CASE IN POINTWatercolor pencils let you create almost-custom colors—the pink of the flowers is from the same pencil, just softened at the outer edges with a blender pen. Pencil holder: holes drilled in top of painted wood block, pictures adhered with decoupage medium.

FINE TIMEThis pretty-yet-practical DIY lends itself to freehand designs or coloring pages. Cut a hole in a piece of frame-size foam board, and adhere your picture to it. Then secure it to the frame, and assemble the clock according to the package instructions.

Tip: Clean blender pens and pencils before switching to a new color by scribbling on a piece of paper until they draw

clear again.

SET THE SCENEThe key to coloring pages that belong on the wall is to take the less-is-more approach. For our birdie design, that meant a muted four-color palette and plenty of white space.

ON THE BLENDThis botanical beauty got its textural, shaded look from a blender pencil. It’s a good idea to test how colors react together when blended—the final color may not be exactly what you had in mind, so play around with different combinations and levels of pressure.

BLENDER PENS & PENCILS• Blender pens are designed for use with watercolor pencils, whereas blender pencils are to be used with regular colored pencils.

• Blender pens have a marker type tip that helps blend and tone down colors.
