I was moving out of my dorm in college at the end of the year, sitting on the floor outside my door and waiting for my resident assistant to check me out. Heidi Bamberg, a neighbor of mine was also waiting. She sat down next to me. I didn’t know her that well, but we had talked before briefly. She said when we both come back next year we should hang out. I agreed, but we both were merely saying it out of obligation, not because we actually thought we’d do it. It hadn’t happened this year, why would we be friends next year?

The Backstory

Page 3: Coffee Stories

I saw Heidi in the lobby, not doing anything while I was on my way to a local coffee chop nearby. The shop is called ArtSix, and it was started by six art graduates from my college. It’s one of the most popular shops in Denton, TX. We said we’d hang out, so I figured inviting her wouldn’t hurt. So off we went…

Next Year

Religion and Politics. Those are the wrong topics to bring up over anything, but coffee is pretty much the opener of the mind these days, and ArtSix is a place that beckons free thought. So naturally when me and Heidi are sitting there, with nothing in common, it easily slips in. When I was in that coffee shop, I never thought I would be having the most pivotal conversation of my life.

The Wrong Topic

Page 5: Coffee Stories

Heidi grew up a Seventh Day Adventist, and I a Catholic. At this point in our lives, we were neither/or. Heidi had renounced in believing in anything, and I hadn’t really figured that out yet. I knew I believed in something, but I didn’t know what. We talked about our strongest beliefs, and over three long cups of coffee, became best friends. This is the best conversation I have ever had, and with the person I least expected it from.

Two Different People

Page 6: Coffee Stories

This Coffee Stories project, is an innovative one, that can lend itself to anything. The ideas alone that have been generated over a cup of coffee have indeed changed the face of the world and the people in it.

Although I think this would make a far more interesting e-Book, a published work surrounding the development of this projects and its successes would make for an interesting read.

Horribly cliché, but done right this could have a huge impact on the world of comics and design. A comic revolving around the ideas generated in a coffee shop atmosphere. A different story, and different place, and a different time, every time.

My personal favorite, since it attaches itself to social networking, and is constantly evolving. A sustainable approach to any project or idea, and a method that can have several ways to disseminate information across the globe.
