DRIVE

DRIVECOLUMBIA GORGE LOOP

Dramatic views of the western gorge from Crown Point and Cape Horn, and of the eastern Gorge from Highway 14. Take a side trip on the Columbia River Historic Highway between Corbett and Ainsworth Park for a look at some of the most spectacular waterfalls around, including misty and majestic Multnomah Falls. From Troutdale, follow the Columbia River Scenic Highway east to Ainsworth State Park, then continue eastbound along Interstate 84 past Hood River to The Dalles. Cross The Dalles Bridge and head west on High-way 14 through Lyle, Bingen, Stevenson, North Bonneville and Camas to Interstate 205. Cross the Columbia River on Interstate 205 (Glenn Jackson Bridge) to Interstate 84, then return east to Troutdale.

MT. ADAMS LOOP Scenic, backcountry route to the foothills of Mt. Adams and the Klickitat River Canyon. From Bingen, follow High-way 141 north through White Salmon, Husum and BZ Corners to Trout Lake. Then head east on the Goldendale-Glenwood Road

through Glenwood, down the Klickitat River Canyon toward Goldendale; after you’ve climbed out of the canyon, head right back into it again by traveling south on Highway 142 to Klicki-tat and Lyle. At Lyle, head west on Highway 14 back to Bingen.

MT. HOOD LOOP Dramatic views of Mt. Hood and the scenic Hood River valley. From Hood River, follow High-way 35 south through Mt. Hood to the junction with Highway 26, then west on Highway 26 through Zigzag, Welches and Brightwood to Gresham. From Gresham, head north to Interstate 84 and the return trip to Hood River. To extend the trip, take a side trip from Government Camp, go-ing up the mountain to historic Timberline Lodge.

EAST SIDE LOOPBroad vistas of wide open wheatfields, Deschutes River Canyon and juniper rangelands of the eastern Cascades. From The Dalles, head south on Highway 197 through Dufur, Tygh Valley and Maupin to the junction with Highway 97. Then go northeast on Highway 97 to

the historic community of Shan-iko, continuing north through Grass Valley and Moro to Biggs Junction and Interstate 84 for the return journey westbound to The Dalles. Worthwhile extensions to this loop may be made by traveling farther south on Highway 97 to the Highway 216 junction, then back north through Antelope to Shaniko. Or keep traveling south on Highway 97 to Madras, then follow Highway 26 northwest to Warm Springs and the junc-tion with Highway 216. Follow Highway 216 east to Highway 197 near Maupin and the return journey north to The Dalles.

SHORTER ROUTES

ROWENA LOOPS These offer spectacular driv-ing on the eastern end of the Historic Columbia River Highway. Start at Mosier or The Dalles for a combination of up-close and panoramic views that regularly draw car companies to film their commercials. For variety, loop back on the State Road-Seven-mile Hill route for spectacular panoramas of both the eastern and central Columbia Gorge.

DALLES MOUNTAIN ROAD An unpaved route through a working cattle ranch, deeded by its last owners to the state of Washington. The ranch is now part of Columbia Hills State Park and the ranch house is a departure point for hikes and offers occasional historical and interpretive programs. The rug-ged road itself travels through spectacular viewing for wildflow-ers and wildlife. At the crest of the Columbia Hills it meets up with paved roads toward Cen-terville and Goldendale. From Interstate 84, turn north at The Dalles Exit 85 onto Highway 197, turn right at the junction of 197 and Washington Highway 14, then take the next left.

HOOD RIVER FRUIT LOOPA picturesque trip through the orchard country of rural Hood River County. From the Hood River Bridge exit, travel south on Highway 35 to the community of Mount Hood, turn right through Parkdale and the take the Dee Highway back to Hood River.

OREGON

Eagle Creek Trail #440Length: 13.1 mile with gradual climb of 3,200 feet (most of this elevation gain is concentrated in switchbacks near the end of the trail). Dramatic trail, much of it cut in the rock bluffs above Eagle Creek. Punchbowl Falls is one common turnaround, at 2.1 miles. (This is a very popu-lar trail, especially the first few miles. Expect to find many other hikers.) Trail is not suitable for young children or dogs because of vertical drop-offs. Access: Exit 41 eastbound from Interstate 84, or Exit 40 west-bound and loop back east on the freeway to Exit 41. From Eagle Creek Fish Hatchery, follow the access road south to trailhead

WATERFALLSThey make great places for a picnic, and best of all, quite often they’re just a short walk from your car. They’re the waterfalls of the Columbia River Gorge, and they deserve a place on your family’s vacation calendar.

Vertical basalt walls along the Gorge are graced with the great-est concentration of waterfalls in North America, particularly along the Oregon side of the western Gorge. It’s a matter of geology, not coincidence. The ancestral Columbia Gorge was a V-shaped river valley, but beginning around 15,000 years ago (at the end of the latest ice age) a series of tremendous

COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE VISITOR’S GUIDE 2015 11

floods swept westward from a glacial lake near the present-day border of Idaho and Montana. These “Bretz” floods, named after one of the geologists who discovered their traces, ripped the topsoil from eastern Washington and carved away at the valley walls of the Columbia Gorge, leaving steep ramparts and tributaries abruptly hanging in midair. The flood cycles lasted for thou-sands of years. Many more thousands of years have passed since the last flood, and each winter brought an-other freeze-thaw cycle, sculpt-ing away the rock behind those waterfalls. As a result, several waterfalls now plunge into semi-circular amphitheaters; others fall out into midair, to be wafted away on the wind. Most waterfalls are limited to the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge because landslides modify the steepness on the Washington side. The entire region’s bedrock material is tilted

slightly southward. When it’s saturated by water, the upper basaltic layers on the north side of the river slide into the gorge. The greatest number of water-falls is accessible from a portion of the old Columbia River Highway (Hwy. 30), which can be reached from Interstate 84.If you’re coming from Portland, take Exit 17 at Troutdale, Exit 18 from Lewis & Clark State Park, Exit 22 from Corbett, Exit 28 from Bridal Veil, or if you’re coming from the east, take the Dodson, Bridal Veil or Corbett exits. Some waterfall views require a short hike.

OREGON

Multnomah Falls Access: car or hike. After Yosemite Falls, this is the tallest falls in North America. Two million visitors a year flock to see this 620-foot plunge, fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain. Its highest flow is during winter and spring. Five

flows of Yakima basalt are visible in the fall’s cliff face. You can view the falls from your car, or take a network of trails up the falls. There’s also fine dining at Mult-nomah Falls Lodge (built in 1925 and on the National Register of Historic Places) and informa-tion at Multnomah Falls Visitor Center.Access: From I-84, take exit 31 to the freeway parking lot. For handicapped accessibility, take the old Columbia River Scenic Highway (Hwy 30). Horsetail FallsAccess: car or hike. This 176-foot waterfall plunges into a pool right beside the Columbia River Scenic Highway; it’s also visible through a cor-ridor cut through vegetation to Interstate 84, 2½ miles east of Multnomah Falls.

Triple FallsAccess: 1.7-mile hike. Not a series of falls, but rather three parallel chutes ranging from 100 to 135 feet tall. The viewpoint is located on Oneonta Trail #424, 1.7 miles from the trailhead, which is just under a mile from Horsetail Falls Trail-head #438. Both are located on the Columbia River Scenic High-way east of Multnomah Falls.

Metlako FallsAccess: 1½-mile hike.To see this 150-foot plunge falls, hike 1½ miles from the trailhead of Eagle Creek Trail #440 at Eagle Creek Park. It was named in 1915 after the legend-ary Indian goddess of salmon. Reach Eagle Creek Trail by taking Exit 41 eastbound, or Exit 40 westbound and loop back east on the freeway to Exit 41. From Eagle Creek Fish Hatchery, follow the access road south to the trailhead parking area. (A word of caution, though: this is a very precipitous hike, and is not advised for young children or off-leash dogs.)

Punchbowl FallsAccess: 2.1-mile hike.Frequently pictured on Columbia Gorge photographic calendars, Punchbowl is located on Eagle Creek Trail #440 2.1 miles south of the trailhead. (This is .06 miles past Metlako Falls; use same freeway directions.) There’s an access trail leading off the main trail to the base of

Punchbowl Falls, which plunges spectacularly 10 to 15 feet into a basin.

Wahclella FallsAccess: Half-mile hike. This tiered, thunderous water-fall is in the Tanner Creek area. Upper drop is 15 to 25 feet, with the lower falls about 50 to 70 feet. Take Exit 40 (Bonneville Dam) and proceed south several hundred yards to Tanner Creek Trail parking area. Hike a half mile to trail’s end at the falls. East Fork Falls can also be seen streaming above the descent from a vantage on the west side of Tanner Creek.

Wah-kee-na FallsAccess: car. This is a 242-foot tiered waterfall (the Yakama name translates as “most beautiful”) and located half a mile west of Multnomah Falls on the Historic Columbia River Scenic Highway. A picnic area is nearby.

Fairy FallsAccess: 1.1-mile hike. This ‘fan’ falls is just 20-30 feet high, located along Wah-kee-na Creek, 1.1 miles up from the trail-head of Wah-kee-na Trail #420. Access trailhead at Wah-kee-na Falls, a half mile west of Mult-nomah Falls on Historic Colum-bia River Scenic Highway.

Elowah Falls//McCord Creek FallsAccess: short hike.Separate waterfalls located on McCord Creek, a short hike east of the Nesmith Mountain trail-head. The upper falls features a natural amphitheatre. Take Exit 35 (Dodson) from Interstate 84, east of Multnomah Falls; the trailhead is located just before the eastbound freeway on-ramp.

Latourell FallsAccess: car or short hike.A 249-foot plunge falls in Guy W. Talbot State Park, 3.4 miles west of Exit 28 off Interstate 84. It’s a

short walk to the viewpoint from the park’s picnic area. Named af-ter Joseph Latourell, a prominent Columbia River Gorge settler.

Upper Latourell FallsAccess: .08-mile hike.A 75 to 100-foot plunge that is nearly a one-mile hike along the trail from Latourell Falls. It’s pos-sible to walk behind the falling water at this scenic spot.

Bridal Veil FallsCar or short hike.Bridal Veil Creek abruptly drops twice in a tiered waterfall. The upper falls is between 60 and 100 feet tall, the lower from 40 to 60 feet in height.
