Tips on Hiking with Dogs

Follow the rules of the trail! Do not take your dog on a trail where dogs are forbidden or take him off-leash when the rules call for on-leash dogs only.

Carry enough clean water for you and your dog. Drinking out of mountain streams can give your dog (and you) some nasty parasites. Purchase a soft, collapsible dog bowl that is light weight and convenient for hikes.

Make sure your dog is fit enough for the length of hike, and the type of trail you are planning to tackle, and always take a good trail map.

Always clean up after your dog. Bring plenty of potty bags in case of more than one clean up event.

Make sure you bring basic first aid materials for humans and canines alike. Also bring a cell phone in case of an injury that leaves you or your dog immobile. It is always best to hike in groups.

Move to the right of the trail when passing another hiker, and restrain your dog. Not everyone wants to meet and greet your four-legged buddy!

Teach your dog to pay attention to you when passing other hikers or animals. Bring a toy or treats to gain your dog’s attention while passing another dog or person.

Use the right equipment. If you know your dog pulls while walking, switch to a harness or “Gentle Leader”. Pulling is no fun for dog or owner!

We pamper them. We bring them wherever we go. We surprise them with something new on special occasions. They even get holiday presents. They are our pets! From high-end items to high-tech items, products for our companion animals now

extend beyond traditional necessities. Reducing Your Pets Carbon PAW print Around the world people are making conscious efforts to help our planet Earth, and the pet industry is no exception. From natural litters to toys, accessories and organic food options, earth-friendly pet products are sprouting up everywhere.

Going to the Dogs More and more companies traditionally known for human products are going to the dogs, and cats, and reptiles. Big name companies including like Paul Mitchell, Omaha Steaks, Origins, Harley Davidson and Old Navy are now offering lines of pet products ranging from dog shampoo, pet attire, and name-brand toys to gourmet treats and food.

Pets Welcome Many hotels across the country are adopting pet friendly policies. Several chains have announced new pet-friendly policies that include everything from oversized pet pillows, plush doggie robes, to check-in gift packages that include a pet toy, dog treat, ID tag, bone and turn down treat. Some even have a licensed dog masseuse on staff.

Pet Products Sold Here Shopping for pet products is becoming easier than ever with an increasing variety of retail outlets now selling pet products. Right along side fertilizer and shovels, shoppers can now find pet products such as doggie doors and yellow lawn spot removers sold at many lawn and garden stores, nurseries, and major home improvement stores including Home Depot.

Ultra-Clean Pet-owners take grooming one step beyond a haircut, a quick bath and a nail trim. Mouthwash and an electric toothbrush for canines are routine steps in a beauty session for some pooches. Birds receive daily pedicures with special cage perches, while others enjoy manicures complete with nail polish. Pet-owning homes stay cleaner with automatic, self-flushing litter boxes, cleaning cloths for muddy paws that mimic traditional baby wipes, and scented gel air fresheners to keep rooms free of pet odors.

Acupunctureand Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine

As we have become more open to other cultures over the past thirty to forty years, there has been a growing interest in alternatives to traditional western medicine. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) includes acupuncture, herbal

medicine, acupressure, and food therapy. TCVM has been practiced on animals and humans for thousands of years in China, building protocols based on knowledge that was passed down over generations. Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses on the state of the life force or vital energy, Qi. Qi has two opposite forms: Yin and Yang which are in balance in a healthy pet. When the balance is lost, Qi flow is interrupted and disease may occur. TCVM seeks to restore the balance, enabling the normal flow of Qi to return, enabling the body to heal itself.Acupuncture is defined as the stimulation of a specific point on the body with a specific method, resulting in a therapeutic homeostatic effect. There are 173 acupoints in animals. Most of these acupoints are located in areas where they will stimulate nerves, the immune system, blood vessels, and/or lymph vessels. Studies show that stimulation of acupoints induce release of beta-endorphin, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters which can relieve pain, regulate stomach and intestinal movement, decrease inflammation, help the immune system, help regulate hormones, etc. There are several methods to stimulate acupoints, including dry needles, moxibustion (heating of the point), aqua-acupuncture, electro-stimulation, and therapeutic laser stimulation. A single or multiple methods may be used on the same pet, but the goal is the same: to restore the flow of Qi and allow the balance to return. Many people worry that acupuncture will hurt, but most (over 95%) of our animal patients are quite comfortable with acupuncture therapy and some will actually fall asleep during the treatment with the needles in.Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine should only be practiced on an animal by a licensed veterinarian. One list of qualified acupuncturists can be found at www.tcvm.com. Prior to using acupuncture and TCVM, a thorough examination should be performed on the patient and additional testing, such as x-rays and/or bloodwork may be recommended to get more information on your pet’s condition. Acupuncture can provide relief for some short-term conditions with 1 to 3 treatments, but for chronic problems a series of 3 to 10 treatments along with routine follow-up treatments may be needed. For herbal medications, follow-up exams and testing are recommended to help ensure that therapeutic goals are being achieved.

Why is my DogBiting, Chewing, Licking and Scratching?

One of the most common reasons that a pet is

taken to the veterinarian is skin disease. So what causes itching? There are a variety of diseases that can cause a pet to be itchy, but the big 3 include allergy to environmental pollens/dusts, allergy to an ingredient in the diet, and infection by a parasite such as Sarcoptes. Well that breakdown seems pretty simple right? Unfortunately, all of these diseases can lead to secondary skin and ear infections, which adds insult to injury in these poor pets. The tricky part is that the infection, and the primary cause of itch need to be addressed concurrently to see improvement and resolution of the symptoms.

We would like to focus on one of these causes of itch in particular because it is PREVENTABLE. We don’t have many fleas and ticks here in Colorado Springs, but Sarcoptic mange is extremely prevalent. Sarcoptes are microscopic parasites that are carried by fox, and coyote populations. Have you noticed the news stories on the common sightings of coyotes or fox in our area? Well your dog is at risk! “But my dog doesn’t have direct contact with these animals”. The mite can infest your dog without direct contact. Sarcoptes mites are extremely contagious and when a mite falls off the skin of a carrier animal it can survive in the environment long enough to infest a new host animal. Diagnosing the disease can be difficult and skin scrapings are often unrewarding. We recommend discussing the best parasite prevention program with your veterinarian based on your pets lifestyle and travel. Visit our website at animalallergycolorado.com for more detailed information on these mites and even a picture of the little buggers!

Most Popular Dog BreedsThe American Kennel Club recently announced their annual list of the most popular dog breeds in America. The AKC’s 2012 most popular dog breeds list is very similar to the 2011 and 2010 most popular breeds list, but with a few changes.

The Beagle and Golden Retriever have both gained ground on the Yorkshire Terrier, knocking the terrier to the 5th spot and the Poodle and Dachshund switched spots. But with all of the shake ups, once again, the Labrador Retriever tops the list for the 21st consecutive year!Bigger breeds are making their move,” said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “The popularity of the pint-sized, portable pooch just gave way to a litter of larger breeds in the Top 10. These predictable, durable, steady breeds, like Labs and Goldens, are great with kids and offer the whole family more dog to love.”

8 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Pet Aftercare Service

If I choose cremation for my pet, can you guarantee that my pet will be cremated? If I choose and pay for a private cremation, will my pet be cremated by itself in the crematory, and will I receive a written guarantee that states such?

What types of cremations does the business perform?

These three types of cremation are recognized methods for pets at the present time. You may also wish to ask where ashes from the communal cremations are scattered? Does the business define a Private (Individual, Solo, or Single-body) cremation as only one pet cremated in the previously swept, empty cremation chamber? How does the business perform a Partitioned cremation? Do they use a physical divider between the pets and/or do they use additional space between the pets?

How long does the crematory business typically take to return cremated remains to the pet owner? How long is a pet’s body held before cremation? Can my pet’s cremated remains be returned to me within 72 hours or sooner without incurring additional cost?

Does the crematory business keep detailed records to ensure accurate identification of each pet and that proper procedures are being performed? Does the facility keep a cremation log listing each pet individually, with a cremation ID number for each Private and Partitioned cremation? Are the communal cremations tracked on a log? Does the crematorium utilize numbered ID disks to track the pet through the entire process? Will I receive a certificate when my pet is returned to me with the ID number shown on it?

May I inspect the facilities where my pet’s aftercare will be performed? May I be present before, during, and after my pet’s private cremation?

Private (one pet in the crematory at a time)Partitioned (separated by physical barriers and space for remains retrieval)Communal (multiple pets cremated together, remains are not returned to owner)

Does the crematory business have a transparent or open-door policy? Are unannounced visits allowed by veterinarians, veterinary hospital staff members, pet owners, and/or the general public. Are pet owners provided a comfortable area to witness the private cremation of their pet?

Does the crematory business have adequate equipment to perform the number of cremations they say they are doing? What is the capacity of the crematories, and how many pets can be accommodated in a given time period?

How long have they been in business? What is the owner’s background, and does the staff have adequate training and experience to properly conduct pet cremations in an accurate and ethical manner?

Look for professionals with solid backgrounds in dog behavior, care and training.Be sure they require an interview and an assessment of your dog before acceptance into their program.View the facility when dogs are playing there and interview the manager and staff.Dogs that are there should appear happy and playful in a calm and well-supervised environment by a caring staff.Ask about staff to dog ratio; the fewer the staff to dog ratio, the more likely your dog will be safe and well-cared forBe sure the daycare facility includes rest time so as not to overstimulate your pet.Ask about their requirements from vaccinations to insurance.Ask if they select appropriate play groups depending on the dog’s temperament, size and age. There should be multiple playrooms and secure, outdoor areas.Find out how they deal with inappropriate behavior between dogs.Be sure they are affiliated with a veterinarian’s office in case of an emergency and ask if they will accept your preference for veterinarian care.

If you feel your dog is a good candidate for doggie daycare, there are several things to consider when looking for the right facility for your dog:

Special thanks to Tailsuntold.com Visit www.blog.tailsuntold.com for additional blogs

related to your pet.

The benefits of daycare for an energetic and social dog are many. It provides needed recreation for the dog that might otherwise be left home alone while the owner is at work. With the right placement, you will be happy knowing your dog is with professionals who can give him the exercise and attention he desires.

Pet Dental Care

continued next page

Dragon Breath, Green Fuzzy Teeth, Touchy Teeth, and Billy Bob Mouth. All of us have seen pets with problem mouths, but most people don’t Dragon Breath, Green Fuzzy Teeth, Touchy Teeth, and Billy Bob Mouth. All of us have seen pets with prob-

lem mouths, but most people don’t know that by the age of 3 years a full 85% of pets will have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition in adult dogs and cats and is completely preventable.Signs of Dental Disease in Dogs and Cats

Often these signs will develop gradually and are difficult to notice. I see animals on a regular basis whose owners describe as “acting grumpy” or “getting old,” but when we fix their dental disease they start acting “like puppies again!” Dental disease has been linked to many long term problems. Often they are directly related to the amount of tartar and the length of time it is present, but some significant problems can occur early in the course of dental disease.Problems related to Dental DiseaseThese problems can be difficult and expensive to treat, but if addressed

Bad breathTeeth that are discolored or covered in tartarLoose teeth A sensitive or painful mouth Drooling or dropping food from the mouthBleeding from the mouthLoss of appetite or loss of weight (this combination can result from diseases of many organs, and early veterinary exam is important).

Red, swollen, painful gums Infection at the gumline or at the roots of the teeth Gum loss or bone loss around the teethTooth loss or broken teethHole (Fistula) formation from the oral to the nasal cavityDamage to other organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys

early they can often be completely avoided. Prevention of these problems in pets (and in people!) consists of frequent removal of the dental plaque and tartar that forms on teeth. This begins with a good oral exam and professional dental cleaning by your veterinarian.

Pet Dental Care continued

A professional dental cleaning should include the following:Pre-anesthetic exam - This examination allows your vet to minimize the risk associated with anesthesia. Today’s advanced anesthetic protocols allow us to safely anesthetize and recover many patients, even older ones.Anesthesia monitoring - Monitoring your pet’s vital signs (temperature, heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and others) helps ensure safety and allows your veterinarian to adjust the anesthesia as needed.Dental radiographs - Radiographs (X-rays) of the teeth allow your veterinarian to evaluate below the gum line for any abnormalities that cannot be detected by examination alone.Scaling and polishing - This removes the tartar and smooths the sur-face of the teeth to slow down the recurrence of bacterial accumulation and tartar. Scaling under the gumline is one of the most important steps in a good dental.Fluoride treatment - Fluoride helps strengthen the enamel and decrease future plaque formationMost dogs and cats will need regular dentals (just like people) as tartar recurs. By addressing dental care at home you can decrease the progression of the disease and often the frequency of subsequent dental cleanings. Home care should include:Brushing teeth - Just like people, this is the best way to slow the progression of tartarOral rinses - Effective at decreasing the bacterial count in the mouthProven dental diets - Be careful, many “dental” diets are not proven to decrease tartarDental chews - Additives in these chews decrease bacteria and reduce plaque on the teethWater additives - Decrease bacteria in the mouth

Always discuss home care with your veterinarian. Some methods may be more effective or feasible for your pet, but the more consistent you are, the better the long term outcome will be. With a little routine care you can extend the length and quality of your pet’s life!

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more

quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail

when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the

hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able

to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me

gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew,

my fate was ever safest in your hands.

How to Evaluate Your Dog’s Weight

44 2013 PETACULAR PET DIRECTORY www.PETacularUSA.com

To determine whether your dog is the correct weight, compare her body condition with the images here of how dogs typically look when they are overweight, underweight, and just right.

Emaciated Thin Ideal Heavy ObeseCourtesy of Nestle Purina PetCare Co

1. Look at your dog from the side. Her tummy needs to tuck up from her chest and not be level with or hang below her chest. If you can easily see a dog’s ribs, she’s probably underweight. But in some breeds, including Greyhounds, Whippets, and Italian Greyhounds, the dog’s ribs show at a normal weight. 2. Look at your dog from above. As you stand over her and look down, your dog needs to have a visibly tucked-in waist, but her hipbones shouldn’t protrude too severely. If your dog looks like a barrel, a sausage, or a small beach ball with legs, she’s probably overweight. If her hips protrude sharply, she’s probably underweight. If she has a nice curve inward at the waist, she’s probably at a good weight.3. Feel your dog’s sides for the ribs. This test is especially important for heavily coated dogs, whose fur often conceals weight issues. If you can feel no evidence that your dog possesses a rib cage, she’s probably overweight. If you can feel the ribs but they have a slight padding, like a light blanket over them, then your dog may be just right. If the ribs are obvious and feel like they’re covered with only the thinnest layer of skin, your dog may be underweight.Obesity can cause many serious health problems in pets of any age. Too much weight stresses bones and joints, strains the heart and other internal organs, crowds the lungs, and turns a simple walk around the block into a major chore. In fact, overweight dogs suffer much the same risks and consequences as overweight humans.Malnourished dogs don’t have it any better. Lacking crucial nutrients can lead to serious nutritional issues, too. Signs of malnourishment include a bloated abdomen, bleeding gums, and an emaciated body with ribs clearly visible.

Bacon Flavored Dog Biscuits

Homemade dog treats are fun to make and healthier than many of the store-bought versions Courtesy: Santa Clara County Humane SocietyYield: 40 Treats

Ingredients5 cups Whole wheat flour 1 cup Milk 2 Eggs 10 tablespoon Vegetable oil or bacon fat 1 pinch Onion or garlic powder 1 teaspoon Salt 1/2 cup Cold water 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil to grease pan

InstructionsMix all ingredients well. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll them into two-inch balls. Bake biscuits at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Let them cool, then store in an airtight container.

Storing Dog Treats - In general you should store dog treats the same way you would homemade people cookies. That being said, there are two main variables that determine storage time - the amount and type of fat in the recipe and your local weather conditions. If your recipe uses fats such as butter, or meat bits or juices then it will be more prone to rancidity than a recipe that uses some vegetable oil or shortening. Your treats may mold or spoil much faster in humid or very hot climates.

Refrigeration and Freezing - Refrigeration will prolong the life of more fragile dog treats. Make sure to store in a tightly sealed container or zip lock bag. You can also freeze most treats in zip lock freezer bags. Allow to thaw completely before use.use a smaller cutter if you have a smaller dog.

Therapy Dogs - A Simple LoveThe depth of the supporting role of the quiet, humble therapy dog is sometimes hard to see. It’s the fuzzy little head that breaks down all barriers, walls and constructs that we build to keep everyone else out. It’s the limpid, soulful eyes that

anyone can talk to. It is so much more than the dog just wandering around to say ‘hi’. When you are on the other end of that leash, you see things that humble you, surprise you, make you smile, and give you the realization that your dog has just entered the heart of the person you are visiting. It is in the midst of pain, despair, or last breath of life that the therapy dog is present. In a time so devastating that we hardly notice the furry friend that has come in to visit, it is then when I hear the testimony of people say that was the light in their darkest time. Unconditional love came walking through the door. Someone that didn’t care you were so sick from despair, stress, grief or loss that you could hardly speak; someone who simply thought the world of you just because you were you. They simply love, requiring nothing in return. The therapy dog touches the emotional core of who we are. Imagine after sharing your heart wrenching story, asking for prayer, and beginning to cry, the therapy dog comes up and nudges you to let you know they are there. You tumble to the ground sobbing, hugging your new fuzzy friend. The depth of such love sometimes can only be understood by those who share their dogs and those who are on the receiving end of such affection. You hear nurses and caregivers say, ‘they haven’t talked in years’, ‘they haven’t moved that arm in a long time’, ‘you are the highlight for the residents in the nursing home’; or from parents ‘for the first time Timmy talked about his problems’ and ‘my daughter still remembers when you came to her school’. They visit hospitals, nursing homes, hospice, schools, disaster support centers, churches, counseling centers, and so many more.

How Much Should We Feed Our Pets?

This is a simple question, but not such a simple answer. A simple dictum is feed them all they need but less than they want. They have many nutrient needs, including energy – calories, proteins – amino acids, fiber – non digested carbohydrates,

vitamins – micro nutrients used as metabolic activators for all body function, and minerals – enzyme and co-enzyme constituents, needed to digest and metabolize the food nutrients. Next, the body weight or size is a major factor in determining food intake requirements. Age, gender (male, female, neuter), activity and life stage (breeding, lactating, and growth) are all factors considered in determining the amount to feed. The nutritionist determines the amount of calories in a given food and recommends the feeding amounts according to the metabolic formula; Food intake in kilocalories = BWt¾ x (120 to 150) where BWt = body weight in kilograms to the ¾ power. The 25% variation between 120 - 150 represents part of the amount of variance that exists between breed and individual animals. This is why determining exactly how much to feed your dog is so difficult to calculate when looking at the feeding recommendations on the package. To do this calculation, the kilocalories of metabolizable energy (ME) in a given food must be known. Unless this is expressed on the package, it is not easily determined. Most dog foods will vary between 2500 kcal per kilogram (kg) for a lite food to 4200 kcal for a high protein, high fat food. The feeding tables are based on all of these factors and are expressed usually in cups per day as a factor of age, activity, and in some cases breed. In addition the higher the caloric density the more dense is the food. In other words a cup of a lite food weighs less than a cup of high density performance food. How often should I feed my Pet? Some dogs, if fed once a day will act hungry, which may cause the owner to feed more food so the dog will not act hungry. Treats, snacks and supplements are major factors in determining the amount of food required per day. Most of these items are high in fat and carbohydrates and low in protein and fiber. They add calories and may offer few essential nutrients, but they will affect how much you feed as well as how your pet looks and acts.

How Much Should We Feed Our Pets? continued

Now we get down to the individual dog being fed a specific food. One food may recommend feeding for an 18 lb., small to medium breed dog from 1 to 1¼ cups per day. However, if this dog is less than 5 years old, is allowed to be outside most of the day and is very active, then this may not be enough. Taking another case where this same dog is confined in an apartment all day and is allowed outside only once or twice daily and then only on a lead and only walking. In this case it may only require ¾ of a cup a day. Use the feeding directions on the package only as a starting point and then adjust according to the entire variable field, for what you require for your individual pet.

Healthy Pet Foods Will Continue to ExpandHolistic, natural pet food will continue to grow in popularity, as pet parents become more and more conscientious of and educated about their pets’ nutritional requirements, and more leery about pet foods, particularly in the wake of numerous pet food recalls of recent years.

Pet Business Trends for 2013

Pet Services Will Grow in 2013The demand for pet services, especially pet grooming, will continue to increase. This will coincide with a growing market for natural, holistic pet grooming products.

Pet Business Marketing Will Get Even More High-TechSocial media will have an even stronger impact on the industry in 2013, with more pet parents looking to these platforms for information about pet products and services. Lost... and Found at HSPPR!

You might already know Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region for its animal welfare initiatives, adorable adoptable animals, and great summer camp opportunities. But did you

know HSPPR is also a great resource for finding Fido or Fluffy when he gets lost, too?

Unfortunately, less than 6 percent of cats and only 50 percent of dogs that come into HSPPR as strays are returned to their owners. The staff at HSPPR is committed to helping increase that number. We do everything possible to help lost cats and dogs reunite with their loving families, and we also help pet owners get the resources they need to ensure their pet has the best possible chance of making it home!

Help your pet find his or her way home by:Ensuring your pet wears a collar and ID tags at all times. This is the easiest and most visible way to identify your animal.Having your pet microchipped. If anyone turns your pet into a veterinarian or shelter, they will be able to scan for the chip and get your pet returned to you.Keeping your microchip information current! A microchip does no good unless the contact information you’ve provided stays up to date. Update your information online when your phone number, address, or other identifiers change.

What should you do if you lose a pet?Come to HSPPR immediately to look through our kennels for your pet. You know your pet best and identifying him or her is easiest in person. Fill out a lost report at the shelter. Your information will be in our system and can be matched against incoming animals. While you’re here, check through our found reports for pets being held at other locations.Put up posters in the area where your pet was lost, and share pictures on social media sites such as Facebook and Craigslist.

For more information about our lost and found program, or to report a lost or found animal, please contact Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region at www.hsppr.org or 719.473.1741.

Single Stream Recycling

continued next page

Single stream recycling refers to a system in which all recyclables are co-mingled in a separate recycle tote. Items no longer need to be sorted by the resident into separate bins. In

single stream, both the collection and processing systems are designed to handle this mixture of recyclables, with materials being separated for reuse. Rocky Mtn. Disposal is one of the most comprehensive single stream recycle program available in Colorado Springs. The recycling facility is located locally and you can now place all recyclables in one 95 gallon tote.

Baby Beef Dog Treats

This recipe is flavored using beef (or other flavored) baby food. This is a very easy to make recipe. Frosting is optional. Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutesYield: 2 Dozen

Ingredients2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 cup powdered milk 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1 egg 6 tablespoons vegetable oil 8-10 tablespoons water 2 small jars strained baby food (beef, chicken, lamb, or liver)

InstructionsPreheat your oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together (except water) in a large bowl and stir until combined. Add the water in a tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together and is workable. It will be a little stick. Knead the dough for about 3 minutes until the dough is smooth. Place the dough on a floured board. Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut with bone-shaped cookie cutter and place biscuits on an un-greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 min.

Makes approximately 2 dozen doggie biscuits. Please note that 3" dog treats are pretty large. You may want to

use a smaller cutter if you have a smaller dog.

Helpful Tips for Washing Your Dog

Start early. Get your puppy use to bathing; this will make it easier as your dog ages

Before getting your pet wet, brush completely to get remove excess hair, dead skin, and objects that may be embedded in the hair. Matted hair tends to tighten once wet.Choose the best shampoo based on your pet’s needs. If your dog has sensitive skin, then an oatmeal-based shampoo is a good idea. Avoid shampoos that are heavy with artificial scents and perfumes. A gentle shampoo with a tearless formula is best. Baby shampoos works quite well. Avoid adult hair products as they can dry out your dog’s skin.Rinse well. Shampoo residue can be very irritating to your pet’s skin. Any soapy residue left in your dog’s coat will cause itching and dryness.Ask your veterinarian about adding a fatty acid supplement to your pet’s diet like a daily salmon oil supplement. This can help maintain healthy a coat and avoid itchy skin.Reward your pet with a tasty treat.

Top 9 Reasons to Spay and Neuter Your Pet*

1. Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life. It prevents uterine infections and breast cancer, which can be fatal.

2. Neutering provides health benefits for your male. It prevents testicular cancer if done before six months of age.3. Your spayed female won’t go into heat. Female felines usually go into heat four to five days every three weeks during breeding season. They will yowl and urinate more frequently.4. Your male dog won’t want to roam away from home. An intact male will do just about anything to find a mate! Once free to roam, he risks injury in traffic and fights with other males.5. Your neutered male will be much better behaved. Neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human families and do not try to mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine.6. Spaying or neutering will not make your pet fat. Don’t believe this myth. Lack of exercise and overfeeding will cause your pet to be hefty.7. It is highly cost effective. The cost of this procedure is less than having and caring for a litter. It also is less than the cost of treatment if your pet gets into a fight.8. Spaying and neutering your pet is good for the community. Stray animals can cause problems by preying on wildlife, causing car accidents, damaging the local fauna, and frightening children.9. Your pet doesn’t need to have a litter for your children to learn about the miracle of birth. Use videos and books to teach your children about birth in a more responsible way.

Cats & Vets

For more information:Sara Ferguson

[email protected]

Are you one of those people who hate taking their cat to the veterinarian? You are not alone. Research says that 38% of people with cats get stressed just thinking about a vet visit. Most people say their cats hate going to the vet even more

than they fear taking them. You can do some things to make it easier on your cats to get the health care they need.

Make the Carrier Fun Leave the carrier out and regularly feed their favorite treats in it, making it a pleasant place to hang out. Keep the same bedding in the carrier so their scent travels with them.

Cover the Carrier Drape a towel over the carrier when you travel. Cats calm in quiet, dark places, so eliminating the sights and sounds of travel should decrease their stress.

Practice Car Rides Once they are used to the carrier, do some practice runs. Start by just taking them to the door, then back. Then take them out to the car, then back. Gradually work up to spending time in the car just sitting, then with the motor on, then driving around the block. Don’t forget the treats!

Play Doctor You can get your cats more used to an exam while you’re relaxed and petting them. Start by gently handling their paws. Gradually increase the time you can hold them. While you’re scratching their chins, gently start to open their mouths and touch teeth. Again, treats always help.

Calm & Soothe Along with staying calm yourself, you can make the trip less stressful by spraying a little Comfort Zone Feliway on their bedding.

The American Association of Feline Practitioners offers certification to qualified veterinarians as Cat Friendly Practices. Please visit the Cat Care pages on our website at www.happycatshaven.org for more information.
