WELCOMEWe’ve been in the business of delivering great experiences for more than 50 years, enhancing Canberra’s appeal not only to residents, but also to those visiting our Nation’s Capital. This past year, more than 220,000 people visited our theatres, generating over $4.2m of expenditure on dining within the Civic Square cultural district. We are firm believers in a community that embraces art in all its forms and as a result is richer, more vibrant and more lively.

THE SEASONAs part of such a community, Canberra Theatre Centre’s 2016 line-up is all about the creation of feeling. We’ve compiled a program to delight children and grandparents alike, challenge our drama lovers and entertain everyone in The Famous Spiegeltent camped in Civic Square. Next year’s season is one of our best. We’re bringing the nation’s best theatre and dance companies to the capital for a unique program that will intrigue our patrons, and attract new audiences for the Canberra Theatre Centre.

My personal highlights include the children’s show The Peasant Prince – the inspiring story of Li Cunxin, currently Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet and bringing us The Nutcracker later in the year. I’m delighted that two of Australia’s most well known playwrights, Andrew Bovell (The Secret River) and Hannie Rayson (Hotel Sorrento), are also in the mix, raising questions about the issues we face in our daily lives, including the challenges of grief and love, and the threat of climate change.

This year, we are adding a new venue experience to our Season with the inclusion of The Famous Spiegeltent which will be in Civic Square next February and March. This will be an experience to rival them all and I urge you to partake in at least one of the numerous performances that will grace its stage.

FURTHER YOUR EXPERIENCE IN 2016Beyond the action on stage, you can extend your engagement with our 2016 shows through Take Part – a series of talks, Q&A sessions, forums and special events. Take Part includes collaborations with local and national institutions. Through Take Part, you can meet those involved in the productions, see linked events such as the William Yang exhibition at Canberra Museum and Gallery, and participate in stimulating talks to gain a deeper understanding of the performance. Make sure you look for ways to Take Part in the shows you select in Season 2016.

Theatre is, of course, an experience for all. To this end, we will continue provision of first-class access programs and facilities, and continue to provide tickets to those who otherwise couldn’t afford them through our Social Capital Program. You’ll have more leg room and improved sound and lighting in the Canberra Theatre in 2016, thanks to the ACT Government’s continued Capital Works program.

As always, a huge thank you to our Season Ticket holders for your support. I look forward to sharing an incredible Season of experiences with you all in 2016.

Sexy, spectacular and sparkling, La Clique completely redefines cabaret – shocking, surprising and scintillating. Take an electrifying trip to a world of glamour and abandon. Vocal, dance and acrobatic performances will leave you awestruck.

ENTWINES THE WORLDS OF CIRCUS, BURLESQUE & SPEAKEASYLa Clique is the feature show of The Famous Spiegeltent, this year at home outside the Canberra Theatre Centre in Civic Square. A magical cabaret like no other, La Clique was born in 2003 and has gone on to scoop a host of awards, including an Olivier, playing to sell-out houses in London, New York, Sydney, Paris and Montreal.

La Clique is a fantastic array of dangerously charismatic characters, supremely skilled in the dark arts of magic, burlesque, acrobatics and death-defying aerial feats.

Tennessee Williams was one of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th century. The Glass Menagerie is his most loved play. Put in the hands of Belvoir Artistic Director Eamon Flack, this production delivers on every account – winning Best Play and Best Actress at the 2015 Helpmann Awards.

A beautiful, slightly haunting play, The Glass Menagerie follows a family as it falls apart-along with the dreams that had given them some fragmented substance. Amanda Wingfield is a single mother played by the great Pamela Rabe. Her son Tom, (Luke Mullins) is an aspiring poet who works in a warehouse, her daughter Laura is studying to become a secretary. They live in a small

apartment pent up with fantasies and urges, rage and wounded tenderness. It is not a magnificent existence, but each has one true idea for a better life. Enter the Gentleman Caller …

THREE FAMILY MEMBERS EACH WITH ONE TRUE IDEA FOR A BETTER LIFE.The work is touching, depicting how change affects the individual (as well as the group), even as it rips them asunder.

WITTY, EFFERVESCENT AND PLAYFULThe Australian (Cacti)

SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY

CounterMove CANBERRA THEATRE

19-21 MAY

Sydney Dance Company’s CounterMove explores luminescence and life, humour and darkness in a double bill that celebrates the exhilaration and physicality of some of Australia’s finest dancers.

From Swede Alexander Ekman – one of the world’s most exciting choreographers – comes a hilarious, affectionate tribute that parodies modern art: Cacti. Ekman’s witty and energetic piece, employing the full company and a string quartet, will take you in with a knowing wink, then surprise with its bracing physicality.

Time Out Sydney lauded Cacti for its ‘infectious playful energy and absolutely incisive wit’. Crikey.com called it ‘blindingly brilliant’ and the Daily Telegraph noted the audience’s laughter was ‘impossible to suppress’.

SUBVERSIVE, ENTERTAINING AND BRILLIANTLY CONCEIVEDRafael Bonachela’s world premiere, Lux Tenebris, provides the perfect contrast: it is a deeply emotional exploration of light, darkness and beauty emerging from a dusky sonic landscape by composer and long-term Sarah Blasko collaborator Nick Wales.

LUCKIEST PRODUCTIONS AND TINDERBOX PRODUCTIONS

Little Shop of HorrorsLIFT UP YOUR HEAD – AND WATCH YOUR BACK!  A NEW BREED OF MUSICAL THEATRE STAR IS SPROUTING IN CANBERRA!When meek, down-and-out floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new and unusual plant species it seems like a serendipitous ticket to fame and fortune. He names it after his stunning but vulnerable co worker, Audrey. As Audrey II grows and grows into a foul-mouthed, smooth-talking, soul-singing carnivore, Seymour discovers that feeding his ambition starts to require juicier and less justifiable ingredients. Before he knows it, our accidental hero Seymour

and the gutsy but guileless Audrey must battle the perilous and persuasive plant – not just for their lives, but for the very future of planet earth!

Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin) are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most popular shows in the world. The rocking doo-wop score includes the songs ‘Feed Me’, ‘Suddenly Seymour’ and ‘Somewhere That’s Green’.

STATE THEATRE COMPANY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND FRANTIC ASSEMBLY (UK)

Things I Know To Be True BY ANDREW BOVELL

BRILLIANT THEATRE PARTICULAR TO OUR TIME AND PLACEThe Price family appears to be living the Australian dream – a loving household, a quarter acre block where time is measured by the seasonal changes in working class patriarch Bob’s beloved roses. The four kids have grown up and spread their wings, with only the youngest, Rosie, still at home. As the seasons turn, their story becomes darker and more difficult. But with complexity comes richness, resolution and meaning.

Epic in scope while deeply human in focus, Things I Know To Be True tugs at your heart while asking big questions about what keeps us going.

A newly commissioned play from one of our greatest contemporary playwrights, Andrew Bovell, (The Secret River, When the Rain Stops Falling and Lantana) is cause enough for celebration – but add to that an international collaboration with the extraordinary Frantic Assembly, (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time) a brilliant cast including stage icon Paul Blackwell, the outstanding Nathan O’Keefe (Betrayal, The Importance of Being Earnest) and introducing rising star Tilda Cobham-Hervey, and you have the ingredients of something special.

New York. Today. Corporate lawyer Amir Kapoor (Sachin Joab) is happy, in love, and about to land the biggest promotion of his life. But beneath all the trappings, success has come at a price.

IT’S A QUESTION OF FAITHWhen Amir and his artist wife, Emily, host an intimate dinner party at their Upper East Side apartment, what starts out as a friendly conversation soon escalates into something far more damaging.

In dialogue that bristles with wit and complexity, Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play puts contemporary attitudes toward religion under the microscope. The result is a fiercely intelligent and sensationally entertaining drama that reveals the prejudices and compromises of modern Western culture.

Guided by Sydney Theatre Company Resident Director Sarah Goodes (Switzerland), Disgraced is a complex and fearless production that will leave you breathless and keep you talking long after.

Country Song is a fictionalised story inspired by the life of Jimmy Little - a witty, warm journey back into Australia’s recent past. It’s a rollicking celebration featuring music from some of Australia’s renowned Indigenous entertainers and pure escapist entertainment, revelling in the healing power of music.

It’s the ’70s, and Jimmy takes a nostalgic trip through his past from talented teen to honey-voiced guitar-slinger to respected leader. Indigenous icons weave in and out of his life, as they chalk up a list of firsts for their people as Australia goes through a turbulent change.

Michael Tuahine leads a cast of six actor/musicians in this yarn drawing on the life of the gentleman balladeer, peppered with old-time hits from Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins to Jimmy’s own No.1 Royal Telephone and his covers of ‘80s hits Under the Milky Way and Blackfella/Whitefella.

Letters to LindyBY ALANA VALENTINE

Filled with humour and heartbreak, this stunning new work by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine explores the public’s relationship with one of 20th Century Australia’s most iconic figures.

A MOTHER’S LOSS. A NATION’S OBSESSION.The court case captivated a nation. A mother accused of murdering her child, her claim – that the baby was taken by a dingo – denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. The media circus, the rumours, the nation’s prejudices laid bare. And in the eye of the storm – Lindy Chamberlain.

Over three decades, from baby Azaria’s death to the final coroner’s report, the public’s fascination with Lindy has seldom waned. The National Library in Canberra holds a collection of more than 20,000 letters to Lindy. From sympathy to abuse, from marriage proposals to death threats and photos of dogs’ birthday parties (yes, really!), the correspondence traverses the gamut of human response to Lindy’s story.

Letters to Lindy draws on this extraordinary correspondence and interviews with Lindy herself, to create an enthralling, revealing, and long overdue dialogue between Lindy and the nation. It paints a singular portrait of the heartbreak, wisdom and resilience of a grieving mother.

Mozart’s brilliant opera The Marriage of Figaro follows the adventures of a household over one crazy day. Masters are lusting after their servants, servants are outwitting their masters – it’s the opera with everything: lovers and liaisons, disguises and desires, tricks and laughter.

THE DOWNTON ABBEY OF OPERA BUT HEAPS MORE FUN!In a wealthy household in Seville, Figaro is marrying Susanna, but the Count wants to seduce her first. Marcellina wants Figaro and the Countess just wants her husband back. But Susanna is smarter than all of them. After a crazy day of disguise and duplicity, will she get her happily ever after?

Award-winning creative duo Michael Gow and Robert Kemp have created a brand new production, featuring stunning period costumes and a clever set. A talented chamber orchestra and chorus of local children will accompany some of Opera Australia’s finest singers performing Mozart’s beautiful music.

It’s a delightful night out, suitable for the whole family.

A FABULOUS NIGHT OF NONSENSE

AND BRILLIANCE Stagenoise

THE PLAYHOUSE

13-24 SEPTEMBER

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY’S

The Wharf Revue 2016WRITTEN & CREATED BY JONATHAN BIGGINS, DREW FORSYTHE & PHILLIP SCOTT

The Wharf Revue’s irresistible blend of vitriol and vaudeville returns. Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott turn their delightfully poisonous gaze on the antics of our indignitaries, past and present – but mostly present. Phillip Scott’s virtuosity on piano contributes to the feeling that this is “like Gilbert and Sullivan on speed.” (Stagenoise)

If there’s one thing that a federal election year brings, it’s a smorgasbord of satirical goodies. There’ll be minor party pies, red meat, blue cheese and don’t forget your greens. More than enough food for thought.

LAUGH UNTIL THE TEARS ROLL DOWN YOUR CHEEKSThe Wharf Revue has become a Canberra institution. Its superbly delivered political satire gives the audience a chance to let off steam. We’ve all had a year of closely observing the truth that is stranger than fiction in Parliament House. Now, our not so revered leaders are centre stage: dancing, singing, wearing crazy wigs and misbehaving in a humourous tour de force. Don’t miss it – we all need a good laugh.

BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL, IMAGINATIVE AND UNIQUECarnival of the Animals whisks you away on a thrilling circus escapade inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns’ delightful salute to feathers, fur and fins.

Following wildly successful tours of Sydney and Melbourne, Montreal and New York the Circa Carnival comes to town. With whimsical tales of creatures of land and sea, these clowning acrobats tumble, fly, leap and spin their way through the many wondrous worlds of the animal kingdom.

Our zebras juggle and flip...

Our kangaroos skip and somersault...

Our elephants have street-cred and rhythm...

And even our dinosaur bones shake, clatter and roll to the music.

Find your inner creature as this gorgeous music comes alive for a whole new generation of circus, music and animal lovers. Circa offers a marvellous and unforgettable experience for children as an early taste of theatre and will be loved by the whole family.

BELL SHAKESPEARE

OthelloBY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTED BY PETER EVANS

A violent exploration of the thin line that separates love and jealousy, Othello is a relentless journey of vicious passion.

O, BEWARE, MY LORD, OF JEALOUSY; IT IS THE GREEN-EY’D MONSTER ACT 3, SC 3

A warrior on the fields of war, but felled by the sharpness of whispered words, Othello is a man swept up in desire, quickly turned to murderous ambition when he is betrayed by his military brother-in-arms, the cynically destructive Iago.

One of William Shakespeare’s most famous and passionate tragedies, Othello will be directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Artistic Director Peter Evans, in a gripping production that will touch audiences to their core, as envy is a weapon wielded with brazen savagery, and the complex contradictory nature of humanity is tested.

Starring Ray Chong Nee as Othello (Bell Shakespeare’s The Dream) and Yalin Ozucelik as Iago (Bell Shakespeare’s Henry IV), in one of Shakespeare’s most captivating and devastating pairings, this astonishing epic tragedy will rage with jealousy on stage.
