MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2017 ‘Colours of Australia’ art competition decorates Crowne Plaza with students’ art By Faten Omar T he Australian Embassy, in cooperation with Kuwait Times, held an award ceremony for the “Colours of Australia” art competition on Tuesday at Crowne Plaza Hotel. “More than 6,500 students of both genders participated by drawing expressive pieces about Australia, its civilization, heritage and colors that were magnificent and beautiful, making it tough for the officiating committee to make a fair and just decision to decide the winner,” said Adnan Saad, Kuwait Times Deputy General Manager. Saad noted that the goal behind the contest is to have students reflect their feelings and knowledge about the landmarks and colors Australia enjoys in the form of its beautiful nature and civilized heritage mixed with its culture. Animals, birds, forests and the beauty of its coasts, cuisine and fruits were expressed in the drawings of Kuwait’s students in water, oil and acrylic colors. Warren Hauck, Australian Ambassador to Kuwait, said the “Colours of Australia” idea was about finding a theme that captures the land, animals and people of Australia. “We wanted the theme to give people some idea of the diversity within Australia. It is something that we are extremely proud of. Australia’s diversity and its openness to cultures and people is its real strength. I’m pleased that students had the chance to explore some of these themes in their drawings.” The representatives of VIVA, Hessa Alsabe, Dr Osama Al-Jamal from ACK, and Antion Fluty General Manager of Crowne Plaza “Al-Thuraya City” opened the student art competition image gallery. “Colours of Australia through student’s eyes,” a film prepared by Sherif Ismail, Kuwait Times Art Director, was screened, and Hai Wei Li, a Chinese boy and a multi- instrumentalist, sang a Kuwaiti song that stunned the audience. Abd Al-Kareem Al-Enizi, Svetlana Arndt and Eleanor Hale were the jury members, who are professional artists selected from the Kuwait Arts Association, who chose the top 10 winners in each age group. Ambassador Hauck and Editor-in- Chief of Kuwait Times Abd Al-Rahman Al-Alyan concluded the event by distributing certificates of appreciation to the principals and art teachers of various schools that participated in the competition. Awards and prizes were distributed to the winners by the VIP guests and sponsors as part of the closing ceremony.
