The Fireflies entered the ninth inning trailing by three, but put together five runs in the final frame to come out on top. Mark Vientos hit a two-run bomb to left to ignite the comeback. Later in the inning, Chandler Avant drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-run single, and Ronny Mauricio provided insurance with an RBI single of his own. THRICE AS NICE: The two-run single by Avant in the ninth was not the only hit the Alabama native had in Thursday night s victory. The Fireflies utility man also had base hits in the third and eighth innings. Since being recalled to Columbia on May 6th, Avant is hitting .313, a team-best by Fireflies hitters during that span. GETTING CRAFTY: Andrew Mitchell may describe himself as a craftylefty, but thats not a knock on his stuff on the mound. The southpaw reliever has tossed seven consecutive scoreless innings out of the pen, while striking out 12 and only allowing two hits during the streak. HOT STREAK: After a 9-23 start to the season, the Fireflies enter tonights contest in Rome winning six of their last eight games, including a double-header sweep against Rome last Monday. The Fireflies have a 7-2 record against the Braves thus far this season, and have yet to drop a series against Rome. FOLLOW THE LAW: Keith Law, senior baseball writer at ESPN, ranked Colum- bias roster as the 7th-most Loaded Rosterin all of Minor League Baseball. Law recognized the fact Columbias roster includes the Metsthird, fourth and fifth-rated prospects (infielders Ronny Mauricio, Mark Vientos and Shervyen Newton, respectively), New Yorks past two second-round draft choices (RHP Simeon Woods-Richardson, Vientos) and the systems ninth-rated prospect, left-hander Thomas Szapucki (drafted in the fifth round in 2015). The roster also features 26th (Baseball America) and 27th-rated prospects Chris Viall and Christian James. The prospect rankings are according to MLB.com unless otherwise noted. NEW STAFF: Fireflies second-year manager Pedro Lopez notwithstanding, Columbia has an entirely different coaching staff in 2019. Former big leaguer and Mets pitcher Royce Ring assumes the role as pitching coach and former Eastern League champion Luis Rivera is the new hitting coach. One-time Mets farmhand (and former player for Lopez in Binghamton in 2014) Gilbert Gomez is the teams first-ever bench coach. Daichi Arima (athletic trainer), Sam Nickel- sen (strength and conditioning coach), Nicole Collins (assistant athletic trainer) and Dave Williams (mental skills coach) complete the Fireflies coaching staff in 2019. On January 17, 2018, the New York Mets named two-time Eastern League (AA) Manager of

the Year Pedro Lopez the next Fireflies skipper. The 2019 season marks Lopez’s second

season as manager of the Fireflies, his 12th as a skipper in the Mets minor league system and

his 17th overall. Lopez has managed every full-season level of the Mets system and picked up

his 900th career managerial win on June 22, 2018 at home against the Lakewood BlueClaws.

The 2013 Eastern League Manager of the Year has accumulated 929 wins (19th-most among

active MiLB managers) over 17 years as a manager and has guided dozens of future big

leaguers including Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Edinson Volquez. In

fact, Lopez has guided his teams to the playoffs in six of his 11 years in the Mets system.

The 50-year-old led the double-A Binghamton Mets (now Rumble Ponies) to one of the most

prolific stretches in the club’s history from 2012 to 2016. The ’B-Mets’ won the 2014 Eastern

League crown and Lopez was inducted into the Binghamton Baseball Shrine the

following year (2015). The 2013 campaign was stellar as well. The Vega Baja, Puerto Rico,

native guided the B-Mets to a franchise-record 86 victories and a playoff appearance. He is the winningest manager in Binghamton

Mets history.

Lopez enjoyed a lengthy playing career before joining the

coaching ranks. The former catcher and infielder was

drafted in 1988 by the San Diego Padres out of Arizona

Western College in the 21st round. Lopez played 13 years

of Minor League Baseball in the Padres (1988-1994),

Milwaukee Brewers (1995-96) and Houston Astros (1997-

2000) organizations. He tallied 690 hits and 338 RBIs in

909 professional games. Lopez not only coached in the

South Atlantic League (Savannah, 2010 and 2001)

previously, but played in the league as well in 1990 as a

21-year-old for the Charleston Rainbows.

Before joining the Mets organization, Lopez spent seven

seasons (2001-07) managing and coaching in the Texas

Rangers organization.

Lopez and his wife, Gladys, have twins: Leslian Marie and

Laney Marie. They live in Puerto Rico during the winter.
