Welcome to Oviedo with CitoCode! CITY INTRODUCTION

Oviedo has everything you would expect from a legendary and period city. The Asturian capital is not only the religious, administrative, educational and commercial centre of the region, but it is also a reference point for all those pilgrims traveling the Primitive Route. Oviedo was the first Christian capital of the Iberian Peninsula, this turned it in the beacon of Christianity in the Middle Ages; This rich history continues to be present in the streets of the city as reflected in the distinction of UNESCO as a World Heritage Site to the distinct Pre-Romanesque Art present in the capital Asturias.

SMDNSanta María del Naranco

SAVISan Vicente

The Palace of Ramiro I on Mount Naranco is a unique building without a clear-cut purpose (palace, church, royal pavilion, royal hall, etc.). The building has a rectangular ground plan and is divided into two floors connected by an external stairway. The lower floor, or crypt, is completely sea-led, while the upper floor is open.

On this same site in 761, the abbots Máximo and Fromistano founded the first building in the city, a monastery dedicated to St Vincent, following the Rule of St Benedict. In the 18th century, the monastery was to enjoy great economic splendour and intellec-tual renown due to the presence of Father Feijóo, who served as

Oviedo Cathedral has its origins in the basilica built by King Alfonso II The Chaste (791-842) dedicated to San Salvador (the Holy Saviour). It was built on the ruins of an earlier church ordered built by his father,

The building we see today co-rresponds to about a third of the original building. During the Late Middle Ages, the church collap-sed in part, the present-day apse being subsequently rebuilt. The

SIERSan Isidoro el Real

This church, formerly the Church of San Matías, was part of the college of San Matías built in the 16th century. Construction work began in 1578 with money bequeathed in the will of Doña Magdalena de Ulloa to create a Jesuit school, and was completed in 1681. In 1770, following the expulsion of the Jesuits, it became the present parish Church of San Isidoro.

La Foncalada Fountain dates from the 9th century and was built during the reign of Alfonso III the Great (866-910). It is the sole example from the High Middle Ages of a civilian structure built for public use.

PDCOPalacio de Camposagrado (Camposagrado Mansion)

Camposagrado Mansion was built in the mid-18th century by order of the Marquis of Camposagrado, José Manuel Bernaldo de Quirós, with architects Pedro Fernández Lorenzana and Domingo Suárez Solar being commissioned for the project. The subsequent work is attributed to Francisco de la Riva,

who built only the ground floor. In 1746, the construction of the se-cond floor was the work of Antonio Pedro Menéndez de Ambás and was completed around 1757.

PAVEPalacio de Velarde (Velarde Mansion)

PDTOPalacio de Toreno (Toreno Mansion)

Built between 1771 and 1773 for Pedro Velarde Calderón y Prada, it is the work of Asturian archi-tect Manuel Reguera González. It is a square building, with three floors, organized around a central courtyard formed by three-centred arches on Tuscan columns. Inside the mansion, there is an out-standing imperial staircase and upstairs gallery, which opens onto the running balcony looking onto the inner courtyard, now closed.

It was built in the late 17th century (1673) by Gregorio de la Roza for the Malleza family, which is why it is also known as Malleza Mansion. The façade has an inscription sta-ting that José María Ruiz Queipo del Llano Ruiz de Sarabia, 7th Count of Toreno, was born there on the 26th of November, 1786. At the back of the building, there is still a small garden.

MDOMuralla de Oviedo (Oviedo’s Wall)

The Benedictine Monastery of San Pelayo was founded in the Middle Ages dedicated to St John the Baptist. However, with the transfer of the remains of St Pelagius to Oviedo to be depo-sited in this convent, it changed its name to the Monastery of San

By the early 13th century, the city had some kind of enclosure, the layout of which was ordered by Alfonso IX. Alfonso X promoted the completion of the works, which began around 1261 and must have been completed in the 14th century. The walls had a perimeter of 1,400 m enclosing an area of 11 hectares - coinciding with the area cited by F. Reiter in 1777. They followed a quasi-circular layout to adapt to the contour of the hill on

Pelayo. It is a cloistered convent that forms part of the history of Asturias, as it has managed to amass an outstanding collection of documents during its thousand years of existence and currently serves as the Provincial Historical Archives.
