執行長的話 FroM ThE DESk oF ThE ExECuTivE DirECTor 聖誕佳節即將來臨，這時候也是回饋社會的最好機會！許多動物需要大家的幫助, 特別是天

氣冷的時候牠們需要溫暖的棉被，營養的食物與大家的關懷。慶祝聖誕節時不妨也準備一份

禮物給需要的收容所、愛心媽媽、或家附近的流浪動物。SPCA完全依靠大家的愛心捐款才

能夠幫助更多動物，因此希望各位也可以選擇支持協會，捐款不嫌多不嫌少 （可抵稅）。

我們協會商品12月份將全面打8折，讓大家可以一邊購物也可以一邊做公益。

感謝大家今年對協會的愛護與支持，明年我們會努力幫助更多受虐動物，佳節快樂！

‘Tis the season of giving…the holiday season is just around the corner and there is nothing more

gratifying than giving to those in need. During the cold winter months up ahead, many animals will

need your help providing necessities such as warm blankets, nutritious food, and supplements. For

Christmas, please consider donating items to an animal shelter, helping out a stray in your neighbor-

hood, or supporting the SPCA by giving a monetary donation (tax deductible). All our merchandise

will be on sale throughout the month of December so you can also shop for a good cause. Thank

you for supporting our work protecting animals in Taiwan and we hope to help even more animals

恭喜第一屆世界狂犬病日繪畫比賽得獎者！

台灣防止虐待動物協會與優學網以及寵樂網共同舉辦的世界動物日狂犬病繪畫比賽得獎名

單出爐！特別感謝所有的同學，學校，老師，以及家長的熱烈回應！這次我們寄送了狂犬

病教材給8000多位五六年級學生，133位學生並參與了繪畫比賽。

所有的作品都非常的獨特，經過評選 (評分標準：60%內容，40%構圖) 選出得獎者！

感謝長頸鹿美語學校和台灣三菱鉛筆總經理宋迪威先生提供獎品給得獎者！

CoNgraTuLaTioNS To ThE WiNNErS!

Our first annual World Rabies Day drawing contest came to an end on November 15th. We want to thank all participating students, schools, teachers, and parents as well as PetFun and Uschool for holding this meaningful event with us. We delivered over 8000 copies of our Rabies Preven-tion leaflets to schools around Taiwan and 133 students signed up to participate in the drawing competition. All of the drawings were very unique and after a long deliberation and a voting process (60% Content, 40% Technique), the winners were chosen!

台中半日遊！台中動物保護處

11月份時SPCA跑到了台中動物保護處與處長和處內專員們開會討論如何改善台中的動物

虐待案件處理方式。約處長見面一開始很困難，但很高興見面後我們雙方達到了共識，也

就是我們必須一起合作處理案件才能夠有效的幫助到動物。協會向動保處指出，SPCA每月

收到的案件有許多都在台中地區，希望處內人員可以更積極的調查每一個報案, 協會也會

盡可能的協助。處長很熱情的答應會與協會更加保持聯繫，也承諾將會設計以目錄的表格

來評分虐待的等級, 如動物眼睛有沒有髒 / 環境有沒有水/水有沒有髒/地上有沒有排泄物等

等並用打勾或分數的方式來看有幾個勾/幾分以上就是虐待,再來是不當飼養,再來是沒有違

法等等的評分表. 這樣就不會有每個動保員到案發現場有不同的標準的問題。處長也說會

在明年的台中地方自治條例明確規定“那些行為是虐待行為”

TaiChuNg aNiMaL ProTECTioN oFFiCEIn November, the SPCA staff paid a visit to the Taichung Animal Protection Office and sat down with the Director and his staff to discuss how the SPCA can work together with his team to improve animal welfare in Taichung. After many difficulties in setting up the meeting, we were finally able to meet the Director face to face. The SPCA receives many reports about animal neglect and abuse in TaiChung and therefore it is vital we build a close working relationship with the APO. After the two and a half hour meeting, we are happy to announce that the Animal Protection Office director has agreed to work with us for the cases that we report to them. He has also agreed to create standardized checklists for his inspectors to use during investigations to bet-ter determine if an animal is being neglected. The office welcomed our suggestions and we hope this will allow us to successfully help more animals in need.

年底協會會議

In November, SPCA held our annual year-end board and supervisors meeting. We discussed our accomplishments and the obstacles we faced this year, as well as planned for our focuses and events for year 2014. Big thank you to all our board members and supervisors for volunteering their time to help make Taiwan SPCA a better and stronger organization. 讓動物們也能參與你的婚禮吧！

結婚，是人生的大事，也是一件令人花腦筋的事情!

但最最困擾我的，卻是婚禮小物的選擇，因為我希望能夠讓來祝福我們的賓客，能夠收到

一份既能代表我們，又具有意義的小物。 這可真是件很花腦筋、時間的事! 於是我想了

想自己的特色與喜好，從中挑選一個一看到就能讓賓客想到：「啊!對!這就是我所認識的

MOMO啊!」的小物。

我頭腦簡單、四肢也不太發達，但我非常愛我的家人、崇拜莫扎特、喜愛動物，這些拼湊

起來，差不多就有了八、九分MOMO的形象。 但是我不能把我最愛的爸媽當成禮物送出

去，而莫札特本人也無法來我的婚禮現場演奏音樂給我的賓客欣賞，所以我想就分享動物

在我身命中帶給我的美好吧!

在讀天主教大學時期的義工服務，我接觸了流浪動物之家。從那時起，狗、貓、兔子和天

竺鼠帶給過我多年的喜樂和心痛。當這份愛慢慢的從心中萌芽後，我突然了解人生工作

目標在哪了。因此我和我的先生提議替每位賓客捐50塊的善款給台灣防止虐待動物協會

(Taiwan SPCA) 作為小物，並且希望這顆善念的種子，能夠在重要的那晚，將祝福傳送出

去。

一路來，受到很多人的幫忙，感謝Taiwan SPCA的員工如此耐心又興奮的幫我們準備信函

以及幫我們設計了可愛的卡片、雅虎網拍的牛寶寶*2幫我們製作婚禮紀念磁鐵，一切的一

切就在眾人協力下，我們順利完成了只屬於我最特別、並且具有意義的婚禮小物。

最後，在婚禮的那晚，我們把賓客對我們新人的祝福與愛一同和台灣的動物們分享了。

我們做到了我們的初衷，那晚我把在我心中已經開花結果的種子撒出去，讓我有機會分享

愛與幸福給台灣的動物，我相信，雖然來賓們拿在手上的是份“小禮物”，但相信它能傳

遞我的用心與想法，相信來賓拿在手裡可以感覺到心裡暖暖的、幸福滿滿的。因為這份禮

雖小，但是意義重大。

gETTiNg MarriED? SharE your LovE WiTh ThE aNiMaLS Too!

Just like any couple treading through their wedding plans, one of those 101 miscellaneous but necessary items on our to-do list was “wedding favors”. As a guest, I would like to receive a favor that I would associate with the joyous occasion, and as a bride, I hoped to give a favor that would be memorable (and affordable). There are three things I love the most in my life, family, Mozart and animals. Since I figured there wouldn’t be a way to divvy up my parents into 800 servings for sharing, or resurrect Amadeus at the wedding, off to the animal direction I went with my brain cells.

Animals have always been an important part of my life; they brought me countless years of joys and heartaches. As this love grew, I knew just where I want to go with my career and life. I cau-tiously proposed we could make a 50NT donation on behalf of all our 800 guests to the Taiwan SPCA, and let that be the most loving favor our guests have ever received. I contacted the SPCA through an email, told them what we had in mind, and we shared our visions with equal excite-ment.

This would not have been possible without the support of so many people; the SPCA staff who took the time to make official letters for display at the dinner and designed the cutest little cards for our guests, and 牛寶寶 on yahoo auction. This was the end result; we made a donation in honor of all of our guests to the Taiwan SPCA, letting each of our guests know that a loving blessing was given to Taiwan animals in their names. There were no keychains, no chopsticks, not even mini teddy bears, but each of our guests applauded the “favor”.

We accomplished what we set out to do, a favor that would be memorable, cherished and mean-ingful, for a long time to com, for many animals to come.

關於類固醇 aLL abouT STEroiDS 類固醇 - 由於可以快速減緩發炎或疼痛症狀，讓病人有迅速把病治好的假象，因此俗稱”美國仙丹”。但在醫療上這可能會造成一個很大的問題。因為”症狀”的消失，並不代表”疾病”的消失。這時體內或許仍有其他病原或問題需要治療，但卻被誤以為已經痊癒而疏忽，若延誤的治療加上類固醇的副作用，最嚴重甚至將會導致動物死亡！

Steroids, also at times known as American Panacea, are widely used because they can quickly ease inflammation and pain, and make patients believe their health issues have healed. However, the lack of symptoms does not necessarily mean the illness has been cured. The patients are being misled, believing that they have been fully cured and thus continue to neglect the underlying illness. Long delays in treatment coupled with the side-effects of over steroid use could even possibly cause death.

類固醇是什麼? WhaT arE STEroiDS?

類固醇是一種腎上腺皮質荷爾蒙的藥物。在面對壓力的情況下，身體便會自然分泌。這裡所指的壓力除了心理上的緊張以外，也包括生理上的不舒服。類固醇可以幫助代謝體內的蛋白質、醣類、脂肪來提供身體更多能量，並藉由抑制免疫力來降低身體的發炎反應。

Steroids are naturally occurring hormones that everyone’s body produces. When a person (or animal) is under pressure or stress, his/her body will generate such hormones. Stress not only affects the men-tal state but can also affect the physical body and can present itself in many different forms of illness. Steroids help to metabolize protein, carbohydrate and fat and provide more energy to the body, also reducing inflammatory reactions.

類固醇可以用於… STEroiDS CaN bE uSED To…

•補充體內腎上腺皮質素的缺乏。Ex: 艾迪生病 (附註1)Supplement the lack of adrenal steroids the body should naturally produceEx: Addison’s Disease. •消炎。可廣泛、迅速的減輕身體的炎症反應。Reduce inflammation. Steroids are known for quickly reducing all kinds of inflammation. •免疫抑制。可用於治療免疫性疾病。Restrain overactive immunity. They can be used to cure immunity diseases. •某些腫瘤的輔助治療藥物。Be adjuvant drugs for some kinds of tumors.

類固醇的副作用 ThE SiDE EFFECTS oF STEroiDS

類固醇類似身體的內分泌物質，當過度、長期使用後，反而會導致動物的全身性問題。

EDuCaTioN 教育新聞 以下僅列出“部分”的副作用：

Steroids are similar to endocrine. When taken excessively over a long period of time, could lead to numerous problems throughout the body as a whole. Below is a list of just some of the side effects of overuse. •腎上腺皮質萎縮 --- 毛髮變差、脫毛Weakening or wasting away of the adrenal cortex. Signs: skin and hair problems. •糖尿病 --- 吃多、喝多、尿多Diabetes. Signs: eating, drinking and urinating more than usual. •腸胃道潰瘍 --- 嘔吐、下痢Gastrointestinal ulcers. Signs: vomiting and diarrhea. •肝、腎衰竭Exhaustion of the liver and kidneys. •胰臟炎Pancreatitis•免疫系統受到嚴重抑制Highly suppressed immune system. •高血壓High blood pressure•傷口癒合變慢Slow healing wounds•肌肉無力Weakening of the muscles

這些副作用並不見得如表面上看來那麼輕微，因為身體的所有功能都是環環相扣。舉例來說，若動物癒合傷口的能力下降，則會使傷口接觸外界的時間更長，而增加接觸病源的機率，同時又因為免疫力下降，則可能使小小的傷口變成嚴重的感染。光是無法控制的嚴重感染，最後就有可能導致動物休克死亡。而很不巧的，動物若生了其他重病需要緊急手術時，也會因為癒合能力下降、免疫力下降而大幅增加手術的風險。更不用說像糖尿病、高血壓…等其他全身性疾病會造成更複雜的影響了。

These side effects can be very serious because all functions of the body link to each other closely. For example, when wounds are slow healing, it means they are more susceptible to other infections. Because of the already suppressed immune system, small wounds could cause severe infections. Animals could go into shock and die simply because of uncontrollable and severe infections. Unfortunately, if animals develop other serious diseases and need surgery, the risks during the operation will be much higher because of slow healing due to suppressed immunity. Not to mention long term diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, which could cause even more complex problems.

飼主可以做什麼呢? So what Can pet ownerS do?

飼主在家可以多觀察動物的狀況，隨著疾病和類固醇的使用方式不同，需要注意的副作用也

EDuCaTioN 教育新聞 可能會不太一樣。在診療時和獸醫師確認，並在回診時讓獸醫師清楚知道動物在家的狀況。才能讓獸醫師做出正確的治療計畫。

Observe your pet closely at home. Because of the many variations of illnesses that require steroid use, it should be noted that the side effects can also vary. Be very clear with your vet about the ani-mal’s behaviour, illness and drug history. This will help your vet make the correct diagnosis in turn providing the proper treatment.

在這邊要特別強調一點：絕對不可以因為看到”副作用出現”或是”臨床症狀消失”就擅自停藥。類固醇的使用，由於會牽扯到內分泌系統，因此必須慢慢減輕劑量到完全停藥為止，時間可能需要數周到數個月不等，而關於何時該降低劑量以及降低的步驟，這都需要獸醫師的臨床經驗和詳細判斷。

It must be emphasized that, if symptoms or side effects do appear, we mustn’t make the decision on our own to stop the treatment. Steroids influences the endocrine system, therefore the dose needs to be decreased gradually before it can be completely stopped. This could take weeks or even months. Deciding when and how to decrease steroid usage must be determined by your vet.

結語 SummarY

藥物的使用就像雙面刃一樣，動物可能需要承擔副作用的傷害，但也不能否認在某些疾病中，類固醇的確是良好、正確的治療藥物。雖然本篇對副作用的部分著墨較多，但只要獸醫師與飼主之間有良好的醫病合作關係，獸醫有計畫性地使用加上飼主的全力配合之下，我們也可以讓類固醇成為真正的仙丹。P.S. 若您對類固醇的使用仍有疑慮，也可與臨床獸醫師諮詢及討論。

The effects of taking any drugs, or any drug for that matter, is two- sided. There are side effects, which could effect the animal in the long term, yet for some diseases, steroids is the best and only treatment method. Even though the side effects can seem overwhelming, working closely with your vet on a proper treatment plan is the best plan of action.

附註1: remarkS: 艾迪生病-也就是腎上腺異常造成的腎上腺素低下。造成原因包含了腫瘤、藥物、感染或是先天的免疫系統異常。通常會發現狗狗的精神食慾下降、肌肉無力、虛弱以及多渴、多尿…等現象。治療方式則視嚴重程度而定，通常需要補充輸液以及體內不足的腎上腺素。一般在經過適當的治療下，狗狗也仍能保有良好的生活品質

Addison’s disease: This is a disorder that affects the adrenal gland, which leads to a lack of adrena-lin. Common causes are tumors, overuse of drugs, infection, or congenital disorders of the immune system. Symptoms of Addison’s Disease are: decrease of energy and appetite, weakening of muscles, general weakness, excessive thirst and urination just to name a few. Treatment will depend on the progression of the disease but usually fluid infusions and adrenalin supplements are necessary. With suitable treatment, dogs can still live a happy healthy life.

EDuCaTioN 教育新聞 心絲蟲感染：預防就是最好的治療hEarTWorM: Why PrEvENTioN iS ThE bEST TrEaTMENT

心絲蟲是一種寄生在狗狗心臟和肺動脈的寄生蟲。心絲蟲的幼蟲寄生在全身的血液裡，當狗狗被蚊子叮咬吸血時，幼蟲則順勢跑到蚊子體內，並藉由下一次的叮咬將疾病散撥出去。當心絲蟲纏繞在心臟內時，便會干擾血液循環，使心臟發生肥大、衰竭，並且影響肺臟、肝臟、腎臟…等等的功能，甚至造成器官衰竭，嚴重可導致死亡。總而言之，心絲蟲感染是一種很可怕的疾病。若沒有盡早治療，就算日後把蟲體清除乾淨，器官

衰竭的傷害，也可能會無法復原了。

Heartworm is a parasite, which lives in dog’s heart and pulmonary artery. Heartworm larva (micro-filaria) exist in the blood stream and travels throughout the entire body. When mosquitos bite dogs, the larva will transfer to the mosquito and then transfer to the next dog bitten. Heartworm will interfere the cardiovascular system when living in the heart, causing hypertrophy (enlargement of the heart), heart failure, and can further affect the liver, kidneys and other organ functions, leading to multi-organ failure and death. Overall, heartworm is a terrifying disease. Even if treated and all the worms are killed, once the damage to the heart has been done, there is no way for the organs to return their normal function.

在臨床上，我們會將病程分成以下三個階段：第一級：沒有任何的臨床症狀，只能靠獸醫的健康檢查來發現。第二級：狗狗會比較容易喘，精神、食慾可能會比較差，運動量下降。第三級：狗狗會出現嚴重、明顯的不對勁。可能會看到腹水造成的大肚子，呼吸困難、一直咳嗽，嚴重甚至可能咳血、或者併發全身性問題而死亡。

Clinically, there are three stages of this disease:1. No clinical signs, can only be diagnosed by health examination.2. Exercise intolerance, decreased appetite and lethargy may be noted. 3. More severe clinical signs. An enlarged stomach due to ascites (fluid accumulation in the ab-dominal cavity), dyspnea (shortness of breath), coughing (possibly with blood), or systemic illness and death.

當然，除了心絲蟲外，也有很多疾病會讓狗狗出現上述的症狀。因此，只要一發現不對勁，不要覺得多喘兩下沒什麼大不了，應要及早帶去動物醫院檢查。

Of course these symptoms are not only limited to heartworm infection. At first notice of any of these signs, a visit to the vet should be made immediately.

心絲蟲的治療可分為殺成蟲及殺幼蟲的治療，當確定狗狗體內有成蟲時，兩者都需要進行。 There are two steps of treatment that can be taken. 1. Kill the adult worm and 2. Kill the larvae. When there are already adult worms present, both treatments should be pursued.

而心絲蟲成蟲的治療目前也大致分成三種治療方式。以抗生素殺死與寄生蟲共生的細菌：治療過程較溫和，但並不能保證能將蟲全部殺光，治療時間也較長。肌肉注射殺蟲藥：可以立即將蟲殺死，但死掉的蟲可能會引起嚴重的過敏反應或栓塞，有可能造成狗狗暴斃。因此，治療時通常需配合預防血栓，和預防過敏的藥物使用。外科手術：以外科手術將蟲夾除，但由於狗狗的循環、肝腎可能都不太好，也會提升手術的風險。目前有在做這個手術的獸醫師也不多。

The main treatment for adult heartworms includes: Antibiotic treatment. This will kill bacteria that live off the parasite. This is a much safer way of treatment, yet it is more time consuming and may not kill all the adult worms. Pesticidal injections. This method will kill the adult worms immedi-ately, yet it is a more risky method since the dead worms could cause a severe anaphylactic reaction and embolism, which could cause sudden death. Thus, it is crucial to combine anti-coagulation and anti-allergen medication with the pesticidal treatment. Surgical removal. However, since the worms could affect multiple organs, the risk of anesthesia is higher than usual procedures. Also this is not a routine surgery, not many surgeons currently perform this technique.

以上不管是治療風險、手術費用以及治療效果都各有利弊，同時也要搭配殺死幼蟲的藥來使用。此外，也還需要飼主悉心照料及配合，並不只是帶去給獸醫拿藥、打針就沒事了。

All of these treatments have pros and cons, but once a dog has contracted heartworm, there is no choice but to go ahead and treat it. This is not a disease that can be cured by one magic shot or dose of medication, it takes time and much patience and care on the part of the owner.

雖然心絲蟲感染對狗狗的傷害如此嚴重，且治療不但風險高、昂貴、且麻煩；然而，只要每個月定時服用心絲蟲預防藥，其實就能完全避免感染的可能了。目前市面上有多種商品化的心絲蟲預防藥，可以依照飼主和狗狗的喜好或者金錢的考量來選用。相較於昂貴的治療費，心絲蟲的預防每個月只要花費大約100~200元台幣，除了能確保狗狗不會得到心絲蟲，更能夠節省您的荷包。

All of these serious complications, expensive and high risk treatments can be prevented easily by us-ing heartworm preventatives. There are several different kinds of commercial heartworm prevention medications that can be easily purchased from your vet. By spending a mere 100-200 NT dollars per month on preventative measures, you’ll be saving your dog from getting this awful disease and also save a load of money in the end.

但由於預防藥就是殺死“幼蟲”的藥物，所以在第一次使用前，一定要請獸醫師確認狗狗體內沒有“成蟲”。同時，若狗狗有牧羊犬血統，也務必要確認預防藥中沒有Ivermectin的成份，不然會產生中毒反應。

The way heartworm preventatives work is by killing the larva in the blood, preventing them from becoming adults and living in the heart. However, before preventative measures are taken, please check with your veterinarian to ensure there are no adult worms in your dog’s heart already. It must be noted, that collie breeds are very sensitive to Ivermectin, which is the main ingredient in heart-worm preventatives, thus consultation with your veterinarian before starting is crucial.

EDuCaTioN 教育新聞 動物調查案件更新 2013年3月，Taiwan SPCA接獲一起在新北市狗狗長期關籠的案件。經現場拜訪後，得知狗狗叫熊熊，是一隻大約18歲的米克斯老狗。TSPCA調查專員多次拜訪後，飼主表示是熊熊因為隨著年紀越大而越常出現攻擊性行為，會攻擊自己的家人，最後甚至不願出籠，所以飼主才會認為他們並無其他方法而只能維持提供牠的基本需求而已(如，餵食、打掃環境)，更誤認為熊熊的個性是無法被放出運動的。

In March of 2013, a case of a dog being caged up long term was reported to the Taiwan SPCA. After our initial visit to the site, we learnt that the 18 year old mixed breed dog’s name was Xiong-Xiong. Investigators from the TSPCA visited the site numerous times to try to determine why he was be-ing kept in a cage. Xiong-Xiong’s owner informed us that the older Xiong-xiong got, the more often he attacked people, even family members. Xiong-Xiong also was not willing to leave his cage, therefore his owner thought that there was no other solution than keeping him caged and providing him with the basic needs (food,water, clean environment), and wrongly thought that Xiong-Xiong shouldn’t be let out.

遺憾的是，現今台灣的動物保護法在“長期關籠”部分是無任何相關條文的，因此我們無法用任何法律條文來要求飼主改善及遵從。(Taiwan SPCA今年與蕭美琴委員所推動的動保法修法草案中有提出“不可長期關籠/綁繩”的相關規定並已一讀通過，目前正在等待二讀會議)。

Unfortunately, the current Taiwan Animal Protection Act doesn’t have any provisions that state pets can’t be caged long term. Due to this, there was no law on our side that could enforce the owner to change. (This year the TSPCA, along with legislator Xiao Mei Qing, have been working on amend-ing the Animal Protection Act. The provision of prohibiting long-time caging and leashing has already passed the first reading, and we are expecting the 2nd reading early in 2014).

TSPCA調查專員經由長期拜訪並提供飼主許多改善建議，最後也將一組大柵欄送給熊熊。現在，飼主已將該活動式柵欄和熊熊原本的鐵籠作連結來增加熊熊的活動空間，目的是減少牠的佔地域性，讓熊熊在更大的活動空間中可以自由走動來得到更好的生活品質，並試圖減少攻擊性行為出現的頻率。TSPCA鼓勵所有飼主應負起責任來改善寵物的飼養環境，而我們也仍會持續地追蹤熊熊的後續生活情況。

TSPCA investigators visited Xiong-Xiong and his owner countless times, and offered many sugges-tions on how the environment could be improved. In the end the TSPCA was able to give Xiong-Xiong a moveable fence that would help in improving his living space. We are happy to report, the new fence combined with the old cage, have made a big difference in Xiong-Xiong’s living area. Xiong-Xiong now feels less territo-rial, has space to move around safely in and has a much larger space. The TSPCA encourages every-one to be responsible pet owners and take responsibility of improving their animal’s living environ-ment. We will continue to check up on Xiong-xiong’s to ensure his health and safety.

EDuCaTioN 教育新聞 予適合的改善建議。以熊熊的案例來說，飼主從不願意配合的態度到願意加大狗狗的生活空間，雖說過程花費了超過半年的時間在溝通，但熊熊的生活品質的確有改善這點才是TSPCA所重視的成果。TSPCA調查專員和獸醫的現場評估認為，熊熊出現的攻擊性行為絕不是單純因為年紀變大的原因所引起，而這當中飼主的確應為狗狗的所有不當行為承擔起所有責任。 不管是老狗、小狗，所有問題都是可以經由專業的行為訓練來改善，當然飼主必須承諾及付出極大的耐心及時間。

TSPCA investigators treat all cases reported to us as individual and carefully assess each person’s ability (financially, spatially etc) to make improvements for their animals. In Xiong-Xiong’s case, his owner at first wasn’t willing to improve the living environment, but after many months of com-munications and not giving up, he was finally able to accept the changes. Due to this, Xiong-Xiong is now much more comfortable and has more freedom to move around as he wishes. No matter the age of any dog, most all problems can be improved by training and making sure that the welfare needs of the animal is being met. On top of that, patience and persistence on the owner’s part are crucial.

Cases like these, with happy endings, make the long 6 months of negotiations worth the while.
