~ École Bellevue School ~ April 2017 avril Principal’s Message Dear Bellevue Families, We wish everyone a restful and fun filled Spring Break! The kids really deserve it and I hope they are well rested and ready to finish up our school year. With Spring here, it’s a great time to put some extra clothes in your child’s backpack. It is still very chilly in the mornings and at morning recess, so thank you for continuing to send mittens and toques. Names and labels help us get lost items back to students quickly as well. We are looking forward to spending more time outside! Here are some opportunities to get involved in our school. Mrs. Awid will be hosting Family Math Night on April 12 th for grades K-3 students and families. This is a great opportunity to learn some fun math games to promote numeracy skills. If you are interested in volunteering for Math Night please email, [email protected]. Bellevue School’s Fundraising Society will be hosting a Family Movie Night on March 21 st . The doors open at 6pm and the movie starts at 6:30 pm. There is more information in the newsletter. For our staff’s April professional development day, we have a presentation from the Alberta Teacher’s Association happening here at the school. As part of our school’s 3-year plan, we are increasing awareness and knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. We will be doing a Blanket Exercise where we will experience over 500 years of history by taking on the roles of Indigenous peoples of Canada. The other part of our day will be spent on collaboration and division level opportunities. I hope everyone has the chance to spend some good family time over Spring Break. Semaine de la Francophonie The Bellevue school community once again

celebrated French culture during our Semaine de la Francophonie. All grades 1 -6 students participated in a Cabane a Sucre/Carnaval, and attended a bilingual concert by Franco-Alberta award winning musician Daniel Gervais. This was funded by the Official Languages in Education Program. Pi Day Update Our Pi Day Fundraiser was a great success. Bellevue students raised $1725.00 that was donated to the Leduc and District Food Bank which services our community also. Thanks to all who donated!

Positive Referrals Each morning, teachers send some students to the

principal’s office. Together we celebrate their good deeds as the students strive to “Be the Best They Can Be”. Each month the Beaumont Boston Pizza donates a pizza to be shared with the lucky students whose names are drawn from all the students who received a Positive Referral during the month. Congratulations to: Alexis R., Paige D., Nihal N., Reid S., Lauren A. and Selah R.

These students will be joining Mme El-Khatib & Mme Ivanc on Monday, April 11th. Thanks to Boston Pizza for supplying the pizza!

Wristband Challenge We are grateful to the Aquafit Centre for their donation of family swim passes as prizes for the wristband challenge. The names that were selected this month are: Isabelle C., Aliyah S., Faith B., Boston M., and Ara B. We hope you enjoy your free swim!

Grade 1, 2 & 3 Swimming Lessons Students in grades 1, 2 and 3 will soon be participating in School swimming lessons at the Beaumont Aqua-Fit Centre. Depending on time schedules of your child’s school curriculum, your child will be attending either ½ hour or 1 hour lessons during their session. The dates and times of the lessons will be communicated to you once confirmed. The cost is $30 and payment will be due by April 18th. Trained staff will provide a safe and fun learning environment for your children and we welcome you to come and watch if you are able to. Along with the feedback you provide on the lesson registration form, our Instructors will evaluate your child to make sure he or she is placed in the appropriate level. This program is designed to accommodate all levels of swimmers from the non-swimmer to the very experienced swimmer. Instructors will focus on both swimming and water safety skills and will continuously monitor your child’s progress. This program completely ties in with the regular Red Cross Swim lesson program offered to the rest of the public through our general programs. Children will need to bring their bathing suits, towel, shampoo and if they wish, indoor flip flops as we do not allow outdoor foot wear into the change rooms or on the pool deck. This is for health and safety reason and we appreciate your understanding in regards to this. An information note as well as permission forms will be sent home with the students who are participating after spring break.

From the Library March has wrapped up with another fun book fair, raising over $3000 for new books for the library. Thank you to Mrs. Delwisch, Mrs. Reid, and Mrs. Farrell for helping with the fair and to Mrs. Mitchell, Madeline, and Elizabeth for helping with the preparations and decorations. Special thanks to student helpers Ryann, Cadenz, Carson, Tonika, and Selah for their help with set-up and clean-up. Heather Dyckerhoff Library Clerk

Grade 4, 5 & 6 Rabbit Hill Trip

Thank-you to all of the parents who came out to Rabbit Hill to help put on ski equipment, size boots, find lost mittens and help the students strengthen

their skiing and snowboarding skills! It is appreciated by both Rabbit Hill and the school! Special thanks to

Mr. Degagne, Mr. LeBlanc and Mr. Gordon for helping to transport equipment.

Music Notes The Grade 4’s and 5’s have completed their recorder unit for this year. They have enjoyed playing two part harmony on the recorders. We are amazed at how quickly they have progressed with the recorders. In April we will learn some spring songs, explore more composers and continue to build on the basic music skills. The Grade 5s will have an introduction to the ukuleles and the Grade 6s will revisit the ukuleles occasionally throughout the remainder of the year. It is impressive to hear the students applying skills such as rhythm patterns, dynamics, pitch, tempo and instrument exploration on a consistent basis.

We would like to extend an invitation to anyone who would like to share their musical abilities in class to contact us. The students love to have someone come in to perform and listen to. Music is a great gift to share!

Dear Bellevue Families, Staffing has been completed regarding the reconfiguration of Beaumont with the opening of École Champs Vallée School (ÉCVS). Placements were based on staff requests and by following Black Gold’s Administrative Procedures. As you all know, Bellevue School will be hosting ÉCVS until the building is ready for them to move. We are sad to see some of our staff members go, however I can assure you both schools are in good hands and we will all be together for the start of the next school year. Here is the preliminary lineup of teachers for both schools:

We wish everyone the best moving forward, and luckily we are all neighbours in this great town! Respectfully, Jennifer El-Khatib Principal/Directrice École Bellevue School
