I got my first tattoo in 2008 when I was 18. It was a picture of my cat on my back. I didn’t like it. So, I added

another tattoo to hide the first one. I had a garden picture. You can just still see the cat.

Reading 2 1 Read the text and choose the correct answers.

We don’t know how a baby, born in Europe today, will live – but we can guess. Most will have two working parents, but in some countries neither parents will ever have a job. The child will start school between the ages of five and seven, but may go to nursery at two years old. They will stay at school until they are 18 and about half will go to university. Some will stay at university until their mid-twenties to get a second degree, but in some countries this will leave the student with little money but possibly a better job. However, many will leave their own country to find work.

The child will probably get married. Most people marry in their late twenties, but some will wait until their thirties. They may not divorce, but divorce is increasing and more people will live alone as they get older. In almost all countries living alone is increasingly usual.

1 Read the text and choose the correct answers.

Deserts cover about half of the land on the earth, and they are getting larger every year. As the world gets warmer and there is less water available, there are fewer places for people to live, grow crops and keep animals.

Scientists believe that by 2020 up to 60 million people might move from the Sahara Desert in Africa northwards into North Africa and Europe. People can’t live on the land anymore as nothing grows, so they have to move to new towns and cities.

The problem isn’t just in Africa though. Since 1950, people have moved away from 24,000 villages in

north-west China because of desert expansion and it’s getting worse. In India, as the population grows, more and more villagers are moving to new areas as they have no water. At the moment it’s only villages

that are disappearing, but scientists believe that soon whole cities, such as Sana’a, the capital city of

Yemen, will need to move as it is running out of water.

Less and less water means more deserts. If deserts continue to grow, there will be millions of refugees looking for new places to live. Will the world be able to help?
