SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

October 14, 2012

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Prelude

Silent Prayer

Gracious God, revealed to us as we welcome children in the name

of Jesus, grant the childlike openness and honesty to explore

your word. Teach us as Jesus taught the disciples that we may

not so much aspire to greatness as to faithfulness, counting

service in Christ’s name a joyous privilege. Amen.

Welcome and Announcements We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet.

Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from the narthex to your loved one.

scattered and torn edges. Leader: May your soul find communion here. People: Searching for honesty, for a truth spoken in love. Leader: May your faith be challenged here. People: Looking for a place to offer your time and talents. Leader: May your spirit enrich this community People: Searching for joy to blossom and hope to grow. *Prayer of Confession (unison)

All: Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us mend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in you ways, to the glory of your holy name. Through Christ, our Lord, Amen.

Silence is observed.

*Words of Assurance

Leader: In Christ, God offers mercy, forgiveness and healing, even when we are ungrateful.

People: By faith we are made whole, that we might rise with Christ and serve the faithful.

Leader: Let us respond as people who know God’s approval and seek to live up to it.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Children’s Sermon

Anthem “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” by Christopher Bennett

Old Testament Lesson: Job 23:1-9, 16-17 (p. 462)

Psalm 22:1-5, 9-11 (responsive)

Leader: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me,from the words of my roaning? People: O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night, but find no rest. Leader: Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. People: In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. Leader: To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame. People: Yet it was you who took me from the womb; you kept me safe on my mother’s breast. Leader: On you I was cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me you have been my God.

People: Do not be far from me,

for trouble is near and there is no one to help.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith: Apostles’ Creed (unison)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offering

“We offer the treasures of this world as a way of recalling all of us to a right re-

lationship with you. O God, the source of all wisdom and truth. Your design for

life is more to be desired than the finest gold. To learn from you and to serve

you is our highest joy. May our offering and our daily lives communicate this

message.” Amen.
