VIRTUAL DEMENTIA TOUR On Wednesday, September 20, 2017 from 1:00-4:00 pm, Cohasset Elder Affairs will sponsor The Virtual Dementia Tour at Willcutt Commons. This program provides critical insight for those caring for people with dementia, involv- ing a simulated tour that puts attendees in the shoes of de- mentia sufferers. When an individual is diag- nosed with dementia, it affects his family, friends and com- munity. In addition, its impact may be felt in long-term care settings and hospitals. This program, used internationally since 2001, helps shed light on some of the seemingly difficult behaviors exhibited by those with dementia. Experts agree that education and proper training are the best ways to help caregivers provide better care. Virtual Dementia offers an experi- ence designed to help caregiv- ers understand and relate to the issues facing the dementia patient, thus setting the stage for improved care. It may take as little as fifteen minutes to walk through this program, but the results will last a lifetime. Reservations required. Please call 781-383- 9112 to reserve your spot.

3 - COHASSET VISTA SEPTEMBER 2017

Back when Mary Edmonds was an emergency room nurse at Quincy Hospital, things were different than today. One of the most significant changes? The uniforms. “I wore a cap until I quit,” said Mary, who turned 98 on Sept. 4 and rose to supervisor before she retired. “I made eve-rybody in the ER wear white uniforms. Now, when people come in, they’re sick, and there are people running around in all kinds of jumpsuits and colors and you don’t know who you’re talking to. They wear nametags, but who can read them? All my nurses wore white and a cap, so when you came in, you knew who you were talking to.” “We took care of the patient in those days,” Mary continued. “It’s altogether a different world now. Now, you can get an associate’s degree in 18 months on the Internet, and you probably haven’t had the same number of hours with a patient.” Born and raised in Quincy, Mary followed her brother to Boston University where he was attending medical school. Mary had uncles and cousins who were doctors, too. But, in the post-Depression era, Mary’s father soon couldn’t af-ford to send both her and her brother to the school. Mary then went to nursing school in Quincy. She chose to con-tinue there, even when circumstances changed, and she could have returned to BU. When she was growing up, respect was important, according to Mary. Her father was Irish, she said, and he taught his children to thank their mother when they left the table. “It was automatic, whether we liked the meal or not,” Mary said. “You did things for each other because back then, no one had anything. I always brought bread next door to our neighbors when my mother baked it. Lending the cup of sugar back and forth between neighbors was true.” The only girl in her family, Mary, raised three daughters with her husband, who worked for Procter and Gamble. The family moved to Cohasset in 1950. All three of her children followed their mother into the medical field: two are Army nurses and one is an X-ray technician. They now live in Colorado, Texas, and Nevada with grown children of their own, making Mary a grandmother seven times over. Her age may prevent her from playing her two favorite sports, tennis and golf, but Mary still stays up late to watch matches such as the Williams sisters dueling in the U.S. Open. When she lived in Quincy, she played on city courts, and cities faced off against each other, Mary said. As is the case with many only girls, she followed her brothers, play-ing golf because they did. The secret to her longevity? Mary calls it luck. “I did everything everybody else did. I drove a car too fast, I smoked for 49 years,” Mary said. “I eat when I’m hun-gry, I’m not overweight. It’s the luck of the draw. I’ve been to a lot of funerals. I can’t say eat your vegetables - I don’t preach any of that stuff. Whatever I’m doing, I’m not changing.” “One thing that I think is very important,” says Mary. “Don’t lose your friends of all ages.” Mary continued, “It only takes half an hour to keep in touch. You might think of someone you were close to in high school. Give them a call. Even if you haven’t seen them in a long while, do it.” “Time goes by very fast,” she added. “Older people can tell you that.”

***** If you delayed enrolling in Medicare B so that you could stay in your Marketplace plan (also known as Exchanges or Qualified Health plans- QHPs) you may be eligible to request time-limited equitable relief. If you are eligible, this may include retroactive or imme-diate Medicare Part B enrollment and a reduction in or elimination of Medicare Part B late enrollment penalties. People who were or are enrolled in Marketplace coverage who are entitled to premium-free Medicare Part A can apply for this relief through September 2017. In gen-eral, you will not benefit from having a QHP and Medi-care at the same time, because when you enroll in Medi-care, you are generally NO longer eligible to receive cost assistance from your QHP. Confusion about QHPs and Medicare may lead some people to make enrollment mis-takes.
