My Pre-departure Checklist
1. Student visa
-It takes a long time to process and a lot of documents. So,
be fully prepared before heading to Germany Consulate.
2. Flight tickets
-Other than Hamburg Airport (the nearest to Kiel), there are
other options in Germany if you want to travel a little
before arriving Kiel. I arrived in Munich Airport which is a
nice airport.
My Pre-departure Checklist
3. Cash
-Bring enough cash and try to get some changes.
Activate your bank card at ATM in HK before
departure, so you can get Euro directly from ATM with
UnionPay in Germany. Prepare at least one credit
card as it will be useful to buy train/bus tickets.
4. Enough coats and rain jacket
-Although it is summer time, temperature can drop to 10
degree in rainy days. Kiel rains a lot.
Just Arrived…
I arrived Kiel by bus. Get off at Kiel ZOB (usually the
final destination for many bus lines across the country.).
Then, you can easily find the train station and the bus stop
next to it. In Kiel, you have to get around by bus always
unless you have a bike.
My Place
I live the guesthouse arranged by the school called
Gästehaus Kiel (Hans-Detlev-Prien-Straße 8)
The guesthouse is just a few minutes walk from the
supermarket ( Famila) which is really convenient. But do
remember, the supermarket and most shops close on
Sunday. Famila close earlier on Sat, so be prepared for
weekends otherwise you will not have enough food.
My First Day in Lab
My supervisor showed me around my lab. It is very
spacious. I can have my own seat and bench. The view
from my window is beautiful and can see lots of seagulls.
People I Met
I spend most of my time working in lab, so I got really
close with my colleagues at the end. They are all really
nice and helpful.
Kiel
Kiel is a little harbour that with a lot of green and blue
sky all the time. I enjoyed the relaxing time there. Just sit
around the piers, café and enjoyed the views of the city.
In summer, the annual event Kieler Woche is really fun. There
are many street food and many activities. My favourite
was watching sailing in Kiel Olympics Park. I love the city
for the seagulls, beautiful ships and its natural beauty.
