many summer camps as there was a lack of avenue to promote the camps or to make payment. As such, Orientation Promotion Day (OPD) was birthed The FTB 2010 organizing committee went to great lengths to contact the incoming cohort of 1200 freshmen through their call centre, and encouraged them to attend the Orientation Promotion Day. As a result, OPD turned out to be very successful by garnering around 520 additional sign-ups and438 payments. In a rating by camp organizers, OPD actually scored 3.15 out of 5.00 (5 being most useful) for its usefulness. No doubt this event still has areas of improvement; however, OPD will likely be a sustainable initiative under SMUSA for years to come.

CAREER SERVICE TALKS In collaboration with Office of Career Services (OCS), SMUSA also helped coordinate various opportunities to publicize the summer orientation camps. This included letting camp committees set up booths on the days that coincided with the compulsory community service talks attended by freshmen. This helped maximize marketing channels to reach out to freshmen, thus getting more sign ups and payments for the summer camps. With a turnout of 200 per session, the collaboration had faced issues with lack of space due to overwhelming number of camps and events, but definitely aided the organizers to reach out and finally to meet their target number of participants.

SAC EVENTS COMMITTEE In addition, 2010 marked the official creation of the SAC Events Committee that consisted of events directors from various CBds. Although this committee was started only in June 2010, we believe that it has served an important role in coordinating the various events dates and prevent excessive clashes. Deputy Events Secretary MR. JACOB SELVAN MUTHU School of Information Systems |2008

t has been a fulfilling experience performing my role as the Deputy Events Secretary in

SMU Students' Association. Other than supporting the Events Secretary, Mr. Michael Joo in his duties, I also had the opportunity to organize and take charge of some large scale events. Michael has been very supportive in various decisions I have made throughout my term in office. And I have learnt a lot from him as well as the ExCo. OPEN HOUSE Together with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA), I had the honor to be involved in this year's Open House. This year, we had a very fruitful discussion with the staff from OUA and had our own, SMUSA booth during the Open House. Together with the ExCo, we put up a great display of student works which received positive feedbacks from both the public and the school administration. CONVOCATION Together with Ms. Tessa Ang, the Vice President of SMUSA, we jointly produced the pre-formal segment of Convocation 2010 with OSL this year. This being the first time, holding Convocation at Resorts World, there were a lot of changes and through our meetings with the committee, we were able to have the Student Life showcase as a pre-formal segment for 30 minutes. This was also the first time I got to interact with the various CCAs where they came together to put up an outstanding show. SMUSA STAFF TEA SESSION This was the first time a staff tea session was organized for the ExCo to introduce ourselves to the staffs from the school administration. Staff from various offices were invited to the session so that we could share our views on the various portfolios we were working on. PRESIDENT HUNTER ’S FAREWELL I had the opportunity to collate a great collection of photos showcasing student life and the various moments where students demonstrated the spirit

of SMU into an artwork that was presented to President Hunter during his farewell session EVENTS CALENDAR I continued the great work done by my predecessor, Mr. Don Liu by moving the events calendar to an online system where CBds and CCAs were able to update their events and activities real-time. This initiative is slowly, but surely, being adopted by CBds and CCAs. The link is accessible via: www.smusaevents.famundo.com. OTHERS Besides the various events and initiatives, I was also a part of the Freshmen Experience committee. I helped out in the designs of emailers and posters for various events committee recruitments and campaigns. Throughout my term in office, I have gained invaluable experience working with people and would like to take this opportunity to thank some important people, in particular, Ms. Bernie, Prof Low, Mr. Don Liu, and all the staff from the various offices. I hope that the next ExCo would continue to color students life as well as enrich their experience! All the best!

International Students’ Secretary MR. PYINNYAR KYAW

ith the reclassification of International Connections (SMUICON) from a club

under the Arts and Cultural Fraternity into a standing committee under SMUSA, as well as the introduction of International Students’ Secretary (ISS) Portfolio in SMUSA Executive Committee (ExCo), 2010 was an exciting year especially for international students. As the International Students’ Secretary of the 10th SMUSA ExCo, my duties entailed representing the international students in various issues, handling the queries from international students for every aspect of their student life, and providing the strategic direction for SMUICON. The International Students’ Secretary (ISS) also serves as the President of SMUICON and oversees the day to day running of the club.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ’ ORIENTATION BRIEFING During the International Students Dialogue Session in 2009, one major concern raised by the students was the cultural shock and the lack of understanding that international students may have towards Freshmen Experience events of SMUSA especially the Freshmen Teambuilding Camp and Vivace. In response to this, and in collaboration with the International Students’ Unit of OSL, the International Students’ Orientation Briefing was organized on the 23 July 2010.

This session aimed to provide international students with a casual meeting with seniors to clear their doubts about student life as their first point of contact with SMU. It also provided useful information about the Freshmen Experience, thus minimizing the discomfort and cultural shock they would have experienced. This initiative was also utilized as a platform to encourage the freshmen to be more active in Student Life by introducing them to outstanding international students in SMU. The session was attended by more than 60% of the incoming international freshmen, and this initiative will be continued at the start of academic year in future.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ’ TEA SESSION The International Students’ Tea Session was first initiated by the 9th SA ExCo under the portfolio of the 9th Student Initiatives Secretary, Ms. Tan Yin Yin. After the successful session in 2009, this event continued in 2010 under the portfolio of the International Students’ Secretary. Held on 25 October, this year’s tea session aimed to provide international students with the opportunity to express their concerns in various aspects of their student life. The session was also used as a platform to introduce the newly elected International Students’ Secretary, Ms. Wu Kuan Liang. Feedback from the Tea Session was distributed to respective offices and to the incoming Ms. Wu

Kuan Liang to identify and address issues pertinent to international students. BUDDY PROGRAM The successful program underwent many changes in the year 2010 after gathering feedback from both buddies and mentors in early 2010. As such, gatherings were organized at the start of each semester, and in mid-term break to better provide the Buddies with opportunities to bond and to communicate with other buddies.

The gender restriction (male with male and female with female only) was removed, and all mentors could freely state their buddy preferences. Also, Buddies were not restricted to only one mentor. In some cases, three students were assigned three mentors together if the preferences were similar. Priority was also given to students who had just finished an exchange program or were going for an exchange in the coming term. Sign up rates for the Buddy Programs increased significantly, both from incoming students and full-time students willing to become mentors.

THOUGHTS A year has passed, and the experience we have gone through has taught us a lot. I believe the 10th ExCo has done its best for the school. The decisions made were done in the best interest of the students. A school is a place where everyone learns through different experiences, and through ups and downs, I believe all of us have become better people than when we first stepped up to serve. I would like to thank the 10th SMUSA ExCo for sticking by me, through thick and thin. Without them, an enjoyable year would not have been possible. I would also like to sincerely thank those who have voted me into my position, and those who have never stopped supporting me through time. Last but not least, I would also like to express a special thank you to each and every member of the SMU Myanmar Community, Ms. Pham Nguyen Tuong Van, Mr. Wang Yang and a special group of friends, dubbed The Avenue of Stars, for their wonderful support for me personally throughout my time as ISS and President of ICON. It was an experience worthy of the time and effort, and I wish the 11th ExCo and Ms. Wu Kuan Liang a wonderful 2011.

IT Solutions Secretary MR. TOMMY TIEN DEHUI School of Information Systems |2008

s the IT Solutions Secretary, my main responsibility is to represent the student

body to voice out IT related issues to the office of Integrated Information Technology Services(IITS) and to also integrate technology usage with the SAC’s operations, in line with its vision and mission. In the beginning of 2010, SMUSA started a Facebook fanpage to encourage open communication with our fellow peers. This page has recorded more than 1700 “Likes”, with 762 monthly active users. This fanpage has been used to publicise various SMUSA events and serves as a valuable platform to reach out to more students. To keep up with current trends in technology and to cater to the increasing student population in SMU, IITS has various plans to upgrade SMU’s IT infrastructure and services. This upgrading process saw many students providing feedback regarding internet problems to IITS. A couple of internet outages caused disruptions during our academic period. A network slowdown affected the whole university in mid September. As the IT Solutions Secretary, I met IITS to discuss the issue. Further investigation showed that the network slowdown was caused by students using P2P downloading (leeching most of the bandwidth) as well as viruses in the network. Such acts were illegal and IITS was contacted by companies with copyrights agreements. In order to safeguard SMU’s reputation, IITS took a drastic measure by banning these students from using WLAN, SMU’s network.

SENG-CITY SERVICE IMPROVEMENT From student feedback, we have identified two key areas for improvement: mainly to enable easier printing for Mac users and accepting Ezlinks for photocopying. Mac users are now able to input their user names for printing instead of an IP address. Cash cards were once the only payment method for photocopying. Thus, after conveying this feedback to SMU’s printing vendor- Seng-City, the Ezylink Cashless Payment system was implemented. EMAIL MIGRATION In early 2010, IITS decided to migrate the entire university’s email server to Live@Edu. In executing this migration, students were engaged to undergo pilot phases to test the new system’s usability. I helped this migration process by coordinating four testing phases. In addition, there were discussions to address potential issues cropped up during the university-wide migration. The migration was successfully completed by early October 2010. SMUSA WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK As part of SMUSA’s effort to be in line with our vision of being “Approachable”, the SMUSA website was revamped to have a friendlier image. It posted the latest information of the 10th SMUSA ExCo, and hosts various marketing materials and guidelines posted on-line. We also leveraged upon social media through a Facebook fanpage to maintain open communication open with our fellow mates. APPRECIATION To the 10th ExCo, it has been a great pleasure to work with everyone. Being in this team is thus far among my best times in SMU, I would not want to change anything even if I have had the chance to serve another term. Thank you for the great memories. To the 11th ExCo, this path is going to be tough. Be prepared and stay focus. Never give up, even when you fall, get up and continue on. All the best for 2011!

tepping into office a year back, I understood that the nature of the Student

Initiatives Portfolio was not just about providing mentorship and necessary resources to students but also to fill up gaps between other portfolios in SMUSA. Enjoying the greatest flexibility and less defined tasks amongst the secretaries in SMUSA, I saw myself as a supporting member of the ExCo to my fellow members and also a leader in my own portfolio. To students, I would be the bridge and key to resources and offices to carry out constructive projects initiated by them. To fellow SMUSA EXCO, I would be the helpline to fill up the gaps. L IBRARY SATISFACTION SURVEY AND CAMPAIGN Being the place with the highest student traffic each day, our overcrowded library faced various issues. Problems like excessive hogging of seats, undesirable noise level and littering were challenges faced by our library management over the years. To provide a learning environment that is conducive for project discussions and readings, the library management collaborated with the Student Initiatives Secretary to launch a small campaign to remind library users of the gracious behavior expected in the library, the Students were also empowered to stand up against inconsiderate library users.

This collaboration was an initiative that occurred after a 2 week survey about the library’s noise level showed a general dissatisfaction among students about the library. In this initiative, encouraging messages were written on post-its and were pasted around the prime areas in the library to subtly remind students that they all share the same facilities and should treat the library like their homes. The concept was adapted from a blogger, http://www.thingsweforget.blogspot.com who pastes post-its containing inspirational messages around Singapore as he commutes. The idea was to prevent being direct and forceful on students on what are the actions desired from them, but empower them to judge for themselves what was the right behavior.

PAINT A PILLAR 2010- I ’M UNIQUE! Stepping into its 3rd year as a student initiated project, Paint-A-Pillar, this year’s organizing committee had 6 new faces. To encourage and ensure continuity of this initiative which was first set off to encourage free expression among students through art and paintings, the project is

again, carried on under the Student Initiatives Portfolio. This year’s theme is “I’m UNIque!” which called for diversity and an original portrayal of students’ perception towards their university lives and it’s vibrancy. This year, we also witnessed increased support and involvement from students, faculty and offices. INITIATIVES CAMPAIGN The Initiatives Campaign was launched in Term 1 Y2010-11 to call for more voices from the students. Emails were sent to encourage students to feedback and raise their ideas to SMUSA. Responses were rather disappointing, but that would not stop SMUSA from continuing to request for new initiatives from the student populations. FACILITIES We sent a survey to students to obtain reliable statistics on the usage level of facilities by students, especially on the weekends. The survey received overwhelming response of 1042 responses in two days. The result reflected a substantial number of students coming back to the campus on Sundays to catch up their academic work and projects. This survey result was presented to the Office of

Facilities Management, who has kindly extended the air-conditioner operating hours to service on Sundays starting from Week 7 each term in response to this justified facilities usage. WEB PORTAL Few initiatives this year did not pull through ideally. One important project initiated by students was to have an online portal to compile all academic papers and research done by our students over the four years in SMU. This portal would act as a platform for students and professors to profile outstanding academic writings by our own students. It would also support as a portfolio building tool for students. However, due to the technical complexity and sustainability issues, the initiative was not able to pull through this year. THOUGHTS The SMUSA journey was a roller coaster ride, full of ups and downs. There were times when I felt accomplished and there were times when I just fell right down before I could catch a glimpse of the sight around. Still, I would still say it has been a rewarding year in office. There may be constraints and blockages, but what matters is how we overcome them. Sometimes it is also about compromising and deriving an optimal situation that benefits both the school and students. I would like to extend my appreciation to my wonderful fellow SMUSA EXCO members for the great 2010. The experiences we shared cannot be easily expressed with a few words; nevertheless, I would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to each and every one of you because without any one of you the dynamics of the committee would have been different. Our unique personalities have shaped what we are today. To the 11th SMUSA ExCo: I believe all of you will continue the spirit of empowering students despite not having a Student Initiative Portfolio this coming term. Hope you would enjoy the SMUSA experience as much as I did.

~ Mother Teresa tarting this journey, I knew it would be a tireless one – a tireless act of giving,

contributing and sacrificing. Yet, like how a smile is the beginning of love, sometimes the transformational effect, something small, has is overlooked. Therefore, be it the small changes made, I always have faith that I am taking a step in the right direction, with the aim of doing everything I can to improve the welfare of students and further their interests. Constantly meeting with constraints, the path of change and initiatives was definitely scattered with their obstacles and roadblocks. My Welfare Committee and I, however, remained determined to expand the reach and extent of our welfare efforts. Though the year, we added two self-initiated events and played Santa when we answered the wishes/requests of students. WELFARE PACKAGES

Frolick ice-cream and the signature SMUSA ‘Mug here’ mugs were met with a crowd as teasers and Facebook created a hype that got students echoing ‘SMUSA loves me’ as they walked away happily with all the yummy yogurt ice-cream and goodies in hand. The April’10 Exam Welfare Package giveaway experienced the longest queue SMUSA ever had for welfare packages to date.

Missed the Frolick and Exam Welfare Packages every semester? To reach out to more students – especially those who had always been missing it every study break, we brought the welfare packages to week 12. This was to the delight of many students who have never received a welfare package. The Famous Amos cookies, notebooks and post-its brought a smile to the many students as it came as a form of encouragement during their hectic preparations for presentations and the upcoming exams. Nametent Drive NAMETENT DRIVE Incorporating the characteristic taglines messages of the Welfare Committee, this year’s name tents built on a theme of students being the ‘Star who stands out’, with the intention of urging students to stand out and make a difference. Budget-wise measures were also taken by linking up with the school CBDs to print the name tents to prevent wastage from duplicate printing that happened in past years.

NAMECARD DRIVE

This year, we continued to help make it simpler for students print their standardized SMU namecards – just having to register online. Five hundred sets of namecards were printed, providing ease to students. VITAMIN ’S DAY

Noticing that many students have been falling sick during the hectic school term, my concerned ExCo wanted to let students know that we genuinely care for their health. A week’s dose of vitamins that was sponsored by Nurturale, were thus given out to students to cheer them along and help them keep going. PREFERENTIAL CAR PARK FEES The news of the introduction of a registration fee for preferential parking in the university car park was met with a great uproar. Many students were displeased with the high registration fees that they were supposed to pay. An informal survey was quickly done to get a sense of the concerns students had, and a meeting with the Leasing Business Unit (LBU) that was in charge of the car park fees was set to relate the students concerns and negotiate an outcome that would be better for both the students and administrative offices. The fee was reduced from a biannual payment to an annual payment, and to a nominal sum. HOT WATER DISPENSERS Drinking cold water to drown a cough or despite feeling cold already? We have heard your needs for hot water. Therefore, together with the help of Office of Facilities Management (OFM), hot water dispensers have now been installed next to all water coolers.

POWERPOINTS IN STUDY AREAS Unable to reach the power sockets when using GSRs and Project Rooms in the library? Not anymore. After a thorough check of all the rooms, room by room, by my Welfare Committee, and with OFM’s help, all sockets have been refitted to more strategic spots with enough sockets per room. FEMALE SANITARY PAD DISPENSERS IN TOILETS This is for you girls! We have heard your request to have sanitary pad dispensers for your convenience in times of need (you know what I mean!), so we have introduced it in the most used female toilets. MOVIE GALA PREMIERE The unprecedented varsity wide gala premiere was an initiative made possible by working together with sponsorship by Bizcom. The event held at Suntec City, Eng Wah Cinema, treated students to the premiere of Resident Evil: Afterlife, along with a buffet dinner and drinks. It aimed to provide students with an awesomely cool event to take a short break from their school lives and enjoy a movie together with their SMU friends. The success of the event was clearly evident with all 450 tickets being snapped up. We also used this opportunity to thank the students who had contributed greatly to making the Freshman Experience great. THANKS! To my Welfare Committee, thanks for sticking it through thick and thin, your work has been much appreciated by many even if it is sometimes left unsaid. As in the words of Mother Teresa, ‘We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.’ The act of giving you played a role in, made the little significant difference that expresses our care and love. Thank you, my ExCo, you have been a strong moral support through this journey. The friendships that we have made are special and something I will treasure past our working experience. President, Arts and Cultural Fraternity (ACF)

f you’re reading this report, then you’re probably part of a minority. If you can

identify with what we do, then you’re probably part of an even smaller minority. Each year, we write an annual report dictating all that we have done for the year in our leadership positions. Yet, one might ask if we have done substantial things in our term, would we really need an annual report for the student population to know what we are doing? Students who have this line of thought often dismiss such annual reports as a charade, and believe that every year the quality of student leadership must be declining.

The truth is that most of what we do is behind-the-scene work, work that goes unnoticed in the face of the changing semesters. This work is known as governance, which entails things like helping to negotiate the setting of SMUBE ratecard, constitutional reforms like including CCA presidents in the election of the new ACF president and more that you can read below. The nature of these measures is that they are not highly visible to the school population, as much of governance involves not sudden big acts of petitioning for a certain cause, but more of administrative and seemingly mundane work.

So do take a bit of your time to read this annual report, understand what the various student leaders and their committees have been up to, and maybe one day the majority of SMU students would be picking up a copy of the SMUSA annual report to read, and they would smile understandingly at their student leaders as they emerge from a meeting room.

OUR MAIN OBJECTIVES THIS YEAR § To raise more awareness about ACF among

the school population. § To improve procedures within ACF.

ACF SIGNATURE EVENTS

ARTS CAMP 2010 – GLITCH! Arts Camp 2010 was helmed by Events Manager, Vanessa Huang. The 2nd Arts Camp in 2009 was a resounding success despite the H1N1 epidemic outbreak, giving the incoming freshmen a taste of the Arts Community in SMU. This year, Arts camp was organized with the same objectives of letting the freshmen experience art forms offered by ACF clubs and also providing ACF clubs a platform to recruit new members. Relationships were formed between the clubs as they worked hand-in-hand together with the fraternity to make Arts Camp 2010 yet another success. Arts Camp 2010 was entitled “Glitch!” This year, Arts Camp was a 3 days 2 nights camp which was held on campus, featured the following activities

-­‐ Workshops and performances by 19 ACF clubs, an increase from 2009

-­‐ Night games around art venues around SMU, in an effort to expose the freshmen to the vibrant art scene

-­‐ Mass wet arts game -­‐ Arts bash, a continuance from 2009, a night of

entertainment, stage games and celebration at SMU SOE Multi Purpose Hall L7

-­‐ Overall arching storyline which linked the marketing concept together with the activities of the camp

-­‐ Musical production on the last day by freshmen held at the ACC

Publicity for this year’s Arts Camp 2010 proved to be quite a challenge as all matriculation was done online, thus depriving us of an important avenue to promote our camp to the incoming freshmen. However, w ith the help of the CSP talk days and our marketing methods, we were oversubscribed

and managed to hit our target of 120 participants, a significant increase of nearly 40% as compared to Arts Camp 2009. Overall, Arts Camp was a success, as we not only managed to cater to a larger number of freshmen; we also managed to include more ACF clubs.

EVE 2010 EVE, a cocktail event organized by the ACF, is held annually to celebrate the arts in SMU as well as to forge a closer knit family within the 27 clubs and societies under the ACF. It was the last of the ACF trilogy and we felt that it was apt to close off the ACF experience with a cocktail appreciation night.

Eve 2010 was held at a 2 storey event space in Klapsons, the Boutique Hotel, this year we decided to improve on the awards ceremony during the event and thus remodelled and formalized the entire process. After careful screening and through a series of internal nominations, we obtained the recipients of the 4 awards as follows:

Most Popular Arts Camp Workshop: Samba Masala Most Number of School-wide Initiatives: Japanese Cultura l Club Best Initiative award: Ba l lare Special Service Award: Broadcast and Enterta inment (SMUBE)

We chose 4 ambassadors from different clubs to be the faces of EVE and these individuals – Ms. Amanda Voon Jian Ping, Ms. Goh Xin Ying, Mr. Melvin Tiong Chee Yen, and Mr. Joshua Jonathan Lim – were chosen for their notable contributions to the SMU arts scene. Having familiar faces campaign for EVE proved to be a good marketing approach as we managed to obtain a higher attendance for the event. We also created buzz through marketing Eve with our ambassador postcards.

The attendance for EVE 2010 totalled up to 230 guests, a notable increase from the 150 in the previous year. Guests included OSL and ACF members, freshmen from Arts camp, and students from the general school population. We also attracted exchange students to our event and through feedback, served to enhance their overall SMU experience.

That being said, Eve 2010 was a great success and it met its overall objective of allowing inter-club interaction and showing appreciation to our ACF clubs. We are confident that through Eve 2010, more of the school population as well as freshmen became aware of the ACF and what we do. ACF GIFTAWAY ACF Giftaway is one of the new initiatives of the 6th Management Committee (MC) in building ACF‘s branding. Striving to increase the visibility and to build the “ACF Culture”, the 6th MC organized a one day goodie bag give-away event, targeted not only at ACF members but the whole school population. ACF Giftaway is part of the ACF ‘trilogy’ of events, with each event encompassed by our very own tagline “Feel it. Love it. Flaunt it”. ACF Giftaway was held on the first week of Term 1 on 17th August 2010, as we aimed to continue the momentum, on awareness of ACF, which was built up in July 2010 through our annual Arts Camp. ACF Giftaway was also organized just before Vivace, so as to introduce freshmen to the Fraternity before they are exposed to the many

ACF s tage performances and booths on Vivace day. The unique concept of this event is that people have to dress up in pink in order to get an ACF T-shirt and customized ACF notebook with a description of all the ACF clubs in SMU and helpful add-ons like a semester timetable. In addition, there was also free cotton candy for everyone, apart from the free goodie bags of course, which were distributed at the atrium of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business. ACF Giftaway received a fantastic response from the school. A lot of SMU students did turn up in pink and the “pinkest” person of the day was awarded a pair of Dr Marten’s boots! ISSUES TACKLED Some of the issues we tackled this year include the settling of SMUBE ratecard, the response to complaints about the noise during Samba Masala practice sessions, the setting up of new sub-clubs and the complications in doing so, and the closing down of stagnant clubs (the club in question was Blurt!). NEW INITIATIVES

STREAMLINING OF PROCESSES We started with improving the processes between clubs and the ACF MC, by including most of our guidelines and related material in a one-stop ACF website. We also came up with a financial checklist and online assets form to help facilitate the respective budgeting and logistical processes. CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM Vital constitutional reforms this year include the formalizing of election processes to include a vote from each club in choosing the new ACF exco that they will work with for their respective term. This is to give clubs a rightful say in the team that will lead them for one entire year and for the ACF MC to convince the clubs that they are worthy candidates in the running. We also set up new standing orders involving the process in setting up of new clubs, closing down of stagnant clubs, and the criteria for standing clubs to qualify as an ACF member club. All these measures aim to serve the student population and clubs more transparently, and ensure that member clubs stay active.

OTHER INITIATIVES Other new initiatives include the procuring of the glass display panel along the concourse for ACF branding, and the setting up of our official Facebook fanpage (as an alumni networking tool as well) as part of our marketing campaign. To help foster stronger bonding among the ACF family, we held what is affectionately known as “Meet the People” sessions, with representatives from various ACF clubs to discuss common issues like Arts Camp, and Arts Festival related questions, and explaining any doubts about the procedures in place for ACF. NEW ADDITIONS TO THE ACF COMMUNITY We have 3 new additions to the ACF community this year: ARDIENTE A club that branched out from Caderas Latinas, Ardiente already has a long standing history of performance and excellence in competitions, and is warmly welcomed as a familiar member of the ACF family.

NACH LE This sub-club under Indian Cultural Society aims to bring Bollywood Dance to the general SMU students, and show how Bollywood Dance can be a distinct new genre of dance. It is also fast becoming another major performing group during school events and gigs.

CROSSROADS The new blues and classic rock club operates under Sound Foundry and aims to provide a different style of music from the usual pop and rock hits we groove to during Starry Night. Watch out for them in their upcoming gigs as well!

President, Special Interest and Community Service (SICS) sodality MS. IRENE ONG Lee Kong Chian School of Business|2008

he past year has been an exciting roller coaster ride for the Special Interest and

Community Service (SICS) sodality. The 3rd Management Committee (MC) managed to overcome setbacks and at the same time scaled greater heights. That being said, I am very impressed with the level of zeal and commitment of the MC. During our term of office, we concentrated on the streamlining of clubs, the formal establishment of administrative procedures for transparency and excellence, the strategic growth and development of clubs to achieve their potential, and encouraging collaborations across clubs for resource sharing and for leveraging on niche competencies. We are thankful to the clubs who have worked closely with us in shaping the SICS sodality and in achieving the directions that we first set out. On behalf of my team, I would like to extend our gratitude to Professor Low, Ms. Bernadette Toh, Mr. Wong Yew Tong, Mr. Lai Chieh Ming, Mr. Tan Kong Soon, Mr. Mohamad Ridzuwan, Mr. James Teo, Mr. Connel Loh Hon Piow and Ms. Ong Juyi for believing in us and giving us invaluable guidance throughout our office term. To the 10th SMUSA Executive Committee (ExCo) and the various Constituent Bodies (CBds), thank you for the support you have given us and for lending your hands during our difficult times. It was truly awesome to have been able to foster a closer bond during our SAC Exchange in Hong Kong and to see that bond strengthened throughout the year.

Not forgetting a bunch of geniuses who played and worked hard in 2010, they are no other than my MC which comprises of Ms. Aw Yihui, Ms. Stephanie Yeo Boon Yee, Mr. Jonathan Tan Wei Loong, Ms. Lee Hongjing, Mr. Teo Zhe Han, Mr. Guo Jinchuan, Ms. Goh Si Hui, Ms. Lua Wen Ting, Ms. Lau Pei En, Mr. Shawn Fong Sai Yean, Ms. See Peiquan, Mr. Adrian Cheng Bingjie, Mr. Tan Jian Wei, Mr. Victor Chan Yi Shun, Ms. Lee Lai Ting and Ms. Ng Jieying. Thank you all for giving your

best and enduring the year with a “nothing is impossible” spirit. You guys rock! Now that we have handed the baton over to the 4th MC, we believe in you like how the others believed in us. It’s your turn now to bring the SICS sodality to greater heights, to achieve what was never imagined before and to redefine student life. I am hereby privileged to present to you the SICS sodality annual report 2010. STRATEGIC DIRECTION

COLLABORATION ACROSS CLUBS/OSL OUTREACH FUND Having two different umbrella groups under the SICS sodality brings with it the challenges of bringing them together as one to portray the SICS sodality identity. The 3rd MC continued the direction of the previous MC in driving collaborations between the special interest clubs and the community service clubs. Clubs were encouraged to brainstorm and execute their ideas through platforms such as the SICS sodality annual presidential summit held for elected members of clubs. Collaborative initiatives were given the incentive of having the 3rd MC’s endorsement in their application to the OSL outreach fund which serves to fund clubs with worthy outstanding projects that impact both student life and the underprivileged in society.

OPENING AND CLOSING OF CLUBS/KPIs There were numerous interviews and sharing sessions with respective clubs at the start of the term to gain an overview of their directions for 2010. Assistance was given to clubs who were

identified to be no n-responsive and SICS sodality stands firm in closing down clubs who fail to abide by the policies set out by SMUSA and SICS. Prospective clubs were required to meet the stringent requirements set out by SICS before being officially recognized. Through active discussions, the 3rd MC worked with individual clubs to agree on key performing indicators (KPIs) which were reviewed at the end of each semester. This helps to ensure accountability in terms of the performance and sustainability of our clubs. RAISING OUR PROFILE As a new CBd running in its 3rd year, the SICS sodality is not as recognized as the other established CBds. Hence, the 3rd MC focused on delivering events that showcase the SICS sodality as well as gaining maximum exposure through school wide participation and marketing efforts. S IGNATURE EVENTS LEADERSHIP SUMMIT The Leadership Summit is held during the start of each term as a platform for the newly elected members of respective clubs to bond, to understand the clubs and their activities in greater depth as well as to strategize directions for their term of office. Other than fun activities, club representatives are grouped together to brainstorm collaborative ideas amongst themselves and it was a good avenue to gather feedbacks from clubs which the MC can work upon. KALEIDOSCOPE CAMP 2010 The SICS sodality Camp was held for the first time since its establishment in 2007. Organizing a camp was never easy but it was especially challenging for the SICS sodality which covers a diverse spectrum of interests. Nonetheless, the 3rd MC took on the challenge with great positivity. The objective of the camp was to introduce students to the SICS sodality and our various clubs. Unlike the other CBds, the SICS sodality did not have a camp in the last two years and this greatly reduced opportunities for freshmen to get to know us. Nonetheless, the camp proved to be successful for a start. We are grateful to the majority of the clubs who worked with us in creating interesting activities for the campers. These clubs were greatly rewarded when a good number of camp participants continued to take part in their club activities after the camp and subsequently ran for ExCo positions within the clubs.

SMU CHALLENGE 2010 SMU Challenge was first initiated in 2008 by the first president of the SICS sodality and this year, the 3rd MC decided take up the challenge to deliver an event that is unique to the SICS sodality. The planning and execution of SMU Challenge 2010 took up almost 10 months with the objective of bringing the SMU community together to do something interesting yet meaningful. This project included various fundraising efforts of student volunteers and visits to the beneficiary’s homes. The project was well supported by both the SMU community and the general public who participated in one way or another.

SMU Challenge 2010 ended with a unique walkathon in which participants carried backpacks filled with food and household items intended for 1000 elderly beneficiaries. Not only was the SICS sodality able to execute the event smoothly, we exceeded the initial objective of raising $50 000 in cash and in kind. The future MC should continue the good work of sustaining the project which aims to bring the SMU community together and impact society in a manner unique to the SICS sodality. APPRECIATION NIGHT 2010 The appreciation night is held annually in recognition of the clubs’ efforts and definitely a channel for the 3rd MC to express our gratitude to the clubs who have been co-operative and outstanding for the past one year. NEW INITIATIVES

KPIs AND MEMBERSHIP The sustainability and growth of clubs were viewed with great importance during our term of office. We believe in deliv ering quality student life through increasing the relevance of our clubs towards students. Meet-ups were arranged between clubs and the MC to seek a mutual agreement on the crafted Key Performance Indexes (KPIs). The KPIs were then signed between both parties and would be reviewed annually. The KPIs helps to monitor the club’s performance and growth which in turn drives excellence.

SPONSORSHIP DIRECTOR We welcomed a new portfolio into the SICS sodality this year - the sponsorship director - who is in-charge of establishing a database of contacts who are interested in the various club’s events and contacts that are catered to the general needs of clubs such as apparels and catering. Through this, we created a “preferred” vendor database which links clubs with companies which provide good bargains for students. In the long run, we hope for our clubs to be self-sustaining through sponsorship efforts. POST-MORTEM REPORTS FROM CLUBS For an objective judgment on events, the 3rd MC requested post-mortem reports from clubs for their events, especially those which required significant funding from SMUSA. These reports serve as a basis for the SICS sodality to justify events based on results and popularity. These reports also provide a reference for future MCs to understand clubs’ events and the learning points from each event that has been organized. FINANCE The finance team carried out meet-up sessions with every single club under the SICS sodality umbrella twice before the budgeting period to ensure that clubs budgeted properly, and to advise them on large budget items. These meet-ups served as the first budget cut by the SICS sodality before submitting the clubs budget to the SAC. The finance team decided to cap the funding amount for each OCIP project to $100 in terms of their logistical needs. The 3rd MC agreed that OCIP should not be funded maximally by the school but should be largely funded through channels such as

sponsorship and fundraising. This will lighten the burden on the SICS sodality’s budget as we had to support 8 community service clubs. FUTURE OUTLOOK To achieve excellence and synergy for clubs under SICS sodality, with a passionate driving force, for an all rounded student life.

2010. This report is a documentation of what SMUX has accomplished over the past year. More importantly, it is the testimonial of each and every SMUX member’s effort and contribution, which cannot be detailed completely in the following pages. If you wish to find out more, do refer to our 2010 version of the Annual Report.

On behalf of the 9th Crew and the six Team Executive Committees, I would like to thank each and every member who had helped in terms of not only in the capacity of an organizing committee member, but also as a helper as well as participant. I would also like to use this opportunity to thank the school officers as well as our business development partners for your continuous support in our ventures. It was the combined effort from everybody that had made “Adventure Fun Family” possible in SMUX.

As we celebrate SMUX’s first decade of inception, let us not forget our humble beginnings and the sacrifices that everyone has made in order to make today’s accomplishments worthwhile.

ADVENTURE RACE 2010 Due to good responses last year, it was the 2nd year that SMUX organized the SMU Adventure Race (AdRace). The introductory one-day multi-

disciplinary race challenged participants through a combination of outdoor adventure elements across different stations in Singapore. This year’s participation saw slightly more than half of last year’s, and yet we managed to achieve success in terms of its scale of operations and attraction of a broad range of outdoor enthusiasts across the Novice and Open categories. In addition, many participants gave feedbacks that they enjoyed the experience of AdRace 10 and they are looking forward to AdRace 2011. Do look out for a whole new experience in adventure racing in 2011!

SMUX CAMP 2010 Held yearly to expose incoming freshmen to the plethora of outdoor and adventure sports that SMUX offers, SMUX Camp 2010, themed “X, it’s what you make out of it”, was a one roaring success.

The camp incorporated six main activities which each represented the six SMUX teams: Biking, Diving, Kayaking, Trekking, Skating and XSeed. As SMUX Camp continues to be the first contact point between SMUX and incoming freshmen, we are glad that many of its participants return to participate in subsequent SMUX events and as members of the organizing committees. More importantly, through the camp, freshmen find themselves new interests, new friends and new family. NIGHTBIKE 2010 This is an annual event organized by SMUXtremists after the SMUX Camp. The theme for this year’s Nitebike was ‘Bike 4 Your Life’ and it was held from 28th to 29th August 2010. The event’s 144 slots were filled up in a mere 5 hours upon the opening registration. NEW INITIATIVES

RESTRUCTURING OF THE CREW As part of the 9th Crew’s objectives to streamline operations, the Crew was downsized from 15 to 14 positions. The position of Human Resource/

Welfare Manager was removed from the Crew. The Honorary General Secretary undertook the role and responsibilities of the Human Resource portfolio, while the Welfare portfolio was taken up by the Operations Director (OD). We believe that this streamlining initiative will reduce any duplication of role and facilitate better integration of administrative information and processes. The positions of the Operations Director were further classified as “Internal” and “External”. Due to an increasing number of stakeholders that SMUX has, the position of OD External was created to assist the President in managing these external stakeholders. An example of the OD External’s job scope will be to maintain communication with the Safety and Student Leadership Cluster of OSL in order to ensure that the safety level of SMUX events is not compromised. HUMAN RESOURCE PORTAL This year, we have streamlined the operational procedures with regards to human resource matters by having our own SMUX Human Resource Portal. The HR Portal features a unique membership registration portal to minimize the chances of missing data or data errors while exporting and importing of information between different systems. An Alumni Update function is also included in the portal. Unlike in the previous years, HR manager has to manually filter out members who have graduated and become Alumni of SMUX. With this function, the Alumni membership list will be automatically updated. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT The SMUX Business Development Contacts database is a melting pot of contacts gathered from all over SMUX into one central location. Such an initiative avoids the painful process of having to reinvent the wheel of sourcing for contacts time and again every time a new team steps up to the task. From teams’ contacts to potential event sponsors to even contacts for sourcing for vehicles, the database is as comprehensive as it gets.

In line with placing the interest of the SMU community above our own, we shared contacts that would be useful to other CBds, such as Lynk Biotech with SSU. Such facilitated partnerships ended up benefitting the SMU Aquathlon Club (SMURTS) and SMU Dragon Boat (SMUDB) as they were roped in to test if product is effective and explore the possibility of OSL bulk purchasing

the product for all athletes. ASSET UTILIZATION RATE Another new initiative that was only finalized and implemented in late November 2010, the asset utilization rate’s initial objective was to provide a better quantitative justification for each specific asset purchase during each semester’s budgeting period. As it was tedious to track utilization to the specific asset itself, SMUX tracked the figures by the class of assets.

ASSET S CONDITION TEST To shift the emphasis on the physical count alone to checking the condition of asset during asset audits, we have created an Asset Condition Test together with all 6 teams Logistics ICs for all classes of assets. It is similar to a litmus test, and comprises of three colours: green, yellow, and red. With this test, each team would be able to use this document as a guide and evaluate if an asset is still safe to use, or is damaged and needs to be disposed. In this way, this test has greatly facilitated the conduct of asset audit and aid in budgeting decisions. MILESTONES

VELOFILES (BIKING) Team Velofiles comprising of 6 SMUX bikers embarked on a month-long 2010km cycling expedition. The route took them from Phuket all the way down to Singapore. The event aimed to raise the awareness of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games as well as to commemorate SMU and SMUX 10th year anniversary. It also aimed to inspire people to challenge their limits and pursue their dreams. As a result of the trip, we are glad to see a closer relationship being fostered among SMUX, OSL and the Safety Centre as we worked closely together to make this trip a success.

KOREA SKI TRIP (XSEED): IN COLLABORATION WITH YMCA This is a landmark activity in Xseed’s calendar, as it is the first time the team is undertaking an event to go skiing; literally “Discovering without Boundaries”, this endeavor to Korea will be the first time the team has stepped out of its usual Singapore-Malaysia range. Encompassing Skiing and Snowboarding, this trip was co-organized with YMCA which worked with their counterparts in ChunCheon. The visit to Daemyong Ski Resort, a home stay at the nearby ChunCheon area and nights spent in Seoul allowed the participants to bond well with one another, and these definitely made the trip a memorable one. JOHOR LAMA EXPEDITION (KAYAKING) Johor Lama is SMUX Kayaking Team’s pioneer cross border expedition, successfully completed in the summer of 2010. The 60km 2-way expedition brought the participants through both sea and river kayaking. REEF ALERT 2010 (DIVING) The signature SMUX Diving conservation project was once again oversubscribed, with all 20 slots filled up by diving enthusiasts. The first to be featured in a regional diving magazine, Reef Alert 2010 also went to the heartlands this year, staging the exhibition at the Woodlands Regional Library.

ear 2010 has been a wonderful year for sports at SMU during which it brings our

sporting family one step forward reflected through both sporting excellence and holistic development. Through the sporting fra ternity’s pursuit for sporting excellence, we have witnessed easily one of the best years in SMU’s sporting history, achieving success in both national and international stages, increasing the visibility of the SMU brand name. 2010 was also filled with exciting events and new initiatives promoting work play balance in SMU through sports.

The SMU Sports Union (SSU) 6th Management Committee (MC) had a meaningful term of office serving our sportsmen and the student population of SMU. Having been inspired by the SSU motto, “Might of one, Strength from all”, the 6th MC agreed on promoting a sporting family focusing on identity and relationships. The vision set by the 6th MC was “To inculcate a vibrant sporting culture in SMU, in the pursuit of excellence and holistic development”. Many of the decisions made and initiatives undertaken were deliberated under the vision and objections we have set. Bearing a long-term orientation, the 6th MC has recognized the importance of progressiveness and sustainability. We have set out to lay a firm foundation for the future leaders to build upon, progressing along with time from one batch to the next. Many of our plans will not yield instant

results, but we hope the effects will be seen several years from now. The 6th MC has worked hard to increase the branding of sports at SMU through several initiatives – New logos have been imprinted in our gym to increase the awareness of our 41 sports clubs; pictures of our athletes paved the corridors of our SMU gym thus increasing the general profile of our athletes and in recognition of their efforts, and newsletters and special sports features have been sent out in recognition of the efforts our sportsmen and clubs have devoted to sports. The 6th MC also had the goal of improving relationships both between SSU and its sports clubs and interclub relationships. These were done through the Club Buddy System and the club support point system. These measures were effective in inculcating greater ties and identity and will serve as the building blocks of our sports at SMU. With these initiatives in place, the SMU Sporting Fraternity is looking to grow exponentially through the years. S IGNATURE EVENTS

SPORTS AWARDS NIGHT 2010 saw SSU’s Annual Sports Awards Night held in a refreshing and spectacular fashion. For the first time ever, the event shifted from the traditional venue of our SOA Auditorium to the energizing Butter Factory. The Guest-of-Honour for the event was our friendly Dean of Students, Professor Loh Aik Meng. Our event witnessed a recorded participation of over 200 sportsmen. The

prestigious Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year were awarded to Mr. Koh Seng Leong (Sailing) and Ms. Siobhan Tam (Sailing) respectiv ely. The coveted SMU Sports Team of the year award went to SMU DragonBoat for their prodigious performances throughout the entire season. The celebrations, which lasted to the wee hours, had no doubt created a kindred belonging in our fraternity!

WAIKIKI Waikiki remains the biggest and most exciting installment of SSU’s flagship events. Waikiki 2010 was held at Tanjong Beach and drew a crowd of almost 1000 participants. Participants basked in the sun and enjoyed many competitive beach games. Coupled with good food and the company of awesome friends, Waikiki 2010 was truly an event that achieved its goal in promoting a balanced lifestyle through sports.

SPORTS LEADERS CAMP Sports Leaders Camp is one of the signature events which SSU organizes. We were pleased to gather leaders from 40 sports clubs for 2 days. The ideas and discussions bounced served to unite the sporting fraternity in actions and thoughts. Feedback gathered showed us that this Camp had indeed served its purpose well and will continue to be an essential platform for sporting leaders to come.

SPORTS CAMP- SMOOVE! SSU’s Sports Camp 2010 lived up to its name of being one of the most popular events within SMU. This event saw such heavy oversubscription that registration was closed one month prior to the event. Our event saw a participation of 200 incoming freshmen and our entire sporting fraternity collaborated hand in hand to make this event a success. The freshmen were treated to a wide variety of sports, performances and more significantly, an insight to the sporting culture of SMU. It brings me great pleasure in saying that almost 90% of the freshmen who participated in Sports Camp joined a sports club subsequently. They form the new generation of pride and glory that will do SMU Sports proud in the future.

SPORTS FIESTA Sports Fiesta in our opinion fell under expectations. We saw a decrease in number of participants yet again following similar situations in the past years. Admittedly, the novelty of having an event where people come together to play different sports was indeed losing its draw. Even with the introduction of the new “funfair-like” stalls operated by a few sports clubs, the hype that was generated was not enough. Our wish is that the new MC could bring back the wow-factor of this event and attract the “smuggers” onto campus green. MILESTONES

CLUB BUDDY SYSTEM For the Club Buddy System especially, in order to ensure continuity, a database was put in place. Its objectives were clear and every member of the ‘communication’ being a cornerstone of our working philosophy, we are happy with the final results at the end of our term in office. Our visits to the clubs also gathered very favorable responses. Many clubs expressed pleasant surprise at our initiative to reach out to them on the grounds. As a result, the ties between clubs and SSU grew closer and we were able to better allocate funds and provide solutions to their problems to the best of our capabilities. SSU WEBSITE One of our pillars of involvement with the SSU clubs is communication. As such, our committee felt it was integral to have a robust online portal where messages could be broadcasted effectively and processes streamlined.

In the 3rd quarter of 2010, we formed a team of 4 people to work on the website. Initially, we were in talks with Funkygrad, an online portal and content engine for local tertiary students. Although the deal did not come to fruition because of excessive commitment required by the sponsors, the functionalities for the site were straightened out in the process such as broadcasting of fixtures and results, events registration, upload of administrative procedures, personal club page for marketing purposes etc. Our envisioned portal was presented during the SSU clubs Presidents’ Meeting and it was met with much support from our Presidents. We have since handed on the project to our new MC who has elected an IT director to take charge of the site’s implementation and maintenance, and the beta version of the website is planned to be up by end of January 2011. SPONSORSHIP TEMPLATE As part of SSU's efforts to empower their member clubs to fund and sustain club events, the Corporate Communications Department has created a sponsorship template exclusively for these clubs. SSU envisages that this template, which contains detailed information on how and what information to present to sponsors, will enable the sports clubs to effectively communicate their needs across to sponsors APPRECIATION There are many people who have paved the way for such a successful year. The accomplishments could not have been possible without them. I would first like to thank the Office of Student Life (OSL) and various school offices that have supported us greatly and have provided the funding and opportunities to accomplish many of our objectives. Special thanks to Roy Chua, SSU’s OSL manager, whose empowerment and support have been the building blocks of success. We would also like to thank the SSU 5th MC who have guided and taught us the ropes. Lastly, the 6th MC would like to thank the SMU sportsmen and students who have supported and helped us throughout the year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the SSU 6th MC – Mr. Chian Kai Hong, Ms. Ng Bao Qi, Ms. Tan Si Han, Mr. Lionel Lim Zhen Wei, Mr. Jonathan Kok Jiancong, Mr. Liu Xing Hui, Mr. Mr. Poon Wei Xian, Ms. Rynette Joyce Tan Ming Li, Mr. Chen Xuan Wei, Mr. Francis Chan Wei Wen,

It has definitely been a pleasure working with each and every one of them and this experience has been an unforgettable one.

HAT A YEAR.

2010 kicked off with 4 simple objectives in mind for the Accounting Society (Asoc), namely to encourage a strong school spirit, to promote integration within the school, to foster a cult ure of receptivity, and to boost the committee’s credibility with stakeholders.

To those ends, the 6th Management Committee (MC) would like to thank everyone for their relentless support for our projects, unwavering beliefs in our goals, and for the spontaneous craziness that spiced up a wonderful year!

YEAR IN REVIEW In line with SMU’s tenth year anniversary celebrations, Asoc had a most happening year. ASoc and its community started semester two with a festive pomp through the ASoc traditional Chinese New Year Dinner.

On the Professional Development (PD) front, we organized Breakfast with Professors – an initiative to bring the faculty closer to the accounting student population, company visits to the various big accounting firms, and invited speakers to share industry insights with our students.

During the preparation for the final examination, our Welfare team gave out stationeries along with some candies and chocolates for the accounting students And while the graduating batch closed an unforgettable chapter of their SMU life with a bang at the ASoc Gala Dinner – a classy evening held at BaliBali – the ASoc family also warmly welcomed the incoming freshmen.

The Freshmen Orientation Projects consist of a 4 days 3 night camp, and a Social Night, which were filled with fun and also encouraged the nurturing of lasting friendships.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PD events took centre stage in the latter half of the year. The Industry Talk provided accountancy students with the opportunity to interact with industry practitioners and to learn more about career paths which are opened to them, while the ICPAS-SMU Case Challenge supplied a platform for the school’s best to shine, pitting them against competitors from other institutions.

In the sports aspect, ASoc has performed admirably yet again this year, coming out strongly in every competition that we took part in. Living up to our reputation as a soccer powerhouse, we managed to bring the Le Basi Trophy back to where it belongs.

S IGNATURE EVENT

ASOC DAY The oversubscribed ASoc Day was the highlight of the year and the theme for this year was ‘OktoberFest’. Modeled after the German OktoberFest, this event featured live performances, traditional drinking games, and a sumptuous platter of German spreads, such as sausages and pork knuckles. And did we mention the free flow beer? INITIATIVES

ASOC WEBSITE Over the summer, our Creative Solution team, in collaboration with Publications, also unveiled our newly revamped website, boasting a more user-friendly interface and of course, juicy content to keep you reading.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME With the support from the School of Accountancy, we also kicked off the ASoc Mentorship Programme, in which freshmen are grouped together with experienced seniors, to help them navigate through their first year in school.

SOCIAL NIGHT As for the freshmen orientation programme, we also launched the inaugural Social Night, exclusively organized for the freshmen. It aimed to usher the start of their SMU life with a crazy night of revelry and memories. SAY HI TO AWESOME Though the year has barely started, I am proud that the 7th Management Committee has already outlined the direction ahead.

To further integrate alumni members into the folds of the ASoc family, plans are already afoot, for the launch of an Alumni Group, in collaboration with the SMU Alumni Association. Other events in the pipeline include our very first overseas trip to Malaysia. There will also be efforts to bond students together in a much more informal setting. Retaining the usual crazy fun and excitement, this year’s rendition of ASoc Day will also take on a more significant role in the inculcation of SMU values. Last but not least, to Mr. Danial Haris and his MC, I have faith that all of you would bring ASoc to greater heights by delivering ASoc projects and events to an even bigger, more engaging and of course, extremely exciting level! Put simply, 2011 is going to be AWESOME!

ear 2010 has been a remarkable for the SMU Business Society (Bondue). This

year, there were many firsts for BONDUE as the 6th Executive Management Committee (MC) strived to improve the balance among academics, professional development and student life in the Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB). Bondue sought to continue the efforts of the 5th MC to best cater to the needs of all LKCSB students by providing students with more academic and professional development opportunities.

Before I move on to the various initiatives and milestones for Bondue, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the LKCSB deanery, administrative staff and faculty, the LKCSB student clubs, and every student member that have showed their extensive support for all the initiatives that Bondue has ventured into this year.

I would also like to thank and applaud the members of the 6th Management Executive Committee for their commitment, dedication and determination throughout their term in office. To the 7th Management Executive Committee, on behalf of my committee, I wish you all the best in the coming year while you embark on your journey as leaders of the LKCSB.

NEW INITIATIVES

BONDUE NETWORKING NIGHT To aid students in their professional development, Bondue organized its first networking night for business students. The aim of the event was to provide a networking session held under a casual setting between past and present SMU students, with particular emphasis on Finance and Marketing majors. YOPLAIT MARKETING CASE COMPETITION Together with SM4P, the marketing society of SMU, we organized the first marketing case competition for SMU students for Yoplait, a yogurt company. This competition aimed to give marketing students the opportunity to apply the theories learnt in school to practical use.

KNOW THY MAJOR TALKS The Know Thy Major Talks were revamped this year to include the participation of all the major-representative LKCSB student clubs and societies. This first partnership between all the LKCSB clubs and Bondue definitely marked the start of more collaboration to come. WELFARE INITIATIVES This year, Bondue retained our signature Tau Huey giveaway, while at the same time included a selected variety of special products for the business students. These include KOI Bubble Tea, Muffins, and Ice-cream.

BONDUE EVENTS

BONDUE BACK TO SCHOOL PARTY – CLASH! As one of Bondue’s flagship events, Bondue Bash aims to give students the avenue to let their hair down and have fun for a night. This year’s party was entitled “Clash!”, so participants were encouraged to come dressed in mismatched clothing. Bondue also presented our first fashion show during this event using student and professor models. “Clash!” was successful in providing students with fun in the midst of networking. BONDUE CAMP 2010 – CIRQUE DE BONDUE Exclusively for business undergraduates, the response to this year’s Bondue camp was overwhelming as the camp was oversubscribed very much before the camp. Bondue camp aims to smoothly integrate freshmen into the school community by allowing them to interact with each other and forge friendships through fun and games.

This year’s theme followed the theme of a circus, in which teams were named after circus characters and programmes. This was certainly a memorable experience for business freshmen as they embark on their journey into the next phase of their life – in a university.

VEGAS NIGHT 2010 Another flagship event of Bondue is Vegas Night 2010, a tradition passed down since the 4th MC. Vegas Night speaks for itself as it allows students to immerse themselves in casino games, without the element of financial gain. Instead, students would accumulate their winnings in chips and exchange them in return for exciting prizes.

APPRECIATION NIGHT 2010 Bondue treated everyone who has helped us throughout our term to a sumptuous buffet and prizes during our annual Appreciation Night 2010. LKCSB DIALOGUE SESSION WITH BBM STUDENT LEADERS BBM student leaders were invited to a dialogue session together with faculty and administrative staff to discuss the ways that the business school can improve and better meet the needs of the students. FUTURE OUTLOOK A primary learning point for the next executive management committee would be to ensure that they maintain a constant two-way communication between Bondue, its internal stakeholders and its external stakeholders. Moving forward, Bondue should continue to be the voice for all business students, fighting to ensure that the rights for all business students are protected as well as to continue providing students with relevant opportunities to have a well-rounded experience and education in SMU.

he most fulfilling experiences one can ever ask for. The road was at ti mes bumpy, threatening to throw us off -track,

but I am proud to say that the 7th Oikos ExCo did our very best and saw a great year of successful events and initiatives, some of which would be continued as an Economics tradition – the Oikos Booksale, Oikos Bidding Survey and Oikos Networking night.

To our Oikos family, we hope that we have helped to create a positive difference in your SMU life, in one way or another. The 7th Exco has certainly come a long way and learnt a lot during the course of our term, and we sincerely thank all of you for entrusting us to be your voice, and for all the encouragement towards our efforts in enhancing the Oikos student life. OIKOS EXAM WELFARE DRIVE The Exam Welfare Drive is carried out every semester with the aim of encouraging and motivating our Economics Students for their exam preparation.

In November 2009, the welfare package included Post-it pads and notebooks, sponsored by the Singapore Press Holdings and Asia Pacific Breweries respectively, as well as soya bean curd and grass Jelly giveaways. In March 2010, the package boasted the unique Oikos plastic casing file, with a whole range of stationeries from Post-it, pens, to white board markers. CHINESE NEW YEAR LUCKY DIP AND GIVEAWAYS To celebrate the Chinese New Year with our fellow Economic Students, we hold a lucky dip with a plethora of gifts ranging from pineapple tarts, nestum cookies to yam cookies and mandarin

oranges. The highlight of the event was the chance for six students to win our top prizes of home abalone and other exquisite Chinese delicacies such as Buddha Jump Over The Wall, which were all kindly sold to us at a lower price by New Moon. NEW INITIATIVES

OIKOS BOOKSALE (JANUARY AND AUGUST 2010) This was a pilot scheme that the 7th exco initiated after much brainstorming and feedback obtained from the Economics population. This booksale creates an avenue for economics students to

purchase/sell academic books prior to the start of the new term. This scheme has since proven to be a success ever since the collection of over 2,000 books at the inaugural event. Completely non-profit, the book sale saw over $2,000 worth of transactions during semester 1, comprising of both Economics textbooks and those from other modules, and in semester 2, over $3000 worth of transactions.

OIKOS NETWORKING NIGHT Another pilot initiative implemented by the 7th ExCo, this proved to be an inaugural success. Distinguished attendees include Bobby Mariano – Previous Dean of the School of Economics, SMU professors from the Business, Accounting and Economics faculties, School of Economics alumni members as well as guests from the Competition Commission of Singapore and Alumnus. The event proved to be an ideal platform for economics students to interact with both faculty and alumni, most of whom either had vast prior working experience or whom were currently working professionals. As such, students also got to learn more about the fields and industries in the business sector, as well as gain insight on potential jobs/vocations which they were interested in.

ECONS HOMECOMING 2010 This was initially themed as Intermezzo by all the previous batches of Economics ExCo. However the 7th ExCo wanted to revamp the event and inject new life and vibrancy to commemorate the end of our office term. As such, the objective was to establish a day of fellowship where Economics students, past and present, gather to celebrate the faculty’s 8th anniversary. Set as an intimate affair, the Economics family will gather for an evening of fun and celebration. Styled as a homecoming occasion, the Economics alumni can return to their alma mater; where they catch up with their professors and fellow schoolmates over dinner. Aside from a splendid buffet spread, video montages were also shown featuring the student candidates running for the Oikos 2010 elections, as well as a farewell message from the 7th ExCo to the student population. We also engaged SMU SoundFoundry to provide a band for music performance at the event. Coupled with photo taking, the writing of well-wishes and a

splendid location set in the University Lounge, the event proved to be a success and a final stamp on a excellent office term by our committee. BOSS BIDDING SURVEY Oikos took on the liberty to do up its very own Economics survey during the course of boss bidding to find out what were the modules that were high in demand but low in supply. We presented the findings to the office and new classes and places were open and released. This survey was started by the 7th and will continue to be used in the coming years. OIKOS IDENTITY STICKER & OIKOS NEWSLETTER Aimed to keep Economics student abreast with Oikos’ events, we started the Oikos newsletter, giving students an overview on the past events as well as the upcoming events. Also, in order to help Economics students identify themselves as a member of Oikos, the 7th Exco designed and printed the Oikos Identity Sticker.

ECONOMICS FRESHMEN CAMP/BASH The 7th ExCo continued to uphold the tradition passed down by the 6th ExCo in the form of interviewing and recruiting from the year 2 student population to plan and oversee the implementation of the camp and bash event. This was to train up and identify potential candidates to takeover our role as well as to give the student population a greater hand in interacting with the incoming freshmen as well as developing a holistic sense of belonging amongst the students. employees PERSONAL MESSAGE I would like to thank the school for giving us the opportunity to serve our office term in SMU Information Systems Society. Reflecting on the past office term, the 6th SISS Management Committee (MC) had definitely grew, in terms of leadership as well as the passion to serve the student body of the School of Information Systems. I sincerely hope that we managed to meet the expectations of the students and strived to fight for their rights in terms of welfare and academia. 2010 may not been the year for all, but I am glad that the 6th Management Committee had

successfully handed over to the 7th Management Committee. DETENTION CLASS PARTY - INVESTITURE 2010 This is an event to thank the 5th Management Committee for their past year of hard work as well as to introduce the 6th Management Committee. It was definitely a good time to allow the SIS community to bond within and to have a great time before work start to pile up. CHINESE NEW YEAR, HARI-RAYA, MID-TERM, DEEPAVALI AND FINAL EXAMINATION WELFARE TREATS Welfare is a segment we particularly pay a lot of emphasis with. I am pleased to say that throughout our term of service, we had given away cultural delicacies, ice cream, hot Nescafe coffee, apple strudel, Famous Amos cookies and stationeries. FLAUNT-IT 2010 Currently running in its 4th year, Flaunt-IT 2010 has become an SISS signature event. Understanding the need of our students, SISS’s Flaunt-IT delivers a high-quality professional makeover and photography service to SMU students at a minimum fee. Continually seeing improvements over the years, Flaunt-IT 2010 was definitely larger in scale and it managed to cater to and capture the needs of a much wider audience. Surprise elements were seeded into the programme to have a university-wide school model challenge. METAMORPHOSIS 2010 – FRESHMEN ORIENTATION CAMP This camp is an induction programme for the freshmen of School of Information Systems that allowed them to build and foster friendship among themselves and the seniors. This year’s metamorphosis was definitely a roaring success with huge sponsorship deals from NCS and Standard Chartered Bank. GLOW – FRESHMEN HOMECOMING In conjunction with the vision to foster a vibrant family, Glow 2010 served as the initial bond between freshmen and seniors, both local and international students as they join the family with a huge party to break the ice and get-together after MetamorphoSIS Camp. As such, to deal with this problem at its grassroots level, SISS initiated a new Academic Reference Committee (ARC) in 2009, formed by 8 students from every batch nominated by their diverse background to provide our Deans and Faculties the firsthand account on their concerns in a meeting which is held twice a term. S ISS .SG SISS.SG enables external parties to find out more about the SMU Information Systems Society. Under the maintenance of the 6th Management Committee, the website went through a transformation of identity. Not only does it deliver what SISS is all about, it also communicates with the student body in terms of active participation in the events and online polls. It further allows prospective students to understand the life of a SIS student and the types of events held in campus.

hen the 3rd Management Committee (MC) took over the helm of the Law

Society management, we sought to continue the work of the previous committees in building on identity, bonding, and relevance of law students as we are a young Society after all. To achieve these objectives, we set out to explore new initiatives for our frontline committees of Professional and Academic Development (“Pro-Acad”) and Events. Nevertheless, the supporting roles traditionally played by the Administrative (“Admin”), Finance, Marketing, and Public Relations (“PR”) committees also branched out into more frontline work in 2010 in our bid to engage the law population. INITIATIVES There are 3 main internal initiatives.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES (SOP) To facilitate the daily operations of the Law Society, the Administrative, Public Relations, and Finance SOPs were drafted. They serve to be a one-stop information point for Directors and Sub-clubs.3 In addition to that, to facilitate the handover procedure, the December 2009 SOP required that each Director keeps records of student’s contribution, do a post-mortem of the event, and keep relevant records to assist the subsequent

Director and Organizing Committees. This serves to ensure some form of continuity from year to ye ar, instead of having to start planning from scratch and facing the same problems year by year. It is hoped that over the years, the future batches may benefit from the experience of their predecessors.

EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN (EAP) The EAP was done up in light of two incidents which called for a concrete crisis management plan. The 3rd MC came up with guidelines for a swift response to crises. Crises are classified to be internal or external – the former involving the student population, while the latter involving the public-at-large.

BLACK BOOK

The Black Book serves as a repository of information required for the management of the SMU Law Society. It aims to serve as a guide to future MCs that they may understand structural and strategic decisions previously made and the rationale behind them. This initiative was handed down by the senior MCs.

The approach taken is basically as that of a dummy’s guide to the structure of the Law Society and previous issues that have arisen. It covers general issues about the position of the Law Society and its sub clubs, as well as the duties of individual directors of the society. Miscellaneous issues that have arisen and been discussed are also included. The final section includes chronological reports from preceding Directors and sub-club Presidents of their term in office.

The incoming MCs are also encouraged to add to the pre-existing information already present, to benefit future MCs.

SCHOOL-WIDE EVENTS LAW FRATERNITY GAMES 2010 Taking place at the NUS Bukit Timah Campus, the Law Fraternity Gam es was the product of a jointly coordinated effort between our Law Sports Club (one of our sub-clubs), NUS Law Sports Club and The Law Society of Singapore. The whole-day event provided a platfo rm for interaction of the legal fraternity, with teams from SMU Law, NUS Law and the Law Society of Singapore pit against each other in a wide range of sports.

LAW MUSICAL 2010 Following the much-lauded inaugural Law Play in 2009, a group of dedicated students embarked on a bigger and bolder project – the inaugural Law Musical. The full-length musical was graced by the Honourable V K Rajah, Justice of Appeal, and Professor Michael Furmston, dean of the School of Law. The Law Musical spun well-received retelling of the Little Mermaid – with a legal twist! – and featured an original script, original songs and music, original sets and costumes, and original choreography.

Aside from its dramatic achievements, the Law Musical also successfully raised over $1,000 for Very Special Arts Singapore, the partner beneficiary of the Musical. The charity provides access to the arts for people with disabilities for rehabilitation and social integration purposes. Artistic endeavours by the students of the School of Law look set to become an established avenue for giving back to the community-at-large.

 

SMALL EVENTS INITIATIVE One of the ways to increase student engagement is to provide the foundation for small and simple initiatives to materialize. Essentially, the Law Society provides funding and manpower support to materialize simple events.

Two such successful initiatives in 2010 were the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Children’s Day Celebrations. These events, while small in scale, represent a success in the implementation of simple ideas that law students hope to see. It is hoped that this spirit will be inculcated amongst the future batches of law students.

PROFESSIONAL & ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT USED BOOK SALE The week before every school semester, there will be a book sale where students can drop off used books to be sold, and purchase books for their next semester. This gives students and avenue to buy and sell, without the inconvenience of arranging meet-ups.

LAW REVISION SEMINARS During the mid-term break, the Law Society arranges to have a revision seminar conducted by top students from previous years for the freshmen. During the session, students can clarify doubts, practice hypothetical questions, and get a better understanding of how law examinations are assessed. This helps prepare our students ahead of the examinations.

LAW ACADEMIC ORIENTATION A follow-up to Law Camp, this inaugural session was conducted one afternoon before Term 1 AY2010/2011. The freshmen were taught how to bid on OASIS, use Vista and LMS Pilot, link up their laptops to the printers, and were able to ask any burning questions about school (e.g. class participation) and work.

SMUGGER NOTES Another first-time initi ative is the collation of study notes for freshmen. As most freshmen law students find some difficulty with adjusting to the law course and the university teaching style in year 1, we collated notes from top students for problem subjects and passed them onto the juniors. These notes were meant to be a reference and not the sole material used for examinations. It is hoped that with some initial hand-holding, our students would get a stable footing in their first few months of school.

ELECTIVES SURVEY, OTHER FEEDBACK CHANNELS & MEETING WITH DEANERY Throughout the year, surveys were done to assess popularity of electives modules, usefulness of core modules and other academic issues relating to internship and exchange. These issues were later relayed to the school’s Deanery. Bearing in mind that SMU Law is a young school, the feedback from our first few batches of students will be very useful in the school’s planning for the future.

MORATORIUM FOR TRAINING CONTRACTS (MORATORIUM) Together with NUS Law Club, the SMU Law Society configured a moratorium agreement, binding on all law students from both SMU and NUS graduating in the year 2012. The moratorium is a social contract between students to refrain from job applications until a specified date in 2011. This was done to alleviate fears and the race to apply during term time. The committee will continue to watch over issues relating to the moratorium, even after our office ends.

PUBLIC RELATIONS DEPARTMENT

FEEDBACK FORUM The inaugural feedback forum was held to garner direct feedback from students, and to hold us accountable to the student population. It is part of the 3rd MC’s efforts to increase accessibility and accountability to the student population. ELECTIONS

TRANSCRIPTS Acting upon a suggestion by a student, the Elections Committee decided to transcribe the candidate’s speeches and distribute to all Law students via email so as to increase the publicity of

the elections and accountability of the candidates. It is again part of the 3rd MC’s efforts to increase accessibility and accountability to the student population.

LESSONS LEARNT AND FUTURE OUTLOOK The common themes to the lessons learnt by the various directors in the year were that of the need to be accountable to the electorate, and the need to communicate well both internally with the MC and externally with the various stakeholders.

2010 has marked several milestones in the Law Society reaching out to engage the law students and continued efforts in streamlining procedures within the MC, but bricks of foundation have only been laid and the subsequent committee would do well in furthering the similar objectives for optimum benefit for the population.

he 6th SMU Social Science Students’ Society (SSS SS) Executive Committee

(ExCo) took over with the big dreams for the Social Science student body. Our top most priority was to foster a sense of identity among SMU Social Science students in order to improve cohesion. We hoped that every Social Scientist could find their place within the Society. We sought to improve the academic support for our students and finally, we wanted to contribute to and enhance the well-being of all social science students.

To achieve this, we implemented new initiatives while preserving some traditions that our predecessors had already put in place. ADDITION OF A NEW PORTFOLIO

In order to better achieve the goals and vision of the 6th SSSSS, the ExCo decided to pioneer the Society’s efforts in increasing the profile of our Society and its activities amongst potential sponsors. Hence, we created a new portfolio – External Liaison Officer – which is a special portfolio to handle and negotiate collaborations with potential sponsors and aid in the setting up of the Social Science Alumni Club. EVENTS In addition to the annual Social Science’s Freshmen Orientation Camp, the ExCo planned for two more cohesion events during the calendar year which were eventually coined as Child’s Play and

7th’s A Charm. Preserving what our predecessors have done, we brought in ad-hoc committees to wholly organize these cohesion events. We saw freshmen, sophomores, junior year and even senior year students coming together to plan and execute these cohesion events for their fellow social scientists. In the process, they gained new experience valuable for their education and of course, build new bonds and ties with members of their committee, across the different cohorts in the faculty. INITIATIVES

MAJORS DECISIONS TALKS In order to ensure that fellow Social Scientists had adequate academic support from both the Society and the school, at the start of our term, we distributed the Students’ Satisfaction Survey so that the ExCo could better target our efforts into areas the school population felt was inadequate. From the survey results, we saw that there was a need for the Major Decision talks. These talks served as an avenue for fellow Social Scientist to seek out additional information about the different majors offered by the school so to make an informed decision. STUDENTS’ DEGREE PLANNER In addition to the talks, we improved the academic support through the introduction of a social science degree planner written in Excel. This planner allows Social Science students to plan their modules more conveniently, and continues to be updated each semester as improvements and new modules and models are added to it.

WELFARE The students’ welfare has always been something that the past Social Science Society ExCos had been emphasizing on. The 6th ExCo is not an exception. We continued the practices of giving out exam welfare packages and booking of study rooms during the intense weeks of studying during the break in week 14.

But we did not stop there. Welfare initiatives were further expanded to include our faculty members as well. During the second semester of the academic year, we introduced Professors’ Day which was a day set aside to thank our professors for all the hard work and patience they have put in to help us along in our pursuit of knowledge. We had students write thank you notes to professors which we also helped foster better student-professor relationships.

We also had a Halloween welfare event which was simply a mid-term event for students to let their hair down and enjoy themselves with costumes and treats.

FUTURE OUTLOOK During the one year in office, the 6th ExCo realized that reality could sometimes be a nightmare instead. But like Jonas Salk said, we eventually conquered our nightmares with our dreams. The path in championing student welfare is not an easy one. But like the Twelve Apostles along the southern coast of Australia, we believe that big and beautiful things could emerge from the harsh conditions.

To the 7th ExCo, we wish you a good and fruitful year ahead in your term of office and hopefully the experiences that we have shared with you from us as well as what has been shared with us from our predecessors, will ease your path and time in office. “Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world” – Harriet Tubman

aimed to help the secretarial portfolios contribute a more strategic focus to the Students’ Association Council (SAC). POLICY BOOK The committee’s initial objective was to create a Policy book, a consolidation of all the latest guidelines and policies that the SAC maintains. However, beyond creating guidelines, the AAC has consistently ensured that the guidelines are enforced equitably across all clubs. The arduous process of creating awareness of the SMUSA guidelines began in January 2010, when the SMUSA email guidelines were strictly enforced for the first time in a long while. To bring the emphasis on equity even further, internal guidelines were also created to set parameters to the flexibility allowed for the length of email penalty and its adjustments. Other documents contained in the Policy Book include Assets Guidelines, Constitutions, IT Guidelines, Sponsorship Guidelines, Booth Guidelines, Notice Board Guidelines, Club Guidelines, LCD TV Guidelines and any other document pertaining to the operations of SMUSA. HANDOVER EXERCISE (HE) Another significant milestone of the AAC was the Handover Exercise. This exercise, served to facilitate the handover process between executive committees, made sure that the incoming committee had adequate knowledge of SMUSA operations. This exercise enhanced the transparency of student clubs in SMU, where the good, the bad and the ugly surfaced and became known. The HE also helped create opportunities for interaction between the incoming Constituent Body Management Committees (CBd ExCos MCs) with the incoming club ExCos. This invaluable meet up helped establish a working platform for

our successors, and paved the way for a smooth transition into their term of office. As part of the HE, each club has a Club Portfolio, a document profiling the club. Information contained within the Club Portfolio would be made available to all the CBds, and would aid the SMUSA Finance Committee if more information needed to be known in the process of budgeting. It would also help the Events Committee in streamlining events, based upon the After Action Review provided in the Club Portfolio. An assets listing in the Portfolio also makes known the assets available within SMUSA. A detailed review cycle for the HE was created to ensure that all the clubs consistently update their Portfolio Records and were up to mark in terms of performance. ELECTION The AAC has successfully served as a useful platform when election period arrived. This year, communication of IITS guidelines were done by the Honorary General Secretary, and disseminated across the CBds. I am pleased to note that various CBds have stepped up efforts to increase the credibility of their internal elections. The School of Information Systems (SISS) and Special Interest and Community Service Sodality (SICS), in particular were particularly strict in ensuring that their elections were done in witness of a sufficient quorum. I commend them on making this courageous decision. Management of Clubs The AAC also manages the operational aspects of the creation and closure of clubs. With one portfolio in charge of ensuring that locker issuances, email account creations and finance codes were done appropriately. This minimized the repeated referrals that clubs encountered, and thus smoother operations.

THOUGHTS I would like to express my special gratitude to Ms Tessa Ang, the SMUSA Vice President, for all her guidance and help in making the HE an effective one. Her stamina and pa tience was key in helping to ensure that all the clubs did their HE properly. To the Secretaries of the various CBds: Ms. Lydia Toh, Mr. Jonathan Tan, Ms. Tan Tong Ling, Ms. Ng Bao Qi, Ms. Beatrix Teo, Ms. Sarah Wan, Mr. Paul Yap, Ms. Janet Chua, Mr.s Rais Ismail. Thank you for being supportive of this new initiative although it hadn’t been anticipated when we first stepped into office. s one of the standing committees of the SMU Student’s Association (SMUSA),

the Assets Management Committee (AMC) consists of the Assets Secretaries of each CCA Constituent Body (CBd) as well as the SMUSA Assets Secretary, who is also automatically appointed as the Chairperson of the Committee. The committee does not have representation from the School CBds as they hold minimal assets as of today. However, option is still granted to them to join this committee, subject to the consent of the Students’ Association Council (SAC). The committee was formerly held by the SMUSA Honorary General Secretary 2 years ago, but now comes under the purview of the Assets Secretary, a portfolio that was introduced by the 7th SMUSA Executive Committee (ExCo). The AMC’s scope of responsibility is defined as, but not limited to the following, as governed by the SMUSA Constitution: -­‐ To ensure accountability for Constituent Body-

owned and Club-owned assets through bi-annual auditing;

-­‐ To initiate a Mega Logistic Meeting for SMUSA summer events;

-­‐ To serve as liaison between all CBds, clubs and the Office of Student Life (OSL) in matters pertaining to logistics;

-­‐ To facilitate and guide representatives of the CBds to oversee the temporary loaning of assets owned by their respective Management Committees;

-­‐ To provide logistical support to university events, where applicable; and

-­‐ To perform such other functions as may be directed by the SAC.

VARIOUS OPERATIONAL AREAS OF THE COMMITTEE MAINTAINING SMUSA ASSETS The AMC maintains assets as well as various facilities in SMU for the

Association’s use. We conducted random checks on these assets to ensure that all of these assets are accounted for and are in good condition. These included the storage areas at the basement of the School of Information System, the CCA Office area, the store beside OSL ( opposite Koufu), Glassroom Café (formerly known as Treehouse Café), and the SMUSA Lunchtalk Room. MEGA LOGISTICS MEETING In efforts to coordinate logistical support for orientation camps and summer activities, the AMC had 2 meetings where all the camp ICs met to de-conflict their requirements with the various CBd Assets Secretaries. Over 40 representatives, representing 14 camp groups, turned up for these meetings. As a result, no major logistical problem occurred for any of the camps or activities. ASSET MANAGEMENT SUB COMMITTEE This year, we decided to embark on something that was never done before, which is to recruit a sub-committee. This committee was tasked to facilitate improvements on current procedures and systems, such as the assets loans procedure and the summer logistics coordination. Each team was tasked with projects such as Assets Audit, CCA Room built-in lockers, management of storeroom, booth loan procedures, guidelines and more. They had to identify areas of improvement, factor in considerations and recommend changes.

Out of the 4 projects that were presented as proposals to the SMUSA ExCo, 2 projects were successfully executed, while the other 2 were incubated for future considerations.

The changes the AMC has done has been in the interests of our student life, and we hope that clubs and societies will benefit from the improvements made.

oing well by doing good- This is the bold commitment from many successful

organizations that want to excel in the long run. Similarly, in our humble SMU community, while it is imperative to generate more profits to sustain student activities, the process of “doing good (for the community)” is equally, if not, more important in our activities. SMU BIZCOM is the financing arm of the SMU Students’ Association (SMUSA) and the largest standing committee under SMUSA. Through its initiatives and activities, BIZCOM is committed to generating profits that aims to facilitate student life activities in SMU.

SMU BIZCOM consists of the following entities: • Events Management • UniVantage (SMU Student Privilege Card)

2010 was about creating an all-action BIZCOM that benefitted the Students’ Association, our members and most importantly, the SMU community at large. While the 10th Executive Committee (ExCo) had our own initiatives such as the Post-Exam Party (better known as The Fling), we were keen to continue with the fantastic job done by the 9th ExCo.

I am delighted to announce that BIZCOM’s revenue has broken the 5-figure barrier to $122,690 this year. The unprecedented increase in revenues is largely attributed to the increase in strategic collaborations with our corporate partners, which raked in $75,000 in 2010. Much of this revenue has since been used in cash sponsorship for major CBd events like SMUX’s AdRace, SSU’s Sports Fiesta and Bondue’s Bondue Camp. This revenue has also been set aside to continue the SMUSA-BIZCOM CCA Scholarships and SMUSA-BIZCOM Student Life Awards, which is BIZCOM’s little way of helping our needy peers in the community who have excelled in student life. In this aspect, I’m proud my Committee has indeed done well by doing good.

F INANCIAL INFORMATION PROFITS For FY2010, we declared revenue of $122,690. This figure includes the various initiatives carried out by BIZCOM over the year and the strategic collaborations we have had. BIZCOM has broken new grounds in strategic collaborations, raking in about $60,000 in cash from these partnerships this year. Overall, BIZCOM’s profits are $75,200. EXPENSES Though BIZCOM is self-sufficient and does not receive any funding, we work closely with the SMUSA Finance Secretary to ensure finances are controlled tightly to maximize profits for SMUSA.

BIZCOM’s expenses include rental costs for event venue and costs related to organizing our events. At the same time, BIZCOM has cut back on expenses related to welfare over the year, while increasing spending in activities that could provide invaluable experiences that can help our members excel in their positions, such as the Photoshop workshop we conducted during the BIZCOM Camp in January.

FINANCIAL CONTROL AND SUPERVISION BIZCOM strives for strict financial control in order to maximize profits, and ensure that money is well-spent in the best interest of the schools. Due to the supernormal profits this year, we have not maintained the 3:1 model adopted by previous BIZCOM Executive Committees.

At the same time, money transferred in aid of CBds and students are also closely monitored by SMUSA Finance Secretary, the BIZCOM President, BIZCOM Finance Secretary and OSL officers. This year, BIZCOM has transferred about $20,000 in support of student activities (as listed below) and contributed $7,500 in scholarships/awards to our needy peers.

UNIVANTAGE (UV) This year, UV has continued to bridge the gap between our student community and UV

merchants by l aunching the 2nd Univanzaar which included fun-filled stage games and very attractive prizes. We had an unprecedented 80 stalls in UniVanzaar in 1-3 September this year, making this the biggest ever in BIZCOM’s history. UniVanzaar also highlighted our new exclusive telco, Singtel, which sold their iPhone 4s exclusively and brought in their Comex offers right to our students’doorsteps.

The UV team has also successfully managed to attract major brands like APB to sponsor our events.

The UniVantage team continued the biannual editions of our publication, naming it the ‘UniVantage Digest’. The key strategy for this publication was to up the production quality of this magazine to match commercial standards in order to increase readership as well as to increase advertising sales. The strategy paid off, which led to us selling out all our advertisement space and saw our magazines snapped off very quickly. Our team of editors and writers has done a tremendous job doing both the write-ups, and the design of the magazine.

For the first time, UniVantage also leveraged on social media like Facebook to carry out extensive promotion campaigns. To identify the needs of our students, we carried out a student feedback survey which drew more than 300 responses. We also launched various interactive lucky draws and competitions on our Facebook page for students with attractive prizes kindly sponsored by partner merchants. These competitions have also increased the publicity of UniVantage, hence we are able to reach out to more students to share with them the benefits we can bring to our peers.

Lastly, we continued what UniVantage does best: sourcing discounts at our students’ favourite hangouts and nearby food-joints. We successfully added well-known names to our already flourishing portfolio of Food, Fashion, Lifestyle & Wellness. We are also proud in having names such as Wavehouse and Lifebrandz outlets like Zirca and Café del Mar as our merchants. At present, the UniVantage membership base numbers close to 200, and we are proud that all students are able to enjoy these offers with our partners!

EVENTS AND BAZAARS

BAZAARS Every term, the Events team carries out a bazaar usually between week 10-12 and these bazaars are always very well received with its themed decoration as its pull factor. This year we outdid ourselves yet again with a very realistic Halloween decoration for the Mystic Mall Bazaar as well as a fashion runway concept for The Fash Haus Bazaar. Both were well received and over 50 merchants opened their booths over the 3 day bazaar.

FRESHMEN BASH The annual freshmen bash is the highlight of our term. Surpassing past years’ profits, the “Escapade” theme worked out well and Zouk was packed with not only freshmen but seniors that also enjoyed the yearly bash. The sponsorship team managed to clinch 39 sponsors and our New Urban Male goodie bags were so popular due to the awesome goodies that could be found inside. Our marketing team also explored a new means of marketing strategy by investing in a standee that was 3m x 3m tall and featured our “Escapade” logo as well as allowed us to magnify our sponsors’ logos by at least 5 times as compared to the old strategy of using the banner.

INITIATIVES TO DEVELOP OUR NEXT-GENERATION LEADERS UniVantage and Events came together to produce BIZCOM’s inaugural Post-Exam Party: The Fling. This collaboration was created to give our juniors the invaluable experience of organizing their very own event. This was seen by our Executive Committee as an important stepping stone for our juniors towards ExCo positions. More importantly, it gave BIZCOM a chance to increase its standing by organizing a party at the most opportune of times – right after our exams!

Helmed by our Senior Business Executives, and advised by Mr. Kenny Lin Baochong (UV Director) and Ms. Leanne Teo Zhelin (Events Director), the juniors took up the majority of the leadership positions. Ultimately, our party at Supperclub was an astounding success which had an excellent turnout of 600. This support from the student population culminated the continuation of this event, the Fling 2, which was held in November 2010.

OPERATIONS Besides UniVantage and Events’ initiatives this year, BIZCOM is also the student authority in upholding SMUSA-OAA Sponsorship Guidelines and the SMUSA-OSL-LBU Agreement for space rental. At the same time, BIZCOM Events’ Sales Director was t asked with managing the 2 pushcarts we had, and renting them out to external parties. These pushcarts provided additional revenue while injecting vibrancy to student life.

As a successful succession was the cornerstone of our team’s vision, we have gone through great pains to ensure proper handover. This was done by having the incoming team takes up positions in November while the current committee guided them till the end of the year. Most importantly, we have worked hard as a team to empower our juniors with leadership roles and guiding them along the way, with the Post-Exam Party being the epitome of our plans. These on-the-job training should go a long way to ensuring a well-prepared 11th ExCo which can better our achievements in serving the student community.

IMPROVING BIZCOM ’S STANDING IN SMU We have identified BIZCOM’s contribution to the student community as a key driver to improve our reputation. This year, we have focused on the establishment of the SMUSA-BIZCOM Student Life Awards, a brain child introduced by our predecessors. These awards have since recognized 10 outstanding student leaders who have positively contributed to our school community at large.

We have also contributed greatly in support of 18 major University events (please see below for full list) financially or in terms of prizes. Most importantly, we have worked with the SMUSA Welfare Committee to make the SMUSA Movie Gala possible, as well as sweetened the Exam Welfare Package by bringing in popular brands like Frolick and Ben & Jerry’s. I am hopeful that BIZCOM has benefited many of our peers by practicing some form of corporate social responsibility for the last year.

he Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) was established in mid 2010 for the purpose of reviewing the constitutions

of SMUSA and its 10 Constituent Bodies (CBds). This committee comprised myself, our Law Society President Ms. Sheena Yeoh, and SMUSA Honorary General Secretary Ms. Emile Law. The SMUSA constitution was last amended in 2005 and the CBd constitutions since not yet been reviewed. Over the years, many clauses became outdated, and new clauses were due for addition. Our review exercise was prompted by loopholes that were discovered when the constitutions were supposed to serve as a solid guide, such as during election period as well as for the passing of votes. STANDARDISATION Many changes were made across CBds for standardization purposes. These included detailing the period for Annual General Meetings, the timing of AGMs and Elections and number of ExCo members etc. STANDING ORDERS Standing Order clauses were put into all the constitutions. As such, SMUSA and the CBds now have Standing Orders to govern the regulation of our operations. This has put a lot of our procedures in black and white. One good example would be the SMUSA Internal Elections Standing Order. Because of it in place, the Internal Election was conducted smoothly. The CBds have adopted this Standing Order for their own elections to ensure the transparency and smooth operations of their elections as well. PASSING THE AMENDMENTS The SMUSA and CBd Constitutions have been reviewed by the CRC, OSL and Office of Legal and General Affairs. It is pending approval from USLC and Ministry of Home Affairs. All eleven constitutions have been passed at the respective AGMs.

LOOKING FORWARD For the year 2011, I will be staying on in the CRC to look into the review of the Constitutions of the 99 CCAs. While meeting up with the CCAs from the Handover Exercise, we realized that a number of CCAs do not have constitutions. As such, we have asked that they start drafting their own ones. In the summer, we will be reviewing all the CCA constitutions to ensure that there is consistency across the board as well as to ensure that it is in line with the newly amended SMUSA and CBd Constitutions. Also, proper procedures on how to amend constitutions will be set up and let known to the CCAs.

APPRECIATION The job of the CRC is not a glamorous or a sought after job. But it is a job that had to be done. I would like to thank the CRC for their time and hard work put in. Thanks for taking this journey with me. And last but not least, special thanks to Mr. Edmund Chin and Mr. Jonathan Chen from the Office of Legal Affairs, as well as Mr. Tan Kong Soon from the Office of Student Life (OSL).

he SMUSA Executive Committee (ExCo) Election is probably one of the most

important and momentous SMUSA event of the year. To champion the importance of transparency and integrity, the Election Committee has undergone several structural changes. In year 2010, the SMUSA election officers were selected by the 10 outgoing Constituent Body Presidents, fairly representing a significant portion of SMU students. The SMUSA Constitution was also revised such that the outgoing Executive Committee must remain independent of the operational and decision making process of the election, with the exception of the outgoing SMUSA Honorary General Secretary (HGS), who plays only an advisory role with no executive power. Shortly after the constitution of the Election Committee, a general meeting was first held for the planning of the series of programmes in furtherance of the SMUSA ExCo Election efforts. In the course of a short ten weeks, the Election Committee organized a string of events leading up to the SMUSA general and internal elections, and set up communication channels to keep various stakeholders such as the voting population and candidates informed. The SMUSA ExCo Election efforts can be broadly classified into three phases viz. pre-nomination, pre-election and internal election. During the pre-nomination phase, the events such as pro-nomination promotion, info session and launching of social network platforms, were organized to promote awareness of upcoming SMUSA ExCo Election and to allow prospective candidates to clarify their doubts that relate to

standing for election. The commencement of nomination marked the end and beginning of pre-nomination and pre-election phases respectively. Subsequent to the closing of nomination, a worksh op by Mr. Nathaniel Koh, the Honorary Finance Secretary from the 8th SMUSA ExCo was held. This session was held to teach the candidates various methods of campaigning. There was also a photo shoot session in aid of the candidates’ campaigning efforts. This was held in tandem with the internal interviews of the candidates by the election officers for background due diligence. A public forum dialogue was also held to provide a platform of interaction between the candidates and voting population at large. It was meant to be a debate of current issues facing the student population. Albeit the low turnout rate, we believe that this is a right step forward in gaining the interest of the voting population for future elections. We also worked towards streamlining the internal election process. Taking into account the (very varied) interests of various stakeholders, we held a briefing for the election processes for incoming SAC members. I was blessed with a capable team. Mr. Indra Darmawan shouldered the marketing efforts for the entire election. While the electronic communication channels like the Facebook page and our very own website were managed by Mr. Irshad; Ms. Audrey Lim presided over liaison with all seventeen candidates Ms. Yok Teng managed the finances of the committee.

s recent as October 2009, SMU International Connections (ICON) was

still a cultural club under the Arts and Cultural Fraternity Constituent Body (CBd). However, it now serves as the representative body of the international student community in SMU. Being in its inaugural year, the past 1 year has been a challenging one for us. Still, firm to the belief that differences across cultures and nationalities are here to stay, ICON knows that only by appreciating the unique differences among us, then only can we consider ourselves to be truly an international community. Hence, through events and sub-clubs, we have tried to enhance the cohesion among the diverse culture in SMU through different forms of engagement. We increased from 6 to 9 sub-clubs over the year, with the introduction of Francophiles, Yim Siam, and SMURoots. The number of active members among ICON’s combined clubs totaled 723 in the year 2010. Our Mission: -­‐ Promote a culturally vibrant and harmonious

environment through events held in SMU -­‐ Plan and organize interactive gatherings to

help facilitate the creation of stronger friendship between students

The BBQ @ East Coast and Kite Flying Outing sessions were events resultant of feedback from freshmen and exchange students, hosted at the start of the semester to allow buddies and the mentors to bond better.

APSARA CAMBODIA Apsara Cambodia was inactive in year 2010 due to the small number of Cambodian Students in SMU. As such, this club was classified as dormant pending further notice from the SMUICON ExCo. BARKADA FIL IP INO Barkada Filipino is a Filipino cultural club led by Mr Juan Gabriel Santiago Oblepias. It has over 60 members and its main event of the year was Halo Halloween. CHAO VIETNAM Chao Vietnam is a Vietnamese Cultural Club led by Ms. Le Thi Hong Oanh. It has over 100 members, and its events include Vietnamese Food Series, Movie Series, and The Hidden Charm – a “Visit Vietnam” event. CONNECT CHINA With over 200 members, Connect China is the largest club under SMUICON. It is led by Ms. Chao Nan and its events include business talks by leading Chinese businessmen, OCIP events as well as business study trips to China. FRANCOPHILES Francophiles was established in late July 2010 and has over 50 members. It is led by Ms Anna Shin Pui Hun, and organized the highly successful French Language Series and movie screenings.

MYANMAR COMMUNITY Myanmar Community (MC) has over 80 members, and is led by Ms. Khine Phoo Wai. MC’s event for the year was the Cultural Show, which was attended by the Provost and Deputy-President for Academic Affairs , Professor Rajendra Kumar Srivastava and Director of Office of Student Life, Ms Bernadette Toh. It also organized an OCIP trip to Myanmar. SMURoots SMURoots is a Singaporean Cultural Club led by Mr. Daniel Padang Zaudu. It has over 50 members, and its events for the year were One Night in Prinsep II, One Night @ Prinsep III and the Roots Beer event. WOORI SAYI Woori Sayi is a Korean Cultural Club, and is led by Ms. Melissa Tan Swee San. It has over 150 members and its events for the year were Korean Food Sessions, Korean Language Series and Dance Sessions. YIM SIAM Yim Siam is a Thai Cultural Club led by Mr. Nattawut Arunanondchai. It was founded in late July 2010, and its events for the year were its Thai Language Sessions and Thai Food outings. Apart from the events listed above all the clubs also had internal events which catered towards their own members. Also, Barkada Filipino, Chao Vietnam, Connect China and Myanmar Community had freshmen welcome parties to facilitate a smooth transition into SMU for the freshmen. FUTURE OUTLOOK After successfully laying foundations and placing the guidelines in place during ICON’s inaugural year, the time has come for SMUICON’s 6th ExCo to step down. Looking ahead, it will be imperative that the 7th ExCo looks into developing the 9 sub-clubs further as well as strengthening ICON itself. ICON has already positioned itself as the sole representative for the international students and 2011 will be the year ICON establishes itself as a

club where everyone, local or internati onal, can come on board to share their experiences and cultures, and look forward towards expanding their connections internationally. APPRECIATION I would like to thank my ExCo, Ms. Pham Nguyen Tuong Van, Mr. Wang Yang (John), Mr. Jonathan Tan Wei Loong, Ms. Ei Ei Hlaing, Mr. Shitij Nigam, Ms. Louisa Zephania, Mr. Naing Ye Lin, Mr. Tran Van Minh Phuc, Mr. Htin Kyaw, Ms. Anh Ngo Le Kim and Mr. Wang Yang (Bruce)) for their support and dedication. he Publications Committee continues to serve as the voice of the SMU student

population, gathering views from students and then publishing them in the quarterly magazine, The Blue and Gold. Mainly operating autonomously from the operating body of the SMUSA Executive Committee, the magazine has written - and continues to write - articles that serve to benefit the school population, ranging from school events to any pertinent student concerns that need to be addressed. When I took over from Michael Ng in 2009, my vision for The Blue and Gold was to transform it into not merely a student magazine, but a professional one that was indistinguishable from magazines at newsstands. I moved away from the old text-heavy layouts and decided that the magazine needs to be vibrant while keeping its sharp, intelligent approach towards school. I also believed that we needed to fully tap on the talent in school, and continually look out for talent in school that could better the magazine. Today, The Blue and Gold has five active editors, and great designers to supplement our new style. It is crucial, however, that we do not simply rest on our laurels: I believe strongly in a system of continuity, and I believe that the next committee of The Blue and Gold will make reporting about school issues even better. OPERATIONS CURRENT FACILITIES We are still operating within GSRs and Seminar Rooms whenever required. OSL has mentioned the creation of a journalism workspace for the publication-oriented clubs in SMU, although this is still very much in the works. MORE STRINGENT SELECTION PROTOCOL: Editors, under a new system created by a former editor, now have to through a more stringent selection process that involves a formal interview and grammar test. The editorial workflow for The

Blue and Gold was also modified to accommodate the new website, which unfortunately crashed in November. EXPANDED EXCO STRUCTURE Instead of having just a Managing Director (MD) at the helm supervising all operations, the MD role now includes a Deputy MD. The new MD role includes supervising all internal operations ranging from recruitment and magazine publication, while the deputy MD will supervise all marketing and external liaison. This structure will come into effect in March 2011. ACHIEVEMENTS / EVENTS

10TH ISSUE Our 10th issue was published in September 2010, and received much praise for the quality of the photos and articles. Sports were the main focus of the particular issue, and over 15 sports CCAs participated in a special photo shoot by Intrigue Visuals. The success of this issue can be attributed, but is not limited to the following people: Managing Editors Ms. Ankita Prasad, Mr. Senthil Sukumar, and Ms. Shobana Nadaraja; as well as Photography Coordinator, Ms. Deborah Lim Hui Li. PRESS INVITATIONS We continue to be one of the few clubs who are fortunate enough to receive press invitations for a

range of events as a media entity. In 2010 alone, we were invited to several business conferences, including the Global Entrepolis 2010, and also a special food ta sting session by Soup Broth Asia, among others. SUMMARY OF MILESTONES Recruitment, marketing and the quality of our magazine were the three things that The Blue and Gold focused on this year. We have certainly improved on all three factors. We now have a regular pool of approximately ten journalists, while a dedicated executive committee continues putting in a huge amount of effort for the magazine. In terms of marketing, we have had several information sessions and other training workshops that helped to boost brand recognition further. But more importantly, quality of the content was imperative, and we believe that we have achieved many of the targets that we had set for ourselves. There is now an improved visual quality to the magazine, and we have also pioneered the use of statistics for the content, making the magazine even more compelling to readers. PUSH TO GARNER MEMBERS ’ ACTIVITY Despite all these achievements, The Blue and Gold faces constraints with the commitment level of writers and journalists. As such we intend to further revamp the recruitment system for journalists and encourage a greater level of participation by setting a minimum level of commitment required. We hope that this will provide more regularity on article contributions and ease the number of articles that are required for the magazines.

FUTURE OUTLOOK It is crucial that, as a print publication, we are financially stable - hence, The Blue and Gold has to continue searching for sponsors who are willing to sustain the printing costs of the magazine. It is also important that journalists and writers are given the proper tools for them to be able to report - and we intend to hold journalism workshops in SMU more regularly. For 2011, The Blue and Gold intends to have a greater outreach in the school population through more directed marketing efforts. There will also be a revamp of the journalist recruitment system that is currently in place, and a selection of a committed executive committee that will help to bring the magazine towards progress.

espite being still a fledgling committee, the SMUSA Sponsorship Committee

has taken the lead in strategizing sponsorship efforts and fostering business opportunities.

PORTFOLIO OVERVIEW In spearheading university level sponsorship efforts, this committee has benefited student life in face of budget constraints. The newly formed partnerships with firms such as AIA and Citibank this year proved our success, indicating this committee’s indispensability in enriching student life. It also suggests a possibility of garnering student clubs towards being self sustainable. SMUSA Sponsorship Committee comprises: - A Chairperson, also President of SMU BIZCOM - A Vice Chairperson/ General Secretary, also Vice

President of SMU BIZCOM - Members, Sponsorship heads from the 10 Cbds This cross CBd collaboration enabled proper communication of guidelines, and allowed BIZCOM to share their best practices in sourcing for and maintaining sponsorships. Under the stewardship, and external negotiations led by its Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, the committee created a unified front for SMUSA sponsorship, thus capturing maximum value from our business partners. The Sponsorship Committee also served as a strategic team in identifying the needs and wants of our potential partners, while strategizing how CBds could identify needs of potential sponsors to create mutually beneficially relationships. STRATEGIC INITIATIVES COORDINATING KEY CBD EVENTS The committee collated all key events, with the possible funding needed sponsorship. This meant streamlining events to present prospective sponsors with a portfolio of quality events that most likely appealed to them. Companies were pleased to have fewer proposals to consider, and not be repetitively approached by different CCAs.

CREATING EXCLUSIVITY CLAUSES Streamlining contact points with sponsors positioned us well to propose exclusivity clauses. This meant provisioning exclusive sponsorship with a partner for an agreed length of time for specific events. Our key sponsors found this clause highly desirable, and it enticed them into signing major deals with us. This clause was only made available in large sponsorship deals that could benefit the entire student body.

CURBING SPAM WITH E-MAIL CHARGE BIZCOM is the formal authority managing commercial e-mails and liaison. Nevertheless, the Sponsorship Committee agreed on imposing a $100 e-mail charge to control commercial spam in SMU. Concurrently, we also pledged to limit corporate e-mails to about 2 per week to control supply of corporate e-mails, which could constitute as spam for many students. This benefitted the community in 3 ways: It increased revenue through mass mails, reduced email spam, and benefitted the purchasers of the e-mail as they were assured of quality publicity.

SHARING OF BEST PRACTICES In our efforts to bring sponsorship to a higher level for all student groups, we held a sharing session for best practices. These included sharing photo taking techniques and report writing tips for portraying the success of our events to sponsors.

APPRECIATION I would like to congratulate my Vice Chairperson Ms Lee Pei Zhi for having done a wonderful job in clinching the Citibank deal on behalf of the student body, and working overtime to ensure its success. The success of the Sponsorship Committee lay in the contribution of all its members. Everyone played a part in sharing their best practices and contributing events for sponsorship. We have successfully brought our experiences from BIZCOM to coordinate the activities, research before meet ups with prospects and spearhead negotiations. It has indeed been a good year for the start of this committee.

running. The objective of SMUSA Awards Night 2010 was to honor and to celebrate milestones of student life, clubs and the student leaders who contributed to its vibrancy that year. In particular, this year’s SMUSA Awards Night was held in our own University Lounge in Admin Building Level 6. The event was graced and attended by many distinguished guests including the Dean of Students, Director of OSL and the Guest-of-Honour, Prof. Raj who is the provost of SMU. Moreover, the committee increased the number of awards and incorporated vote casts into each awards criteria, which resulted in garnering about 500 responses from students. Similar to other relatively small events in SMU, SMUSA Awards Night 2010 was faced with the difficulty of marketing as it lacked its popularity and was executed during week 10 of Term 2, which was a hectic period for many students. However, the committee managed to hit the target participants in the end. Overall, SMUSA Awards Night 2010 was a thoroughly successful event and I believe the event itself has great potential to become a hallmark event of SMU Students’ Association. APPRECIATION I would like to thank the Awards Night organizing committee (Jeremy Ho, Amanda Chua, Eng Jin, Kae Xiang, Rena Soh, Paulin Chan, Xiao Xiang, Alex Chee, Pearl Lim, Ying Wah, Jessica, Tommy and Cynthia) for organizing such a great event and being a great team. I would also like to thank Mr. Tan Kong Soon from OSL for his advice in the awards criteria, Barworks for their fantastic cocktail, SMUBE for their sound system support, and most importantly, our SMUSA ExCo members for their constant support and advice. Chairperson, Freshmen Teambuilding Camp (FTB) Committee

he Freshmen Teambuilding Camp (FTB) is more than just an inauguration camp

with its famous mandatory nature. FTB is SMU’s way of welcoming each new batch of freshmen into our growing family. With this objective in mind, this year’s theme was about the formation of one’s identity, as a rite of passage into SMU – TRANSFORM. Whether it is large or small, every freshman faced their own individual transformations through FTB 2010.

After half a year of intense preparation comprising of skills training by qualified personnel from the Office of Student Life, programme vetting and testing, recce and mock camps, the organizing team welcomed about 1,400 freshmen at our campus and OBS (East Coast) through 4 independent runs (spanning from end June to early August) for what each run was to be a 50% learning, 50% fun experience of teambuilding and self-discovery for all.

Being the first event under the Freshmen Experience umbrella, which also comprises of Convocation, Vivace and Freshmen Bash, the FTB camp sets the tone in stylish fashion.

The three days and two nights camp saw participants partake in the carefully designed programmes that aptly reflect the SMU CIRCLE Values – Commitment, Integrity, Responsibility, Collegiality, Leadership and Excellence.

On top of that, the activities in the itinerary also encouraged the freshmen to step out of their comfort zone, and challenged their inner beings in novel ways that naturally stimulated learning interests because the committee believed there is

more to be gained when one learns willingly than him being forced to do so. Bringing out the true spirit of campus life was what FTB 2010 aimed to pass on to the freshmen, and this is certainly almos t impossible without the unwavering support from the SMUSA ExCo and the Office of Student Life.

At the end of the short but sweet journey of the camp, many reluctantly bid their goodbyes due to the tight bonds forged for many – a comforting sign for the organizing team that it was worth the hard work put in, resulting in a job well done, and more.

THANK YOU To my amazing organizing committee, sub-committees, facilitators and helpers, THANK YOU for staying together throughout our whole FTB journey as we fought the doubts and uncertainty against what we set out to do. It was a long journey, and I know I pushed you really hard but I held the faith that at the end of the day, you would agree with my personal motto “Be the change that you want to see”. I dare say we made it, and we succeeded with a bang. The ending was sweet indeed, and it would not have been possible without each of you keeping the level of your commitment, motivation and spirits high even when you were yearning for that extra forty winks. “For the freshmen” – that is one phrase I am pretty sure none of us will forget.

I hope the memories of this event would stay with you for a long time to co me as it would for me. And just like to the freshmen, I hope you have acquainted yourself well with the CIRCLE Values and have started applying them in your everyday lives. The friendships forged (and for some, more) shall remind us of what we have achieved together as one. FTB 2010 will be, I sincerely hope, a lasting memory for us all.

To Professor Low Aik Meng, Bernie, Team OSL (Yew Tong, Ridzuwan, Chieh Ming, Karen, Reneeta, James, Kong Soon) and the 10th SMUSA ExCo, thank you for the faith placed in us that we could bring about positive change with an impact for FTB 2010, and hence the immense support provided to us whenever we needed it. What you have given to the organizing team was more than we could ask for, and you had certainly made the journey all the more enjoyable and worthwhile.

Last words As the saying goes, “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going”. What was left out in that statement was that the tough can only get going with the support of those around him. Friends sustain each of us when the going gets tough. And that is exactly what FTB provides for all involved, especially our freshmen. Each entered being one and left as better individuals knowing more about themselves, bonded as one at the start of their journey with SMU.

Student Producer (Pre-formal) Convocation Committee MS. TESSA ANG CHENG AI

s the 2nd event of SMU’s Freshmen Experience, Convocation 2010 was set

to be grander than ever and much different than previous years. This year, the event was held at Resorts World, Sentosa, instead of the usual Suntec City Convention Hall. PRE-FORMAL SEGMENT The Pre-formal Segment lasted for 30 minutes and presented parents and freshmen an exclusive peek at SMU’s student life and all that it offers. This segment began with Ballare’s Quick Step number. And for the first time at Convocation, sports CCA were able to perform. 13 Sportsmen in 7 SSU Clubs (Capoeira, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Kendo, Wushu, Silat and Karate) came together to put up an unforgettable performance showcasing the talents of various Martial Arts groups. Freshmen were also treated to 4 videos featuring FTB, Convocation, Vivace and Freshmen Bash, which were pieced together nicely as a storyline that portrayed the storyline of FE 2010 – Transcend. Bash contestants also saw themselves making a first appearance in this segment, allowing the audience to know them better. FORMAL SEGMENT Convocation this year also adopted a less formal theme. In line with this, Samba Masala was brought on to play for the Formal Procession, instead of the symphonic band. The Student Leaders Procession also had 250 Student Leaders from every CCA in SMU reciting the Student Leader’s Pledge. This year, SMUSA and CCA CBd flags were also showcased as symbols of their prestige. Freshmen and parents alike also witnessed the hand over from our then SMU President, Prof. Howard Hunter to our current President Prof Arnoud De Meyer.

SMU Chinese Orchestra, Eurythmix, InDancity, Ardiente, Caderas and Samba Masala also put on performances that awed the crowd. APPRECIATION I would like to thank the entire SMUSA Convocation Team for their hard work in making this event a success. Special thanks to my Co-Producer, Mr Jacob Selvan. It is heartening to see that most of them are still continuing to contribute

to student life in their various positions now. Thanks also to Mr. Linh and his team in SMUBE Campus TV for spending countless hours perfecting the videos. I would also like to thank Mr. Jimmy Ye and Mr. Yeow Ching Shiong for their constant guidance and keen eye for detail. Special thanks also go to Ms Ng Wei Xin and her team. I am extremely appreciative of the good working relationship and friendships forged during this journey of making Convocation 2010 a success.

nother event under the Freshmen Experience umbrella is Vivace, which we

fondly known as SMU’s very own CCA Day – a day that unites all the clubs and societies as they come and work closely with each other. It aims to introduce the multitude of activities that has shaped the SMU’s culture, while also allowing them to find CCAs which interest them – with the vast diversity and range of clubs and societies in school, there is definitely a place that a freshman can find others of similar interests and concerns. Held on the 20th August 2010, Vivace attracted more than 1000 freshmen, including international exchange students, with its day- long vibrant and fun-filled activities. With more than 100 booths filling parts of the concourse, as well as Level 1 of the School of Economics and Social Science, everyone was immersed with interest at the various CCA booth.

This year’s theme was Transfuse, emphasizing the two-way transfer of knowledge and friendship between the seniors and freshmen. A Romanian inspired marketing scheme was adopted to complement our main theme, bringing the vibrancy and energy of the event to a new height. CCAs booths were adorned in gold and white, the theme colors of the event. Some seniors even dressed up as Roman soldiers! President Howard Hunter graced the occasion as the Guest-of-Honour, taking part in the opening ceremony and also taking a tour of the event. As he passed by the booths, he stopped by the booths to interact with the students and enthusiastically took part in some of the CCAs tryouts and activities. The main things that this year’s committee introduced and believe were of great value include: -­‐ An improved system of allocating funds to

clubs and societies, ensuring more meaningful amounts were given to each club or society, with greater equality.

-­‐ A new system of voting for CCAs to prevent fou l play while ensuring greater transparency.

-­‐ A new floor plan to reduce over-crowding in the concourse and more space for tryouts and activities for the CCAs.

Vivace 2010 was definitely a day to remember for all stakeholders, including the organizing committee and subcommittees, clubs and societies, and of course, the freshmen. Everyone had fun and we are definitely looking forward to next year’s Vivace.

An artist will never amount to anything, no matter how skilled he is, if there is no audience.

he Paint-A-Pillar Project was one student initiative project that was inspired a few

batches of student leaders ago, and found its way into its 3rd year of history. This initiative aptly portrays the vibrancy amongst SMU students.

28 HOURS… is how long Dong Hao took to complete his painting, which is now fondly referred to as the “pillar with flowers”. His pillar is one of the ten that has been drawing curious looks from people walking through the Li Ka Shing Library. This year’s Paint A Pillar is significant because we managed to preserve last year’s artworks in the concourse! I ’M UNIQUE! Inspired by the yearlong 10th Anniversary celebrations, this year’s theme, I ’m UNIque! , is a showcase of the vibrant and dynamic culture that sets us apart as a university. We are honoured to collaborate with Social Creatives, our paint sponsors, this year. You will want to look out for their pillar – it is a beautiful mosaic inspired by the art of quilt making. A PILLAR PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS! Each pillar has a unique message that the painters want to send out to the school. Some pillars reflect our painters’ passion for what they do, as exemplified by the ACF pillar. Its design embodies the vibrancy and energy exuded by all 27 ACF

clubs under the ACF ambit and celebrates the university’s innumerable talented musicians, dancers, artists, and performers who constantly raise the standard of the arts in SMU. You will find that the Bizcom Univantage and Symphonia pillars also echo their sentiments of pride in our school’s diversity and talent. Other pillars embody something more sentimental. One pillar that we want to highlight is the one lovingly painted by our seniors, Ms. Goh Si Ying & Ms. Chua Yi Zhen. While other pillars were painted by student groups, theirs represents their desire to leave a mark on the university before they graduate. MORE THAN 200 PALM PRINTS… currently adorn the pillar at the T-Junction. Palm-A-Pillar was one of the initiatives we spearheaded to provide more opportunities for involvement from the whole SMU family. Staff, faculty and even members of the public were invited to join the students in designing the pillar. THANK YOU! To our painters, the pillars are testament to your gift for creative expression. Your pillars are definitely a sight to behold! Keep painting, you have my fullest support! My appreciation goes out to SMU Broadcast & Entertainment and all our performers for drumming up interest in the painting process. You guys were instrumental in raising the visibility of PAP 2011!

Notice of Annual General Meeting Singapore Management University Students’ Association NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the 10th Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held on Wednesday, 26th January 2011 at 7.00pm at the Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium, School of Accountancy Building, Singapore Management University for the purpose of transacting the following businesses: To receive and, if approved, to adopt the Singapore Management University Studentsʼ Association (SMUSA) Annual Report and Unaudited consolidated financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2010.

-­‐ To reappoint the SMUSA Assurance & Advisory Team as Internal Auditors of the SMUSA -­‐ To transact any other business which may normally be dealt with at an Annual General Meeting
