It s̓ been a strange summer for me, sleep-wise. Iʼve been working at home, and without an external

structure, my sleep cycle has evolved to a schedule usually seen only in teenagers and the severely jet-lagged. I sleep so late that I canʼt bring myself to admit the hour to anyone — it shames me just to have the dog know what time I get up!

But I try to redeem myself by working at the computer long past midnight, which is when I find myself visiting online forums populated by friendly young men. Now, please donʼt stop reading there, because it s̓ truly not what it sounds like!

Website development is what Iʼve been working on, stuff like XHTML, CSS, Javascript and CMS configuration. This is not actually programming, my son informs me, but it s̓ close enough for an old broad like me. Fortunately, when I get stuck, there is help just a click away at any hour, day or night. It turns out that there s̓ a sort of “hive mind” always buzzing at online message boards on these topics, and all the bees are young men, giving each other helpful suggestions like, “Dude, in the index.php, try adding style = ʻposition:relativeʼ to one of the divs in the hornnav module.”

Sure, there s̓ an occasional young woman, or an old guy (my age, that is) on the board. But from my observations, it appears that I am the only over-50 female on the planet engaging in this type of late-night code wrangling. And that s̓ a shame, because I think a lot of empty-nested women with insomnia would love it. Fiddling around “under the hood” of a website is as compelling as a knotty crossword puzzle or Sudoku, plus it gives you something to show for your effort. The dearth of females in this area is as mystifying to me as our under-representation among finger-style guitarists, National Geography Bee contestants, and late night talk show hosts. I think it s̓ time for a change.

So, here s̓ to new interests at any age and time of day, and without preconceived notions of gender suitability. Maybe, when I get done with my current projects, Iʼll pick up the guitar. Or maybe Iʼll create a late-night workshop, something like “Wacky Women Weaving Websites.” Because this is just way too much fun to leave to the boys.

Thanks for reading, and hang in there, folks...summer s̓ almost over! Iʼll let you know when the new Our Town website is up — I hope youʼll visit it and say, “Wow! An old broad did this?”

The new stimulus package has many incentives to homes and businesses for renewable energy and energy savings. It is broken down into two categories: Energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Energy Efficiency – These incentive will pay 30% of the installed cost, up to $1,500 combined for upgrading insulation, windows and doors, energy efficient HVAC, weather-stripping, etc. This program ends in 2010.

Renewable Energy – For this area, the only practical item on the bill is for solar. This program has no upper limit cap and is a tax credit up to 30% of installed cost. This program ends in 2016. The old program had a $2,000 solar cap. The new program has no cap on renewables.

These incentives are in addition to credits already offered by your power company, Orange County, and the State of Florida (it is anyoneʼs guess how long these programs will be offered). It will now be possible to proceed with your upgrades with little out of pocket cost. These upgrades can now be financed and the monthly payments made with your monthly energy savings. At the end of the payments, your out of pocket building energy cost can be reduced by 50% or more.

This program offers tax credit on your installed cost. Remember, a tax credit differs from a tax deduction in that a tax credit offers a dollar to dollar credit on what you owe and a tax deduction comes off earnings. Big difference.

Volunteers NeededThe Jewish Pavilion has 150 volunteers. They visit older adults who live in assisted living and nursing homes throughout Orange and Seminole counties. The organization is always looking for more volunteers to visit one-on one with people who are lonely and no longer able to care for themselves. Volunteers are also needed for holiday parties, social events, services and office work. All days of the week and all times are available. Volunteering is for everyone - young, old and in between.
