In honor of LGBT Pride month, Comcast highlights

its longstanding partner Equality California—the largest statewide LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) advocacy organization in California working to secure equality for all.

For years, Comcast has supported EQCA. In 2011, through a generous grant from the Comcast Foundation and in partnership with the California LGBT Legislative Caucus, Equality California Institute announced the creation and launch of the first-ever legislative leadership fellowship program for LGBT youth in the nation—EQCAI Comcast Fellowship.

“With Equality California’s new fellowship program, LGBT college students will have wide-ranging access into the inner workings of our state government,” said Assemblymember Tom Ammiano. “As a member of California’s LGBT Caucus, I am thrilled that these students will have the opportunity to gain the insight, knowledge, and experience needed to influence the political process in our on-going struggle for equality. These fellows are our future LGBT leaders of tomorrow.”

The EQCAI Comcast Fellowship is a four-week fellowship program for students who have completed at least one year of college/university studies.

Through the fellowship participants will participate in and gain valuable experience that includes:

n A $3,000 stipend for college.

n Placement in a legislative office as an intern in a role allowing for first-hand experience in the state legislative and budget process.

n An academically designed program focused on the inner workings of California government, as well as current and future statewide policy issues.

n Opportunities for close interaction and discussion with leading state policy makers.

n Intensive training around “issues-based organizing” and the factors/strategies influencing policy makers.

n Placement assistance for a district internship after summer training ends.

To learn more about the EQCAI Comcast Fellowship visit www.eqcai.org/ n

On Saturday, May 19th, Henry Wofford, Anchor, Comcast SportsNet, was joined by many special guests in the dedication of Comcast’s new customer service center in Oakland. Assembly Member

Sandré Swanson, Mayor Jean Quan, City Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan, City Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente, and others, participated in the dedication event featuring a community celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The free event featured an appearance by Nickelodeon’s “Dora the Explorer” costume character, as well as giveaways and face painting, to celebrate the new state-of-the-art facility that will support the City of Oakland and its surrounding communities. XFINITY products, including our new Xfinity Home automated home and security service, as well as 3D TV, were demonstrated.

Designed entirely around the needs of customers, the new design features flat screen TVs, leather chairs, hardwood floors, and a home theater area where local residents can interact with service agents, return or pick up equipment, and test-drive XFINITY products at their own pace. Shoppers can also compare Internet speeds on side-by-side computer monitors and try out the company’s XFINITY Voice wireline home phone service.

The store also features a billing kiosk where customers can scan their bill and pay by cash, check or credit card without having to wait for a Customer Service Representative.

The 4,000 sq. ft. Oakland Customer Service Center employs local Bay Area residents and is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. n

Internet EssentialsSM Events

Internet EssentialsSM, provided by Comcast, has helped bridge the digital divide by connecting thousands of low-income families to the Internet

since its launch last Fall.

Comcast has partnered with organizations across the country to spread the word about Internet EssentialsSM to ensure students and their families have access to the Internet.

On May 19th, over 100 families attended the San Rafael Leadership Institute’s Computer & Internet Fair, where they were joined by San Rafael’s Vice Mayor Mike Levine, City Schools Superintendent Mike Watenpaugh, City Library Director Sara Houghton, and David Escobar from County Superintendent Steve Kinsey’s office. Houghton spoke to the families about the importance of digital literacy and broadband adoption, and the opportunities available to those who are connected to the Internet.

Families also learned about the benefits of Internet EssentialsSM and were able to apply for this valuable service. They were also entered into a raffle where five lucky families won the grand prize of a netbook computer.

Across the Bay, on May 23rd, at Wilson Elementary School in San Leandro, Comcast partnered with Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan’s office and Self Help for the Elderly to host an Internet EssentialsSM Informational Family Day. To better serve the families, simultaneous Internet EssentialsSM presentations were provided in various languages – Cantonese, English, and Spanish. Also joining the event was also San Leandro Unified School District’s Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Debbie Wong.

With the support of principal Wendy Ponder, Comcast reached out to more than 800 families about the Internet EssentialsSM program to ensure success for the students of Wilson Elementary School and their families. n
