Administrator’s message
Welcome to École Glen Park Public School!
Glen Park is a large, dynamic and vibrant school community. Whether you are a long-time Glen Park family or a new family to our
school, we believe you will be impressed with the energy, dedication, and talent of our teaching and support staff. Over the course of
the year your child will experience an excellent academic foundation with a rich arts and extra-curricular complement. This year we
will address academic achievement, both in French and English, through a school-wide focus on literacy and numeracy. Our staff
meet regularly to examine and share best practices for reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy. We look forward to our
various unique clubs, sports programs and teams, as well as our choir. We are very proud of the work we do here at École Glen Park
P.S. Each year our staff, students and community work together to improve practices and build upon a safe, secure and enriching
environment.
Thank you for your support and best wishes for a wonderful year at École Glen Park Public School.

Attendance
Arrival and Dismissal from School
Whenever possible, please write a note to your child’s teacher regarding special instructions for arrival, dismissal or bussing.
Please drop off and pick up your child, or children, at the various designated classroom lines outside on the pavement area at
the back of the school. At dismissal, older siblings are encouraged to join the line of the youngest sibling in order to connect
with the adult picking them up. Dalemount Child Care students will have separate procedures as outlined in their handbook.
French Immersion Kindergarten students will line up on the paved area at the back of the school for both arrival and dismissal.
English Kindergarten students will be dropped off and picked up by the Kindergarten gate near Glengrove Ave. parking lot. For
matters of safety, only students and staff are to be inside the building and, with the exception of the front door, all doors will be
locked after morning recess. All students being picked up for, or returned from, appointments must be signed in and out by the
parent or guardian in the Student Sign In/Out book located in the office. At that point, a staff member will ensure that your child
is either delivered to you, or returned to class, safely.
Reporting Lates and Absences/What is the Safe Arrival Program?
If your child will be late or absent, please contact the school before 8:40 a.m. by phone at 416-395-2468. You may also leave
a message on the school answering machine before and after school hours. A note to your child’s teacher is also appreciated.
If your child will be absent for an extended period of time, please see the administration. If your child is absent without
notification, the school secretary or Safe Arrival volunteer will attempt to contact the parents/guardians by phone. Please
ensure that the office has updated information regarding daytime and emergency contact names and telephone numbers.
We emphasize that parents/guardians ensure that their children arrive before 8:25 a.m. as students will be marked absent on
the Provincial Attendance Record, which is in compliance with the Education Act and T.D.S.B. Code of Conduct.
Severe Weather Cancellation Guidelines
Occasionally, severe weather conditions may require the TDSB to cancel transportation or, in extreme conditions, close schools.
The decision to close schools is made by the Director of Education. If transportation is cancelled or schools are closed, the local
media will be informed before the beginning of the school day. You can tune in to your radio and television news stations for
the latest information. If weather conditions become extreme after students are in school, students will remain in the school
until they are picked up by a parent or someone designated by a parent. Students are kept indoors for recess and lunch time
for a number of weather conditions. When temperature and wind chill measure –28ºC or lower, students are kept indoors.
Recess and lunch may be shortened or cancelled by the principal if the temperature and wind chill reading is between –20C
and –28ºC. Students are kept indoors for recess and lunch time for a number of weather conditions. When temperature and
wind chill measure -28ºC or lower, students are kept indoors. Recess and lunch may be shortened or cancelled by the principal

Safety Procedures
École Glen Park P.S. strives to be an allergy-safe school
Because several of our students have life-threatening allergies, especially to nuts, we need to observe the following policy:
All food that is brought to school - whether for lunch or snacks - must be nut free. The only safe way to determine that a
product is completely free of nuts or traces is to read labels. Please check labels yourselves so you can keep all children safe.
For special occasions, such as Hallowe’en or Valentine’s Day, teachers and class parents will help coordinate safe snacks.
If you send a special treat for your child’s birthday or other special occasions (e.g., Hallowe’en, Valentine’s Day), please be
especially sure that it is nut-free.
Remind your children that they are not permitted to share lunches and snacks.
If your child has an allergy and requires an epi-pen, please ensure they keep one on themselves at all times, and one in the
office. If they have asthma and require an inhaler, please make sure that it is accessible. Parents must alert the office and
teacher if their child has any special health concerns.
Parents of children with allergies (food, environment, insects) must complete an Anaphylaxis Emergency Plan form and
Administration of Prescribed Medication form. These forms are available in the school office and will be handed out to
students by the classroom teachers.
The T.D.S.B. community is encouraged to reduce the use of fragrances and scented products because of the impact of
fragrance chemicals on health, well-being, productivity and lifestyle of those affected.
Keeping all of our students safe requires a community effort.
Please be vigilant in order to create a nut-free environment!!!
Lice Policy
Please check your child’s hair periodically for signs of lice. Evidence of lice may include small white or brown tear-drop
shaped nits near the scalp, especially around the ears and nape of the neck. Children will likely experience itching and
may complain of a sandy feeling in their hair. Please remind your child to place their hat in the sleeve of their coat, and to
never share hats or hairbrushes. If your child does have lice, please note that we observe a nit-free policy at École Glen
Park P.S. Your child must first be examined at the office before returning to class. If nits are found, you will be required
to pick up your child from school immediately.

Items to Note
Bussing/Parking
The area in front of the main doors is off-limits to all buses, cars, and vans.
The TDSB transportation policy guarantees bussing to all students living 1.6 km or further from their home school. At École Glen Park P.S., most
of the buses drop off and pick up the students from the bus loop on Glengrove Ave. Some of our buses use the parking lot on Englemount Ave. Due to
the use of this parking lot by TDSB transportation, we are asking for parents to not use the Englemount parking lot during school hours so we can create
the safest environment possible for our students. We ask that you park along Glengrove and allow your children to enter the school field or playground
where they can be supervised by École Glen Park staff.
Additionally, the parking lot has a limited number of spaces which we would like to reserve for staff use. We request that you look for legal street parking
when visiting the school during the instructional day.
We kindly ask that visitors:
- reverse into parking spaces
- not block the dumpsters
- refrain from idling vehicles
- only use accessible parking spaces with applicable permits
Lost and Found
Our Lost and Found is located on the first floor near the gymnasium. Periodically, the children will be directed by the school to check for any articles they
may have lost. Parents are also invited to come into the school and check for their children’s lost articles. Please identify all your children’s belongings,
including lunch kits, sports equipment, and clothing with their first and last names. Unclaimed articles which remain at the school will be donated.
Cell Phones
Mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs), may not distract students from learning and/or school
activities. Students are permitted to bring cell phones to school for emergency purposes, however these must be turned off during the instructional day.
Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to call the office in case of emergency.
Electronic Devices
Students may not bring electronic devices such as iPods, DS systems, or other games that can easily be lost or stolen. We cannot be responsible if these
items go missing.
Dress Code
For all students to learn and succeed, a focused learning environment is of primary importance. To learn and succeed, students at Glen Park from JK to
grade 6 will come to school free from:
- Clothes with swear words or inappropriate language
- Clothes that are see-through, unless worn with appropriate undergarments
- Bare midriff
- Students may wear head coverings for religious reasons
- No hats, bandanas or any other non religious head covering should be worn once a student enters the school building

Street Proofing
The Toronto Police encourages you to teach your child the following :
His/her name, address, and phone number
To dial 9-1-1 in an emergency
To communicate with you when they feel unsafe or afraid
To keep you informed as to his/her whereabouts at all times
Never to admit to being alone in the home when answering the telephone
Never to invite strangers into the house or answer the door when alone
Never to approach or enter a stranger’s car
Never to travel or play alone – always be with friends
To trust their feelings and say “NO” to an adult if that adult wants them to do something that is wrong
Not to accept gifts from strangers
To tell you if someone has asked them to keep a secret from you
That no one has the right to touch any part of his/her body that a bathing suit would cover
That if he/she is being followed, or approached to closely, to run home or go to the nearest public place and yell for help
To report to your school authorities or a police officer anyone who acts suspiciously towards him/her
Never to play in deserted buildings or isolated areas
Never to enter anyone’s home without your permission
To avoid taking shortcuts through parks and field
Never to show his/her money and if attacked to give up the money rather than risk injury
That a police officer is a friend who can be relied upon when he/she is lost or needs assistance
At the school, the safety of your child is our most important priority. As a staff we have implemented these safe school procedures:
Teachers discuss streetproofing issues with the students
Students are sent in pairs to the washroom and our staff checks washrooms and entrances regularly
Doors are locked with the exception of the front door after students have entered the school
Signs are posted directing visitors to come to the office and sign in
Staff approach individuals they do not know and ask them to identify themselves
Visitors and volunteers wear badges identifying themselves as guests in the school
Supervision is provided at the beginning of the day
Together we can keep our school and community safe for children.

School Improvement Initiatives Glen Park continues on our path of improving student achievement with the following school-wide initiatives:
Writing Walls
Each classroom will have a wall dedicated to writing. These evolving displays are based on the First Steps Purposes for Writing:
Writing to recount (for example: diary, retelling, review, etc.)
Writing to persuade (for example: slogan, job application, editorial, etc.)
Writing to explain (for example: journal, rules, timetable, etc.)
Writing to instruct (for example: recipe, list, experiment, etc.)
Writing to describe (for example: label, menu, index, etc.)
Writing to entertain (for example: fairy-tales, song, adventure stories, poetry, etc.)
Writing to inquire (for example: questioners, surveys, etc.)
Writing to socialize (for example: invitations, text messages, etc.)
Math Walls
Each classroom will have a wall dedicated to math. These evolving displays reflect student-generated solutions, communication and strategies. It is important for students to be able to refer to
their own work as a reference for math communication and strategies for solving problems. The emphasis now is on students making sense of their own thoughts and representing them in a
meaningful way.
Success Criteria/Guided Instruction/Descriptive Feedback
Success criteria will be co-constructed with the students and used as a reference tool throughout the learning pathway. These criteria anchor charts will be visible and available to students as a
reference for their learning progress and will target goals for improvement. Once the success criteria are determined at the beginning of the Learning Pathway, high quality descriptive feedback
becomes more intentional and meaningful. We use high-quality descriptive feedback with students, to improve student learning. In each classroom, there is a space dedicated to daily small
group instruction. The purpose of guided instruction is to reduce the gap between the students’ current level of knowledge and skills and the learning goals. This intentional teaching helps
students learn by providing them with precise information about what they are doing well, what needs improvement and what specific steps they need to take.
Co-Teaching/ Co-Planning:
We are committed to establishing consistent instructional and assessment practices at Glen Park. The staff work collaboratively to establish alignment between divisions (Primary- Kindergarten
– Grade 3/ Junior– Grades 4-6), amongst grades and within tracks (French and English).
Restorative Practices/ Community Circles
Community is created in each classroom through ongoing conversations relating to social and emotional development and relevant issues impacting our students. Glen Park uses a restorative
approach which helps maintain and repair relationships for fostering a sense of social responsibility and shared accountability.
Parent/ Community Engagement
Through our committed staff, an active School Council, performances, community BBQs, Fun Fair, sporting events, Volunteer Reading Program and our Parent Resource Library, we are
dedicated to engaging our community partners. We continue to welcome parents/ guardians to actively engage in school-life as we enhance our partnerships to further support student learning
at Glen Park.
Eco-Schools
Glen Park is currently a Silver Standing Eco School. We are looking to develop ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the

Glen Park Nutrition Program
At Glen Park Public School we place a great value upon the overall health of our students. By establishing an environ-
ment that stresses the link between the well-being of both body and mind, we are hopeful that our students will appreci-
ate the benefits of striving to be fit mentally, academically, and physically throughout their lives.
Perhaps the most popular programs we offer at Glen Park, in order to honour our commitment to the health of our
students, would be our “Breakfast Program” and our “Morning Snack Program.” Studies show that a child’s ability to
focus and retain information improves when they are well nourished. Our programs are volunteer-based and funded by
municipal dollars through the Toronto Foundation for Student Success and with Provincial dollars through the Canadian
Living Foundation. We also receive donations of food from local businesses such as: Bagel World, What-a-Bagel and
Moxie’s. Our breakfast program begins feeding students at 7:45 a.m. and provides both a nutritious start to their day
and an invaluable service to many of our working parents. The snack program is prepared in the same kitchen and then
delivered to each class before the morning recess.
Even with the donations of the organizations mentioned above, we do depend upon contributions from Glen Park
families in order to make these programs feasible. If you are able to volunteer in the kitchen some mornings it would be
greatly appreciated. The cost for each program is as follows:
Breakfast Program $55.00 per child for the school year
Morning Snack Program $55.00 per child for the school year
This translates to roughly thirty cents per day per student. If you want your child to participate in these programs please
complete the appropriate forms that will come home with your child, and return them to the school along with your
payment.
We thank you for your support of our nutrition programs and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact
the office.

Providing for
Students With Special Needs
School Support Team
The School Support Team is a partnering of school
personnel, Student Support Services personnel, and the
parents who discuss programming directions and needs for
those students who have been identified by their classroom
teacher. The Team consists of the Principal, Vice-Principal,
the Methods and Resource Teacher (M.A.R.T.), the school
psychologist, the school social worker, the school speech
pathologist, the classroom teacher, and the parents/
guardians. Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend
and will receive a written invitation to inform them of an
upcoming meeting. The School Support Team meets once a
month.
Resource Room
The Resource Room at École Glen Park P.S. provides
withdrawal or in-class support to students who have been
identified by the School Support Team as being in need of
special assistance. The help usually focuses on one or two
areas of concern, such as expressive language, receptive
language, or organizational skills. The goal is to assist the
child in acquiring the necessary skills or learning strategies
which will allow him/her to be successful in their regular
classroom.
École Glen Park School Council
The School Council at École Glen Park P.S. is an active organization that invites participation from all parents/
guardians/caregivers. Please join and support their efforts to advance and secure quality education for your child. The
Council plays a large role in fundraising, organizing community celebrations, and working with the school staff and
administration. Information meetings on various issues are held throughout the year. Become a part of planning and
implementing one of the major events of the school year, our annual Fun Fair and Raffle. Meetings begin at 6:30 pm and
are held in the staffroom.
Staffing Committees
The Toronto District School Board requires planning for class size and grade composition in each school year to be
organized by a Staffing Committee that must consist of the Principal, Vice-Principal, and Teaching Staff. At École Glen
Park P.S., parent representatives are given the opportunity to discuss the Staffing Model with the Principal before it is
sent to the Superintendant for approval.
