EUROCULTURE AS A MOOC?
MOTIVATION▪ Euroculture for a wider audience – “thinking” and “doing” Europe differently
▪ Exploring new forms of U4 cooperation for Göttingen, Uppsala, Groningen (and Krakow)
▪ Blending seminar teaching and the MOOC
THE MOOC▪ “European Culture and Politics”
19
EUROCULTURE AS A MOOC?
RESULTS▪ Four runs of the MOOC so far, the 5th is to start October 1
▪ 28.000 learners from some 150 countries altogether
(12.000 → 7.000 → 6.000 → 3.000)
▪ Different age groups (18 >25; >65 the most represented)
▪ Most learners have a university diploma (BA, MA)
▪ High workload (5 – 7 hours weekly), above-average level of participation, contentious discussion concerning Europe’s history, politics and society
▪ Better insights into virtual exchange platforms and the use of digital technologies in inter-university teaching
20
EUROCULTURE AS A MOOC?
BLENDING SEMINAR TEACHING AND MOOC▪ Flipped classroom did not work
▪ Small Private Online Course (SPOC) as an introductory reader
▪ Content development and discussion monitoring for the MOOC as a part of accredited/extra-curriculum project-based work
▪ SPIN OFFs – virtual exchange platform for the Intensive Programme Preparation, better use of virtual technologies in classroom learning
EUROCULTURE AS A MOOC? – TRANSCULTURALITY

MOTIVATION AND PRELIMINARY RESULTS▪ Blending internationalization at home and internationalization abroad to create 1
learning community located at different Universities
▪ Better sharing of expertise in interdisciplinary teaching of research practice
▪ Student-oriented teaching and supervision
▪ Coherence in teaching research practices and preparing for the IP (student conference)
▪ Support intercultural learning and exchange in a virtual context
▪ Preliminary results are mixed and we need to re-evaluate the project
▪ Challenges: institutional (schedules, teaching regulation, workload allocation); curriculum (establish coherence and avoid homogenization), course design (virtual exchanges can supplement but not replace the seminar format)
