Three New Courses Intro to Solar Electricity is an overview of the use of sunlight to produce electricity and the practical and economical use of photovoltaic power systems. Learn the importance of energy efficiency and the economics of photovoltaics.Photovoltaics, Design & Site Assessment is where you learn about the steps of performing a site audit prior to installation of a PV system. This course focuses on defining the solar window, system site placement and sizing, lead analysis and energy efficiency.Photovoltaics - Advanced In this course topics include batteries, wiring configurations, system diagramming, National Electrical Code, component selection, wiring, safety and system maintenance.

Renewable Energy Certificates are designed to help prepare students with the theoretical knowledge necessary for a career/job in the photovoltaic energy fields. Learners will acquire hands on skills in the installation, operations and maintenance of the systems. The photovoltaic certificate requires at least 9 credits of course work and credits may be applied to certain programs as electives. Additional areas under development are wind turbines, geothermal and solar thermal. Combining the renewable energy certificates with the sustainable facilities certificate and the energy engineer certificate will lead to a powerful portfolio of credentials within the energy industries.

Arrows above are value added by showing that students may come from a variety of backgrounds, including professional engineers, registered architects and people with advanced degrees.

Certificate in Basic

Environmental Studies

Figure 1. The pathway to a Certificate in Basic Environmental Studies leading to one of four areas of study at Milwaukee Area Technical College: 1) Environmental Health and Water Quality, 2) Sustainable Facilities Operations, 3) Quality Engineering Technology, 4) Power Engineering, 5) Renewable Energy. The certificate will indicate one of the four areas of emphasis.

Laddering into a Sustainable Diploma and/or Degree

The Basic Environmental Studies certificate ladders into one of five areas of study.

From a financial accounting efficiency perspective, students from all four fields will be in first two classes together in the Pre-College Division.

The last course in the certificate is separate in that it is part of the respective diploma or degree program, taught by the diploma or degree program faculty.

The third course is transitional laddering into a diploma or degree program, taught by the faculty from the respective department. The four courses that ladder into the diploma or degree program are designed by the faculty as a survey, are appropriate for people who are new to the field, and are listed below:

Introduction to Environmental Health and Water Quality (AAS)

Buildings, Energy and Technology (AAS)

Introduction to Commercial and Industrial Efficiencies (AAS)

Introduction to Power Engineering (Diploma)

Introduction to Renewable Energy (Diploma)
