I hope everyone who attended the PGA Teach-ing & Coaching Summit and the PGA Merchan-

dise Show had a productive week of sharing ideas with your fellow PGA Professionals, as well as see-ing the latest and greatest in equipment, apparel and other products in advance of the 2015 golf season. As you have seen over the past month, the Mission Statement of the PGA of America is to Serve Our Mem-bers and Grow the Game. The Long-Term Strategic Plan defines the eight Core Business Products of the Associ-ation, with two of those being Player Development and Sections.

Below are a few examples that illustrate the Mission Statement and how both Player Development and Sections are benefitting from this focused approach. With these and other important initiatives, PGA Pro-fessionals will be further viewed as the leaders at your facility in growing the game. Furthermore, for those PGA members who enjoy playing tournament golf, the relationship with our partners such as OMEGA and National Car Rental are providing additional playing opportunities, enhanced prize money and greater rec-ognition of your playing ability.

Drive, Chip and Putt Championship This past month, The Masters, the PGA of America and the USGA announced the local and regional qualifying dates for the 2016 Drive, Chip and Putt Cham-pionship, with the finals set for April 3, 2016, at Augusta National Golf Club, on the eve of Masters Week. This year, 255 facilities will host a maximum of 200 juniors, thus reaching tens of thousands through the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship. Even if you are not hosting a Local Qualifying Event, you have a great

opportunity to conduct your own Junior Play-er Development programs by incorporating a Drive, Chip and Putt clinic for your youngsters prior to them participating at the Section level. Think of it as a Drive, Chip and Putt  Training Camp! The driving force behind the coordination of the local events is the Section Staff and the host PGA Professional and their Staff.  Thanks to all of you who are involved and committed to this outstanding initiative. Finally, please contact your Section Executive Director to volunteer your time at one of the local events in your Section.

OMEGA As part of its support of grow-ing the game of golf and the PGA of America, OMEGA will become the Presenting Sponsor of the National PGA Profession-al Player of the Year awards.

OMEGA and the PGA of America also have worked to craft a program to support the Sections, which will receive $10,000 for name-in-title sponsorship of their various PGA Player of the Year awards (e.g. – OMEGA Colorado Section Player of the Year). The $10,000 is to be used as additional monies for those individuals recognized as Section Players of the Year.

ewsletterSince their inception, GolfNow has pitched their

“barter a tee time per day in exchange for “free” service.” In actuality, this service cost our Colorado facilities an average of $28k in revenue made by Golf-Now through the sale of these tee times for providing this “free” service. It used to be that the “barter” tee times were mixed in with other available tee times. The barter tee time was easy to pick out as it is priced very low and has a “Hot Deal” icon. Also on the same page were offers from other courses nearby. Not only were facilities competing with every course in the area, they were competing with GolfNow selling their barter “Hot Deals”. While this infuriated many owners, others say that the additional exposure was worth it and did bring them new business – either way, at least their non-barter times were listed and they had a shot at selling them. No matter what it might actually cost you?

Last year, the Colorado Section was granted permission by the PGA of America to launch our very own Tee Time Network to help our PGA Professionals and the facilities combat these tactics. Af-ter months of research by a panel of Colorado PGA Professionals and Indus-try Leaders, the Colora-do PGA entered into an agreement with Quick18. The company provides our PGA Professionals state-of-the-art technolo-gy where facilities can take back ownership of their tee sheet and maximize their revenue through the sale of their own tee sheet inventory for a fixed cost. These facilities set their own price! Additionally, the Colora-

do PGA owns the license for this technolo-gy throughout the entire area defined as the Colorado Sec-tion by the PGA of Amer-ica.

In less than one year’s time it gives me great pleasure to in-form you that through the t e c h n o l o g y provided to our thirteen fa-cilities, that over 108,000 reservations were made; over 245,000 rounds of golf were played; and over $10.9 mil-lion in revenue was generated. Now just to be clear, the majority of these reservations were not booked through ColoradoPGATeeTimes.com. They were booked through the facilities own booking options. These facilities took back ownership of their tee sheet and divorced them-selves of third-party companies like GolfNow who made an exorbitant amount of money and profit for what they actually provide in service.

Looking ahead to the coming season, GolfNow has upped their game. They have very cleverly rolled out LastMinuteGolfer.com with iPhone and Android apps. Now, each and every one of those barter times is in one

convenient place for the golfer. The owner/opera-tor no longer even has a seat at the table as none of your full price tee times are listed– you may have just bartered yourself out of business! How “FREE” is that service that Golf-Now is providing you?

Just recently I had a con-versation with a PGA Professional from Arizona who

America and our 41 Sections. Through sponsorship funding for the 2015 National Car Rental PGA Pro Am Series, each Section will receive $15,000 for its spon-sorship of two Pro Am Series events.

National Car Rental also will continue to sponsor the National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship. These are a few examples of the work the national PGA leadership has accomplished over the past few years.

Always keep in mind -- your support and “thank you” notes to these sponsors are very much appreciated and assist in future sponsorship agreements.

Player Development Finally, as we begin the countdown for the 2015 golf season and are planning your Player Development activities, please utilize the invaluable resources of your National PGA Player Development Staff. Mike O’Donnell is the Senior Director for Player Devel-opment, and I know that Mike is more than willing to assist you or direct you to the appropriate Player De-velopment Staff member to help design and plan your program. Or in our case in Colorado, we have Keith So-riano who is one of the leaders in assisting you develop and design your Player Development programs. I would also encourage you to call your Section Award winners who have developed programs to bring more individuals to the game. They are another great re-source to help you grow the game. In closing, if you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to email me at kah57 @me.com. I am happy to assist you.

With best wishes!

was one of the first facilities to come on board with thestart-up of GolfNow about fourteen years ago. He stat-ed to me that at that point it was of great benefit to him to use them as they provided technology and a means that was very inexpensive. Over time he began to ques-tion what it was actually costing him to use their tech-nology and service.

He went on to tell me about a recent phone call he re-ceived while he was in his golf shop helping behind his counter, something he normally does not do. Upon an-swering the phone the caller asked him “what condition is the golf course in”? “Had it been recently aerified or over-seeded”? The PGA Professional responded that the golf course was in perfect shape and asked why all the questions on course condition. The caller respond-ed that he saw this great deal on GolfNow for $11 green fees at 10am and wanted to know if there was some-thing wrong with the golf course. The PGA Professional told him he better grab it because every other tee time is going for $85. It was at this point that the PGA Pro-fessional decided it was time to divorce GolfNow, be-cause if this type of call came in during the rare time he was behind the counter, how many other times does this happen.

If you are currently with GolfNow or are considering join-ing the twenty (20) facilities that are currently planning on using the technology provided through ColoradoPG-ATeeTimes.com, please give me a call. I’d be glad to set up a time to meet with you along with Jeff Bryant, our Quick 18 Representative, so you can learn more about using the technology available to you to take back own-ership of your tee sheet.

Each season the Tournament Committee and the staff work together to create and produce a tour-

nament schedule that adds to the value of being a PGA Member. Events are scheduled to provide a variety of competition and fun, enjoyable events. The addition of some new host facilities and a change in some formats will hopefully create just that in 2015.

With many quality golf courses on the schedule, one new venue highlights the 2015 schedule. The Golf Club at Ravenna, the much talked about Jay Morrish de-signed golf course, situated between the red rocks and deep ravines of the Dakota Hogback and Pike National Forest, will host the Pro-Pro-Pro Championship. This event, scheduled later in the year than in the past, will take place on Monday, June 15, 2015.

Other notable facility highlights include the Sanctuary in Sedalia hosting, for the second year in a row, the Pro Assistant. Meridian Golf Club returns to the Section Championship rotation and will host September 14-16, 2015. Aspen Glen Golf Club also returns to the sched-ule as they will host the 2015 West Chapter Champi-onship the following week on September 21-22, 2015. And finally, Colorado Golf Club will again host the Myran Craig Championship on Monday, May 18, 2015.

There are three new Stroke Play events on the sched-ule for 2015. Indian Peaks Golf Club will host the first of the three on April 6, 2015. The event will feature an individual Stroke Play and optional Blind Draw Team Game. On April 21, 2015 Raccoon Creek Golf Course will host the second Stroke Play event. There will be an individual contest as well as a Team Stroke Play con-tent. And finally, on May 13, Legacy Ridge Golf Course will host the final event, a three-person ABC Blind Draw contest. For more details on any of these events, please check out their Tournament Information Page.

The committee took time to evaluate the format at all of the Pro Ams. New ideas were tossed around and the committee decided to make some changes to the schedule. In 2015 formats will include the Birdie Bash at Valley Country Club, a Low Gross/Low Net Shamble at the Club at Pradera, and much more. Take a look at the diagram to see what team format will be played at each event and for more details, check out each Tour-nament Information Page.

Another new addition to the 2015 season is the cre-ation of a season-long Team Challenge. This event is much like Fantasy Football in that captains will pick their teams and the scores from those players will add up to a total team score. For more information on this exciting new event, please keep reading.

Finally, a significant change has come to the 2015 Match Play Championship. Upon registration clos-ing, match play pods will be created and round-robin matches will take place with four players, in similar geographical locations, in each pod. For more details on this change and other changes set for 2015, keep reading this edition of the Pro Peaks Digital Newsletter.

This year the Colorado PGA Match Play Champi-onship will take on a new look, very similar to the

format now being utilized by the World Golf Champi-onships – Cadillac Match Play. The Colorado PGA will move to round-robin play for the first three matches be-ing played amongst Professionals in general proximity of one another. We feel this will increase participation and grow camaraderie amongst Colorado PGA Profes-sionals.

Just like the WGC, with a 64 player field, the Colora-do PGA will divide the field into 16 four-player pods. Professionals will be placed into a group either by their home or facility address. Pods will be seeded accord-ing to the previous year’s Player of the Year Points and are subject to approval of a three person sub-com-mittee consisting of Don Graham, Barry Milstead and Justin Limon. Each pod will play round-robin matches within their group from May-July 31st. Each player will be responsible for scheduling each individual match

in this 3-month time frame between each player in the pod. One point will be awarded for each match won. If a match is not completed by the end of July, the player will not earn any points towards round-robin play for that match. The winners from each group will fill out the Round of 16, which is to be played during August. Once the Round of 16 is complete, a facility that has yet to be announced will host the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final Matches in the month of September.

Tune into the WGC-Cadillac Match Play coming up April 27-May 3 at TPC Harding Park and see how the new format plays out. Also, don’t forget to register for the Colorado PGA Match Play Championship; deadline is Friday, May 1st, 2015 and groups will be released the following Wednesday, May 6th, 2015.

Visit the Tournament Information Page for more infor-mation regarding the Colorado PGA Match Play Cham-pionship.

Match Play Championship to Include Pods

How payouts are dispersed among winners in Colo-rado PGA Pro-Am and Pro-Only events will change

this year The Board of Directors approved two separate modifications to the Colorado PGA Tournament Rules & Regulations.

First, Pro-Am events payouts have not changed and will remain at a payout of 40% of the starting field. However, if more Professionals or teams are tied for a

position so that an equal distribution would result in a payout which pays more than 40% of the starting field, a match of cards will resolve the positions of those tied until all tied positions are so determined.

Second, Pro-Only events have been modified from a payout of 40% of the starting field to a payout of 33% of the starting field.

Payout Percentage to Change

The Tournament Committee annually reviews the point distribution for every event on the tournament

schedule. Their goal is to ensure that points are award-ed on an equitable basis and that the level of points that can be earned fits the importance of the event. The end goal of the review is to make sure competitors are rec-ognized for their outstanding play throughout the year.

With that said, the following changes have been ap-proved by the Board of Directors:- West Chapter Championship – Increase from 800 points to 1,200 points- Stroke Play Championship – Increase from 800 points to 1,200 points- Season Championship – Increase from 800 points to 1,200 points- Colorado Open Championships – 200 Bonus points to players making the cut

The Colorado PGA is launching a new, season-long Team Challenge for 2015 will the goal of creating a

fun competition that builds camaraderie along the way. The event will feature team captains, based off the 2014 Dow Finsterwald Player of the Year standings, who will draft teams of five or six other members, based off the number that register. Five events throughout the year will count towards the Team Challenge. How It Works• Teams of CPGA professionals are drafted by cap-tains then compete in 5 events over the course of the season.

• Team captains are determined by the final 2014 CPGA Player of the Year points list.

• Teams will be formed in increments of 5 or 6 play-ers (i.e. If 50 players there will be 10 teams of 5. If 60 players there will be 10 teams.

• A player must play in at least 4 of the 5 events to be eligible for prize money. Missing more than one event will constitute forfeiture of any winnings with no reimbursement of the entry fee. Missing one event will forfeit the appropriate percentage of winnings (i.e. If a team of 5 wins $1000 and one player misses one event that player would receive $160 (80% of the winnings) and the remaining players would receive $210 each.)

Entry Fee• $100 (90% gets paid out, 10% administration fee)

Points • The Low Team Challenge professional will receive points totaling the number of overall Team Challenge professionals registered multiplied by two (2.) A point distribution schedule will be determined with the highest scoring professional receiving no less than 10 points. No points will be awarded for no shows.

Draft Party Information• April 2 at The Links Golf Course | Dinner and Cock-tails 6:00 | Draft 7:00

• Team Captains must be present for draft party, attendance is recommended however optional for all other registered professionals.

Team Challenge Events: • April 13 | Valley Country Club Pro Am

• May 11 | National Car Rental Columbine CC Pro Am

• June 8 | National Car Rental Glenmoor CC Pro Lady

• July 6 | The Club at Pradera Pro Am

• August 10 | Blackstone Country Club Pro Am

Over the past few seasons the Colorado PGA has adopted BlueGolf for all of our registration and

communications needs. This provides our members one consistent medium to register for events and to re-ceive communication.

Below you will find a quick tutorial on some frequently asked BlueGolf questions. To begin each of these tuto-rials, members will need to first login to BlueGolf. This can be done on ColoradoPGA.com or by clicking here.

How Do I Update My Profile Picture?

For those of you that had their picture taken at the 2014 Spring Meeting, your profile in BlueGolf has been updated with your picture. For those of you, who would like to update your picture, once you have logged in to your account, simply click on your image or the silhouette next to your name. Once you click the image, you can upload any image of yourself that you want and BlueGolf will automatically resize it and add it to your profile. It is really as easy as attaching an image to an email.

How Do I Add My Social Media Profile?

Adding your social media profiles to BlueGolf enables Colorado PGA staff to feature you on those platforms. Once you have logged in to your profile, simply click on the pencil tool to the right of your name and contact information and at the bottom. Once there, scroll to the bottom of the Contact Information form and paste in your Facebook, Twitter, or Goofle+ Page url.

How Do I Print a Receipt?

Once a member has logged into their account, viewing and printing a receipt is just a few clicks away. Under the navigation button “Tournaments”, members can find the “Transactions” button. By clicking on this but-ton and the date of the event, members can access a receipt for their payment.

There are two important notes to remember. First, if your transaction was refunded, you can only view the transaction, not print a receipt that reflects the refund.

Second, all transactions are listed under the name of the member who was registered, regardless who the card belongs to.

How Registration Works

Registration for all of our Col-orado PGA Tournament runs from the opening date, this year Monday, February 16, 2015, until five days prior to an event at 11:59am (just before noon.) Depending on the number of registrants for an event, regis-tration extensions may be granted and will typically run through three days prior to an event, again closing at 11:59am.

The field size for each event is mutually agreed upon by the Section and the host facility. The field size is set to maximize participation while making sure that the course is not overloaded with competitors. The field size can be found on the registration page for event.

A wait list for each event is set to a maximum of 10 registrants to give late registrants the option of adding their name while also providing realistic expectations as to whether entry into an event is possible.

How Do Entry Fees Work?

Events are typically setup with a deposit and bal-ance. Once the deposit has been received a member will gain entry into an event. Per the Rules and Reg-ulations, three days (72 hours) prior to the event the balance of the transaction will be processed.

When Can I Cancel?

Members can cancel from an event at any time prior to the registration deadline and incur no cancellation fee. If a member must cancel after the deadline has closed but before three days (72 hours) prior to the event, they are charged $25. Any cancellation after the balance of the entry has been charged will result in no refund. The refund and cancellation policy is different for the National Championships.

How Do I Update My Team?

Members can update their teams at eny time prior to the three day (72 hours prior) cancellation deadline by clicking on the “Upcoming” button under “Tourna-ments.” They can then click “My Team” and make any changes they need to.

Teams however cannot be updated once the registra-tion deadline has closed. Staff begins working on the event and needs to by notified of any changes from that point moving forward.

What web browser can I use?

Firefox is the only officially supported brower for BlueGolf.

I recently attended the PGA Merchandise Show in Or-lando and was fortunate to visit with some of you who

attended. Some of you attended an Education Seminar I conducted with a fellow colleague, Ken Ferrell, PGA. The title of the seminar was, “Career Fitness for the 21st Century”. I enjoy conducting seminars and my goal when doing them is to hopefully leave enough of an im-pression that evokes some type of change in behavior, attitude or day to day activities by those in attendance.Change is kind of a threatening word to some of us. Our comfort level in how we do our jobs is typically about routine and following a preordained or predeter-mined way of doing something. The change I am going to get you to think about today is relatively simple. This change is going to revolve around the word ACCOM-PLISHMENTS! The career fitness you are hopefully establishing should and must be tied to this word.

This isn’t necessarily about trying to accomplish some-thing new and exciting every day. Rather, this is about keeping track or remembering by documenting these accomplishments. Each one of us is sometimes our own worst enemy. We are taught to be humble, to not “brag”, and to let our successes speak for themselves. You all accomplish so much on a daily basis! But you know what? Does the board, your boss, the person in charge always notice?

We have developed a tool for your use to help you with these accomplishments and a way to track them. I want you to go to pgalinks.com, sign in, highlight the Employment page, go to the middle of the page where there is a heading “PGA Employment Depart-ment”. Scroll down and highlight “Em-ployer Communica-tion Planning”. Within this document, very close to the top, you will see some blue letters which say “Click Here”. I am asking you, not imploring you, to highlight this and start the process of change with the “Executive Summary Report”. This is a 30 day recap or a weekly recap and can be changed or revised in whatever way you desire to fit your needs.

ARE YOU READY TO CHANGE??

Bruce Lubach, PGA, is the PGA of America Employ-ment Consultant for the Colorado, Iowa, Midwest, Minnesota and Nebraska Sections. He can be reached at: [email protected] or (402) 261-3604.

Career Fitness for the 21st Century

The PGA Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship Pro-gram was established in 1986 to provide college

scholarships for graduating high school seniors and college students who are the children or grandchildren of a PGA member. Since its inception, this program has awarded some $5.7 million to 2,808 students.

The amount and number of scholarships is determined by the availability of funds, and may vary from year to year based on these factors and IRS guidelines. Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the PGA Scholarship Committee. The scholarship is for accredit-ed universities or colleges in the United States only.

By applying for the PGA of America scholarship, grad-uating high school seniors and college students who are the children or grandchildren of a PGA member are also applying for the local Colorado PGA Scholarships.

The scholarship program is an academic based schol-arship program that takes into account the following depending on the class level of the student:

The application process is available online between Nov. 17, 2014 and March 16, 2015, and students are asked to wait until they are in possession of their most current grade report (first semester) or transcript

Watch Your Language Around New GolfersHave you ever wondered how “we” in the industry

or “we” in the game of golf sound to the outside world? I’ve often wondered that, so I posed the follow-ing question in a place where you’re guaranteed to get un-filtered opinions; Facebook.

“What are some common phrases that golf profession-als or golfers use that can turn newcomers off to the game?”

The responses were immediate, amusing, and often insightful. Listen closely, and you may see why we find it so hard to attract and retain golfers these days.

Kate Tempesta (KT Urban Golf Academy) & Cameron Morton, PGA came up with similar answers: “Any-thing that starts with ‘You can’t’ ‘You don’t’ or ‘You shouldn’t’”. Well that sounds inviting. Don’t tell me what I can’t do before I’ve even decided if I want to play!

BethAnn Iapicco shared her favorite: “It’s that one good shot in each round that keeps you coming back”. Sounds hopeful and positive, right? Unless you’re a new golfer, then it sounds like: “For $50+ you can hit 120 bad shots and 1 good one….want to keep dumping money down that hole?”

Keith Humerickhouse, a Colorado native and former professional commented; “You can’t have that many tattoos and be a golfer.” Exactly the kind of warm and welcoming environment we want to create. Have you taken a look at the millennial generation lately? They love their ink. For the record, I’ve got two tattoos, and

I’m pretty sure I’m a golfer, and Humerick-house can flat out play.

Brendon Elliot, PGA loves when golfers romantically say: “Golf is the most difficult game there is and that’s what makes it so great”. Maybe that’s something you can say to a seasoned golfer, but to a new golfer it sounds like a brutal thing to get involved with and you may soon find them at the bowling alley having a beer and a laugh.

PGA Professional Eric Jensen’s favorite is “If you’re not ready for the course, you better stick to the driving range.” But of course the 30 handicap in the men’s club is “ready for the course” just because he’s been doing it longer, right?

So take a moment and think how you talk about the game to those new golfers. Is it welcoming? Is it invit-ing? Does it sound the same to the new audience as it does to you? Watch your language around new golfers; it could make all the difference.

(continued from previous page)

before applying. The applicant must enter the student’s Social Security number and the PGA-affiliated parent or grandparent’s PGA ID number to access the applica-tion.

After submitting the online application, the applicant must send a sealed, official school grade transcript postmarked by March 16, 2015, that shows their GPA information and submit the ACT/SAT test score report (if a high school applicant) to:

Ask the Experts...With the new wrap-around PGA Tour season already in full swing, who do you think will have a great year on Tour?

“Dustin Johnson, after taking time away from the game for personal reasons he should

be well rested, in great shape physically and have played some golf getting ready for the 2015 season. With that being said I

look for him to start to work his way up the leader-boards after the arrival of his first child. Who

else can take that much time away from the game and make

it 9 consecutive years with a win and the best year of his career.”

“I am looking for Jason Day to have a breakout season this year. Everyone has seen his success the past couple of years, especially competing in majors with high finishes, but I am looking for him to break through with a victory at The Masters this year. As well, I bet he has at least 3 other victories on tour and gets into the top 5 in

the World Golf Rankings. I know Americans might not like to hear that in a President’s Cup year but here comes the Aussie!”

“I am going with Billy Horschel. He host’s the RVR logo on his

bag and is a great ambassador for us. #1. His attitude is right

to win a major this year. #2 He want to defend the FedEx Cup. (a lofty goal). How can I root for anyone else that Billy Horschel?”

“Without a doubt, Bubba Watson will have the best year on Tour. Why? Here is a partial list of reasons: He is the defending Master’s Champi-

on. He just adopted a baby girl. He has a charity foundation that helps people in need, BW Foundation. He owns part of a baseball team, the

Pensacola Blue Wahoos. He drives the “General Lee” from the Dukes of Hazard. His band Golf Boys will probably go double platinum this year. And he now has a sandwich named after him, the Bubba Dub Grilled

Cheese.”

“Rory is number one in the world for a reason. Watch out for him this year, especially his new girlfriend, Ryder Cup savior and PGA of Ameri-

ca employee, Erica Stoll?”

“I think Martin Laird will have a big year because he is married to Megan Franks, the daughter of Colorado PGA Professional Hank Franks. I think Jordan Spieth might also have a big year. He seems to be settling into to the life in tour.”
