For 35 years, COF has represented strength and stability for the charitable sector in the Central Okanagan. We have built a reputation of trust and continue to make a difference by focusing on our key areas: endowment building and personalized donor services, broad and effective grant making and community leadership.

The COF is a charitable organization created through gifts from thousands of generous people. And because we operate in perpetuity, these gifts will continue to grow and provide resources for generations to come.

In my ongoing discussions with our donors, volunteers, staff, professional advisors and community leaders, I am truly motivated by the promise and potential that lies ahead for COF.

Community Foundations of Canada has recently launched a national initiative called ‘Smart & Caring Communities.’ I think this term fits perfectly with the goals and vision of the people of the Central Okanagan as we strive to build a truly inclusive community.

he Central Okanagan Foundation is in its 35th year of working with individuals and families and using philanthropic dollars to have an impact; to bring about something positive for a better community.

Since joining the COF in July, I have been overwhelmed by the community’s warm welcome. My education and career have taken me across this vast country and back, and to a certain extent around the world, but I feel like I’m home — this is definitely the community I want to live and work in and I feel so fortunate to be back in the Okanagan.

The heartfelt hospitality I have received is a reflection of the remarkable role COF plays in our community. Every day I am reminded how COF touches lives, from one corner of our community to the next. I have met grateful students who have earned bursaries and scholarships provided by generous COF donors. I have sat down with charitable individuals who are making provisions for COF in their will. I have talked to families who are honouring a lost loved one by establishing a memorial fund.

I have also had the opportunity to visit local agencies whose vitally important work has received support through our grants program. We continually strive to collaborate with and support organizations doing outstanding charitable work in our community, and also to identify and address unmet needs that can be met from philanthropic support.

T

ommunity foundations like the Central Okanagan Foundation are a unique charity within the charitable sector; they are a true reflection of the community’s needs, hopes, and vision. The COF can use its resources to

make a difference, look for ways that our dollars can spark change and leverage other funding.

In our annual report, you’ll read about ways that we’ve worked to do this, and about the different community organizations and people we’ve helped. Among the unique opportunities the COF was provided with in 2011/12:

Partnership with Service Canada to deliver Community Entity program. Partnership with Kelowna Community Resources, United

Way and the City of Kelowna to deliver Education Series. Impact Fund: allows our donors to create legacies and

make a difference in their community immediately.

In the past year, 12 new funds were created, bringing the total to date to 286. From endowed gifts totaling nearly $1 million last year, our assets have grown to more than $21 million at the end of our fiscal year. During that time, more than $750,000 was distributed to a wide range of charities. They have done admirable work with those resources.

We recognize the generosity of donors who have chosen to partner with the COF to achieve their philanthropic

goals and who are committed to supporting those in need, especially during challenging financial times.

Sadly, Lionel Wace, a founding director of the COF, passed away this year. Without the unwavering vision and dedication of Lionel and our 15 other founding members, the COF would not exist and would not be the vital, cornerstone of our community that it is today.

The board also bid farewell to two staff members and two Board directors this year, all of whom played key roles during their tenure with the COF — Leanne Hammond-Komori , executive director, Cheryl Claeys, donor relations coordinator, Don Turri, chair of finance and Tom Fellhauer, past chair and chair of the organizational development committee.

Thank you to the COF staff Cheryl Miller and Mark Oakley for their support and dedication in 2011/12 and thank you and farewell to directors Ross Langford (chair of organizational development) and Jodie Foster Sexsmith (chair of communications) who are finishing their terms this year.

The board offers a warm welcome to Bruce Davies, our new executive director, staff members Mya Brewis, Shannon Born and the 12 new fund holders who join the COF family.

As my tenure at COF comes to a close, I look back on the many directors, committee volunteers and staff that I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the past 14 years. I have had the great fortune of working with some of the best community-minded people. That commitment shone through many hours of discussions and deliberations to set a Strategic Plan in place for the COF in the past year. Now, I will watch with enthusiasm and great support as it is carried forward.

Intercultural Society of the Central Okanagan

magine walking through a slum neighbourhood, where young children beg for food, there is open sewage and garbage in the streets and human

trafficking is rife. Not in Kelowna, you think?

In Kelowna this is merely a ‘mock slum’, part of a demonstration to bring awareness to the struggles and joys of people living in different countries all around the world. Called Global Children’s Village, it is one of a series of events held during Global Citizen Kelowna Week and supported by the Central Okanagan Foundation.

“The objective is to create a reaction that will start a conversation among the families in the Okanagan about the issue of poverty and provide tangible examples of how they can make a difference,” explains Joyce Brinkeroff, with the Intercultural Society of the Central Okanagan.

After their experience in the ‘mock slum’, children visit a dozen different ‘countries’ and participate in various cultural activities — making origami sumo wrestlers in Japan, traditional tortillas in Mexico, learning a traditional dance in Kenya, fishing in Finland — where they ‘work’ to receive coins. These coins can then be spent to purchase medical supplies or build a school or dig a water well and build infrastructure to improve the slum. Throughout the day the children watch as this ‘mock slum’ is transformed.

Centre Culturel Francophone de L’Okanagan

ather Pandosy was a pioneering Catholic priest who settled in Kelowna’s Mission area, establishing orchards and the first vineyard more than 150 years ago.

He was also one of the first Francophones to settle in the area and is the centerpiece of a public art project at the Centre Culturel Francophone de l’Okanagan (French Cultural Centre).

The Central Okanagan Foundation supported the public art project, which will see six murals developed by artist Henri Brazeau. The murals will be painted on the windows of the Centre Culturel Francophone de l’Okanagan downtown.

“The murals depict the history of Francophones in the area and the impact they have had on shaping the Okanagan Valley. Many people don’t even know there is a significant history there, besides Father Pandosy, so it’s an important project,” explains Camille Cote-Marcil, executive director of the Centre Culturel Francophone de l’Okanagan.

Agur Lake Camp Society

utdoor adventures, fresh air, new experiences — what more could a child ask for when it comes to summer camp?

Just west of Summerland, the Agur Lake Camp Society has established a barrier-free wilderness camp and recreational facility for children and adults with special needs and their families, so they too can experience the joy and calm that comes with spending time in the woods.

The camp is still under construction, with three 1,200-square-foot cabins now in place. Support from the Central Okanagan Foundation helped ensure that two of the cabins have running water for kitchen and bathroom facilities. The camp expects to welcome its first guests in Summer 2013.

“Each cabin is fully wheelchair accessible so they are not your typical ‘wilderness cabins’,” explains Christina MacMaster, society manager. “It’s a camp for families so that everyone can come and enjoy the experience.”The camp is unique as there is no other like it in BC —it is modeled after William Watson Lodge in Alberta’s Kananaskis region.

Grants & Endowments

Marie McIntoshhilanthropist. Educator. Activist. Marie McIntosh was many things to many people. But her love of music knew no boundaries, whether it was listening to classical music, playing the violin or helping young talented musicians.

A former teacher, Marie donated scholarship money to the Kelowna Community Music School for many years as she felt strongly about combining her love of classical music with education. After her passing in 2011, she left a legacy of $20,000 to the Kelowna Community Music School where she was an honorary board member and generous donor. When the school deliberated on how best to honour Marie for her generous gift, the board unanimously agreed to establish an endowment fund in Marie’s name at the Central Okanagan Foundation. The Marie McIntosh Kelowna Community Music School Fund will ensure that future music students at the school will benefit from Marie’s generosity, as all annual disbursements from the fund will go to school scholarships.

Jennifer Hindleo her many friends, Jennifer Hindle was known as ‘Jenny on the go.’ Her many volunteer commitments kept her busy and always on the run from one to another. But even with her many different interests, the arts were her true

passion. Whether it was music, theatre, dance or visual art, Jennifer was an enthusiastic supporter — she believed strongly that the arts enrich people’s lives and the well-being of communities.

Jennifer and her husband John called Kelowna home for more than 50 years, after emigrating from the UK in the early 1960s. Their lives were filled with countless adventures, including running Kelowna’s Eldorado Arms Hotel, helping develop Silver Star Mountain Resort and Lake Louise ski area and spending many a winter in Hawaii. One year, after watching athletes practice for a triathlon in Hawaii and envisioning a similar event in their home town, John and Jennifer launched the Apple Triathlon in Kelowna. Jennifer was involved every year for 29 years and became the event’s longest serving volunteer. She also spent many years volunteering with the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan and the Central Okanagan Foundation Grants Advisory Committee, fostering her affection for the arts community. Long-time friends Gord and Judy Geddes described Jennifer as having “a great sense of humour and boundless energy” and true to her nickname ‘Jenny on the go’ , “her last years were spent traveling, working with her favourite charities and the arts.”

When Jennifer passed away in 2012, the Jennifer Hindle Arts Fund at the Central Okanagan Foundation was established in her honour by family and friends.

Roger Wattsriends and colleagues describe Kelowna lawyer Roger Watts as ‘larger than life’ — a colourful, compassionate, generous man who was a tenacious advocate for his clients.

He was a well-travelled child having lived between Britain, Canada and California before moving to Africa in the early 1950s. He spent his youth in Rhodesia and South Africa before returning to Canada in 1958. Roger’s calling was never in question — he completed a law degree at the University of British Columbia and embarked on a long and successful career in law filled with unbridled passion. Sometimes flamboyant and always entertaining, Roger was generous with his time and his wisdom. In addition to being a guest lecturer on the powers of advocacy, Roger initiated a scholarship for UBC Okanagan graduate students admitted to the UBC Faculty of Law.

Upon his passing in 2011, Roger’s friends and family established the Roger Watts Memorial Fund at the Central Okanagan Foundation.

Dr. Joan Tailyour D.V.M.oan Tailyour was born in Edmonton, Alberta on June 4th, 1914. Her parents were Captain Keith and Christina (Nee Torrance) Tailyour who had come to Alberta in 1911 from Britain. Keith enlisted in the R.A.F. in 1914, returning to

Edmonton in 1919 where he initiated a local airline between Edmonton and Calgary in 1920. Tragically Keith was killed in a crash in Ontario in 1923. Christina then brought Joan to live in Kelowna where she had many friends and two sisters living in the Okanagan.

Joan was raised in Kelowna and, following a long family tradition of military service, in 1942 Joan enlisted as an Officer in the women’s division of the RCAF. After several wartime postings Joan was discharged and attended the Ontario Veterinary College, graduating with a D.V.M. in 1950. She then spent many years with the Health of Animals Branch in Ottawa. While there she rode with the North York Hunt. Joan has been an avid traveler visiting Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and Russia as well as maintaining contact with relations in the United Kingdom. She has been an active and competitive horsewoman, both as a rider and instructor and is well known across Canada for her knowledge about horses and her riding skills, a mentor to many. Her love for animals, especially horses, has been a major part of her life.

Joan retired to Kelowna with cherished memories of a busy, challenging life and fond memories of worldwide friends and admirers as well as an abiding interest in the welfare of all animals, particularly horses. The Dr. Joan Tailyour D.V.M. Fund was established at the Central Okanagan Foundation to foster the field of animal welfare, specifically horses.

Lionel Wacever 35 years ago, Lionel Wace had an idea. It started with a dream, grew into a mission, and became a significant part of his life’s work!

To say Lionel’s story is inspirational is an understatement. It is also a wonderful reminder of how much can be accomplished when you plant the seeds of a vision and dedicate efforts to nurture growth in community giving. Among the broad range of notable accomplishments that bear Lionel’s mark is the formation of the Central Okanagan Foundation.

An Okanagan based supervisor for the Ministry of Social Services in the early 1970’s, Lionel recognized the inherent risk of relying solely on government money to solve community issues. He believed too much dependence on the government was not only regressive for the community, but negative for its residents. Lionel envisioned a separate organization that could offer a flexible, responsive and personalized structure for giving, where donors could make a difference in the community they called home. As usual, forward-thinking Lionel was absolutely right.

Lionel’s mission became setting-up a community foundation in the Central Okanagan for the purpose of raising funds to address community needs. With the fellowship and help of Frank Williams, Ish Holmes and a cast of characters that have come to be known as the COF “Founders”, Lionel’s dream became a reality and Central Okanagan Foundation was born.

Lionel’s passion and dedication to the community foundation movement remained strong throughout his life. As he so humbly stated, “Anyone can leave a legacy”. Lionel passed away on March 2, 2012 at the age of 92.
