STRUCTURAL DESIGN
DESIGN
Code cable tray and fittings are manufactured to CSA standard C22.2 Nn. 126.1-98(latest version) from designs offering unprecedented attention to detail and ease ofinstallation.
All Code designs are symmetrical, achieving maximum strength from minimummass and feature reinforcing ribs on the side rail for strength. In addition, Codesiderails combined with the low profile rung design, offer the greatest usable insideheight available in the industry.
Code’s unique SPYDERLOK connector requires only four fasteners per tray. No boltsor washers are required. The speed with which SPYDERLOK can be installed reduceslabour costs over competitive coupling devices and ensures swift installation of trayand fittings, while providing continuity of side rail alignment and strength.
In short, Code’s careful designs have been engineered from improvements and inputfrom the industry and on exceeding all existing specifications.
SMOOTH EDGES
All aspects of both tray and rungs feature rounded edges and flat smooth surfaces toprevent damage when in contact with cables.
CONSTRUCTION
The I-Beam configuration used in the design of side rails for Code Aluminum Trayensures maximum transverse and longitudinal strength. In ladder and ventilateddesigns, rung spacing is uniform both between rungs and between sections. SteelTray siderails and rungs are continuously roll formed for added strength and toensure smooth edges to protect cables. Our steel rungs are slotted to accommodatepipe and cable clamps.
All Code cable tray and fittings ensure optimal strength and bonding characteristicsby means of welding. Metal Inert Gas (M.I.G.) welding is a semi-automatic processusing inert-gas shroud over a consumable wire electrode which transfers current tomelt the base material. A filler metal is also added for reinforcement. Code cabletrays offer superior welding strength because our rungs are welded on both the frontas well as the back of the rungs. This is unique to Code tray and adds additionalstrength to every piece of Code tray.
Our siderails and rungs are designed to allow users to attach a UC clamp withoutdrilling or tapping the siderail.

MATERIALS
Code manufactures cable tray, fittings, and accessories from a variety of materialsthat can accommodate different environments. Important consideration should begiven to the corrosive conditions found in the environment in which the product willbe used.
Our cable tray is manufactured in the following types:
 Aluminum
 Mill-Galvanized Steel (Pre-Galvanized)
Hot Dip-Galvanized Steel — after fabrication
 Stainless Steel
 Epoxy Coated
ALUMINUMCode aluminum siderail and rungs are manufactured from a structural grade 6063-T6"copper free" (.01%) aluminum extrusion. Fabricated parts are made from 5052 H32and 3003 H14. Most conditions are satisfied by aluminum tray and its finish is alwayssmooth. In addition, because of aluminum’s non-magnetic properties, it reduceselectrical losses to a minimum. Longer span tray systems are also available inaluminum
Advantages: Corrosion resistance
Excellent resistance to "weathering" & good for outdoorapplications
 Excellent grounding conductor
Ideal for chemical, pulp mill and marine environments
 Excellent strength to weight ratio

STEELCode steel cable trays are manufactured from continuous roll formed structuralquality steel, which increases the mechanical strength allowing for lighter gaugesteel to carry the required load. Steel alone does not have the corrosion resistanceto maintain the structural integrity of the cable tray, therefore, additional protectionof supplementary coatings must be used.
Advantages: Limited deflection
 Electric shielding
 Low thermal expansion
 High strength
 Low cost
Disadvantages: Heavy to install
 Poor corrosion resistance
 Low electrical conductivity
STAINLESS STEEL Code manufactures stainless steel cable tray from AISI Type 304 or AISI Type 316stainless steel. Both are non-magnetic and exhibit increased strength when coldrolled or formed.
Code stainless steel cable trays are welded using stainless steel welding wire toensure we maintain the same corrosion resistant characteristic as the base metal.
Advantages: Superior Corrosion Resistance
 Withstands High Temperatures
 Good yield strength

FINISHES
PRE-GALVANIZED (HOT DIP MILL GALVANIZED)
Pre-galvanized steel is produced in a rolling mill where the steel is continuouslyrolled through molten zinc. These coils are then slit to size and fabricated by rollforming, shearing, punching, and forming to produce Code Tray.
The steel is a structural quality with a G90 coating thickness, which is .90 ounces ofzinc per square foot of steel, which results in .45 ounces per square foot on each sideof the sheet. This meets the minimum yield and textile strength. During fabrication, where slitting, forming, cutting, or welding is performed, the cut edges and heat-affected zone of welding are subject to superficial oxidation. These areas are thenprotected through electrolytic action of the adjacent zinc surfaces. The coating issmooth, ductile, and adherent. Code suggests that using a hot-dip galvanized finishfor indoor dry location. It is not recommended for outdoor use or in a corrosiveenvironment.
HOT DIP GALVANIZED AFTER FABRICATION
Code Hot Dip Galvanized cable tray products are fabricated from steel, assembledand then the entire tray is immersed in a bath of molten zinc. This zinc coating thencoats all surfaces, including edges and welds.
One advantage to this method is a thicker coating of zinc than a pre-galvanizedmaterial. Coating thickness is controlled by the amount of time a product isimmersed in the molten zinc and the speed of removal. Cable tray that has been hot-dip after fabrication has a minimum of 1.50 ounces per square foot on each side ofthe sheet, or a total of 3.0 ounces per square foot of steel.
This process is recommended for applications of prolonged outdoor exposure and inharsh industrial environments
EPOXY COATING
In certain circumstances an epoxy coated cable tray may be required, for eitherfurther corrosion resistance or aesthetic reasons. The cable tray would be coatedafter fabrication with a heat fused polyester electrostatically applied on aphosphatized base. Our standard colour is ASA 61 grey but consult the factory forother colour options available.

GROUNDING
The Canadian Electrical Code (C.E.C.) specifies under Rule 12-2210 when a cable traycan be considered bonded to ground.
Rule 12-2210 Provision for Bonding
(1) Where metal supports for metal cable trays are bolted to the tray and are in goodelectrical contact with the grounded structural metal frame of a building, the trayshall be deemed to be bonded to ground.
(2) Where the condition of Subrule (1) do not apply, the metal cable tray shall beadequately bonded at intervals not exceeding 15 m and the size of bondingconductors shall be based on the maximum rating or setting of an overcurrentdevice in the circuits by the cable tray in accordance with the requirements ofRule 10-814.
(C.E.C. Part 1. 1994)
_________________________________________________________________________________________For further information consult the Canadian Electrical Code.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Code cable tray systems are designed to be installed as a complete system consisting ofstraight lengths of tray and all necessary fittings (ie: elbows, tees, crosses) to permitchanges in direction.
The straight lengths and fittings should be connected together with SPYDERLOKconnectors to ensure good mechanical connection and bonding in accordance with CSArequirements.
SPYDERLOK connectors joining cable trays to each other or to their fittings shall belocated within one quarter of the span (support spacing) from the supports.
Supports or cantilever brackets for cable tray shall be so installed that the span betweensupports shall not exceed those specified for the class of cable tray to be installed. Dataon the maximum allowable simple beam loading in kilograms per linear meter and themaximum recommended distance between additional supports for each loading is givenunder Standard Load Classes on page 14 of this catalogue.
When elbows, tees, and crosses of 600 mm radius and larger are installed, additionalsupports should be provided for these fittings. It is recommended that this should be atmid-arc.
In the event that Code cable tray be required to penetrate vertically through a dry floor, covers must be installed for 2 meters above the floor level to ensure that the cables aretotally enclosed.
Conductors in vertical runs of cable tray must be supported by UC or PC clamps or nyloncable ties independent of terminal connections. Support distances for specifiedconductor sizes are given in the Canadian Electrical Code.
Conductors must not be installed in Code cable tray systems until the installation hasbeen completed and the cables are reasonably safe from damage from the connectionoperation.
Note: Outdoor installations involving wind, ice or snow loads or any unusual applicationshould first be approved by your engineering department.
WARNING! Do not use as a walkway, ladder or support for personnel.
Use only as a mechanical support for cables, tubing and raceways.

HOT-DIP GALVANIZED VS. ALUMINUM TRAY
One of the most important choices when designing a cable tray system for corrosiveor outdoor environments is the material. Steel cable tray with a Hot-Dip Galvanizedafter Fabrication (ASTM A123) finish has been used successfully for many years.Increasingly, however, aluminum is becoming the material of choice for cable traysystems. In these days of shrinking construction budgets, why would engineers, contractors, and end users choose aluminum cable tray, which typically has aslightly higher initial cost, over Hot-Dip galvanized steel cable tray? The answer liesin aluminum’s many advantages in design, installation, delivery, performance andtotal cost over the lifetime of the installation.
DESIGN AND INSTALLATION
Most people know of aluminum’s superior strength–to–weight ratio. For example, a36" wide, 24-foot section of ladder cable tray with a 6" side rail in hot dip galvanizedsteel cable tray weighs about 200 lbs., whereas the same cable tray in aluminumweighs only about 100 lbs. When installers must carry and put cable tray sectionsinto place, which may be 30’ or more above ground, aluminum’s lighter weight canmean the difference between needing just two installers instead of four.
Field cuts are also much easier with aluminum cable trays, not only becausealuminum is easier to cut, punch, and drill, but there is no need to apply a protectivecoating to the exposed edges. The hot-dip galvanized coating on steel must berepaired with a zinc rich paint (also called cold galvanizing) which is inferior to theoriginal galvanizing, leaving a chink in the steel’s armor against corrosion. Of coursethere is always the chance that some contractors may not repair the cuts at all, further impairing the cable tray’s corrosion resistance.
Because aluminum cable tray components are extruded, material can be used moreefficiently and tolerances remain tighter. Some manufacturers have used this to thecontractor’s advantage by creating splice joints and other features, which offer betterperformance and require less labour to install. And when using cable tray as anequipment grounding conductor (EGC), aluminum’s superior current carryingcapacity reduces the need to purchase and install a separate EGC (in qualifyingindustrial installations) and also increases the safety of the installation by providinga better fault current path.
DELIVERY AND AVAILABILITY
Aluminum cable tray systems can normally be shipped from the factory in a shortperiod of time. Small orders can ship in just a few days. Hot-dip galvanized cabletray systems take several days to fabricate, hot-dip galvanize, and prepare for finalshipment.
All cable tray manufactures must ship their cable tray to a third party to have themgalvanized. This requires that the cable tray be manufactured, packed and shipped tothe galvanizer. The material is then returned to the plant after galvanizing to inspectand debur the product prior to packing and final shipment. The cost of a delay ingetting material to the job site is many times the cost of the material itself and usingaluminum cable tray helps to minimize the chance of delays.

TECH
NIC

Hot dip galvanized steel cable tray covers pose another problem. Placing thin gaugesteel covers in a hot zinc bath will often cause the covers to warp. To avoid thisproblem, thicker material is used and the covers are limited to five feet long. Theextra material and the extra labour required to install shorter covers have asignificant impact on the cost of the entire cable tray system.
PERFORMANCE
Aluminum cable tray has excellent corrosion resistance in many chemicalenvironments and has been used for over thirty years in petro-chemical plants andpaper mills. The aluminum alloy used by cable tray manufactures is 6063-T6, whichis considered copper-free and sometimes referred to as marine grade aluminum.Although copper-free aluminum may experience some chloride pitting in a marineenvironment, this corrosion is limited and does not affect the structural integrity ofthe system.
Galvanizing on steel cable trays is designed to slowly wear away as it protects thesteel; any place where the coating is thin or has been removed can prematurely limitthe product’s service life. Since aluminum cable trays are homogenous materialthroughout, their service life is unaffected by scratches and field modifications. When aluminum cable trays are used with stainless steel hardware, the system canperform indefinitely, with little or no degradation over time, making it ideal for manychemical and marine environments.
TOTAL COST
Aluminum’s many advantageous features like its corrosion resistance, superiorstrength-to weight ratio, ease of field modifications, fast delivery and availability, and labour saving installation all add up to a system well worth the extra initialprice.
Code Manufacturing Ltd has recently narrowed the relative cost of aluminum tosteel, making the choice between aluminum and steel no contest.
