Columbia County Association for Home and Community Education August 2016 President’s Message Changing With Today Hello to all my HCE friends! Today I am waing for the severe weather pre- dicted. I think it is going to go elsewhere. REMEMBERING THE PAST The month of August brings to us the crop of wild blackberries. I remember Mom and Dad always squeezed an aſternoon of wild blackberry picking into our busy summer. When the day came, we needed to prepare. In order to protect ourselves, we had to ouit ourselves with tough, long den- im jeans and long-sleeved shirts. Work shoes and heavy cloth or leather caps were the best. This armor protected us from both the thorns and the mosquitoes. Everyone, including the dogs, Derby and Trixie, would pile on to the chore cart that was aached to the tractor and head for the woods. Gallon- sized honey pails were the preferred container to use for picking because the handle could be aached to the belt, allowing two-handed pick- ing. One year a brother substuted an empty oatmeal box for the honey pail. Disaster struck when the moist blackberries caused the boom to give way and the enre picking dumped com- pletely out while he was walking along the trunk of a fallen tree. He could not save a single black- berry, and while we felt a lile sorry for him, we all laughed anyway. When it came me to return home, some of us were quite a distance away from Mother, so she would cup her hands, blow into them and create a whistle that could be heard for some distance. We knew to head for the tractor with our gallons of blackberries. As I picked the blackberries, I was always afraid there might be snakes crawling around and over my feet. It probably never happened. LOOKING FORWARD Wild berry picking. What else would there be? WILD GATHERINGS! Aſter spending a day picking the wild blackber- ries, my mother would can most of them and make a batch or two of jelly. They are almost too seedy to make jam. Blackberry benefits: 1. 62 calories per cup 2. More fiber than a cup of bran flakes 3. If you are in need of quick energy, black- berries are what you need 4. The fiber in blackberries will keep you full unl your next meal 5. Helps to protect you cardiovascular system 6. Eang blackberries will help a lot with mind and motor skills as we age 7. Eang blackberries promotes good oral health All of the benefits were listed on numerous websites. The website cooks.com has a lot of great-tasng recipes. Let me know what you make and how good it is. Blackberries are beauful in a fruit salad. Their color really lets you know they are in the mix. UNUSUAL EVENT Are you lucky enough to finish a project with just enough of the right material? I managed to add a border to a quilt and my leſtover piece of fabric was less than an inch in length. So many mes this would happen to my mother and she would say it always happened to Gramma Drake. Does this happen to others or are we just lucky? Kay MacLeish Columbia County HCE President

Changing With Today

Hello to all my HCE friends Today I am waiting for the severe weather pre-dicted I think it is going to go elsewhere REMEMBERING THE PAST The month of August brings to us the crop of wild blackberries I remember Mom and Dad always squeezed an afternoon of wild blackberry picking into our busy summer When the day came we needed to prepare In order to protect ourselves we had to outfit ourselves with tough long den-im jeans and long-sleeved shirts Work shoes and heavy cloth or leather caps were the best This armor protected us from both the thorns and the mosquitoes Everyone including the dogs Derby and Trixie would pile on to the chore cart that was attached to the tractor and head for the woods Gallon-sized honey pails were the preferred container to use for picking because the handle could be attached to the belt allowing two-handed pick-ing One year a brother substituted an empty oatmeal box for the honey pail Disaster struck when the moist blackberries caused the bottom to give way and the entire picking dumped com-pletely out while he was walking along the trunk of a fallen tree He could not save a single black-berry and while we felt a little sorry for him we all laughed anyway When it came time to return home some of us were quite a distance away from Mother so she would cup her hands blow into them and create a whistle that could be heard for some distance We knew to head for the tractor with our gallons of blackberries As I picked the blackberries I was always afraid there might be snakes crawling around and over my feet It probably never happened

LOOKING FORWARD Wild berry picking What else would there be WILD GATHERINGS After spending a day picking the wild blackber-ries my mother would can most of them and make a batch or two of jelly They are almost too seedy to make jam Blackberry benefits 1 62 calories per cup 2 More fiber than a cup of bran flakes 3 If you are in need of quick energy black-

berries are what you need 4 The fiber in blackberries will keep you full until your next meal 5 Helps to protect you cardiovascular system 6 Eating blackberries will help a lot with mind

and motor skills as we age 7 Eating blackberries promotes good oral health All of the benefits were listed on numerous websites The website cookscom has a lot of great-tasting recipes Let me know what you make and how good it is Blackberries are beautiful in a fruit salad Their color really lets you know they are in the mix UNUSUAL EVENT Are you lucky enough to finish a project with just enough of the right material I managed to add a border to a quilt and my leftover piece of fabric was less than an inch in length So many times this would happen to my mother and she would say it always happened to Gramma Drake Does this happen to others or are we just lucky Kay MacLeish Columbia County HCE President
