Collision Repair program granted NATEF recertification EVIT program remains the only NATEF‐certified collision repair program in Arizona 

 

The East Valley  Institute of Technology was recently evaluated and awarded NATEF recertification in Colli‐sion Repair  and Refinishing.    EVIT  remains  the  only high school in Arizona with this honor and is amongst an elite group nationwide.  NATEF was  founded  as  an  independent,  non‐profit organization with a single mission: To evaluate tech‐nician training programs against standards developed by the automotive  industry and recommend qualify‐ing programs for NATEF accreditation.  

The  certification process  is extensive  and  involves  two major  steps: a detailed  self‐evaluation followed by an on‐site evaluation.  The purpose is to improve the quality of training  offered  by  setting  standards  for  the  content  of  instruction, which  includes tasks, tools and equipment, hours, and instructor qualifications.  Programs  are  accredited every  five  years with  a mid‐point  check  at  two  and  a half years.  This marks the sixth year EVIT’s Collision Repair/Street Rod and Custom Paint‐ing program has been certified.  Students  in the two‐year program develop the manipulative skills  involved with auto body repair and refinishing.   They learn to perform jobs ranging from detailing to as‐sisting with a complete paint job in a modern paint booth.  The hands‐on learning area was recently outfitted with two new paint mixing systems along with a computer, software, label printer, paint books, tech manuals and a mix‐ing scale.   The complete set‐up, worth more than $15,000, was provided by Leading Edge Auto Refinishes and Riverview Collision in Mesa.  “The new equipment enables students to learn a complete paint system and will bet‐ter prepare them to make a successful transition  into the workforce” said  instructor Neil Carroll.   “We are very thankful to our advisory council and community partners for helping bring this technology to EVIT.”

Adelante breaks ground on health center   

On  Jan.  31,  Adelante  Healthcare  broke  ground  on  a  new 45,000‐square  foot  health  center  located  on  the  northwest  corner of the EVIT campus. The health center will take roughly eight months to construct and is anticipated to open in Novem‐ber  2012.    The  facility will  provide  hands‐on,  real‐life  experi‐ence  for  students  along  with  the  opportunity  to  complete  clinical  hours  required  for  certification  in  programs  such  as medical assisting and practical nursing.  

 Fashion program donates to Fresh Start   

In  early‐February,  EVIT  Fashion  Merchandising  students  donated clothes and shoes collected through their resale shop to  the  Fresh  Start Women's  Foundation  located  on  the  EVIT campus. The  center offers a variety of programs and  services including  self‐esteem  enhancement,  education  services, men‐toring, career services and family law support services.  

 EVIT places 2nd at Pit Crew Challenge 

  

A  six‐member  team  from  Automotive  Technologies  placed  second  at  the  Arizona  Ford  Dealers  Pit  Crew  Challenge  on  Feb. 17 at Firebird International Raceway. Students were tested on  their  skills and  speed  in various areas of car maintenance, including  changing  tires  and  replacing  spark  plugs  and  oil  filters.   EVIT's program  is NATEF  certified and  ranks #1  in  the nation  for  job  placement  thanks  to  its  quality  instruc‐tors, students, business partnerships and advisory council.  

Collision Repair recognized by EVIT Board   

Instructor  Neil  Carroll  and  the  Collision  Repair/Street  Rod  & Custom  Painting  program  was  recognized  for  receiving  its NATEF  certification  at  the  EVIT  Board Meeting  on  Feb.  13.  It was  also  announced  that  EVIT  placed  the  highest  number  of high  school  students  in  summer  internship  in  the nation with 11 from Collision Repair and 34 from Automotive Technologies.

EVIT students get “ICEd” Aviation Air Traffic Control (ATC) students have been invited by ASU to practice and enhance their traffic management skills on the  university's  new  Intelligent  Communications  Environment (ICE) ATC simulation equipment.   Each Wednesday,  for  the  last  two  weeks,  20  students  head across campus for an hour and a half of serious simulation fun on these phenomenal artificial flight environment training aids.    

Most of the students agree that  it  is a fun but humbling experience to control traffic at Phoenix's Sky Har‐bor Airport  for  the very  first  time. This opportunity also gives EVIT  students a  first‐hand  look at what  lies ahead as they pursue their college degrees in ASU's Air Traffic Management Program.  

PMT students excel in classroom and athletics Nine Precision Manufacturing Technology  (PMT) students earned their Measurement, Materials and Safety Credential  from  the  National  Institute  of Metalworking  Skills  Organization  (NIMS).  The  credential  covers  19 industry‐specific content areas that EVIT students receive  instruction on during the first half of the year. Congratulations also goes to James Sanchez, a second‐year PMT student from Tempe High School, who won the State Wrestling Championship in his weight class and is being looked at by a number of colleges around the country for scholarships!    

Aviation student receives scholarship Congratulations  to  Catherine  "Cat"  Ruiz  for  being  awarded  a full  scholarship  to  the  Experimental  Aircraft  Association's  Air Venture this summer in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This is one of the largest air show and fly‐in events in the world.   Thanks to the Copper State Fly‐In Association for selecting Cat for this tremendous opportunity. Cat is a very active and enthu‐siastic first‐year aviation student from Hamilton High School.  

 Non‐traditional student places 3rd in regional competition Collision Repair hosted a regional competition in early‐February.  Six students competed including five males and one female.  The contest was judged by two industry professionals that also judge at the state skills com‐petition.  Kudos to Alyssa Cantrell who placed 3rd in the competition.  Instructor Neil Carroll reports one of the judges said “Alyssa is one of the best girls I've ever seen in the industry.”   

 20th Annual Mystery Chef Dinner Help  raise money  for  scholarships while  enjoying  fine‐dining prepared and served by top valley chefs and EVIT students at the Mystery Chef Dinner at 6 p.m. on March 8.   Tickets  are  $65  each  and  100%  tax‐deductible.  Seating  is  limited! Call 480‐461‐4139 for reservations.

Program Spotlight: Medical AssistingProgram Spotlight: Medical Assisting  Medical Assisting students explore optometry  Submitted by Belinda Long, Medical Assisting Instructor  Thanks to a new partnership with Southwestern Eye Center, students  in the Medical  Assisting  program  at  the  East  Valley  Institute  of  Technology  are  learning  about  ophthalmology  through  classroom  instruction  and  externships.  In  early‐2011,  Dr.  Lothaire  Bluth,  a  board‐certified  ophthalmologist  and  founder of Southwestern Eye Center, approached EVIT after recognizing the need for trained medical technicians in his offices across the East Valley.  

The  partnership  began with  a  class  of  students  visiting  a  Southwestern  Eye  Center, where  they  perform  comprehensive eye care and procedures such as cataract surgery.   Of the students who expressed  interest after the tour, ten were selected to participate in externships based on attendance, grades and attitude.  To prepare,  students  learned  anatomy  and physiology of  the eye, medical  terminology  and  abbreviations specific  to  the  eye  industry  and  a  series  of  “chair  skills”  that  test  for  eye  turns,  peripheral  vision,  visual  acuities, normal pupils and more.  This  semester, nine  students have been placed  in externships at Scottsdale Eye Physicians, Arizona Family Vision Center and Southwestern Eye Center clinics, where  they will spend half‐day,  four days a week until May.  Upon completion of 1,000 hours, the students will be eligible for their ophthalmology certification.  “Feedback from the optometrists or ophthalmologists at the various offices has been very positive.  Students are showing remarkable maturity and even working independently with patients” said Belinda Long, medical assisting instructor.  “It is my hope the program will expand in the future with additional clinical sites, so we can continue to meet the demand for trained technicians.”   This  spring,  EVIT  anticipates  receiving  a  donation  of  gently  used  equipment  from  Southwestern  Eye  Center including an exam chair, a phoropter that measures an individual's refractive error and determines his or her eyeglass prescription, and a slit lamp used to examine the different parts of the eye.

Training tomorrow’s leaders  Submitted by Tony Garcia, Law Enforcement Instructor  EVIT Law Enforcement students participated in a number of hands‐on learning opportunities in the past few months.  Below are some of the highlights and upcoming events:  Dec. 9: Senior Cadets went to the Maricopa County Sheriff   Office for  a  full  day  of    Detention  Officer  training.    This  included  taser  training,  pepper  ball  launching weapon  system,  K9  training, defensive tactics, and use of force training scenarios.  Feb. 11:  EVIT Cadets   participated  in  the Mesa Police Department Explorer Team Building Challenge.  This event is held yearly by MPD and  consists  of  various  team  building  events  in  which  the  cadets are placed with other Explorer Posts and given assignments to complete.  Feb. 14: EVIT Cadets raised more than $517.00 for the Mesa Police Department and the Police Unity Tour.   This money will go to help officers who have died in the line of duty.  Cadets recently participated  in the Shoulder Tapping project.   This project puts  the Cadets  in  a  “undercover”  role  in which  they  ap‐proach  individuals  to ask  if  they will buy  them alcohol.   They are watched over by various police agencies.  Feb. 24: Senior Cadets were given a “First Responder: Actions of the Initial Responding Officer” course by Everest College covering topics such as officer safety, damage control, and processing evidence.  March  21:  Senior  Cadets  will  be  going  to  the  National  Guard  Firearm Training Center located in Florence, Arizona.  Students will participate  in  a  virtual  firearm  training  facility  and  paintball “battleground” scenario.  April 10:   Senior Cadets will host a day for various counselors and ROTC  instructors to  learn about EVIT Law Enforcement.   Visitor ac‐tivities will include climbing the U.S. Army rock wall.

EVIT Law Enforcement helps prepare students for a career in a criminal justice/law enforcement‐related field.  They study crime and surrounding responses, examine the causes of crime, criminal law, constitutional law, and constitu‐tional safeguards and gain a strong foundation in the organization and operation of the criminal justice system includ‐ing the police, courts, jails, prisons, probation and parole departments, and community corrections agencies.

EVIT offers a variety of summer learning opportunities in specific program areas such as Aviation, Automotive Technologies and Radio Broadcasting/Audio Production and Media Marketing (BAMM).

On Feb. 14, EVIT Law Enforcement presented more than $500 to Mesa Police Chief Frank Milstead to support the Police Unity Ride. Chief Milstead also spent time speaking with students and answering their questions.

EVIT partnered with Mesa Sister Cities to host exchange students Bryan and Jonathan from Guaymas, Mexico  for two weeks in February. They spent time learning in EMT, Firefighting, Biotechnology and Culinary.  

 

Walk‐a‐thon to benefit Juvenile Diabetes on March 5 & 6 

  

HOSA  is ramping up with  its annual service project which is a walk‐a‐thon for Juvenile Diabetes.  It will be at the main campus on March 5 and at the east campus on March 6 during both AM and PM sessions.   Last year, EVIT students raised the most money  in the nation—more than $12,500—at the walk‐a‐thon.

The "Condo Cuties" of the Red Hat Club from Apache Junction spent the afternoon at EVIT getting pampered  by Cosmetology students.  Don’t forget to book your appointment by calling 480‐461‐4033! 

The Advanced Fire Science class participated in live fire training making attacks on the propane tank prop and car prop. These drills are designed to get students ready for working as reserve and full‐time firefighters in local communities.

available to help you create documents, write any letters or do any proofing that may be necessary.   Automated Phone Messages. If you would to send a personal phone message to interested students we 

can use our School Messenger system to send out a pre‐recorded message.  Please contact Katie Askins at 480‐461‐4029 to schedule a time to record it.  It will sound more personal coming from you!  

Electronic Mail. There are many ways you can utilize electronic mail.  If you are interested in sending out a mass email to interested students we can help you do that!  We can also send information and invita‐tions for upcoming events and messages to current EVIT parents.  Best of all, it's free!  

  Along with  helping  you  follow  up with  prospective  students, we  have  been  busy  giving more  than  350  presentations to students across the East Valley, attending  lunchtime events, radio remotes, parent nights, and career days.    Thanks to those teachers who provided students to each of the high schools we visited this year.  Your stu‐dents did a great  job  representing your program and speaking with all of our  interested students.      If you have any suggestions for recruiting or need assistance, please let us know!

Business & Industry PartnershipsBusiness & Industry Partnerships  New members added to EVIT Advisory Councils Submitted by Janice Parker, Partnership Development  The  East  Valley  Institute  of  Technology  maintains  partnerships  with  business  and  industry  throughout  the  East  Valley  to  ensure  that  all  training  programs  provide  students  with  job  skills  necessary  at  employment.  Students learn in a working environment while developing a broad range of skills essential for successful living.  

 To  promote  greater  co‐operation  between  edu‐cation and industry, each  program has an advisory  council made up mostly of private  sector  members  who  volunteer  their  time,  talent  and  knowledge  to  support  and  strengthen  career  and  technical  education.    EVIT  also  maintains  strong  relationships  with  business  &  industry  partners  such  as  local  car  dealerships,  restaurants,  hospitals, salons, higher education and trade organizations.

Trip Reduction Program  

In  a  partnership  with  Valley  Metro,  the  EVIT  Trip  Reduction  Program  is  designed  to  reduce  single  occupant vehicle (SOV) trips to the work site.
