Not a lot of people can say theyknow the history behind thecity they live in. But in

Columbia, residents have the opportunityto learn more about their city byattending Columbia Association’sBikeAbout event.CA will hold its 11th annualBikeAbout on Saturday, May 14 at theDowntown Columbia Lakefront.Bikers can begin their learningexpedition across Columbia between9:30 and 10:30am. BikeAbout alsooffers a walking tour that will begin at10:30am.Created by CA’s Columbia Archivesand Open Space Division, BikeAboutbrings history, nature and bicycliststogether in an event that celebratesColumbia. Every year, up to 300bicyclists ride through Columbia’spathways to learn about Columbia’shistory. This year, the event willhighlight areas like the BMX track inHarper’s Choice, Hobbit’s Glen GolfCourse and the mid-20th century

contemporary architecture of the homesof the Birches section in Wild Lake. The walking tour allows non-bikers tobe part of the fun. A new route hasbeen added that takes walkers acrossthe Route 29 pedestrian bridge andinto Oakland Mills to explore a historiccemetery.“The goal of BikeAbout is two-fold,” said Barbara Kellner, director ofthe Columbia Archives, “to enjoy thebeautiful paths of Columbia that windthrough woods, along stream beds andthrough neighborhoods and to learnthe history of Columbia.”The event is free and open to all.Columbia is the ideal community forsuch a successful event because it hasan attentive Open Space Division thatkeeps the pathways in great conditionsand an archive that has treasuredColumbia’s history for years, saidKellner.BikeAbout spreads not only historyto Columbia residents, but the idea ofalternate transportation as well.

“Bicycling is inexpensive, it burns lotsof calories and it doesn't do anythingto pollute the air. BikeAbout, inshowing the connectivity of the pathsand streets, hopefully informs peoplethat you can get from point A to pointB by bicycle,” said Kellner. So there you have it, if you are

looking for an all-day learning experienceand a fun-in-the-sun activity, BikeAboutis where you want to be. After all, withgas prices so high, a day of bikingmight help you save a few dollars! For more information about BikeAbout,
