    Nursing students require the desire to help people.Individuals studying to be nurses have to be practicaland know how to manage their time. They will developeective communication skills and the ability to work in ateam, but also as a leader.

    Adult nursing involves the physical and psychologicalcare o people rom early adulthood onwards, throughoutthe ageing process. Adult nursing is just as much abouthealth promotion and wellbeing o the person as it isabout sustenance and rehabilitation rom acute or longterm disease. With this in mind adult nursing places greatemphasis on the uniqueness o the individual to promoteoptimum health and best quality o lie - working in closepartnership with patients.

    The role o the adult nurse is challenging, diverse andrewarding. Responding to patients physical and socialneeds, adult nurses develop strong working partnershipswith colleagues in the multi-proessional team both withinthe National Health Service and the independent sector;working in a variety o environments rom large acutehospital settings to small rural communities.

    The programme combines academic learning withpractical experience to ensure that students gain theappropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to become aproessional nurse. The programme oers a rameworko evidence based learning to enhance and support thequalities o the student, so they become eective andcompetent practitioners in a wide range o clinical settings.

    The teaching is student ocused and the methods supportproblem-based learning aimed at developing not onlythe academic needs o the student but also the clinical,cultural and social aspects o nursing that refect todayssociety. Students can thereore expect to ully participatein lectures, seminars, group work, presentations anddebates and be taught by, amongst others, nurses, doctors,religious leaders and patients. Adult nursing students willalso be taught about and exposed to care in relation tomental health, children, and mothers and the newborn.

    This programme meets the proessionaloutcomes that are identied by theNursing and Midwiery Council (NMC)as essential pre-requisites or registrationas a nurse. The programme commenceseach September with an additional intakeevery February

    This is a three-year, ull-time careullyintegrated modular programme otheoretical and clinical study to providestructured development o proessionalskills. All modules are compulsory andty percent o the programme is deliveredin a range o clinical practice settings.

    Within this eld o nursing, you willexperience the continuum o adult care.You will be taught the skills to assess,plan, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based care to promote the health andwellbeing o adults with acute and chronicconditions.

    Teaching is based on a social modeland students will be taught to appreciatehealthcare and the well being othe patient in the wider context. Assuch students should expect to betaught subjects such as anatomy andpathology, sociology and psychology,law and ethics, interpersonal skills andcommunication; all o which will beapplied to nursing practice within anevidence based curriculum.

    Ater completing a BTEC National Diploma in Health Studies, Tamara took a year out andsecured a job as a carer in a nursing home. Ater gaining valuable experience and a greatinsight into the proession, Tamara decided to apply to study adult nursing and hasntlooked back since. She said:

    The course is intense with requent practical placements throughout each year,including assessments and exams; however the lecturers are very supportive andproessional. Although the course is demanding and requires a great amount odedication and hard work, it is extremely rewarding.

    For me the highlight o the course is the practical experience. I have been luckyto work in a variety o placements ranging rom oncology and haematology toSwansea prison, and have secured a three month placement in Finland next year.

    The course has a great deal to oer and so, when I do complete my degree, Iknow I will be condent as I have gained a vast amount o experience in a varietyo dierent clinical settings.

    Candidates need to demonstrate a strong educationalprole and a clear commitment to their chosen

    nursing branch.

    n GCSE proles need to include a minimumo 5 passes including Welsh/English Language,Mathematics and a Physical Science or DoubleAward Science at Grade A-C.

    n Candidates also require a minimum o: BBC atA2 level

    All applicants need to demonstrate success at study inthe previous three to ve years. Although no specicsubjects are required a A Level, it is benecialto study health or science related courses. Careexperience can be helpul but is not essential andall candidates will be expected to demonstrate adetailed understanding o adult nursing.

    Career ProsPeCts

    As a graduate o the programme, job prospect s arevery good with the majority o adult nurses workingwithin the NHS. Clinical specialties are unlimitedand typical areas o practice include accident andemergency, surgery and medicine, or the community.The career options are excellent or adult nurses withmany progressing into senior or innovative postssuch as ward managers, specialist nurses and nursepractitioners.

    Respiratory Physiologists work with patientssuspected or known to have disease o therespiratory system.

    The day-to-day work o a Respiratory Physiologistincludes the use o a variety o specialistequipment to obtain diagnostic data aboutrespiratory structures and their unction. TheRespiratory Physiologist will interpret the data,which will be used by the healthcare team toinorm diagnosis and direct therapy.

    Respiratory Physiologists work directly withpatients to deliver diagnostic tests o breathingand treatment or lung disease. They are alsoinvolved in exercise testing, sleep studies anddelivery o ventilation to patients on the wards andat home. The work o a Respiratory Physiologistmust be reliable and accurate as patients livesoten depend on their skills.     Initially, Becci was a little daunted about studying or the midwiery degree, however shewas pleasantly surprised to nd that the combination o theory and practical experiencereally suited her. She said:

    At 38 and with two small children aged six and seven I was really worried abouthow I would cope with the course. I have been pleased to nd that it has all beenmanageable and my position is not uncommon amongst midwiery students. Thedegree is a great combination o placement and academic study, with some homestudy days too, which suits me really well.

    It was great getting involved in clinical practice right at the beginning o thecourse, I elt engaged very quickly and it brought everything we were doing in theclassroom to lie. My mentors have been really supportive and encouraged me toully participate in everything they do.

    Although I have come to Midwiery late I eel really lucky to have ound a career Ieel passionate about and very motivated by.

    who mIGht lIke mIdwIfery?

    The midwies work is all about people. To beinterested in this proession you would need to beseeking an opportunity to work with women andtheir amilies in both the community and hospitalsettings. Any work with the public can oten bechallenging and demanding, and this is particularlyso in midwiery, as pregnancy and childbirth can bea very anxious and emotional time. Thereore subjectareas o interest include psychology, sociologyand communication skills, as well as bioscience.Midwiery is physically demanding and the workessentially practical, which should also be taken intoaccount when considering this career path.

    Candidates need to demonstrate a strong educationalprole.

    n GCSE proles need to include a minimumo 5 passes including Welsh/English Language,Mathematics, and Double Science or a SinglePhysical Science (e.g. Biology) at Grade A-C.

    Promotion prospects in midwiery arevery good, with midwives commonlyachieving Band 6 grading (Agenda orChange) ater one year o continuouspractice as a midwie in the NHS.Our Midwiery qualication is highlyvalued in other countries, and is likelyto contribute to a qualiers ability towork abroad, e.g. in Australia, Canadaand New Zealand. There may also beopportunities or short international/national placements during the thirdyear o the programme.

    There are several role dimensions

    in midwiery, including workingindependently, working in thecommunity or in hospitals and birthcentres. Midwives also oten take upspecialist roles in areas such as teenagepregnancy, substance misuse, breasteeding, sexual health, high risk care,antenatal education, antenatal screeningand homebirth.

    Midwives also undertake research,write journal papers and books,they may also work in teaching or inmanagement.

    earnInG PotentIalThe starting salary is at Band 5 and approximately20,700. Midwives progress to Band 6 ater oneyear o qualiying and on condition that they haveachieved the appropriate level o competence. ThisBand begins at 24,000 with annual increments.Further progression on the Agenda or Changepayscale depends upon job opportunities, as well asindividual ability and talent.

    PlaCements

    Experience o clinical practice is gained onplacements with midwives working throughoutSouth and West Wales in community based teams,midwiery led birth centres and hospital maternityunits. These are usually arranged as near to thestudents place o residence as possible. However inorder to experience a wide variety o placements,all students will be expected to travel within westWales at dierent stages o the programme. Thismay involve a placement away rom the studentsplace o residence when bed and breakastaccommodation will be provided. This experience isvery valuable and contributes to the students CV oruture employment.

    where wIll yoU stUdy?When not on work placements, students will betaught at Swansea Universitys main campus.
