From the Principal

One Semester down...

Well…

Six months have flown by. Six months, two terms, one semester to go… and then I say goodbye.

But enough of that! Leave the tears for later.

It’s been a big week for families and staff of the College and beyond. We have extended deepest sympathies to the family of Fletcher Hergenhan. His recent death has shocked us all. We hold our children more tightly. We hug them more and tell them we love them. We need to keep doing that. Children thrive where they are loved.

I have read each student’s report which will be sent home at the end of this week. I am so proud of your children. The majority of them have worked to the best of their ability. Many could improve and they will be setting goals for improvement with their teachers.

One area which concerns me is the absentee rate for many children. It is imperative that they come to school every day. Only real sickness should keep them away. To build a good work ethic into your child, please ensure they come to school. Don’t allow small

and insignificant discomforts to keep them away. It is interesting to note that students who are away regularly are not performing academically. It also sets a pattern for excess absenteeism as a student moves from Middle School to Senior School. Good attendance on the pathway to HSC is a critical factor of academic success. Good patterns of study and attendance are critical and these commence when children are young.

Some of our Years 9 and 10 students and staff are heading to Manila for a Mission Trip at the end of the holidays. They will be serving young people in the Payatas garbage tip area of Manila, getting to know them and seeing where they live. It will be confronting for our young Aussies, coming as they do from a comfortable home, good schooling, plenty of food and clothing and great transport options. They will also helping with the little children who are the recipients of Charlton’s regular support by the Canteen and PA. These children receive food, vitamins and a chance to play and learn in ways that are just not available to them otherwise.

Estelle (Admin), Grace (my Granddaughter, who is a student of Charlton), and I will also be heading to Manila in the holidays to help Cherie and David Snellgrove in their ministry at Safe Haven; a safe home for children off

the streets and battered women. Have a look at safehavenmanila.com for stories about this wonderful organisation which helps the poorest of the poor.

Please pray for both groups as they head out in the holidays. If you would like to financially support the teams to assist in feeding or educating these little ones just transfer money into the Charlton account and nominate that it is for Manila. All monies will bless our Filipino friends. It is not used to pay for our fares or accommodation.

Have a wonderful break from school. Enjoy your children. Have fun with them. They are a precious (if somewhat annoying at times) gift from God; a treasure of great price.

Sue

Do you love life and want to see good days? I certainly do! So, what is ‘the good life?’ People will often say it is about getting money, stuff, being happy or having fun. But is that really a good life?

This passage talks about how we speak, doing good and pursuing peace. Could that be the key to the good life? But doing good is often difficult because evil is regularly rewarded immediately, and the reward of doing good is often delayed. God promises the rewards of doing good are better and secure.

Is the good life to be found in a deodorant, a new car, a nice house? NO!! Is it to look for health, happiness and peace? NO!! The bottom line is that the good life is living in fellowship with God and doing the things approved by God.

for the week

1 Peter 3:10-12Whoever would love life and see

good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn from evil and

do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears

are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those

who do evil.

Secondary Futsal Gala DayOn Friday 17th June 2016, Charlton Christian College Senior Boys had the opportunity to represent the College at a Futsal Gala Day in Maitland.

Competing for the Senior Boys was Joshua Low, Matthew Randall, Wilson Tweed, Luke Gibbons, Dylan Stipack, Joshua Corrigan-Ellis and Michael Zammit.

The day was successful overall with all teams playing to the best of their ability. Our boys played exceptionally well and came away with a 3-0 win for their first game against Wyong Christian College and followed up with a 6-0 win against Maitland Christian College. Their third win against Green Point Christian College automatically put them into the finals. The last game before the finals was against Belmont Christian College. Again, the boys performed exceptionally well and came away with another win.

The boys were feeling confident heading into the Final undefeated. However, they got off to a rocky start going down 2-0 in the first half. Working hard, they managed to bring it back to 2-2 only to concede another goal a couple of minutes later. Still working and never putting their heads down the boys managed to bring it back to 3-3 at the final whistle.

This meant the game would be decided by golden goal. Unfortunately due to a disallowed goal, the boy’s heads went down momentarily and they conceded a stunning goal from Green point ending the game. The boys were still happy with their performance on the day as they all knew that they had played to the best of their ability. Mr Welburn was also very pleased with the level of sportsmanship demonstrated throughout.
