uarterlyOTSQ Faronics Power Save To reduce energy consumption, a product called Faronics Power Save has been installed on nearly all computers at San Antonio College. This Power Management Software determines when computers are inactive and automatically sets the unit to sleep mode (low power state). In addition, after 10PM computers are turned off to reduce energy consumption. Powersave is now installed on 2741 computers, including employee and student labs. In July 2016, the system reported 273 MWh in energy savings and over $24,000 in cost savings. If you have any questions, comments or other suggestions on what we, the San Antonio College community can do together to reduce our environmental impact, please email us at [email protected].

We’re excited to share that the Xerox Printers at San Antonio College were successfully upgraded. The project was led by District Finance & Administration in close coordination with District Information Technology Services and Campus Technology Services. The project began on August 2nd and was successfully completed on August 10th, 2016. Under this project, 71 Xerox printers were upgraded at the SAC campus. Online Training Videos are available in Alamo Talent for employees who are interested in learning more about the use of these printers. The new devices have modern print capabilities and are more reliable and equipped to meet increased printing loads on campus.
In addition to printer deployment, Office of Technology Services staff worked in conjunction with a district-wide implementation team to effectively plan ongoing support and maintenance. Similar to the prior service agreement, Xerox will proactively manage and monitor
printers and send service alerts to the Xerox Help Desk. Automatic alerts will be generated for low toner, paper jams, print volume counts and out-of-paper messages. All printers will continue to have “secure print” capability to manage printing of confidential information.
For service, supplies or assistance, users are encouraged to contact
Xerox Helpdesk at 1-855-281-6196 and follow the prompts to
reach Xerox support. Please make sure to have your
printer model, serial number and printer location handy before
calling. If the Xerox Helpdesk is unable to resolve the issue, the
Xerox helpdesk will provide you with a reference number and escalate
the issue to an onsite DocuCare Associate (DCA). Office of Technology Services will continue to work closely with District Support Operations to ensure an excellent printing experience. As SAC strives towards our eco-centric goals of campus-wide sustainability, users are encouraged to be responsible and print only what is absolutely necessary.
Featured Project in Motion Centralizing File SharesAs part of a District-wide
initiative, Office of Technology
Services is working with District
Information Technology Services
towards migrating all existing
network file shares to a more
reliable, centralized, consistent
file share repository (shared file
storage). As a user, you will be
able to securely store, collaborate
and share information. The
new storage infrastructure is
more robust and will satisfy high
demand of real-time traffic.

Malware continues to soar and threaten business and home personal computers by infecting
them with clever and sophisticated malware such as Ransom Ware. To protect against such
malicious attempts, home personal users can download a free version of Malwarebytes located
at https://www.malwarebytes.com/antimalware. This Anti-Malware software is free for home
users and is an effective solution. A frequent question from many users is why is Malwarebytes
needed if a current anti-virus software is already in place? The answer is simple; while most
computer viruses and anti-virus software haven’t changed much, the methods with which cyber
criminals are incapacitating and corrupting our systems have. Malware is not simply a virus
spread by email attachments, but a self-propagating malicious software infecting computers
because of the lack of improvement on security controls. Most traditional anti-virus solutions are
not able to detect malware such as Zero-day (unknown) types of malware exploits. Since there is
no one tool capable of catching all weaknesses, the most reliable approach is a layered system
searching for dangers from multiple angles. It is recommended that individuals use an Anti-
Malware software as an added layer of protection to complement their anti-virus software.
SAC Tech Store Grand OpeningStudents, Faculty and Staff at
Alamo Colleges can make their
technology purchases and have
questions answered right on the
SAC campus at the SAC Tech
Store, conveniently located
at the corner of N. Main Ave
and E. Park Ave. The store is
an Apple Authorized Campus
Store but will also sell other
technology products, such as
Dell, Computer Accessories,
including cases for tablets, cell
phone covers, headphones,
media storage and more. In
store services include computer
repair, trade-in, free technology
workshops and a showcase
of trending technologies. The
store is officially set to open
on August 25th, 2016 between
10:00a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
The Technical Support Services team is
actively working on implementing two
desktop replacement plans on campus.
Per District-wide procedure, desktop
computers for Staff wil l be replaced on
a five year cycle as allowed by funding
and 20% of the computers for Faculty are
replaced every fiscal year via a District
Budget. The OTS department identif ies
and targets the oldest machines first, to be
replaced as part of these plans. The new
systems, the HP EliteOne 800, wil l arrive
on campus this summer. These are all- in-
one, 23 inch computers that wil l contain
the new Windows 10 operating system as
well as Microsoft Office 2016. With the new
software, our clients wil l receive a boost
in productivity with easier collaboration
features. For technical assistance, contact
our College Help Desk at (210) 486-0777.
For training assistance, employees can vis i t
the Instructional Innovation Center at Moody
Learning Center 712.

Knowing about technology
services is important to
those new to San Antonio
College. To that end, OTS
has put together a Student
Technology Resource Guide
focused on key technology
services available at our
College. The Student
Technology Resource Guide
is available online and will
also be distributed to all
students in the form of an
email through ACES. The
guide is easy to read and
jam packed with technology
updates, services and tools
including information about
ACES, Canvas, Technical
Support, Computer Labs and
Loaner Equipment. Faculty
members are encouraged
to inform students about
the availability of this new
resource guide and the
importance of regularly
checking their ACES email
account. Faculty can also
link this resource from their
online courses and make it
available to the students:

Search Folders in Outlook Managing and maintaining emails can prove to be an overwhelming
task at times. Microsoft Outlook provides a great way to help
save time and aggravation by offering virtual folders that display
emails matching specific criteria, called search folders. To create
a new search folder, use the Control + Shift+ P shortcut key.
Select “Create Custom Search Folder,” then type a name for your
folder in the name field. Next, click criteria and select your desired
customizations and click OK. Then, click the browse button to select
which folders you would like to include in your custom search folder.
Once you are done, click OK and Outlook will add your newly created
custom folder to your folder view.? DID YOU

SAC has adopted a new computer lab tracking software called AccuTrack in replacement of the
previous lab management software - LabTrac. The new solution is feature rich and versatile.
Beginning, Summer 2016, Office of Technology Services has been working on installing AccuTrack
on all open computer labs. Utilizing this new tool, lab managers will be able to generate reports on
computer lab visits, including important information, such as application usage, peak hours and days of
the week for higher traffic.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY TRAINING - Regis ter Today in AlamoTalent !
In an effort to continuously improve and enhance Online Teaching Certification program, the Instructional Technology Services unit worked with our Sister Colleges to revamp the Online Teaching Certification course curr iculum. The new Cert i f icat ion training wil l be cohort-based and piloted this Fall 2016. We expect the program to fully go live mid Fall 2016.The new eight-week Online Teaching Certification course is designed to provide faculty an “online student experience” while exploring a rich variety of topics including instructional design theories, active learning strategies, multimedia and strong
assessment practices. During the course, faculty will also have opportunities to collaborate with peers and receive actionable feedback for immediate application to their online course. Furthermore, prior to teaching an online course, faculty must also complete a training workshop on the use of Canvas and Applying the Quality Matters Rubric course. Before receiving a certificate of completion, faculty members will be invited to participate in a faculty centered peer-review process designed to certify the
qual i ty of the onl ine course.

Center at 210-486-0035.
