It is apparent that all the ADS slide programs are sadly out of date. To correct this situation at a local level, Tag Bourne has volunteered to establish our own slide pro- gram. The picture source must be CODS members, so photograph your prize blooms, also your garden and bring the photos and negatives to our next two meetings. We feel it could become quite valuable to us and usable on many occasions. Our various displays have seen better days and must be replaced as I have reported in earlier CODS Corner issues. Ruth Pardue kindly collaborated in up-dating these and I submitted them to JoAnn Murchake on March 5, for rough draft. She plans to complete them by the end of March so hopefully we will see the finished pieces at our next meet- ing. Cost of project will be JoAnn's time ($5.00 per hour) and all material. We plan to have them plasticized so we will have a beautiful educational display for many years. Jeanne Yauger has advised me the Conservatory is issuing a new publication. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

I would like to formally welcome Donna Deistch and Steve Glass as new members of CODS. We hope they have as much enjoyment from daffodils as we do.

At the CODS March meeting Grace Baird gave a very informative talk describing the many different varieties and names of "Trumpets". Jenette Smith presented a slide program from ADS regarding "Arrangements" at the February meeting. My sincere thanks to both members for their contribution.

It is apparent that all the ADS slide programs are sadly out of date. To correct this situation at a local level, Tag Bourne has volunteered to establish our own slide pro-gram.

She plans to complete them by the end of March so hopefully we will see the finished pieces at our next meet-ing. Cost of project will be JoAnn's time ($5.00 per hour) and all material. We plan to have them plasticized so we will have a beautiful educational display for many years.

Jeanne Yauger has advised me the Conservatory is issuing a new publication. It will in-clude an announcement of our show dates and information about Whetstone Park.

Laura Emig has kindly volunteered to become our new "Ways and Means" chairman, with the help of Tag Bourne. One of their detail duties will be the direction of the annual bulb sale. I know all our members will offer to make this a very big success.

Show plans will be finalized at the April 8th meeting. Aa part of the meeting program, Naomi Liggett with her committee have prepared a workshop feature where they will teach us how to prepare out daffodils for show.

Be sure and mark your calenders for Tuesday, April 8th., 7:30 p.m., at the Upper' Arlington Municipal Services Building.

On Wednesday 26, we set out via Delta Airlines to Memphis seeking sunshine and daffodils. But to our chagrin the weather was no better than what we had left behind. Thus far, the South has not been blessed with a favorable spring.

Upon arrival at the Hyatt Regency we were warmly greeted by Presi ent Chuck and Amy Anthony. The efficient Committee had our convention materials it( e'd in a lovely green bag decorated with a felt daffodil. This will undoubtedly be seen at many future shows filled with daffodil catalogs and classification books. Among the many items included in the bag were aspirin , Di-gel, and Feen-a-mint. We were new prepared for anything!

Our accommodations were excellent, unless you had a fear of heights. The rooms had floor to ceiling windows overlooking a picturesque lake complete with water fowl. Ohio, with twenty five persons had the largest contingency present. The host state was second and Virginia a close third.

Thursday, while the show was being judged, Grace, Tag, Cecile, the Hanenkrats and myself set out for downtown Memphis. Plans were for a ride on the Memphde Queen. We arrived in time to enjoy a delicious lunch at The Pier Restaurant. The atmosphere was outstanding! However, the trip on the Mississippi can best be summed up by Grace; "It was an experience."

Friday was a day of workshops. The morning commenced with a slide presentation on Daffodil Health Maintenance by Dr. William Bender. This is a subjeLt most of us dOn't wish to dwell on, but the one that followed was a pleasant diversion. Marie Bozievich spoke on the Art of Painting Daffodils and made it sound easy.

After a lunch break Mary Winton, an instructor in the Ichiyo School of Japanese arranging, created sixteen lovely designs using daffodils. Planning a Daffodil Show was the topic of ADS Awards Chairman MrS. Phil Lee.

Following the banquet on Friday evening, the flower show awards were presented by Show Chairman Mrs. Morris Scott. Following this the slate of officers was read by Mrs. Hubert Bourne, the Nominating Committee Chairman, and accepted by the Society. This year the ADS Silver and Gold Medals were given. President Marie Bozievich was the re-cipient of the silver for service to the Society and Dr. Tom Throckmorton the gold for service to the daffodil. Both were well deserved and the winners quite surprised. The evening ended with John Lea of England speaking on "Daffodils Today and Tommorrow".

Saturday included a bus tour to the Memphis Botanic Garden to see the daffodil plantings of the Mid-South Daffodil Society. Before lunch we paused briefly at Grace-land, a must for Elvis fans. Then on south to the farm of Miss Leslie Anderson near Hernando, Mississippi. She has over five hundred cultivars planted both formally and informally. More delicious food was served inside her home which contained many an-tiques, beautiful paintings and many other interesting items too numerous to name. A tour of Memphis ended the trip.

The evening's banquet speaker was Charles Mullinix - "A Southern Humorist Looks At Daffodil Growers". His type of humor and style of presentation was not widely received. Mathew Zandbergen then showed slides of South Africa and Wells slides of his and Mathew's trip to the Narzissenfest in the Austrian Alps. Thus the 1980 ADS Convention drew to an end.

It was good to renew acquaintances with past Columbus visitors; Brian Duncan, Sandy McCabe, Barbara Abel-Smith, Kate Read, Phil Phillips and Mathew. Last year's entertaining speaker Sir Frank Harrison was also in attendance and it was a great pleasure to meet John Lea for the first. time.

Mark March 26,27,28, 1981 on your calender and plan to make the trip to Newport Beach, California with us.

much. Picnic, 2 W-Y, was as smooth as silk, pleasing green eye and light yellow cup. Others receiving much comment were Isis, a 2 Y-Y, Scoreline, 1 Y-Y, Berit, 1 Y-Y, Fad, I Y-Y and Stella Turk, a 6 Y-Y miniature, which is very tiny, but very very good. Bill Roese of California had a Division seedling, Estrella x Merlin # 66/1/1, 3 W-GYR which was very smooth and a most beautiful flower, which we can look to be registered in the future.

Another pleasant surprise, Naomi and I ran into Mary Lou Collins, who was putting up arrangements all around the show and hotel lobby. Many of you will remember Mary Lou when she was so deeply involved in Norwest.

INTRODUCING MARIE BOZIEVICH

I introduce Marie Bozievich, our new ADS president and the first woman pres- ident in the 25 year history of the Society. I wish her unbounded success in her administration.

Marie was born in Utah where she grew up in the shadows of its rugged mount-ains and as a child learned to climb them and to appreciate their stark and silent beauty. Mountain climbing is still her favorite sport. She has been known to take one of her daughters and walk the trails of the Blue Ridge from one end to the other. . Her love of nature has no limits and with her artistic eye she sees beauty everywhere.

The Washington, D. C. area has been her home for more than 50 years. It is here she developed her own garden and took advantage of all the cultural arts as well as horticultural facilities available in that complex city. There is so much more to Washington than the politics and government, it is first a city of beauty. When the call came out for a meeting of people interested in forming a daffodil society Marie was there and became one of the founding members of the American Daffodil Society. Through the years she has continued to work and contribute so much of herself in the growth of the Society. For her countless efforts she was awarded the highly coveted Silver Medal at the recent 1980 ADS Convention.

Marie and John, her husband, have raised three beautiful daughters and now have several grandchildren. Theirs is a close knit family. Each summer they gather at their oceanside cottage to romp and play and listen to the messages from the sea. One by one as each grandchild reaches a certain age Marie takes him to New York City to introduce and expose him to the cultural arts of that great city. What fun they must have together!

This modest, soft spoken and gracious lady has many facets. At one time she taught ballet and it is obvious that she benefited from the discipline of such a school. Her love of painting goes back to her childhood. In more recent years she has taken up working with silver. She has made many beautiful and unique pieces of jewelry; she has also crafted three priceless silver trophies for the ADS.

What I admire most about Marie is her modesty. In her remarks to the Society the evening she took office, she commented "with fifty years of marriage, parenthood, and being a grandparent", she hopes to aive positive guidance to the ADS. And that is MARIE!

She will be visiting our daffodil show in late April. Make it a point to get acquainted with her. She has so much to share with all of us.
